Quitting Aperture 2.1.4 trial takes minutes

Hi, I just installed Aperture 2.1.4 trial over my 2.1.3 trial.
Basically it works, but quitting Aperture 2.1.4 takes minutes (7 to 8 minutes). During this time, I only see the rotating beach ball.
It turns out, that the problem is Aperture accessing my Samba share where all the pictures are. If I mount the drive it takes 7 to 8 minutes to quit. If I don't mount the drive, Aperture quits immediately, as expected. Aperture 2.1.3 did quit immediately.
a) is it possible to uninstall 2.1.4 and re-install 2.1.3? I tried, but it didn't work (2.1.3 does not install after dropping 2.1.4 into trash)
b) is there a solution to this problem with quitting Aperture 2.1.4 if accessing the samba share?
I use OSX 10.5.8 on a MacBook Pro.
Thanks for any hint.

I have been having the same difficulties since installing Snow Leopard. When I perform a "software update" Aperture updates are not listed. I manually downloaded the 2.1.4 update and was then unable to install it for the same reason as above; the original 2.1 version is not recognized as even existing on the computer.
Interestingly, I have the same issue with Safari. The program disappeared from my Mac Pro during the upgrade to Snow Leopard and when I downloaded the latest Safari program and tried to install it, the installer informed me that I had to have OS X v10.5.8 or newer in order to install this program; all partitions on the computer were indicated to be unsuitable for installation including the system (10.6.2) partition. This problem persists. So what gives?
Thanks for any help
Jon

  • Safari (and Adobe Acrobat Pro) take minutes to quit!!!

    Safari 4.0.4 (and Adobe Acrobat Pro 9.2.0) take several minutes to quit on Mactel with Mac OS X 10.5.8. I thought that they had frozen after selecting to quit such applications, or logout, restart or shutdown the Mac, but if I leave the Mac for several minutes, they eventually quit.
    What can it be? The Console does not indicate any special activity.

    Thanks for the reply. Short answer: Safari, or Acrobat Pro.
    In short, if I open Safari (or Acrobat Pro, or both), and quit them after a while (a few minutes or so), no problem. They quit as expected.
    But if I open any of them (or both) in the morning (I cold boot the Mac in the morning and shut it down at night every single day) and try to quit any of them (Safari or Acrobat) at night, each one of them takes several minutes to quit. In fact, if instead of quitting them I try to shut down, I get the error:
    "Logout has timed out" - "The application Safari failed to quit and is not responding"
    or
    "Logout has timed out" - "The application Acrobat failed to quit and is not responding"
    If then I leave the Mac idle a few minutes and them try to shut down the Mac again, it shuts down (this time, immediately; in one second or so).
    IN SUMMARY. Something is preventing Safari (and the same for Acrobat Pro) to shut down normally in a few seconds. Instead, they need minutes to shut down.

  • Aperture 3.3.1 frequently "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture

    Since I've upgraded to Aperture 3.3 (now 3.3.1), Aperture frequently (almost 100%) spends time "Updating Library" when I quit Aperture.  This takes like 40 mins to do.  I've fixed permissions and repaired the library but no difference.
    Does anyone else have this problem?  I was hoping 3.3.1 would fix this problem but it doesn't.  Next plan would be to rebuild the library but that will take a long time!
    Jason

    Sadly, you are on the cutting edge of the deployment of Aperture 3.3.x (along with many other posters here).  The answer to your unasked questions -- "What is going on, and how can I fix it?" -- is "We don't know yet".  Since you have upgraded to 3.3.1, and have let Aperture more than once run through whatever it is doing when it says "Updating Library" and it continues to update the Library for 40 minutes every time you close the Library, I advise you to go ahead with rebuilding the database.  IME, this rarely takes longer than 10 hours, and can be run overnight.
    I have rebuilt Libraries many times and have never seen a Library damaged by the rebuild.  Nevertheless, you should have a complete and verified back-up before doing any maintenance on any Library.
    Let us know what you do, and what the result is.  Thanks.

