Quizzing Questions

I'm new to Captivate and these boards. I saw new,
but I'm really self taught. I took an Element K course, and we've
also purchased the Iconlogic book.
But I still have a few questions that I can't find the
answers to, and here's one of them: I want to put a question at the
end of each "concept" of my training. But I don't want the Question
blank of blank to show up, and I don't want it to be part of the
score that goes to the LMS. I think I can figure out the score to
LMS part; I think the answer is I just name the quiz differently.
But I can't get the Question X out of X to go away. I"ll take any
help!

Hi eetten and welcome to the forums!
Unfortunately, the only way to mix scored and non-scored
questions in a single file is to... split the project into two
files.
Captivate expects a quiz to consist only of scored
interactions, so you can't even include a "Continue" button without
throwing off the total question count. It's very problematic for
scoring summary purposes.
I'd suggest putting in a feature request to add an "exclude
from scoring" option to future versions of Captivate, which you can
do here:

  • Quizzes: Questions and Answers are overlapping in

After creating quizzes in the Quiz Manager, the questions and answers are overlapping in my presentation.
I tried playing with the Appearance options of the Quiz manager and the Master Slide but nothing seem to help.
Also, the radio buttons are not constantly aligned with their corresponding answers.
    Could you please help me?
    Thank you

There's actually a couple of reasons why the question element and it's corresponding "distractor" (aka the answer) are not lining up.  First and foremost, using the Appearance feature is only really meant to configure the styling of your text elements; its not very useful at all when it comes to alignment issues and that's what's going on with your example (thanks for providing the jpg!!!)
Need to ask you this: did you make any changes to your answers "after-the-fact"?  Meaning, that at one time you had an answer programmed into your question, but then did you decided to manually change your answer on the slide WITHOUT going back into the Quiz Manager to do so?
I ask b/c I've seen instances where editing the answer/distractor to a question messes up the vertical alignment of the text element.
That said, here's what you can try: If you select the "grouped" text box for the answer, you can change it's vertical alignment by setting it to "top".
Just remember that all answers that are created by Presenter are grouped items and MUST REMAIN SO!  Do NOT ungroup any of the question components, or your question will cease to function properly.
One other thing you need to know: the placement of the question elements (radio buttons, distractors, etc) are ABSOLUTELY controlled by the positioning of your Slide Master's Text Frame.  This is why your question paragraph is being impacted by the question item (answer) that follows.

  • Quizz questions will not publish

Every time I put a quiz in a presentation when I publish it, the quiz does not appear in the Flash video.
Does anyone have an idea what is going on?

    G'day Nealdog,
could you tell me a bit more about the process you're using as I can't understand why it's not working. If you've got your P'Point presentation and you click on the Adobe Presenter tab to create and manage your quiz, I can see no reason why it wouldn't publish properly EXCEPT, if after you create your quiz you try to move the slides around in the presentation - that may break the linking between the questions in the quiz causing it to not work.
Just need to confirm, when you publish you see no questiions at all - that's correct?
    Cheers

  • Using the Skip Question Function in Quizzes

I am using Captivate 3. My users want to be able to go
through a graded quiz, skip questions and return to answer them
later --before their score is final. The help screens indicate that
    this is possible:
"If you want to give users the opportunity to skip a question
and return to answer it at a later time, add a Skip button. This
button is optional, but can give users greater navigation control
    as they work through quizzes."
After users answer the last question in a quiz, the Results
screen appears and it is not possible for them to return to the
    skipped questions.
What advice do you have about effectively using the Skip
function and explaining it clearly to users?
    Thanks,

    Hi evons
I am going to go out on a very shaky limb here (to quote from
    another post many moons ago).
Add another slide just before your Results slide with a
button that takes users back to the first question slide, thus
allowing them to work through all the questions again. Haven't
tested this, but the theory works for me. Obviously you would also
have a Continue burron on the same slide that moves forward to the
    results slide.
Being a vary lazy type by nature, I would appreciate it if
you could let me know on the success or failure of the above. Thus
alleviating my need to test the same :)
PS Any of you other geniuses out there with another idea are
welcome to climb in on this one!!!

