Quorum Server Redundancy Question

Hi All,
I'm just investigating my options for a new cluster configuration and was trying to find out about multiple quorum servers hosts. All the examples I have come across in the documentation have 1 physical host acting as a quorum server for an n+1 node cluster. I'm ssuming that there will be quorum issues in the event the physical host, hosting the quorum server, is down and the cluster nodes performed a reconfiguration/switch when the quorum server was unavailable.
Is it possible to have 2 physical hosts, with quorum servers defined on each, that can then be confidured in to the cluster. Effectivly pointing at two different quorum servers for votes?

Correct, the QS is only used if the cluster changes state, i.e. nodes leave or join. However, having more than 1 QS for a single cluster does not help. You simply lower your overall availability because there are more failure scenarios where one of these is down, leading to insufficient votes for the remaining cluster node to obtain.
Active monitoring and prompt repair of the QS (or QD) is the right approach.

    Hi All,
If using two or more clusters, can cluster nodes be quorum servers for
    for other clusters?

Yes, if is feasible. There have been discussions internally about the possibility of making an HA quorum server. Personally, I'm not sure of the value of doing this as you need to guard against the possibility of correlated failured that cause everything to fail in a cascading manner.

  • Lync 2013 FE quorum server

    Hi,
    1. how i can check which is the perimary quorum server in the FE pool lync 2013 ?
    2. how i can change the quorum server before restart the FE server ?
    Thanks,

    1. Get-CsPoolFabricState will get you the node order. 2. You can't. Well not that I've been able to work out. The only option is to reset the fabric, which you can do of you run into issues with services not starting as a result of fabric issues.

  • Lost quorum using quorum server

I have a two node cluster with a third node being used as a quorum server. The quorum server is on a different VLAN than the cluster nodes.
If I shut down or reboot node 1, node 2 dies. I can reboot node 2 without any impact on node 1, it works as it's supposed to. In this scenario the nodes seem to be unable to talk to the quorum server so the cluster thinks its lost quorum and it dies. After it is back up the quorum server is corrupt and shown as offline so the only way to restore it is to remove it from the cluster and readd it.
Node 2 never seems to be able to see the quorum server, it always shows it as offline, even when I add it from node 2. Node 3 is not a cluster configured server, it only has the quorum server installed on it to support the cluster of node 1 & 2. Node 3 is on another vlan, therefore there is a router in the path.
Does the quorum server have to be on the same VLAN so that there's no router in the loop?
Does anybody have any ideas on what could be wrong here? Does the quorum server really work or do I have to add a third server to the cluster just to have a stable cluster?
--- Further info, the clqs show command on node 3 shows disabled false, and keys for node 1, but nothing for node 2 and node 2 can't open the qs.
    Thanks,
    Terry

I may have answered my own question by applying patch 127406-04. With this patch applied both cluster nodes are now seeing the quorum server. The patch among other things solves an issue with simultaneous opens failing. I will have to do some failure testing to confirm this.
Update: failure testing complete, this patch solved the issue.

  • SC3.2 Quorum Server in S10 container?

    Hi,
Is it possible to have a single server act as a quorum device for several (test / development) clusters? If it's not supported by the software, perhaps by installing multiple copies of the software within S10 zones?
    TIA. Tom

    Hi Tom,
It is supported and documented in http://docs.sun.com/app/docs/doc/819-5360
you just have to add separate lines in /etc/scqsd/scqsd.conf and differentiate by instance name and port.
You only have to be aware that a single quorum server is s single point of failure and thatt's it.

  • Clq status shows quorum server offline even though the clq service is runni

    Hi,
In a 2 Node + 1 QS sun cluster 3.2 cluster, clq status is showing quorum sever offline even though the clq process is running on the quorum server. to make the quorum server online, i have to either remove and add the quorum server from cluster, or incase if there is a failure on any one of the node's both th nodes will reboot and once both joined to the cluster, I can see clq status showing quorum server online!!!
Why is the quorum server going offline automatically?
Any help would be highly appreciated
    Many thanks in advance
    Ushas Symon

    Hi,
I asssume you mean the scqsd process is running on the QS, right?
A QS is shown as offline, it the monitor could not reach it when it last tried. This is usually due to a networking problem.
If you issue a clq status, the monitor checks again and if it can reach the QS will change its status back to online.
If this does not happen, check your logs, what kind of error message showed up.
Does clqs show on the QS show the correct information?
It is obvious, that if a node dies and the QS has been offline prior to the node death, that the other node will die as well due to lack of quorum, i.e. it has less votes than needed. You seem to have a basic networking problem or something is really wrong with your QS.

  • Quorum Server Bug?

I have a 2 node cluster using a quorum server running on a third server. I turned off one node this morning, and then used svcadm to disable the quorum server on the third server. THis was in an attempt to panic the remaining node for testing purposes.
It's been about 20 minutes now, and the remaining node has not panicked from losing quorum. clq status and scstat -q show essentially the same things, though in diffent formats. There are 2 votes needed, 2 present, and 3 possible. Under the details, the first node has 0 votes present, the up node has 1, and the disabled quorum server has 0.