  • I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working really slow, so I attempting to close aperture and reopen it but it won't quit aperture and now it won't open up to my photos either.  Any ideas?

    I was editing photos and it was getting stuck or frozen and working very slowly.  I attempted to restart the computer but it would not allow me to quit aperture.  Now aperture appears in my toolbar but will not open up so I can work on any photos.  Any ideas?

    Did you try opening from the Applications folder?
    Depending on how far that gets you, I would also take a look at the Troubleshooting Basics.

  • Can't stop import; can't quit Aperture

    I have downloaded the trial version of Aperture 3.0.2 and started to play around with it. I'm in trouble already.
    Under "New" I created and named a new slideshow, then using Inspector>import>show iPhoto Browser I selected one photo and dragged it to the slideshow.
    I shoot in RAW and the image I chose to import was an edited (in iPhoto) version of the original.
    The import has been going for an hour so far. When I try to quit Aperture, a message appears saying that Aperture is in the process of importing and asking if I want to quit anyway. When I click the 'quit' button, nothing happens. Force Quit isn't available either.
    So, three questions:
    1. Short of shutting down, is there a way to get Aperture to quit?
    2. What have I done wrong?
    3. If I ever get this worked out and export the slideshow to create a .mov file, do I still use iDVD to burn to disc?

    I'm not doing very well at all. I used the on/off button to close down the computer and that did get me out of Aperture. Now when I try to move a photo/event using File>import>iPhoto browser, the message is that there is nothing to show. I have checked both the HD and the ext. drive and the iPhoto library is intact in both places as are calendars and books.
    I have repaired permissions and restarted the computer.
    I don't know what to do next. I have searched for this issue and all I could find were others who had had the same problem, but no real solutions. The problem seemed to sort itself out. Maybe I didn't search far enough.

  • I have to Force Quit Aperture all the time

    Whenever I sit down to edit photos, Aperture hangs and I have to Force Quit and start again. This happens all the time. I used to think it happens only when I process raw images, but I've found that it happens with jpegs too. Apple once told me I should Repair Permissions and/or Repair Database and/or Rebuild Database. I did all three last night. This morning Aperture hung on the first picture I tried to crop. I am starting to get so frustrated that I am thinking I should change software because Apple doesn't seem to care about this product as I could find no support numbers to call.
    Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?

    Hi jimchall -- welcome to the Aperture user-to-user forum.
    I think many people have experienced similar frustration. Determining what's causing your problems is going to take time, however.
    My number one suggestion is: don't force quit Aperture. Which brings up the question, how do you know Aperture is hung up? Until your problems are sorted, it's a good idea to keep the Aperture Activity Window open -- it will keep you semi-informed about what Aperture is up to. (If you are comfortable with computers, I recommend also using iStat Menus 3, or equivalent, to monitor your memory, disk, and CPU & GPU status.)
    Aperture does a lot of work in the basement (as it were) while you are busy (or not) decorating the upper floors. This is most apparent after large imports (of, for instance, an iPhoto Library), when the downstairs work can completely suspend any work being done upstairs. No notification is given to the user when this happens -- you see the spinning pinwheel, and the Force Quit utility will even report that Aperture is not responding -- but, in many many cases, Aperture is, in fact, working. Let it work. In my experience with Aperture, force-quitting almost always makes problems worse, and should be avoided.
    Some of the first problem areas to rule out are from hardware. What computer are you running Aperture on? How much RAM? How big a drive? How much free space on that drive? Where is your Library located? Are you having any problems running any other software? Are you using any unusual peripherals? Is your network in any way involved in your Aperture set-up?
    Then, of course, software: are Aperture and OS X completely up-dated? Have you modified the OS in any way? Has Aperture ever worked properly?
    The next general trouble-shooting steps are to (temporarily) disable two of the more processor-intensive parts of Aperture. Go to the Preferences dialog, and turn off "Faces", and turn off "Share Previews". (Once Aperture is working properly for you, these can be turned back on.)
    Then reboot, launch Aperture -- and let it run for several hours (keep you computer plugged in and set to not sleep). It can take many hours -- days even -- to completely process a very large import.
    You have taken the steps to confirm that you Library is healthy. Stick with it, and with the help of the people on this forum you should be able to figure out what is holding you up.

