Quitting Safari

Hi there,
I've been encountering a problem with Safari all day long since my last security update (I choose to shut it down rather than restarting it). This morning (when I turned my Mac on), every time I try to open Safari it "quite unexpectedly". I have used the search option in this forum and tried to use the old, posted solution but still Safari keeps quitting on me.
My Mac version is 10.4.7.
And here's the report I received just in case:

I suspect that as you shut down instead of restarting the update did not complete properly, it is not strange that help is crashing as it uses the same frameworks as safari.
You must restart when the computer asks you to - not shut down.
Download the combo update from here and the security update from here to fix the problem.
You need to remove the receipts for the .7 update and security update from <harddrive>/Library/Receipts ( called MacOSXUpd10.4.7PPCPatch.pkg and SecUpd2006-004Ti.pkg ) before the updates will take again.
Apply the .7 update and restart then the security update and restart.
For future reference Shut Downis not the same as Restart.

    .

Yes, you have to quit Safari for the Flash Installer to complete the installation process. It's sounds as if you've download Flash Player and are trying to install it?

  • Why does safari not work on my MacBook pro when I close it and forget to quit safari?

So I'll close my MacBook with safari "X"ed out but not quit. When I open my MacBook up about an hour or so later, I'll click on safari mad it doesn't load... It's not that big of a deal, it's just annoying to have to restart my computer every time I want to go on safari.

Try resetting Safari. From the Safari menu select "Reset Safari..." and check at least the two boxes "close all Safari windows" and "remove all website data".
Quit Safari from the Safari menu.
Hold a Shift key as you launch Safari again from the Dock.

  • Force quit Safari

    hello everyone,
I have a curious problem with Safari. It has worked beautifully for me in Snow Leopard, so much so that I almost never launch Chrome or Firefox anymore. But, in the last 24 hours or so it's become erratic and unusable. I can't imagine anything I might have done to contribute to this problem. I often run Safari with three or four windows open, and a number of tabs on each window. Never been a problem until now. I believe the following to be the correct sequence of events since yesterday afternoon when I first noticed the problem.
I always have Safari running along with Mail, Prevue, TextEdit and a couple of other programs. Yesterday I was mailing a few parcels. I purchase postage electronically using a program called Endicia which tabulates the correct amount, validates the address etc. I have a Zebra 2844 thermal printer for this application. Two or three times in the last year while printing labels I have switched back and forth to another application (using the command+tab function) and have found myself with the dreaded screen freeze. Years ago we just pulled the plug when that happened but now with my laptop I usually just hold down the on/off button until the screen goes black and the computer turns off.
I had such a screen freeze yesterday. I turned the machine off and back on, and re-launched the programs I was using, including Safari. When launching Safari I immediately clicked on the history tab and opened all the windows from the last session. That's when the problem started. While navigating to a new page, either with a mouse click or using the command+L function and typing an address the program would respond and a few seconds later I had a spinning beach ball on my screen. I'd wait for a couple of seconds and then look up the force quit window to see if Safari had stopped responding, and it always had. I'd force quit the program and try again. After four tries I gave up and launched Firefox. I tried Safari again this morning, albeit without shutting down, and I encountered the same problem again. It worked for a minute or two and then it would stop responding.
An aside. I noticed yesterday after re-booting my machine that bluetooth was not functioning properly. At my office I have a bluetooth keyboard and mouse and neither would respond to a pairing request. I turned bluetooth on and off three or four times, as well as the devices, and finally something clicked and they began working again. This may having nothing whatever to do with the Safari problem, but I've learned in the last 15 years or so (I started with OS 6) to provide as much detail as you can when describing problems. I should also add I'm lazy about clearing the history or cookie caches (hope I'm saying that correctly).
Hope you all have a great weekend, and thanks for reading... If anyone has any suggestions about this issue I'd love to hear them.
    Best wishes,
    Tim

There is something wrong with your safari brower, I would make sure that you are running 6.0, or whatever you current version is, and then if you still have the problem I would hold down command+option+esc and force quit safari. I hope you solve your problem. I am a newbie so please say that I solved your question. Thanks a ton

  • Before every time I use to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore and instead is an automatically website calle Only Search. I went to Safari preference I change everything and when I quit Safari all the changes are gone.

Every time I used to open a new tab it comes as top site. Now not anymore , instead it open in a website called Only Search, I went to safari preferences and made all changes but after I quit Safari and open again all changes are gone. I can not change anything and new tab comes by it self with other website.

There is no need to download anything to solve this problem.
You may have installed the "Downlite" or "VSearch" ad-injection malware. Follow the instructions on this Apple Support page to remove it.
Back up all data before making any changes.
Besides the files listed in the support article, you may also need to remove this item in the same way:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ConduitNPAPIPlugin.plugin
One of the steps in the article is to remove malicious Safari extensions. Do the equivalent in the Chrome and Firefox browsers, if you use either of those. If Safari crashes on launch, skip that step and come back to it after you've done everything else.
If you don't find any of the files or extensions listed, or if removing them doesn't stop the ad injection, then you may have one of the other kinds of adware covered by the support article. Follow the rest of the instructions in the article.
The problem may have started when you downloaded and ran an application called "MPlayerX." That's the name of a legitimate free movie player, but the name is also used fraudulently to distribute VSearch. If there is an item with that name in the Applications folder, delete it, and if you wish, replace it with the genuine article from mplayerx.org.
This malware is often found on illegal websites that traffic in pirated content such as movies. If you, or anyone else who uses the computer, visit such sites and follow prompts to install software, you can expect more of the same, and worse, to follow. Never install any software that you downloaded from a bittorrent, or that was downloaded by someone else from an unknown source.
In the Security & Privacy pane of System Preferences, select the General tab. The radio button marked Anywhere  should not be selected. If it is, click the lock icon to unlock the settings, then select one of the other buttons. After that, don't ignore a warning that you are about to run or install an application from an unknown developer.
Still in System Preferences, open the App Store or Software Update pane and check the box marked
Install system data files and security updates
    if it's not already checked.

