QX9300/q9100 upgrade?

guys....yet another upgrade question...
ive got a dv6-1007tx
Core 2 Duo P8600 2.4 GHz
PM45 motherboard
so i went to the hp website to check compatible processors and narrowed down my options to....
QX9300...
Q9100...
I really need to go quad cause i use video editing/converting programs and with my current processor my cpu is always maxed out at 100%...
im leaning to the Q9100 at the moment...its about half the price ($280 on ebay) of the QX9300 ($520 on ebay)...
does anyone know if there is a significant difference between them, besides the .26GHz?  i have been hearing that some processors are over-clockable and some arent...but as yet i have no real idea about over-clocking...i will have to look into it...
can anyone tell me what the negative aspects are of performing the upgrade that i am suggesting?
will overheating be a problem?
life span?
anything else like that?
any help/advice would be much appreciated...
regards,
               kam

You cannot overclock a laptop. The BIOS are locked down so there is no way to adjust ratios, etc.
Here is the Manual:
Manual
The fastest processor offered on the dv6t-1000 series is the T9900 at 3.06 Ghz...not a Quad Core. For what you are doing (video), extra cpu cores will not be as useful as raw clock speed. Depending on what software you use, it may or may not even be optimized for 4 processor cores in any event. The T9900 is a beast. If you must upgrade (advise against it) install a processor that HP actually offered on the same machine. Otherwise even though you think the chipset and such should be compatible, HP's BIOS will break your heart.
Here is a T9900 from an HP laptop being offered on ebay for $200:
ebay
shelf price from mainline suppliers is about $400.

  • X305-Q705 - GPU and CPU upgrades possible?

    Question 1:
I know that on some models have 2 GPUs.
How can I upgrade the 9700M GTS and can I use crossfire or SLI?
    Question 2:
What is the CPU I can buy for my laptop?
    Many thanks,
    Zyon

Raver. What makes you think SLI is restricted to desktops only? There are plenty of notebooks out there with dual GPUs in SLI configuration including higher spec versions of this one. The x305-q706 has dual 9700m GTS's in SLI
This notebook will support most dual and quad Penryn processors upto QX9300. but upgrading will be trouble because the motherboard has to be removed first because there is no easy access to the CPU from underneath the notebook.
But ravers right with not needing to upgrade, It has plenty of power at the moment.

and I would like to upgrade my processor of my MBP.
so I have 5 CPUs, which one it will working with, and tell your recommendation
    1- Intel Core 2 Extreme Processor QX9300 [http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=36727]

    5- Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9900 [http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?id=39312]
I hope who have an experience and knowledge with a mac please tell what best one I choose.
    thank you...

The CPU is soldered to the logic board.  As Retired Engineer indicated, there are no sockets.  As such, you would need to unsolder more than 450 pins simultaneously in order to remove the processor... as well as be able to re-solder all those pins.  Basically, it's impossible.

  • HP Pavillion Dv7 1279wm cpu upgrade to Intel Core2 Extreme QX9300 Technical Question.

I made a royal error and posted this in the wrong topic first I apologize:
So... I've kept great care of my laptop and it still boots fine (im obsessive about keeping it in tip top shape) but lately its age is becoming apparent and I'm not scared to take my machine apart so... my dv 1279wm is out of warranty and cant get help (for free that is) from HP customer support regarding this issue:
I want to upgrade my cpu from its default Core 2 Duo (see signature for specs) to an Intel Core2 Extreme Quad QX9300 model.
Now i already did some homework on this matter the QX9300 is a socket P CPU and the stock CPU is also Socket P. The Chipset that came stock with my motherboard on my machine is PM45 and the QX9300 is (supposedly) compatible but i've read on other forums regarding the PM45 is that it was revised (or something like that) and that the newer PM45 chipsets can run old and new but the older PM45 chipsets cant run new (specifically Core2 Quad and Core2 Extreme Models). I want to know if the PM45 that came stock in my laptop is compatible with this CPU or Not (is my PM45 new or old)? Also I'm aware that HP locks their BIOS, I'm wondering if that'll be a problem in recognizing a new CPU (perhaps some kind of preventative measure when trying to do an upgrade for example the BIOS reads core2 quad 9100=Dont run)Thanks for reading
P.S. I'm not to worried about heating issues in fact with 4 cores the workload should be lighter per core keeping total heat lower but that's just my rationalization. Regardless, i've heard plenty of people say "why not just buy a new computer?" a seeming suggestion that upgrading the CPU is just silly or useless ( your opinion is your entitlement) but I dont think it is useless or silly (just a guy here trying to breathe new life into his first computer)

