Hi forum,
is it OK a system copy (due new hw) for a R/3 4.6C system from Solaris9/Oracle9.2 to Solaris10/Oracle9.2 ?
Porblems ?
Standard system copye procedure ?

    Hi,
We have built our application on Sunsolaris Intel(X86) .But one of my client has Sun Fire v240 (but Sunfire uses Ultra SPARC processors)
is there any problem (related to JRE problem)for running that application on Sunfire

If its a java program it should work on both platforms, as long as the java version is the same (or later) as the one you used to build your application.
    .7/M.

Here is the list of changes and bugs I found in AR8.1.1 and ways to fix them (bugs of course :-) ):
(this is how I fixed these bugs, you may find better ways to fix them)
The most important fix since AR 7.0.9 is that now AR8 works with new Linux
distributions which use recent GTK 2.0 libraries. It is known fact that when
recent GTK 2.0 library was present loading of AR 7.0.9 failed with endless
loop of messages: "expr: syntax error" on console window and serious CPU
usage hit silently slowing down computer reactions. Now this is fixed.
New feature added: Now AR8 scans font pathes inside X config files and adds
found fonts to its own internal font cache so system wide fonts are used for
pdf pages rendering in addition to default built-in AR8 package fonts. If
user will copy font files from Windows/fonts directory to X font locations
the pdf files outlook in AR8 is identical to the one on Windows.
When someone uses tar.bz2 or tar.gz installer it will ask for installation
directory and will show default [ /opt] directory. Do not press enter here!
If you do this a ?[3~ junk directory will be created in current directory. To
overcome this manually type /opt or other location.
Another bug is blank grey window on first run of AR8. Just close it with X and
provide path to libgtkembedmoz folder. This library is a part of mozilla web
browser so it can be found in any mozilla program directory:
    /usr/lib/firefox
    /usr/lib/seamonkey
    /usr/lib/thunderbird
    /usr/lib/mozilla
or other locations where mozilla software is installed.
Just run AR8, go to Edit->Preferences->Categories->Internet->Select Browser,
and fill in libgtkembedmoz Folder path with one of these locations or find
    correct one for your system.
The last bug is AR8 only creates desktop icons on root account.
AR8 can be run without icon. Just run /usr/bin/acroread

OpenSSL 0.9.7, OpenLDAP, and CUPS libraries: These libraries can be obtained from the Package CDs obtained from Sun with the operating system CDs or from
http://sun.com/software/solaris/freeware. Remember to set the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to include the path where these libraries are installed.
libstdc++ library: Adobe Reader requires the libstdc++.so.5 library. Some systems might not have it installed by default. To fix this, you need to install the compat-libstdc++ package.
If that lib is not in this selection of stuff needed to run acroread. Try downloading pango from sunfreeware.
    Good luck!!

  • TransferHandler under the JDK 1.5

There is a problem with TransferHandler in applet under the JDK 1.5.
For example, try to execute an applet with the code from the classic sample of Tutorial http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/misc/dnd.html#cut. Any actions do not work through the menu items :-( Maybe are anyone who faced with this?

These are obviously excellent reasons not to use stack smashing protection in the official Sun binaries.
However, if one does not care for speed, there might be a small chance that it could be sane to compile the jvm on ones own with a stack smashing protection enabled compiler.
concerning 4): The fact that Java prevents buffer overflows was one of the main reasons to use Java for this application. But I am also concerned about the very minuscule chance that the JVM itself might be attacked by a buffer overflow exploit. The Java application makes use of sockets to establish a data connection. Maybe there might be a bug in the jvm, which enables malicious TCP packets to crash the jvm and exploit a buffer overflow.
Do I understand it correctly, that Sun does neither offers 1.5.0_00 -> 1.5.0_04 patches, nor the 1.5.0_04 source code, but only the 1.5.0_00 source code? Is this a concious decision (i.e. a Sun policy)?
I could perfectly understand such a decision, because it could be a measure in order to force Java users to use the Java/Solaris/UltraSparc combination for cases where reliability/security really is mission critical, which would obviously be a sane business decision by Sun.
But I only would like to make sure that I do understand the facts correctly: The source code is really only intended to be used for research purposes as it is not patched?

