Any quota for mails in Mail?
Is there any quota for the number of sending mails in Mail?
Quotas, if applicable, are set by the service provider, not the application. iCloud, for example, has clearly stated limits:
iCloud: Mailbox size and message sending limits - Apple Support
You would have to ask any other mail services you use whether they impose quotas. -
A person at my work is having problems with mail only quoting part of a message when they reply. Sometimes the quote is only a word. They don't have anything selected when they click reply. Why would Mail be truncating their reply?
Hi Ian
Thanks, I was hoping that I just hadn't found the preference setting... oh well. I do have a substantial number of emails in my inbox but I wish there was an option to turn this feature off, or at the very least be able to index/cache the emails so that it runs faster. Spotlight works in a similar way but doesn't pause the typing of the rest of the find request.

In Lion quotation marks and apostrophes were automatically changed to smart quotes/apostrophes. In Mountain Lion they are all regular smart quotes/apostrophes and it drives me nuts. Anyone know why they are no longer automatically smart quotes? (I know that I can use option+], etc to manually insert smart quotes, but that's a pain. I've also made sure in System Preferences --> Language and Text -->
You're awesome! And quick! Really easy fix, but I had no idea the option was there. Thanks a lot.

1) Where can I find the amount of free space remaining or the amount of space used of my mail account. My internet provider said it's at the bottom of my in-box, but I see nothing !
2) Can a person see how many MB''s are used for each mail sent, received, etc. ?
3) Can I retrieve a " trashed " message somewhere, that I deleted from trash a few days ago ?
Mail 1.3.11 Thanks !

iMac G5 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Eric,
What type of account are you using -- POP, IMAP or .mac? The answers to some of your questions will depend upon that.
To see sizes of messages you have sent (when viewed in the Sent mailbox), or that you receive, click on View in the Menubar, and choose Columns, and further select to display Size.
More info, please.

Smart quotes interrupting typing?
Hi—
Since upgrading to Yosemite (10.10) I've noticed that (especially in Mail [8.0 (1990.1)], though it's possible it's happening elsewhere in the OS) whenever I'm typing quickly and include an apostrophe, the cursor jumps back when I type the next space or punctuation mark, creating undesirable results. Whenever I type the contraction for "will" (e.g. I'll, you'll, she'll, we'll), the cursor jumps back to between the two L's, so the second L trails whatever I'm typing until I realize it and fix it:
You’lfind this very annoying.l
I’lsee if I can figure out what went wrong.l
She’loffer a suggestion.l
We’lfix this eventually.l
A few more examples show that the cursor seems to jump back to the character after the "smartened" apostrophe, even if there are several characters between the apostrophe and the space (as in "S'wonderful"):
I’mtyping quickly.
There’snow a trailing space on this line.
S’wto know that this happens every time.onderful
And just for the sake of troubleshooting:
I wondered, “Does this happen with double quotes too?"
No, it doesn't seem to.
Has anyone else noticed this? Other than turning off smart quotes in Mail (which probably wouldn't be a bad idea, now that I think about it), is there a way to keep this from happening?
Thanks,
DavidNo, you're doing it right. Try the exact same procedure in TextEdit, which also relies on OS X's text substitutions mechanism for this, and you'll find it works exactly as you expect. This is a lingering bug in Pages 5.

Help with setting up Mail on 2 Macs?
I'm switching from Mailsmith to Apple Mail. I have exported all my Mailsmith mailboxes and successfully imported them into Mail on the desktop Mac, then recreated each in the On My Mac section and dragged all the pertinent messages from the imported boxes to the newly created ones.
This is my first experience with IMAP and Mail and while I like the fact of being able to access all my incoming mail on both Macs - the G4MDD and the MBP - they run different versions of Mail as the G4 has Leopard 10.5.8 installed while the MBP runs Snow Leopard 10.6.8 with its later version of the Mail app.
What I would like to do is have the same mailboxes on both Macs. Is there any way of exporting or moving the database of the On My Mac mailboxes from Mail on the G4MDD to Mail on the MBP?
I'm not sure how this is supposed to work, but I imagine one keeps the active online version's Inbox etc. fairly lean and archives messages to the appropriate mailboxes in the On My Mac section, but unless one does it on both Macs, one no longer would have access to the archived messages on the other machine. Or does one create all the mailboxes in the online/upper portion of Mail so they will all be online and thus always available to all Macs? But if something happens (server messups do happen, even to Apple) one would then risk losing all past history, since the reference Mail is the online version and not the local ones.
Colour me confused. Newbie to Mail so I would appreciate any advice.
ThanksWorries
Ok, I've read another article where it says, similarly to the Help bit you quoted:
"In Mail, you can simply drag one or more mail-boxes from your mailbox list onto the icon representing your IMAP server. Mail copies the mailboxes (even nested ones) and their contents to the server, creating new mailboxes as needed."
I can't find any icon representing my IMAP server in the Mail window. Nor do I see any IMAP accounts in that window. I see Inboxes for my various accounts (as well as Sent and Trash) but nothing as described in the above quote. Dragging or Option dragging a Mailbox I had created from the On My Mac section to the upper one dosn't work. Sigh. What am I missing? -

