R: how to, and with what quality, converting OVM Templates to VMWare

Hi all
My customer wants to migrate from VMWare to Oracle VM for the Oracle products they have, but that will be a somewhat longer process. They need to stick to VMWare for their runtime platform at least for a longer while.
We are looking at what steps are possible now, and one of the routes the customer suggested is to start using the OVM Templates, and create OVM templates with a more or less "design" installation for Oracle VM. Then do a conversion to VMWare and run it as a VMWare virtual machine.
Is such a conversion possible, and will there be any quality left ? I assume the initial run scripts will not work for example?
Also we want to use OEM as the central point for provisioning. So somehow we would need to provision the VMWare images as well. But that will be for a different forum :-)
Thanks
Jan Willem

Hi Dave
The runtime platform as a whole is controlled by a division of the organization that is not ready and willing to move to OVM yet. I have this discussion regularly and the discussions, also this time, are typically around supportability, standardization and maturity. OVM is favoured by the architects, but they do not have all the power :-)
The organization claims not to have the skills, the right monitoring framework (for instance a link to Tivoli) in place, no experience etc. so they cannot support the app in production. Also they are still on the concept of a standardized platform for all apps, not just the oracle ones. The non-oracle apps typically are supported on VMWare. Then they usually claim the huge market share as opposed to OVM to support their claim that VMWare is a more mature product.. In short many reasons for an admin organization not to adopt OVM. So they just will not support an app run on OVM in production..
In the meantime they also have decided against VMWare and go for Bare metals.
Thanks
Jan Willem

    Hello, for a multilingual catalog project I would have to know how and with what tool I can place text from Excel or a database in text frames / tables. Data merge is really useful in many circumstances, but my first question would be about the size of the project. A really large catalog might be better handled by processing an IDML in some kind of translation memory tool.
    If all of your multilingual content is already in Excel, then it's probably best handled with a Data Merge. Note that you can't save Unicode CSV out of Excel for the merge, so for many languages you'll need to save "Unicode Text" out of Excel and tweak your import settings when you select a Data Source for encoding (Unicode) and delimiter (tab instead of comma).

  • Dead(?) hp JetDirect ex PLUS = LJ 4ML; fix or replace - and with WHAT?

    Dear fellow Mac addicts --
    Some months back, various helpful souls (notably Greg Sahli) set me straight on the way to get my old serial-port hp LaserJet 4ML to be able to print from my two Tiger-Macs. For the past months, I've had an eBay-bought hp JetDirect EX PLUS Print Server hooked into an eNet switch into which both my Macs are networked. The serial side of that Print Server was connected to the LaserWriter 4ML. I managed to get the JetDirect EX PLUS's IP address set properly (again thanx to Greg Sahli!) and both Macs were able to print nicely to my old workhorse. We also have an Epson elCheapo for color. But that was then...
    A week ago, we went on vaca and in prep therefor, I powered down the entire LAN, even going so far as to unplug the cable from the cable modem. Probably for the first time since I'd reset the JetDirect EX PLUS's IP addr, I powered it down by disconnecting my UPS from the mains and turning it off.
    Everything has come back online just fine, save for the JetDirect EX PLUS and the ability to print to the LaserJet 4ML. The latter printer can print all its self-test pages and its serial input is plugged into the JetDirect EX PLUS. The LAN switch is hooked into the JetDirect EX PLUS's RJ45 plug and the LEDs on the switch itself indicate that a slow-speed Ethernet connect has taken place on that plug.
    "This is curious," I thought, "because if I remember correctly, resetting the JetDirect EX PLUS's IP addr is supposed to be semi-permanent across power cycles."
    I reset the JetDirect EX PLUS to factory default by the means described in its manual. Holding down the TEST button for more than 3 seconds results in the pattern of LED activity described in the manual, also.
    The problem is that a brief depression of the TEST button, while the JetDirect EX PLUS is directly connected to the LaserJet 4ML, does NOT result in the latter producing a test page describing its various settings, including its now factory-reset IP address. [I'm satisfied that the LaserJet 4ML is OK, since it can produce its own test pages -- its internal electronics and paper transport are OK. It's unlikely that it is the serial plug or cable that has deteriorated over the last week.]
    It therefore looks to me (and please check me on this and ask for any further tests or info) that this JetDirect EX PLUS managed to degrade while powered down over my vaca, and that it is DEAD.
    I suppose I can buy another JetDirect EX PLUS on eBay... but should I?
    I need cheap black-and-white laser-quality printing as well as the Epson color printer I have on my system... the faster the better...
    The moderately expensive ($~60) print cartridge on the LaserJet 4ML was on its last legs anyway.
    If this were your situation (and your JetDirect EX PLUS was indeed DEAD), would you buy another JetDirect EX PLUS and use it to resurrect the old workhorse LaserJet 4ML (whose cost by now has been completely recovered over the last >10Years!), or would you just chuck the lot and buy a new CHEAP PER PAGE, moderately fast (>5PPM) laser(-quality) printer with a more modern network interface? I think that I could part with $150ish for such a beastie.
    So may I ask you which new printer would you recommend, and why please? Thanks for any cycles you can spare.