  • Veritas Volume Manager errors

I am running a Solaris Ultrasparc Enterprise 450 Server with Solaris 8 operating system. This past weekend, I received the following errors relating to Volumen Management on our disks.
I need help in understanding what happened and how to fix it. The only thing I found was that 2-3 filesystems were over 90% and I was able to have files removed, and thus reduce the capacity by 20%. But I still would like to know what happened and how to prevent these errors from happening again. I am new to storage management.
    "Failures have been detected by the VERITAS Volume Manager:<br /><br />failed disks:<br /> disk04<br /><br />failed plexes:<br />vol02-02<br />vol04-02<br />vol06-P04<br /><br />These volumes are still usable, but the the redundancy of<br />those volumes is reduced. Please advise. Thanks.

Out of the 11 or 12 disk drives on the system in question, disk# 8 (c3t1d0) was labeled "unformatted", when I ran the format, analyze, and read commands. Does this mean the disk can be re-formatted or replaced? I will dig into the documenation in the meantime.
This is the result I get when I run the vxprint -g rootdg -thf command:

  • What's new in Solaris 10 1/06?  Support for UltraSPARC IV+?

Where can I find out what is new in Solaris 10 1/06? I have seen this page, http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/whats_new.jsp which doesn't give much detail. And it looks like docs.sun.com has not been updated with any 10 1/06 documentation.
Also, does Solaris 10 1/06 support UltraSPARC IV+?
    Thanks.

You have tried reading through the "view all" categories I hope ? Because that really is what changed ;-)
Seriously, its not that spectacular as you can see. Some programs have been "enhanced" (bugfixed IMO) and the most drastic (new) features are IMO basicly using / adding Grub to the x86 branch and making the update manager part of the system.

  • Running BDB 4.7.25 on Solaris 10 U8 with ultrasparc iv+

    hello,
i have a question with regards to building BDB 4.7.25 on a Solaris 10 U8 and using UltraSparc CPU iv+.
i actually have two deployments one with Ultrasparc iv+ and IIIi. the same configuration is applied , and built in the same way
using default configuration. both DB starts correct on both boxes, however, when i try to stress both of them with Multi/read/write/modify operations, the Version on
Ultrasparc 4+ hangs/mutex lock issues, while the UltraSparc 3i, resolve them with no problems at all.
i cant help but wonder, is there any significat change between the two CPU versions? and does BDB require any special build for Ultrasparc 4 version?
    thanks a lot

    Ok thanks,
I am not aware of any difference that would cause such
a problem. Maybe someone else has more information.
One thought would be to run test_mutex (a standalone mutex
test for Berkeley DB mutexes) on both systems. You can find
this in your distribution at: db-4.7.25/mutex/test_mutex.c
    Thanks,
    Sandra

  • UltraSPARC I processors are not supported by this release of Solaris.

I'm getting this message when trying to install Solaris 10 on my Ultra Enterprise 2. My buddy that gave it to me has the same exact system and had no problems installing Solaris 10. Maybe he has UltraSPARC II? Can I upgrade to UltraSPARC II? Will Solaris 9 work with my system till I upgrade? Or do I have to go back as far as 7 and if so, where do I download 7? Thank you in advance.