To add what Tim has described. The improved quorum monitoring feature will detect that you shut down the quorum server, but will not panic the remaining node. Why should it? It knows it is the only node left and can safely continue to run. When the second node failed it had enough votes to reconfigure!

  • Single Server DHCP environment - redundancy question

I have a single 2012 R2 Server, running as Host.  Host has Hyper-V services only.  Single Guest, running Server 2012 R2, as Domain, FS, DHCP, DNS.  Small shop, 20 workstations.  IP served from DHCP to clients.  If server dies, I
have no internet access.  We have a point of sale system, must have credit card access.  I will NOT have a second server for failover/split services (Budget will not allow.  Please take note of that.  We are a SMALL business.  All
of our computers are lease refurbs and more than 4 years old.  Additional hardware is not a solution).
I am going to move dhcp to router.  It is small and cheap and I have a spare configured as a mirror of our production router.  If my cheap but functional router dies, I can replace it in less than 60 seconds.  If my server suffers failure,
I cannot replace it in 60 seconds.
I welcome other suggestions, or configuration changes of my network. We have had several physical infrastructure incidences over the last 18 months that have resulted in server failure, meaning we lack the access to the internet, meaning we cannot sell product,
meaning we do not make money to pay (my) salary.  I understand ZERO down time comes at a cost.  I'm trying to get the best reliability on the funds I have available.
    Thanks

Thank you for not providing a single answer.  WHY does moving DHCP from DC solve nothing?  If server fails, workstations would still have access to internet, which allows my credit card processing, the problem I'm describing.  So, what am
I missing that makes moving DHCP from the DC so bad?
How does a good backup solve my internet connection issue?  I have a good backup system.
No, I cannot work out of the cloud.  Our internet service would be jealous of a 56K dial-up modem.

  • WLC Redundancy Question

    Hi Community,
I have one question regarding the redundancy feature for two WLC 2106. We have installed on a customer site 2 WLC's 2106  and 6 AP's. Primary and Backup WLC works fine. No the customer asks the question if there is a option to copy the guest access wlan user from the primary controller to the backup controller? The lobby user activates a new user on the primary controller and if the primary controller fails, then the user did not get access to the wlan guest network.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks for help.
    Rene

    Hi Jerry,
Mobility - it's used for client so that they can roam without any issue and one tunnle will be stablish between wlc-1 and wlc-2. if wlc-1 goes down the client will be local to the wlc-2 and if the guest user is not present on wlc-2 then it will not be able to access network.
HA for AP - primary, secondary are used to achieve this.
HA for WLC (WLC redundency) - suppose you have two WLCs if one goes down then second will start serving without any issue. For that master wlc will push all the config to second wlc and some other mechanism to achieve this. This functionality is not yet support.

  • Server Rebuild Questions

    Hello,
I'll start by admitting I'm from a mainly Windows Server background and am slowly learning Mac OSX Server.
We have two Mac Mini servers, a primary and a backup, due to a unrelated issue we need to rebuild the server. So I'm planning to rebuild the backup as the main server. I have a few questions, any help or advice would be really appreciated.
    1) I can start the mac mini in recovery mode, erase the disk, then select reinstalll Mac OSX. I assume as long as there's an internet connection it should then download the OS?
    2) Once the OS install is complete and the server is up to date, I need to get server.app running and configure open directory. I assume "OSX Server" won't be installed automatically? can it just be downloaded from the app store? https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/os-x-server/id883878097 what concerns me is I can't see "Open Directory" in the screenshots which is essential.
    3) Assuming I get the OS reinstalled, server.app installed, open directory running. There's a Promise Pegasus disk array attached to the current server. This will need to be unmounted, then re-mounted on the new server. Is this as simple as plug and play? The current server has a "Promise utility" but this looks like its mainly for monitoring the array. Does this need to be installed to access the drive?
    Thanks in advance!

I will give some insight into the Pegasus.
    3) Assuming I get the OS reinstalled, server.app installed, open directory running. There's a Promise Pegasus disk array attached to the current server. The Pegasus can simply be plugged in.  It is storage and will mount on any system you connect it to.  The Promise Utility "should" be installed because it will let you monitor the array and also apply updates.  In the long run this is important.  It will consume port 8080 to run.  So if you are using other services like Extensis UTS server, you will likely need to change the port for the Promise Utility.  This is available in the preferences pane of the tool.
The next issue you may run into is ownership of the files.  You have an old server.  This server has users and UID/GUID values associated with the accounts.  If you are rebuilding your users from scratch, you will not be matching the UID values any longer.  So while the old server and the new server may both have a user named Bob, their UID/GUID values may not match.  Moving the disk from one machine to the other will require you to reset permission on the data.  Now if you are doing an OD export and then an import, you will have maintain all the UID/GUID values.
And finally, the sleep issue.  Everyone wants to be green.  But if this is a server, the last thing you want is the Pegasus to put the drives to sleep.  By default, the units will spin the disks down.  This can make for some angry users when their client systems beach ball for a while as the disks are spinning back up.  To disable the power saving features, you need to install the Promise Utility and then use the command line tool.
Open Terminal.  Type promiseutil into the Terminal window and press the Return key.  You will be entered into the cliib> prompt.
At the prompt, type this command:
         ctrl -a mod -s "powersavinglevel=0"
To verify the change, type the following command:
         ctrl -v
You should see PowerSavingLevel: 0 listed in the output.
Type the exit command to exit promiseutil.
Make sure you have a backup plan.  RAID is redundancy.  It is not backup.  Then test it.  Trust but verify.