  • Tips for creating quizzes and questions

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/presenter/using/WS1C0CA4CD-0EE9-42af-9D7C-FF810A4128A7.html

When I create a quiz question, the feedback and correct/incorrect messages default with a very unattractive fill color. It will distract the learners. How can I correct this? This color is not showing up in Themes or in the Quiz Appearance pane.

  • Quizzes - More than 1 question per screen

    Hi There,
I am new to capptivate this week and am wanting to know if
anyone knows how to place more than one quiz question on a single
    screen?
    Many thanks in advance

    Welcome to our community, Ali
Nope. One question per slide is what you get with Captivate.
We do see this come up on a fairly regular basis, so it must be a
reasonably common request. One that you should alert the
    development team to.

    Some pointers:
    [list]
[*]don't use relative URL's that are rooted at the "slash", especially if you're running Apache/JServ. The Apache/JServ has a buggy version of getRealPath() -- a servlet API method -- and it doesn't return the right information for URL's like this. Best is to always use fully-relative URL's.
[*]Removing the namespace is not the right way to go. You have to make sure that you declare a namespace prefix in the stylesheet that uses the exact same namespace URI as the one you're trying to match against, then you MUST use prefix-qualified names like xxx:Foo/xxx:Bar/xxx:Baz to match elements with qualified names in the particular namespace.
    [list]
For example, if your source XML looks like:
<!-- Note use of DEFAULT namespace -->
    <data xmlns="x-schema:http://www.schemas.multex.com/glearnestapisrv.xdr">
    <row>
    <ename>Steve</ename>
    </row>
</data>Then you stylesheet needs to look like this to match the <row>/<data>/<ename> element:
<!-- NOTE that XPath CANNOT match on default namespace -->
    <xsl:stylesheet version="1.0"
    xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"

  • CP7 quizzes with multiple question banks not working

    Hello there
I have worked 2 weeks on creating a quiz to be published in HTML5 and now that I am finally ready to publish it appears that CP7 has a problem when publishing a quiz with all random questions taken from more than 4 question pools.
Up to 3 question pools HTML5 works like a charm but add a 4th one and it all goes to hell.
I have 60 questions taken from 11 question pools and many questions appear blank (just the background appears and the slide keeps going for its 3 seconds untill it automatically jumps to the next question not giving the possibility to answer and therefore scoring it negatively. (the answer all questions is active).
Now if I publish the same project as SWF the quiz has no problems and works just fine but I would really like to be able to have people take the quiz on their iPad and also I was actually going to convert it into an iPad app but that now appears impossible to do.
Is there a solution to the problem? Is CP7 limited to 3 Question Pools when publishing as HTML5?
    As usual thanks in advance

    Hi there,
During HTML5 publish, are you getting a warning with the text ' There are more random question slides than questions available in the pool...’. If yes, then can you please take the corrective action and see it resolves the issue or not?
In case if you are facing this issue with proper number of question, random question slides, then please share the .cptx file with us so that we can investigate the issue at our end. Please upload it to a shared workspace (Acrobat.com) and send me the link to [email protected]
    Thanks,

  • How can I make multiple quizzes with their own results slides within one project of Captivate 7?

In one Captivate 7 project I want to create multiple quizzes with their own results slide.
Currently I have 5 quizzes that all are linked to 1 results slide.
Is there a way to give each set of questions their own results slide?
(I saw a response to a similar question for Captivate 5 from 2012, but I couldn't get much use out of is and I figured there was an easier way in Captivate 7).
    Any help would be appreciated!
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply Lilybiri!
I checked out the link and it's useful, however your other plan might work better for me:
Either you link to separate CP-files that have each their quiz, or you can show intermediate results slides (see link below), but you have to know that the score that will be transmitted to a LMS is the total score of all the quizzes.
But how exactly do I link separate CP-files?  Do I have to publish them first and then link them, or can I link them before I publish?
If you could shoot me a link or some advice I'd greatly appreciate it.  I'm finishing up a huge project that is due at the end of the day and this quiz issue is one of the last things keeping me from being finished.
    Thanks!

