Quit an Application at a specific time each day.
I know how to do something as simple as Quiting an application with AS, but what if I want to run it at say 7pm everyday. Not using iCal.
Any Ideas?
You can use the unix-side launchd application to trigger execution of an application at a specific time. In your case you'd want it to launch an AppleScript that tells your other app to quit.
Programming launchd to do this is easy with an app like Lingon (http://lingon.sourceforge.net/), which provides a gui to set schedules in launchd.
I use to run two applescripts every 30 seconds and a third one once an hour. Works a treat... and it's free.

Is there any kind of a time mechanism that will allow a process to be started at a specific time each day?
There is not a scheduling mechanism native to LC/ADEP. A valid approach would be to use a cron job or WMI (Windows Management Instrumentation) to start a batch file that calls a Java class that uses the LC Java API to invoke the short-lived process.

Are you running any #3rd party applications as well?
If a proprietary (Apple) application "locks up"... it should not bring down the whole system; rather, one should be able to force quit the application that only appears to be hanging the entire system (press option, command & esc keys for the "Force Quit" application menu).
After a force quit of a proprietary application, it then should open right back up without a reboot. The system should not hang. For example, if Safari does "hang" w/a spinning beachball & you force quit that & then fire it up again -- as opposed to a machine that completely "locks up" as you say... that term is usually reserved for when absolutely everything is frozen which calls for the radical power-button force shutdown. -
I am trying to find an app that will automatically forward all voice calls at preset times each day
IE - at 083am weekdays
and automatically cancel the call forward at 6pm weekdays
At the moment i am doing it manually with alarms set to remind me
Seems a pretty basic "want" but - i cant find anything
And APPLE - make it easier to find APPS in the APP store - wy not have a search feature that you can type in what you are looking for??

Another suggestion is to look at Google Voice. I don't know if it offers these specific features or not, but it is highly customizable. -
Safari crashes multiple times each day
I'm having issues with Safari 4.0.2 crashing multiple times each day. I'm on a Mac Pro running 10.5.7.
I planned to post this in the "Safari" discussion group, but was getting a system error when trying to load that group.
I've already tried repairing disk permissions, clearing cache, etc.
Anyone have any ideas?

Scheduling specific time of day for automatic software updates
How can one schedule a specific time of day (i.e. between 11:01 pm to 5.59 am when I have unlimited download availability) for an iMac to search for automatic software updates? System preferences only offer frequency, but no time option. If it is possible to schedule a specific time, will invoking the feature override the sleep function, wake up the machine and perform the software update and then let the machine go back to "sleep?" Thank you for all your help.
to clarify barney's suggestion, the following terminal command will download all available updates and put them in your Downloads folder.
softwareupdate -d --all
so what you need to do is this.
1. turn off automatic software update in software update system preferences.
2. make a cron or a launch daemon to run the above terminal command periodically at the time of your choosing. to make a launch daemon I recommend using lingon http://tuppis.com/lingon/
The daemon will only run if the computer is not asleep at the scheduled time so you might want to set to to wake/start shortly before that. this is done in system preferences->energy saver->schedule.
to install the updates once they are downloaded double-click on the pkg files and follow the instructions. -
Render at a Specific Time Every Day
Is there a way to have a specific Final Cut Pro project to render automatically at a specific time every day?
I work at a CG house, and shots are updated at random intervals, but are always in a fixed, specific location. So by rendering out the project everyday we would always have an up to date complete edit. And by automating it it could be rendered off hours and be ready first thing in the morning for review.Or page 548 of Volume III, if you're on Final Cut Pro 5 (FCStudio 1).

FCS2 may allow specific time of day, but FCS1 simply lets you set a period of time (while the program is open, but idle). So set it for 2 hours, leave FCP open when your last editor leaves the office.
This also offers several choices on which sequences you actually want to 'auto-render'.

Is there a specific time of day that the BTO iMacs become available for pickup?
As I am sure many people can relate to, I find myself hitting the refresh screen on my Apple order page awaiting the arrive of a built-to-order 27" iMac (3.4 GHz/ 32GB memory/ 3TB fusion/ 680MX graphics). Question for people with an inside scoop.... do the custom macs arrive a specific time of day (many retailers have scheduled deliveries at specic times during the day). The reason I ask is because if my Mac is only going to become "available for pick-up" in the morning, I will know that after... let's say 10am.. there is no reason for me to keep checking because I will know it won't be showing up on this specific business day, if it hasn't already. Any insight on how this works? Thanks fellow Apple fans!

Printing a control panel at a specific time of day automatically
I would like to be able to print out a control panel at a set time each day. I know that I can connect the print data member of the panel to another object. What should that object be?
ThanksTry the "Time-Of-Day" object. Its parameters are on/off, Offset time, duration time and format (all parameters are “yellow” fields except format, which means you can use other object data members). On/off lets you disable the timer, offset time is when in the day to activate the timer (i.e. 17:00:00 for 5:00 PM), duration time is how long to pulse the timer (to tickle a panel to print you would only need 00:00.1) and anything would do for format if you don't intend to display the timer (00:00:00 would be appropriate if you display the timer). Connect the Time-of-day object implicit data member to the panel object writable print data member and you are done. When the offset time is the current time the time-of-day object pulses and the panel prints. Be aware that the area of the panel that prints is based on the Height and Width parameter values, not the position on the screen (the X and Y data members override the parameters if connected). There is more info on timers and panels in the on-line help.