did some final snooping around intel's website and discovered the components of the intel PM45 chipset that make the qx9300 compatible
    Intel® Core™2 Extreme Processor QX9300 (12M Cache, 2.53 GHz, 1066 MHz FSB) (Configurations: 2)

so it works with the revised chipset (82801IEM I/O controller:ICH9EM) and the old (82801IBM I/O controller:ICH9M) as well
but of course the other worry is Locked BIOS and I am NOT comfortable flashing my bios perhaps i'll find an altarnative

  • CPU Upgrade DV7 1020us - QX9300

Hi there! I am planning to upgrade my DV7-1020us, changing his Intel Core 2 Duo P7350 to another with virtualization technology. I was wondering if the Intel Core 2 Duo Extreme QX9300 would work in this notebook, would it?If not, which one is the best compatible choice? P.S: I think the QX9300 would be compatible, since the Intel PM45 ChipSet has it on its compatible product listing here (http://ark.intel.com/products/35135/Intel-82PM45-Memory-Controller-Hub#@compatibility), but I have read around that HP can limit somehow the use of new CPU on their notebooks.I already updated my BIOS to the latest version (F.2D Rev.) on HP drivers. Thanks!

Thanks for replying PeerOne. So, the processor arrived about two days ago, and everything seens fine with it. I made the upgrade AND.... dramatic pause..... It didn`t worked. The notebook does not even show the display. It starts normally but suddenly the fan stops, nothing on the screen, and the caps look and num look LEDs starts to blink, indicating some random error codes. Sometimes It blinks the "memory not functional" code, but also blinks the graphical module issue. Only one or two times it blinked the CPU issue. I really did a deep research about BIOS and the CPUs microcodes that should be in it for it to support a new processors. After that research I concluded that my BIOS has the microcodes of the QX9300, and I was pretty confident then. Also tried to change the memory to a faster one, mine are the original ones (2x Samsung PC2- 6400 400MHz- 2GB) but It didn`t worked either. I really don`t know what should happen when you insert a incompatible processor. Should the screen be blank and the LEDs blink? Or should It at least show the BIOS screen and display some specific message?I need to answer this questions to conclude, is the processor really incompatible, or is it broken? Thanks. P.S.: I`ll keep this post updated if I discover something new. (Link about Insyde BIOS and microcodes - http://donovan6000.blogspot.com.br/2013/06/insyde-bios-modding-cpu-microcodes.html)

  • Upgrade from P8400 to Q9100

    Hi all,
I have a Pavilion DV7-1130el notebook (PGA478 as socket), with a P8400 as CPU, and I found a person who would sell me the Q9100.
I know that the TPD is different (25W vs 45W) and I'm already looking for a cooling pad. Anyway, my question is: is the Q9100 compatible with my BIOS? The bios' version is F.2D (really, it's a modded version, but I can always install the original one). Would it be able to boot up?
Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english,
    Michele

Ok, thank you very much for the answer.
I searched a cpu wich 2.8GHz and I also found the P9700, which has a TDP of 28W (the T9600 has a TDP of 35W). Would it be possible to install this cpu?
    I also think I can't install the T9900 (Core2Duo 3 Ghz)... I'm right?
P.s.: just only one question, which isn't directly connected to the cpu replacement: my notebook has the 56k modem's port locked and I would like to add the modem module to my notebook. Is it possible?
    Thank you,
    Michele

  • Dv7-2270US CPU UPGRADE

Hello, i own this laptop and im thinking of upgrading the cpu. From HP manual i found that the max proccessor i can install is q9100. But from intel's chipset webpage i found that for my laptops chipset maximum proccessor is QX9300 and also q9200. Both of them are quite much stronger than q9000 and especially qx9300 very close to last generation i7 for laptops. I cannot afford buying a new laptop so thats why i want to upgrade. My current rig is Q9000, 8GB ram, 256GB SSD , and 1TB HDD
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

Not only is it possible that the QX9300 won't work, it is likely that it won't work. While the chipset may support the CPU, if the supporting electronics and BIOS haven't been engineered to handle the QX9300, it isn't going to happen. Sorry, but there are no overclocking options in the BIOS and overclocking isn't supported by HP laptops.