  • How can I make multiple quizzes within one Captivate project?

Hi guys! Really liking Captivate 5.5, especially the way random question slides can lift questions out of a question pool...very elegant!
Sadly though, I've come up against a bit of a wall. In my project, I want to have 3 separate quizzes that all use the same question pool; a 10, 30 and 50 question-long quiz. Each one needs to have its own results page.
It's easy enough to see what I mean by looking at the screenshot below:
The idea was to have about 105 slides in total, with slides 10 - 20 being the 10 quiz slide, 21 - 51 being the 30 question quiz and 52 - 102 being the 50 question quiz.
There are three invisible buttons placed over those 10, 30, 50 text boxes. In the picture, the '10 question' button would jump to slide 10, the '30 question' button would jump to slide 21, and the '50 question' button would jump to slide 52, jumping the user to the start of their designated tests.
Though I can create the 10 random question "block" easy enough, when it comes to adding the 30 question "block" it just adds the new random questions to the existing random questions. I want three separate quizzes, each with their own results screens please. (I don't want to daisy-chain to external projects, because the results of each test need to be used within the homepage.)
It just adds them on to the existing block!! Argh!!
Little bit ticked off with Adobe...the reason their products are so incredible is because they put no constraints on the user, and you can use their tools to create things even the developers never dreamed of. Like in Photoshop for example, I bet when the dropshadow fx was created, the developers never realised that it would be used to give a metallic 'stamped' look to text by turning it to white and applying it just inside the text.
Captivate, though amazing most of the time, has a nasty habit of stomping on my toes. You can't set grade boundaries and have quizzes give out grades A+ to F- for example. You can only have 'pass' and 'fail', thus making it rather pointless for use in schools, contrary to how the program is advertised. Another example would be when I wanted to create a replay button. I thought that a button that jumped to the slide it was on would be a simple, no-BS replay button, but for some reason you can't make a button jump to its current slide. I downloaded a widget that worked in the end, but I wish Adobe would get off my back and let me do what I want!
Anyway, if you could help me out here it would be grand

I must say I have a little sympathy for the Captivate developers on this occasion.  As you say, they've created an application that does so much, that when you eventually run into a hard boundary of some kind, the effect is somewhat jarring.  However, every application, no matter how good, has limits.  I'm probably one of the worst offenders when it comes to asking the Adobe Captivate Development Team for enhancements (I think I've logged over 70 enhancement requests for Captivate 6 alone).
In your case, you want to have three different quizzes in one project file, each with it's own separate Quiz Results page.  Lilybiri's blog explains how to set up your own faux Quiz Results pages using system variables and custom user variables, but you're going to find this to be quite a lot of trouble.  Even if YOU want to consider these as three separate quizzes, as far as Captivate is concerned they're just one big quiz with 50 questions.  So Captivate will calculate it's internal results based on a 50 question quiz, even if your users select the 10 question version.  So achieving a final Pass/Fail result is going to be problematic at best.
As Lilybiri suggested, your better strategy would be to break this up into separate modules so that you can get your three separate quiz results (all done in standard Captivate) as well as correct results based on the actual number of questions done by the user.
As far as grades A-F is concerned, there's nothing to stop you from using Advanced Actions and User Variables to calculate the user's score as a grade.  You need a user variable that stores the user's grade (e.g. var_Grade). And you need a fairly complex Conditional Advanced Action (e.g. caa_CalculateGrade) with several clauses each of which goes something like:
    If
cpQuizInfoPointsscored is lesser or equal to [highest score for a particular grade]
    AND
greater or equal to [lowest score for a particular grade]
    Actions
Assign var_Grade with [the appropriate grade for that range of scores]
Your conditional action will need one of these clauses for each separate grade.  Once your variable has been assigned a grade based on the user's score, you can display it in a text caption somewhere on the quiz results page or on a slide thereafter with suitable commendations/ commiserations.