The Ultra-2 is indeed a compatible platform for Solaris 10
but only for the faster SPARC-II cpu modules.
Your model computer could use UltraSPARC
and it could use UltraSPARC-II cpus.
They actually were a slightly different design.
What cpu's do you have? CPU speed is ... ???
The 167MHz and 200MHz modules were not US-II components.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U2/components.html#CPUModule
However the 300MHz and 400MHz Ultra-2 cpus were SPARC-II components.
Lastly, the Solaris 10 Release Notes (817-0552) mention that your systemboard
needs to be at an OBP version of 3.11.2 or newer.
If it isn't there yet, you'll need to flash-update your board, as well,
before you think about Solaris 10.
    So ...
If you can't run Sol-10, put any older version on it. ( 2.5.1 through 9 )

  • Generating 32 bit applications on Solaris 9 / UltraSparc III+

    Hallo.
I wish to generate some 32 bit applications on Solaris 9 and UltraSparc III+ platform. I need to do that as my process have to dinamically link a 32 bit shared object previosuly installed by another software (to be precise, the library is an "ELF 32-bit MSB dynamic lib SPARC Version 1, dynamically linked, not stripped").
After my generation, some executables that runned perfectly on my previous UNIX SCO platform, now crash when exiting.
Moreover I find out that my master process correctly launches the execution of a slave process (I traced the values of the paramters passed to the execv() system call) but the slave process immediatly exits because it gets wrong parameters (I found out that in the main() function within the slave program, the argc parameter is 0 (!!) that sounds really really strange!!)
Is there anyone able to help me?
For your information, when I compile my objects I use the following options:
    cc -g -xc99=none -xtarget=ultra -xchar -c <source>
and when I link them I use the following:
    /usr/ccs/bin/ld -z defs -z verbose -dy -B dynamic -o <processname> <object list> <shared library> -lm -lc
Doing so, both the master and slave process are "ELF 32-bit MSB executable SPARC32PLUS Version 1, V8+ Required, UltraSPARC1 Extensions Required, dynamically linked, not stripped"
    Thank you in advance!!
    Gianni

Why do you want to make your own link lines?
Use cc to link, not ld. You ask for trouble.
    I made the following program:
    int main(int argc, char **argv) { return argc;}
    % cc -c t.c
Then used your link line to link it:
    % /usr/ccs/bin/ld -z defs -z verbose -dy -B dynamic -o a.out t.o -ln -lc
    % a.out
    Segmentation fault (core dumped)
Use cc to link. Do not try to use ld. Or if you really, really think you have to use ld yourselves, run cc -### ... first to se what link line it uses, and try to make the variation you need yourselves. But all kind of options to ld can also be given to cc.

  • Help building bdb ultrasparc 64 solaris 10

The default build for Berkeley DB runs fine but the libs built are 32bit. The rest of my app is 64bit and uses pthreads. Build system is an ultrasparc running Solaris 10.
I attempt to build Berkeley DB to get 64bit libraries as follows:
    .../db-4.8.26.NC/build_unix> make realclean
    .../db-4.8.26.NC/build_unix> env CXXFLAGS="-m64" CFLAGS="-m64" LDFLAGS="-m64" ../dist/configure enable-cxx enable-pthread_api
at this point, the configure script complains: "configuration: error: invalid feature name: pthread_api
How can I correctly build 64 bit BDB libraries, which I need to link my c++ app with?
    Thanks

The only reference to pthread_api in config.log is on line 7:
    $ ../dist/configure --enable-pthread_api
It's telling me what the invocation command line is. Notice that it doesn't mention the --enable-cxx, which is a little worrisome.
You say you cannot reproduce this issue? Did you you use the same line as me? I only get the message, and consequent failure of the configure script if I first set environment variables for a 64 bit compile.
So with this, the configure script fails (and prints the message about pthread_api being an invalid parameter:
    env CXXFLAGS="-m64" CFLAGS="-m64" LDFLAGS="-m64" LIBS="-lpthread" ../dist/configure enable-cxx enable-pthread_api
Maybe a better question to ask is:
How do I build 64bit BDB libraries on an ultrasparc Solaris 10 machine?
    Thanks