You should talk to your ISP to get the details for connecting to your server.
In this case I suspect your server wants you to make the connection on the
secure port. The FAQ has examples of how to do this for GMail and Yahoo
mail, which work similarly. By changing the host name, these same examples
will likely work for you. -
When composing an email in Mac Mail I've noticed a small but very irritating bug: pressing the spacebar after typing an apostrophe in a word, e.g. "we're", the cursor moves to the left i.e. backwards, and not to the right, effectively deleting a space and not creating one.
Any ideas?I just recreated this problem on my iMac (wired KB, no wireless KB) by changing Mail > Preferences > Composing > Spellcheck from "as I type" to "never". Then type a contraction ending in 're and the space bar causes the cursor to jump back as others have stated, to the spot 'r|e
Next, I went into System Preferences > Keyboard > Text, and turned off "use smart quotes" and the problem went away again.
From this point (smart quotes off, spell checking never), if I turn Smart Quotes ON, the problem returns.
The problem is dependent on the state of both settings.
The spacebar in Mail "works" if I have either of the following setting combinations:
Keyboard: smart quotes OFF, Mail: check spelling ANY SETTING
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: check spelling AS I TYPE
Other combinations FAIL
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check spelling NEVER
Keyboard: smart quotes ON, Mail: Check Spelling WHEN I CLICK SEND
Looks to me like there's a bug in Mail > Preferences > Check spelling > NEVER and WHEN I CLICK SEND that interacts badly with Keyboard > Smart quotes ON.
Thanks.

Mail trash count does not synch
I'm running the eprint app on an iPad. My Deleted Messages folder does not synchronize as my other mail folders do - the count of items is stale. The count of items is 25000, which it was the day I set this up a week or so ago. My current Deleted Items folder contains 5000 items.
Any suggestions?
Thanks,
DanYou quote your Mail as being 4.5. On Snow Leopard 10.6.8 you should be using Mail 4.6. (1085) Why is this?

IPhone strange reset when in e-mail client
Since the update for the iPhone 2 weeks ago, the iPhone has a strage reset when I am deleting or sending e-mail. The screen goes black, and within 10 seconds or so it goes to Home. When I go back into mail, all the e-mails I deleted reappear, while e-mails I was in the process of composing or sending have to be re-typed.
Additionally, there seems to be a bit more lag on various applications. Any ideas?Mr. Hughes,
Here is a quote from Mail Help under Fonts:
"Helvetica Fractions font may cause text to display improperly in Address Book, iChat, Safari, Mail
If you have the Helvetica Fractions font installed, text in some applications (including Address Book, iChat, Safari and Mail) may appear as overlapping numbers and symbols.
To avoid this issue in Mac OS X 10.3 and later, use Font Book to turn off the Helvetica Fractions font.
If you're using Mac OS X 10.2.8 or earlier, check these two font locations for the Helvetica Fractions font:
• /Library/Fonts/
• ~/Library/Fonts/ (the tilde represents your Home folder)
If you find a Helvetica Fractions font (or fonts), which may appear as "HelveFra" or "HelveFraBold," remove it from the folders. (To avoid other issues, do not disable the Helvetica font.)

Quoting copies background pattern
In Mail, someone sent me an email with one of those background patterns in the message. You know the kind: some people think it’s cute to have a background pattern in all their email messages. Anyway, when I quoted them, Mail copied the background pattern along with the quoted text, something that doesn't quite make sense! The quoted text was real text, not a graphic or image. When I clicked the pattern behind the quoted text, a border appeared around it with an “X” button in the corner. When I clicked the “X” button, Mail deleted not just the pattern, but also the quoted text! This is dumb. Obviously I just want to delete the pattern, not the text. How do I keep Mail from copying the background when I quote someone???
yes thats what I'm talking about, the edges!
I know that probably the best way how to do it would be to
use CSS but I've never used it before so don't know how ...is there
any chance you would link me to an example or so?
The problem is actually the content inside the flash as well.
Like positioning to the center, in case you change the browser
window. If I try the Stage.onResize, it gives an error saying there
is no such property.
The 100% example of I'm trying to achieve is when you publish
anything with Flash size property set to 100%, just WITHOUT the
mentioned edges.
See the example:
http://blog.deconcept.com/swfobject/fullpage.html
There is also a tutorial for it but I have no clue how will
I link the HTML file and the CSS file..

Open Mail app and go to prefs and delete the MM mail account, then quit mail.
Delete everything in username/Library/Mail (if you have other Mail accounts you will want to make sure you save the data from them as this will wipe any POP3 etc accounts also)
Restart Mail and add the MM mail account back as a new Mail account with default setting for MM. This should rebuild everything and make Mail app mirror the server.

Full text search in IMAP accounts
I use IMAP with apple mail.
Whenever I try to do a full text search using the spotlight in mail it doesn't find messages most of the time.
I guess that it only finds the messages, which have been viewed previously. It should look at the messages on the server but not necessarily downloaded.
Can somebody shed some light on this on how this is supposed to work.
I have the option to keep messages for offline viewing set for only messages read.
THXManilx, what you're saying doesn't make sense.
I hope I'll myself clear:
It is only available when I select a folder within
a mailbox.
What folders are you talking about? Could it be that
you're calling "mailbox" the (@) icon that
groups the custom mailboxes stored remotely at the
IMAP server?
I have 2 imap accounts defined in mail. Each one has several folders (on the imap server) underneath it. When I select the account (world icon) the option is greyed out. When I select one of the imap folders I can run it.
It clears all messages, runs a while then the messages reappear BUT when I select them this is when they are fetched from the server.
UNLESS mail is still fetching them behind scenes... But there is no indication of this (no counter or whatever to see what it is doing).
This is what Rebuild does (quoted from Mail Help):
For IMAP accounts, locally cached
messages are discarded and the messages are
downloaded again from the server to your hard disk.
Your mailbox appears empty until the download is
complete.
I don't thin k this is what I'm seeing.....
Thx for your suggestions! -