  • How to create multiple modules in quizzes in single file?

    Hi,
Can someone guide me how to create a multiple module quizzes under one captivate file ( captivate 5.5 ver)
I have a quiz.cptx file with 50 questions from different chapters A,B,C,D,E with 10 questions in each chapter.
    The scenario
Note : min 80% score  per chapter is the passing criteria
    1. Start the quiz after login and password
    2. Start the quiz for chapter A ( 10 questions)
    3. score for chapter A should be displayed
    4. If "cpQuizInfoPointsscored"'s  value < = 40 ; ie 80 % for chapter A
review of the failed questions in the chapter
             OR
retake quiz for that chapter should be triggered,
       else goto chapter B
    5. Start the quiz for chapter B ( 10 questions)
    3. score for chapter B should be displayed
    5. If "cpQuizInfoPointsscored"'s  value < = 40 ; ie 80 % for chapter B
review of the failed questions in the chapter
             OR
retake quiz for that chapter should be triggered,
       else goto chapter C
    6. //rly with other chapters
    7. After passing all chapters the result should be printer based on the scores.
Is there any better ideas to crack the steps 4 - 6, bcz i am not able to reset the value of "cpQuizInfoPointsscored"; which is incremented as each question is completed.

    Welcome to the forum,
Agree totally with Rod, this can be done with advanced actions (have some examples on my blog), but it is a lot of work. And the Quizzing system variables such as cpQuizINfoPointsscored are all read only, no way to change them by advanced actions at all.
If you want to transfer variable values from one file to another, like from the different quiz files to a main file (to take decisions over there about possible branchings), you should have a look at Michael Lund's Save & Load Data widget:

  • A few questions if you please.

Hi there, its taken me about a week to find my way to these forums, I have to say, they look pretty nifty.
So, I'm new here .. I began to teach myself Java about a week ago, I have a book by Mr Barry Burd, have installed Jcreater and, I've started chewing my way through Barrys book.
My background is in web design, Xhtml, CSS and I have a great love of php and mysql, although Java will be my first trip into the world of OOP.
I haven't really had any problems with the basic stuff so far, at a basic level its all nice and procedural, and even feels a little like php, I'm sure this will change soon though.
My confusion is probably born of the fact that the book I'm using to learn from is possibly out of date.
Since im fast approaching the end of this "beginners" book, im going o need something more.... shall we say "meaty" to get my teeth into soon.
Im especially looking for something to introduce me to Coding GUI's and i need to get a proper feel for OOP... so id appreciate any recommendations on either books to go and buy ... or online tutorials to read.
I'm mainly confused about what the latest version of Java is .... and what the different variants are, and what they're typically used for.
The book I have is the Dummies book on "beginning Java 2" .... which sounded fine ... but when i went to download the software he suggested, it looked to me like i was downloading java 6 .... could someone clear this up for me?
I really don't want to be learning from an "out of date source"
ok, so in summary, because i realize that I've been waffling for some time =P
    1) Can anyone recommend Books / Online tutorials for starting to code GUI's.
    2) Can someone clarify the current version of Java we are on, and maybe help me understand some of the different variants.
Basically this isn't a programming question at all.... I'm sure they will follow .... I need some terminology explaining.
Sorry for the long post, but as its my first i thought i should make it a good one =P.
Thank you in advance to anyone who helps me