  • When quitting safari I used to get a dialogue box with checkboxes, useful if I accidentally pressed command q, but now option seems to have disappeared. Any ideas why or how to retrieve it please?

I used to get a dialogue box when quitting safari, which was useful if accidentally hitting 'command q', but has now disappeared leading to lost work etc.
Any idea why, or how I can get this useful option back please?

Now resolved, after chatting to Apple online support, who said they'd not heard of this happening - solved it quickly enough though.
Anyone interested or suffering similar I was told to remove website data from privacy tab in Safari preferences. And yes, I'd love to know how it worked too.....
    Great thanks to Apple.

  • I have a message on my Mac book pro that says "suspicious activity might have been detected".  I can't get rid of it even if I force quit Safari or if I turn my computer off.  What can I do?

I got a message on my MacBook pro screen that says " Safari Alert" and then goes on to say "suspicious activity might have been detected".  It doesn't let me exit the site and keeps reappearing even after I force quit Safari and even after I shut down my computer and turn it back on.  What can I do?

Launch Safari with the Shift key held down. If that doesn’t work, disconnect the computer from the Internet.

I Cannot launch Safari or quit Safari. The Quit Safari option is not active or highlighted in the Safari menu. I tried to shut down and Log Out but cannot because Safari must close first. I have checked for software upgrades and there are none. What do I need to do to use Safari Or shut down Safari?

    Hey there KeelyBoley,
If you are still not able to quit Safari, or shutdown/restart your Mac, I would force quit the application with any of these instructions that work for you:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit
Choose Quit by right-clicking or control-clicking on an app's icon in the Dock.
If your app does not close using the steps above, use any of these steps to force the app to quit:
Switch to another app, such as the Finder, then choose Force Quit from the Apple menu. Select the unresponsive app in the Force Quit window, and click Force Quit.
Press Command-Option-Esc, then select the unresponsive app from the Force Quit window that appears, and click Force Quit.
If Safari continues to become unresponsive such as in this case, a 3rd party plug-in may be the culprit, and this article will help you troubleshoot that:
Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the best,

If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide, AdwareMedic, or Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
    Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
    Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

From user Joe Bailey comes this equally useful advice:
    The facts are:
    1. There is no anti-malware software that can detect 100% of the malware out there.
    2. There is no anti-malware that can detect everything targeting the Mac.
    3. The very best way to prevent the most attacks is for you as the user to be aware that
the most successful malware attacks rely on very sophisticated social engineering
techniques preying on human avarice, ****, and fear.
    4. Internet popups saying the FBI, NSA, Microsoft, your ISP has detected malware on
your computer is intended to entice you to install their malware thinking it is a
        protection against malware.
    5. Some of the anti-malware products on the market are worse than the malware
from which they purport to protect you.
    6. Be cautious where you go on the internet.
    7. Only download anything from sites you know are safe.
    8. Avoid links you receive in email, always be suspicious even if you get something
you think is from a friend, but you were not expecting.
    9. If there is any question in your mind, then assume it is malware.

No, it is not. But I found that "Xmarks for Safari" was running. So I quit that and it worked. So I am guessing you are not querying "safari" but something like "safari".

  • How can I get Safari 5.1 to open without opening all the tabs that were open when i last quit safari?

When I lauch Safari (5.1 in 10.7) I want it to open to either an empty page or a designated homepage - but istead it opens all the tabs that were open when I quit Safari.  How do i stop this, I cant find any preference to achieve this and see nothing in help.  Any help?

Hi James - Thanks for the info!  This has been bugging me, too.  I'm going to uncheck the Restore Windows box.  Agree with you that it should be app specific, tho.  I like opening to the last page I was working on in pages and numbers.  Hope it doesn't change that!

  • Can't quit Safari

Several times now, when I choose to end a session in Safari, neither 'CMD+Q' or 'Safari>Quit' Safari work. In fact, the 'Quit Safari' option is greyed out and choosing 'Quit' from the dock yields no response.
Logging out doesn't work, nor does shutting down, as Safari cancels logout. All that works is a 'Force Quit' but of course, that doesn't solve the problem.
I have seen from other forums, both on this site and elsewhere, that this is a common and well-known problem, and has been for some time, so I assume Apple is aware of it. If they are, I must say I'm dismayed by the lack of support.
Sorry if I'm coming off as cranky here, but it's rather frustrating and I'm this close to abandoning my beloved Safari for another browser.
Does anyone have a real solution to this problem? Or know of a way I can find one?
    Thank you in advance.

90% of the time only one account is affected. Create a test account or use the Guest account.
If you can establish that it is only one account you could remove all Safari files from that account as follows:
First export bookmarks then quit Safari.
Open Terminal - in Utilities and paste all the commands below - make sure it is the same as here - particularly first and last characters - then hit return - it will save your Safari folder with a date stamp on your Desktop and delete several files. Start safari, reset preferences and import bookmarks.
    mv ~/Library/Safari ~/Desktop/Safari-`date +%Y%m%d%H%M%S`; \