  • I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialog box so large I can't get to the eject card button.   I have to force quit Aperture.  How do I fix?

    I just upgraded to Snow Leopard, and I have Aperture 3.1.3.  Now after I import pics from my camera I get a dialogue box so large that I can't see the eject card button.  Consequently, I can't get rid of the dialogue box without having to do a force quit on Aperture.  How do I fix?

    I can drag the dialog box, but I can't move it up far enough to get to the eject card button.  The dialogue box contains all the jpeg Numbers I am trying to upload.  It has never done that before.  It used to be just a smal dialogue box with no jpeg numbers in it.
    It is even difficult to get to the Finder with the Dialague box is open.  I have to force quit aperture.
    Any ideas would be appreciated.

  • Dialog with a lot of XML content takes minutes to open in IE7.

    Good day to all.
    This is my first week with JDeveloper ADF, so, please, be forgiving. I have a page, which has this code
    <af:commandButton text="Show XML" id="cl2"
    action="dialog:showxml" useWindow="true"
    windowHeight="200" windowWidth="500"
    partialSubmit="true">
    When clicked, this one is invoked:
    <f:verbatim>
    <jsp:include page="xml_original.xml"/>
    </f:verbatim>
    The xml file is 500KB. The dialog pops up very fast in Firefox, but in IE7 it takes minutes to open. When opening it in the page, without the dialog, the performance is fast.
    Please help.
    Thank you.

    Does it open fast when you load the xml file manually in IE (without using it from the ADF / dialog)?
    something like http://<host>:<port>/..../xml_original.xml ?

    == Some time back, beggining with Firefox updates, at least three, or more updates ago.

    Thanks for the tip. I took the following steps:
    1) Backed up the existing profile (presumably corrupted somewhere);
    2) Deleted the existing profile;
    3) Moved the existing Firefox to the Trash and downloaded a fresh copy;
    4) Started Firefox (thus allowing it to create its default profile)
    5) Copied the following files from the backup copy of the previous profile: places.sqlite, key3.db, signons.sqlite, permissions.sqlite, persdict.dat, cert8.db ---
    I'm posting this from a Firefox browser, so I guess I'm OK now.

  • Firefox takes minutes to load upon starting up and changing web pages

    When I open firefox in Windows Vista, it takes minutes(sometimes up to ten) to start up.Once firefox has loaded and I go to visit another web page, it takes minutes to load that web page. I downloaded Firefox 3.6.7 when it first came out, and it just recently started doing this. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox, but this did not work. It is not a problem with my internet connection or operating system, because internet explorer and safari only takes seconds to load up and load web pages. I have run various scans to see if it was a virus or a bug, but nothing came up. How do I fix this, because using Internet Explorer is really getting on my nerves?

  • Problems with illustrator CS3. loading drawings, swatches everything takes minutes

    Since a couple of days the problems started at my office. All pc's started to have problems with illustrator and photoshop. But most of all illustrator. On start-up it is quick as it used to be but when i want to load a drawing, swatch or symbol it takes minutes. I don't know if it has to do with an update or something else. I only know that it started a few days ago on all pc's but not on the mac's.
    Thanks in advance,

    What exactly is a few days ago? The last Windows Update was on last Tuesday. Except for a .NET fix and various Office patches it did not seem to have anything critical, but it may be possible that it affects your computers. It's a far cry, though. More likely it's a virus scanner or something with your network settings, that causes erratic file opening behavior. Hard to tell without more info. your description is too generic and vague.