    Hi and welcome :)
The latest version of java is 6 (1.6). But For learning java2 (1.4.x) is good enough. Stick to the Java SE (standard edition) first.
Another recommendation is NOT to use an IDE (JCreator) until you got the concepts of classpath and packaging. This is the regular list for beginners:
    Sun's basic Java tutorial
Sun's New To Java Center. Includes an overview of what Java is, instructions for setting up Java, an intro to programming (that includes links to the above tutorial or to parts of it), quizzes, a list of resources, and info on certification and courses.
http://javaalmanac.com . A couple dozen code examples that supplement The Java Developers Almanac.
jGuru. A general Java resource site. Includes FAQs, forums, courses, more.
JavaRanch. To quote the tagline on their homepage: "a friendly place for Java greenhorns." FAQs, forums (moderated, I believe), sample code, all kinds of goodies for newbies. From what I've heard, they live up to the "friendly" claim.
Bruce Eckel's Thinking in Java (Available online.)
    Joshua Bloch's Effective Java
Bert Bates and Kathy Sierra's Head First Java.
James Gosling's The Java Programming Language. Gosling is
the creator of Java. It doesn't get much more authoritative than this.
Regarding GUI programming you can have a look at this tutorial:
    http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/index.html
    Have fun!
    EDIT: @Rene :shakefist:

  • How do I set up a Bonus question in a Quiz?

I have a 30-question multiple-choice quiz that is graded, and would like to add a "bonus" question at the end-- so that if the user answers correctly they get extra points, but if they don't answer or answer incorrectly there are no consequences (and the final score is still out of 30 questions).
    Is that possible to do?
    Using Captivate 7.
    Thanks!

Do I understand this correctly: final score can be either the result of the 30MCQ slides or the sum of those slides + bonus question result? But the passing score remains the same?
You could use 'Branch aware' in the Quiz settings. The result is that all system quizzing variables will be related either to the 30 MCQ slides or to those+bonus question: total score obtained will be higher but also the total max. score, number of questions etc. Is this what you want?

  • How do I create an entire class as a long video with quizzes every now and then.

I am creating classes documentary video style. I would like my students to watch them and take quizzes at certain points in the video to make sure they are watching.  I also want to control their playback. I can't have them skipping forwards, yet I want them to be able to go back. Is there a way to do this in captivate? Is captivate the right program for me?
    Thanks,
    Jesse

    Hi Jesse,
    This seems possible with Captivate.
Do you have an already made video for that documentary in any video file format?
If you have a video then in Captivate, you can insert that video as a multi slide synchronized video (Video > Insert video > Multi slide video ), it means that single video will be distributed to a number of slides in Captivate.
You can also, later on decide how much part of video should stay on which slide and the slide duration, from video management in Captivate (Video > Video Management).
Within those slides you can insert question slides in Captivate.
If you do not want the play bar at the bottom, or want to customize that, you can do so, by going into Project > Skin Editor in Captivate.
You can also insert a table of contents and check the option to navigate visited slides only.
    Thanks.

  • Air runtime questions

    Hi all,
We're eyeing Air suspiciously and thinking about trying to use it for distributing various apps.
Our main concerns are all about the runtime licence model.
    1) The Runtime distiribution licence agreement says:
Licensee may not distribute the Adobe AIR installer or installer files for purposes of bypassing installation of the Adobe AIR Runtime, an Adobe AIR application, or the EULA.
Does this mean if we bundled the runtime distribution installer on a CD and tried ot install it as part of our installer using the -silent install method we would actually be breaking the licence agreement?
2)Say we install the runtime this way and then our app. A new version of air comes out, the user is then quizzed by Air whether they want to upgrade.
There is no way to avoid this?
    3) And when if they do upgrade I've heard a lot of stories about apps suddenly becoming unuseable. Can someone confirm it doesn't just break the app beacuse it wasn't written for that version, it is simply that runtimes are not backward compatible?
I think I know the answers to these questions but I need to ask to get total clarity as basicaly it seems ludicrous if you want Air to be taken up by the raft of developers who, like me, are desperate to walk away from mdm Zinc.
    ta...

    1. There is a redistribution agreement you can sign to bundle an AIR Runtime with your app. installer.
    2. Setting Manager can set to stop update.
    3. We have made great effort to make sure new releases are  backward combatible.