    Yipes, Peter Ragone1! That's some high-priced (for me) printer ya got there! I'm envious of its capabilities, and I guess I'd be OK with dispensing with duplex if need be...
    IIRC we paid a cool thou for that LaserWriter 4ML a heckuva long time ago (>16Yrs back)... Not too bad for a guy who first used "Dover" laser printers back in the 1970s when they cost $1M and the US Government bought 'em for us (while PostScript was being invented by a friend); and who also bought the first "vaguely corporately affordable" laser printer for his company, for about $100K in the late 1980s...
    I hear you about flimsy modern construction. If I can't find something that looks durable I may just spring for another JetDirect EX Plus and keep the ol' LaserWriter 4ML workhorse going until it craps out finally. After all these years, its page-count is still only about 21,000 -- so we're not a heavy-usage site by a long shot!
    I'd say that my min requirements are shaking down to be
    * >300x300 resolution (might as well improve)
    * Network connectivity (RJ45 Ethernet)
    * PostScript (not emulation)
    * $200 or less
    * B&W (I imagine color laser to be way too expensive)
    * 10 PPM or better
    * Cheapest cost/page
    * Doesn't break if you look at it crosseyed
    Nice-to-haves:
    * Large paper capacity (I think the 4ML holds about 250 sheets, about .5")
    * Duplex
    Not needed:
    * Envelope printing
    * Color (that's what the Epson elCheapo's for)
    =====
    Starting to seem like Brother HL-2070N might be best, if it passes the crosseyed test and does PostScript... anyone know about whether it does .PS? I'm betting not because Adobe are notorious moneygrubbers and probably charge printer manufacturers a pretty penny for on-board PostScript interpreters...

    I have a MAC OS 10.5.8 with i photo 08, version 7.1.5.
    I prepared a photo book to order via the Apple Shop as i did several times before without any problems.
    But this time  when it comes to order the book I get the message" Version 07 no longer valid". I need to upgrade iphoto but I don't know how.
    How do i upgrade and will the iphoto 11 work on my old MAC? or is there another version I can use
    thks a lot beacuse I am a little lost

    Before upgrading to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, you need to first purchase a retail install disc of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard to install first.
    If you are from Canada or France, you need to get this discs from an online Apple website in your country.
    Here is the disc you need here in the U.S. Apple Store website.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    After getting this disc and installing the initial version of OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, you can use OS X Software Update feature to update to OS X 10.6.8 where that update gives you access to the Mac App Store and the free upgrade to OS X 10.9 Mavericks, if you choose.
    Another thing you need to do is to upgrade the amount of system RAM in your Mac.
    Currently, your Mac only has 2 GBs of RAM installed. This a bare minimum, paltry amount of RAM for running the newer versions of OS X.
    Newer versions of OS X really need a real working, mimimum RAM amount of 4 GBs.
    Your Mac model can take a total of 6 GBs of RAM.
    I advise installing the complete total 6 GBs of RAM.
    Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).
    OWC ( macsales.com) has the 6 GB RAM module kit.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Other%20World%20Computing/5300DDR2S6GP/
    If you are not from the U.S., OWC (macsales.com), I believe, has international shipping of their products.