Cor-el: I already saw the pages about Firefox crashes and already read through the forums; I definitely might have missed something, but I did read through all of it already and tried the solutions there before posting here...
Mad Person: About:Crashes just shows the submitted crash reports and report IDs I've listed above, with their date and time. That's it. The Report IDs are as I listed above.. none of them start with "bp-xxxx".... I disabled hardward acceleration as you recommended; I've tried it before, but firefox crashed again so I just turned it back on, but I've made lots of changes since, so who knows - I'll keep it permanently off now and see if it helps this time.
Otherwise, I'm still stuck. Even my Report IDs are weird, due to the throttling problem apparently!? Yikes! ;) -

This thread and all the followups are hilarious, if it weren't such a serious problem. OP, you may want to add a bit more information on how this drippy screen problem occurs: where do you live, what are the weather conditions, what are you doing with the Mac when it occurs, etc.
Yes, extreme moisture, to the extent of causing visible condensation, is Very Bad News for any electronic device, and more so with one that isn't tropicalized like the Mac. Besides trying to avoid subjecting it to such extreme temperature changes, using some kind of desiccant to absorb close range moisture and avoidint its use until it dried out, I can suggest placing some kind of absorbent material between the display and the keyboard to prevent the moisture on the glass from finding its way into the computer. Like the protective poliethylene foam protector that came with the Mac when new. Or something like RadTech's ScreenSavrz: http://www.radtech.us/Products/NotebookScreenSavrz.aspx -
To save battery, I leave my wifi off when the TP's screen is locked. At home, my TP has no problem reconnecting to wifi after the screen is unlocked. However, at work, which uses enterprise wifi, I can only connect the first time. If I lock the screen and then unlock it (causing the wifi to turn off and on again) then the TP will not reconnect and I would get the "Association failed" error over and over again. If I were to turn the TP off and on again, I would still get the same error. Here's the strange part, if I come in work the next day, it would be able to connect to the wifi. If I were to leave the wifi on all the time, it would not disconnect even if I lock the screen. Now if I were to turn off the wifi and then turn it on again, the TP would not reconnect. So it seems like the TP can only connect the first time each day....very strange...and frustrating.

Yet after much proding and denial you finally provide small portions of error messages which fully identify the problem and can be found in many other posts in these forums. Yet still, you haven't actually provided full output - instead you paraphrased the output after a couple of "//" symbols.
If you don't give us the actual output we can't help - except in this case the error is so common we could very easily help. So could the wiki page on wpa_supplicant if you had read it, as your problem is explictly listed there in a "NOTE" box. But more importantly if you are reluctant to give us actual output we will not want to help you.
This issue would have been solved instantly if you would have provided the actual output instead of lying about it.

I have an iPhone 4S, iPad and MacBook Air. I'm looking for a program or app that I can sync though iCloud that will allow me to us all of these devices to track time spent on projects each day along with the ability to add specific information about each project. I recommend you consider Omnifocus. It is a task management program which runs on the Mac, Iphone & Ipad. I use it for task management and project management. It let's you store additional information as well. I sync all three devices through a Mobile Me account and I can enter data on any device and it is available on all devices. I believe you can also sync through Dropbox. I'm not sure that you can sync through iCloud yet. The link to their website is: www.omnigroup.com. There may be less expensive alternatives, but this one meets my needs and syncs very well across all devices.

How to enter a new Date and Time each day in a Numbers Spreadsheet...
Hi... I have finally decided to move away from Excel and really give Numbers a shot... I have an application where each day I first enter the current date and time into a particular cell of a new row and then I enter some data in cells adjacent (in the same row) as that entered date-time. Then the next day I want to again enter the (new) current date and time and add more data next to that new date-time and so forth day after day... You can't use something as simple as =NOW() because then everyday, ALL of the date-times would change to the current time... Nope, now what I want... I just want to be able to EASILY and QUICKLY enter the current date-time value in one call and then have that specific value stay there forever... In Excel, this is accomplished with the keyboard shortcuts of
<cntl> followed by a semicolon (;) for the date
then enter a single space (for separation of date versus time) followed last by
<command> followed again by a semicolon...
So all together that is,
<cntl><;><sp><command><;>
and that puts something like
4/10/2010 9:49:00 AM
in a single cell...
That's what I now want to be able to do in Numbers...
How do I do that??? Do I use the menubar item "Insert Date and Time" and if so, how exactly do I get the current time to show up in the chosen cell??? With formatting??? Is there a keyboard shortcut method like the one I mentioned that works for Excel?? I've perused the manual and though I found lots on date-time, I didn't see how to do specifically what I want to do... I likely just missed it as surely it must be easy to do...

I do not see a way within Tidal to do this (using version 6.1.0.171), but has anyone found a workaround? I want to be able to save an attachment from a received email before Tidal deletes the email. I'm using pop3 so delete is my only option