  • W500 and QX9300

    Hi,
Ive bought a QX9300 and installed in into my W500, the notebook wont start after the upgrade. I think the problem is the bios support, is there a way to get this running or could I flash the bios of W700 into my W500 to get this thing running!? I dont know why the W500 doesnt supprt the QX9300?

If you think of this thread
    http://www.thinkpad-forum.de/thinkpad-hardware/w-serie/69365-qx9300-im-w500/
its mine and the guy king0r told he did the update with no problem only a issue of heating...
I think he was faking, because the tdp of the qx9300 is the same as the one from x9100 (take a look at the posted links from intel) and Ive seen serverals x9100 running in the w500 without any cooling problems!!!
Ive read an other thread a guy was installing a q9100 into a w500 and had the same issue as me, the laptop wont start, therefor I think king0r was faking.
Would the bios of w700 run on my w500 or brick it?

  • Possibility of upgrading the Processor on P500-ST5801?

Would anyone know if its possible for me to upgrade the processor from its default (P7350- 2.0 Ghz) to something higher?
...I would move up to the highest processor available for this motherboard, if its possible, via an authorized service center near me.
    Thanks

Your best source of information like that is the NoteBook Review Forums.  They do a lot of that over there and have some very knowledgeable people that can provide you with the best information possible about it.
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/forumdisplay.php?f=27
Do your homework first though.  Download and run CPU-Z so you will be able to tell them specifically what CPU is in that system as well as what motherboard chipset it has.  That will tell them a million times more information than telling them what model of laptop it is.
     http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php
From their Intel Upgrade Guide it looks like you should have several poosibilities.  The tricky part is which ones the bios will support and Toshiba isn't very forthcoming about that.  Make sure that you have the latest bios when you attempt any of these.
Go to the Product Support Link at the top of this page, enter in your model, then clik on the Download Tab to find the available bios files for that model.  DO NOT update the bios from within Windows.  Don't do it, don't even think about doing it if you want to use your computer again.  When you double click on the download you will be presented with the choice of creating a CD to flash the bios from.  USE THIS METHOD.  You can use a CD-RW so you don't waste a blank, but even the cost of a regular blank CD is cheap compared to the $100 that most places will charge you to fix a botched bios flash.  Make sure that your battery is fully charged, installed, and the AC Adapter is plugged in just in case.

  • G530 Motherboard/CPU Upgrades?

    Hi all,
My girlfriend has a G530 that I just had to pull apart after it took a little bit of a swim. Aside from needing a keyboard nothing was damaged, but I noticed something interesting while I had it apart: Next to the northbridge there are what appear to be solder pads for a discrete GPU and RAM for it. Thing is, I can't seem to find a single system that has a board with the same layout as the G530's that has a discrete GPU on it. Does anyone know if any other systems got this board with a GPU on it? If I can find a board with one I'd be tempted to throw it in the G530 just to say that I did.
Also, has anyone tried throwing something like a T9300 or T8300 in one of these things? The T4200 + Intel IGP + painfully slow hard drive conspire to give me an eye twitch whenever I get stuck using the darn thing and I'd kinda like to liven it up a bit.
    Thanks.

    Hi
IMHO dual processor upgrades have advantages and disadvantages.
On the one hand OS X does make good use of dual processors and most apps these days seem to be multithreaded to some degree. I guess this will only improve in the future as more machines are released with dual processors and/or dual cores and more software is produced to take advantage of them. I guess the main exception is games, some of which only make use of one processor, but then if you're running more than one app at a time, you'll still be using both processors to some degree.
On the other hand, dual processor upgrades are more expensive, both processors share the same relatively slow 133MHz system bus and in general are 'only' 40% faster than a single processor running at the same speed, they generate more heat and most 7447 based upgrades are overclocked, so two overclocked processors are perhaps going to be more problematical.
I agree with PB PM in that a single 1.4GHz 7455 based upgrade (with level 3 cache) would give you the most bang for the buck. IMHO the 466MHz Digital Audio G4 is the computer likely to gain the most from a processor upgrade, as it was the slowest G4 produced to still have a 133MHz bus and x4 AGP slot etc.