  • Office Web Apps server security question

    Hello,
According to this technet article Microsoft appears to recommend against allowing both external and internal users access to your OWA server.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219435(v=office.15).aspx#viewers
"Files that are intended to be viewed through a web browser by using Online Viewers must not require authentication. In other words, the files must be available publicly because Online Viewers can’t perform authentication when it is retrieving files.
We strongly recommend that the Office Web Apps Server farm that you use for Online Viewers is only able to access either the intranet or the Internet, but not both. This is because Office Web Apps Server doesn’t differentiate between requests for intranet
and Internet URLs. Somebody on the Internet could request an intranet URL, for example, causing a security leak if an internal document is viewed."
Just trying to make sense of this.  I am building a new Lync 2013 environment and I definitely want my internal users to be able to leverage the OWA server.  So does that mean I should not publish that server to the internet?  And if I do
not, does that mean my users will not be able to share a powerpoint presentation at all to external users?  If this is all true and I'm understanding this correctly, does this mean that most implementations choose one or the other? Or does Lync not
use these "Online Viewers" so I can just disable them and users will still be able to share powerpoint presentations with external users?
Thanks for any help you can provide for this confusion.

No, you should publish to both internal and Internet on the same server, it's just how it's done with Lync.  You can't really have two with Lync for this purpose anyway.  Users will upload PowerPoint presentations to it when it's time to share,
no editing is possible, and the risk is generally minimal.  You can shorten the cache time to help if you're concerned.
    Regardless, from the article:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj219442(v=office.15).aspx setting OpenFromUrlEnabled "Turns on or off the ability to use Online Viewers to view Officefiles from a URL or UNC path.".  This is set to false and turned off by default.

  • Mail server setup question on mini server

I want use Mac Mini Server as my emailserver,  I have some question here.
Is 500G hard-disk enough for storedata? After two or three years, incase 500G already not enough for store all email data, Could I have any solution for this issue? My company has around 100 email user.
Is Mac mini server can do 7*24job?

Is 500G hard-disk enough for storedata?
How long is a piece of string?
Seriously. Who can answer that question? no one here can. It depends on way more factors than you've given us. The use of IMAP (where messages are stored on the server) vs. POP (where they're downloaded to the client) will also make a difference, as will retention policies (do you require keeping all email correspondence for 5 years? or do you not care if users delete mail immediately?)
A good starting point, though would be to look at the average size of a user's mailbox now and extrapolate.
For example, I think I'm a fairly heavy email user and my ~/Library/Mail directory is 5.4GB. If everyone in your company is like me then you'd need 5.4GB x 100 users, or 540GB to store all their mail.
Most users aren't like me, though, but you'll have to determine that yourself.
After two or three years, incase 500G already not enough for store all email data, Could I have any solution for this issue?
Sure. You can add additional storage (e.g. via FireWire or some external mechanism) and migrate mailboxes there. You can even selectively store different user's mailboxes on different volumes. It's all possible.
Is Mac mini server can do 7*24job?
Sure. Many people are using the Mini 24/7. I wouldn't say it's ideal for critical systems but using mirrored disk will insulate you from the biggest problem. If this is going to be the main mail system for your company though, you need to consider other elements such as backup and failover (what to do when/if this machine crashes/explodes/is otherwise unavailable).

  • Bpel server redundancy

    Hi!
in our product environment now we have 1 bpel pm server 10.1.2 and we'd like to have one more redundant server for this instance, which should work in case of crash of the first server ...
Could you point me to the right documentation about this problem? thanks a lot,
    Tomas

Looks like the server is unable to connect to the dehydration database.
A standard installation would have this data source setup as part of the installation.
    "jdbc/BPELServerDataSourceWorkflow"
This again uses the connection pool "BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL"
And the name of the data source is "BPELServerDataSourceWorkflow"
There are a few checks that you can perform.
    1. Check if the dehydration database is up.
If no then this should be up and running.
    2. Go to the EM and use {test connection} for "BPELPM_CONNECTION_POOL"
If comes back with error then check if the dehydration database credentials has changed post installation.
There are a few other datasources that share the same connection pool. Check if these are working too.