  • Solaris 9/Installation in UltraSparc

    Hi,
Im trying to install a Solaris 9 OS in a Sun Fire v240 machine.
First I introduced a clear SCSI HDD and the Installation DVD in the DVD PCI device. Whe I did 'boot' in the OPROM prompt it seemed 'Bad magic nuber in disk label. Cant open disk label package. Evaluating: . Cant open boot device'. When I did 'boot cdrom' it answered 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:'
Then I formatted the HDD into a ufs format. And now when I do again 'boot cdrom' it answered me 'Boot device: /pci@1e600000/ide@d/cdrom 0,0 f File and args: . Boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:
SCSI HDD and IDE DVD are correctly connected. Installation CD Solaris 9 is original.
I even proved with a original Solaris 8 and Solaris 10 installation CD with the same results...
How can I do a correct installation of Solaris??
    Thanks you!!

Q1: Am I doing the right steps?Yes, assuming you made no error writing the iso images to blank CDs. Make sure to use the "write cd from
iso image file" function in you cd writing software.
You can also try to boot from the "Software 1 of 2" CD. It's bootable, too.
Q2: Can I boot the Solaris 9 installation from the A drive, is there any way to create the boot floppy diskette(s) for it?Yes, the CD "Software 2 of 2" contains a 1.44MB boot floppy image, in file /Solaris_9/Tools/d1_image
Write the image to a formatted floppy, using the msdos "rawrite.exe" or "dd.exe" utility.

  • On Sun fire v490 - Solaris 10 with Oracle 8.1.7.4 & Sybase 12.0

    Hi,
We are going to upgrade our server with this configuration -
Sun Fire V490     2 x 1.05 GHz UltraSPARC IV CPU
    8096MB RAM     2 x73GB local disk
    2x FC 2GB Sun/QLogic HBAs
    DAT72
On one machine we will have Sun Solaris v10 with
Oracle DB v8.1.7.4 & Second one will be Sun Solaris v10 with Sybase DB v12.0.0.6.
Now our question is - Sun fire have Hyper-thread CPUs will the O/S and databases (Oracle and Sybase) view the proposed system as a true 4 CPU platform? Will parameters used to tune the database such as Sybase max online engines still operate in the same manner as before?
    Our old machine configuration was - Sun E450     4x400MHz CPU     1024MB RAM     2 x18; 8x36GB disks

Questions on Oracle and Sybase should be directed to a database forum, this forum is for Sun hardware support.

The topic of tuning Oracle or Solaris is way beyond the scope of this forum, I have attempted to go into it before but didn't get any feedback and I would only like to spend lots of time on it if I was being paid!!! On the memory side, keep in mind that Oracle 9i 64-bit can address a maximum of 2 ^ 64 ( 16777216 TB ) memory, prior to that the DBA had to define memory parameters in init.ora. To be honest the last time I worked with a Oracle 8 database I shut a HP K class server down permanently that had been migrated to Oracle 9i on Solaris by an Oracle consultant and I can't remember all the tuning trick etc.

  • Solaris 8 on Ultra 2 Enterprise installation problem...

I've a Sun Ultra 2 Enterprise with dual 200 Mhz UltraSPARC I and I tried to install Solaris 8, I download the binaries from Sun site and I burnt the CDs. Insert them in the CDROM drive, I type "boot cdrom", the installation started and it started also the grafical interface, the mouse doesn't work (the cursor still in the center of the screen) and appear a Console windows that asks if Solaris should use the slice c0t0d0s1 for swap, but the keybord (I use a type 5C keyboard and mouse) don't write, so I can't type "yes", but STOP+A works and on OPB I can write.
In the end, on the grafical interface of installation mouse doesn't work and I can't write (works only STOP, arrows, ecc...)
    Thanks, Paolo.

Well, to install the box you could type
    boot cdrom - install w
that will give you the textbased install GUI if you are booting from Solaris CD 1/2 . You might have to get a working mouse later, but this will at least install the OS for you.