  • Lenovo G550 processor upgrade

I am upgrading a Lenovo G550 that I purchased a few years ago for my wife. So far I was able to install 8GB or RAM and a 500GB HDD with no issues. However when I tried to upgrade the processor, the laptop would not power up. It will turn on and the lights will indicate that the HDD is on and the battery is on, but I do not get the Lenovo splash screen. I hear my fan going but nothing happens. Only a black screen. I purchased an Intel Core 2 Duo processor P7550 (2.26GHz, 1066MHz FSB, 3MB L2 Cache) based on the speciation sheet below. I was wondering if anyone might know where I could find any documentation that specifically lists what CPUs are compatible with the Lenovo G550. Ideally I'd like to install the best processor it will take. Thank you.

I haven't seen a G550 with a Intel Core 2 Extreme Mobile QX9300 CPU but if you bought it working from a G550 laptop or it has a lenovo FRU on it then it may work (it'll also good if you can return the item just in case it doesn't work).
In addition, take note that the QX9300 has a max TDP of 45W, whereas the CPU's listed in this pdt datasheet are only 35W so the motherboard might not take the heat if the QX9300 reaches it's peak usage.
Also, I've looked into some additional details and these are the CPU's that are tested to work with the G550.

    Goodluck!

  • HELP ME WITH HDX18 CPU UPGRADE GONE WRONG

I am not a regular member of this forum and logged on today because I really need help
Here is the story. I wanted to upgrade my old HP HDX18 to the Q9100 processor which is the highest one listed in the service manual. I studied the manual intently and made sure this was an ok upgrade.
I disassembled the notebook exactly as it was done in the manual down to the motherboard. I installed the Q9100 and then reassembled exactly as it was in the manual. I found with the hard drive connected, a Crucial M4 SSD-solid state drive, the computer came on for about 10 seconds getting to the windows logo and then shut down. However, with the drive disconnected I found that I could access the bios and the computer would not shut down.
I decided to reinstall the old processor and the exact same thing happened. I ran diagnostic tests while in the bios screen with the drive connected and it appeared all was ok. When the drive was reconnected I got this error screen.
I did use Phobya HeGrease. The Q9100 processor was a used processor off of ebay. I looked on the Intel website and it is unlikely this is an engineering sample.
I searched the internet and found that some others have had this exact same problem and they corrected by reseating the CPU. I looked at the CPU again and found that this seems fairly simple. It seems like its in their securely. Its just a drop in and screw. When its locked, I cant seem to get it out with my hands.
I read some articles about how too much Thermal paste might cause this to happen and I probably had on a bit too much.
So please help me out with any ideas. Right now my HDX18 is in a pile on the floor.
    Thanks for your help!
Here is a video of exactly what is happening and you can see an error code in the diagnostic log which comes up towards the end of the video.

    Hi,
The good thing is that the cpu is probably not the issue. I have noticed that a memory test failed so it could be magnetized during the disassembly/assembly. If you remove the ssd and are able to access the BIOS, it might suggest that the problem is the ssd. Make also sure that the memory is compatible with the cpu as better cpus support faster memory.

  • CPU and motherboard upgrades for DV7-2278ca

    Hi
I have a DV-2278ca laptop with Intel Core™2 Quad Q9100 2.26-GHz with 12-MB L2 cache and 1066-MHz FSB and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 discrete graphics subsystem and 1-GB of dedicated memory.
I want to upgrade them to something that uses second/third generation INTEL (I5/I7)
Is it possible? if yes what are my options?
    Thanks!

I am going to be honest here. The chances of upgrading those components is very low and not very likely to work with that notebook case.
A second generation Core i5/i7 process is two generations away from the current processor which will require a motherboard upgrade. I'm certain you are aware of this since you mention upgrading the CPU and the motherboard. This is an issue since the case for the notebook was specifically matched to the motherboard it came with. It is possible that finding one that supports what you want and fits that case will be challenging. It can also add up in cost and risk. Risk being the components just don't work or a different feature of the notebook doesn't work any more.
I did do some research to find other posts, in this forum and outside this forum, where others have successfully changed those components. I found plenty on replacing it with the same motherboard, but none that were specifically upgrading it. Perhaps I did not use the right search terms. Notebooks are generally intended to be as they are configured with limited upgrades available for the hard drive and RAM.