  • How to sync a folder on a Mac and a PC ... how and with what limitation?

    Most of the time I work on a Mac (when I work from home ... love the Mac), but sometimes I need to work on a PC running Windows XP Professional (when I m in the office company policy).
    My question now is how I can automatically sync my work folder between my Mac and my PC? I would prefer the sync process to run on the Mac, but I am open to suggestions.

    Where is your work folder being stored? On a flash drive or on a server on your company network? Somewhere else?
    Provided your company's server is set to allow "offline files" Windows XP has built-in sync services. You can usually select a folder on the server and right-click it and then look for the synchronization option. This works great for Windows. Possibly your files could be synchronized to a flash drive.
    On the Mac side Synchronize Pro from Qdea has been a reliable way for our company to synchronize files between two servers during migrations. It would probably be worth looking into.
    Some folks might suggest a .Mac account, which will allow you to store files on .Mac and then have your Mac automatically synchronize. I suggest against anything that stores company files on the Internet, but it's your prerogative.
    Hope this helps! bill

  • How to work with low quality offline media efficiently?

    I have a late 2013 rMBP with an NVIDA GPU that is a fantastic platform for editing when I am travelling. The downside is that it doesn't have allot of storage and when I have high bit rate material it can struggle. I often shoot DNxHD 220 on an Atomos Ninja 2 and for a recent project I used AME to convert all of this to DNxHD 36. I then kept the original files on my NAS and copied the low quality files to my laptop to edit while travelling. This worked really nicely, but when it comes to rendering out the finished project it can be laborious to switch the media files. I have numerous clips and I had to go to each one and follow these steps: Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Create clips for offline editing
    Is there a way of replacing all clips in a bin rather than doing it one by one? This time I had 30 clips which was annoying but not the end of the world. For future projects this could be many more clips and currently the process documented in the Premier help is going to be time consuming and annoying. Does anyone have any tips or are there new features in the latest CC updates which allow this type of functionality to be done in bulk?

    shooternz uses a LOT of digital intermediate workflow ... he might have ideas on this, hope he chimes in ...

  • Who gets past 240 FSB and with what BIOS/settings?

    I hope that folks at MSI are working hard for a BIOS fix.
    I don't understand how some guys are reporting FSBs of higher than 240, but I'm totally stuck there, no matter what I do. BIOS 1.2B5 made no difference at all.
      Just you MSI guys make sure that all these are BIOS issues and not hardware related. My CPU has not reached its limit at 240FSB and I want it.  Oh, and same goes to AMD   for locking the higher multis. If they were not locked, I'd have been just perfectly pleased

    First of all I am aiming for a 2.3-2.4GHz cpu speed, with memory running at 200Mhz or better.  This means I have to crank the fsb up to 250 or 260 and use a 9x multiplier, and 6:5 ratios.  These are my targets, now onto what I have tried.
    Using the 1:1 ratio, I have managed to get to 2.15GHz (10x215fsb), with the memory at 2-3-5-2 (2.85V).  CPU voltage is default, and I've also run up to 225fsb with this config, although I have to slacken memory timings.
    I have also used a 6:5 memory divider to try and see how far I can push the fsb/cpu speed.  I got up to 225fsb (2.25GHz cpu speed), again on default voltage and it was perfectly stable.
    However the problems start when I try and go over 230 fsb, the board just will not POST.  I have kept the memory running below 200Mhz when trying this, and have even used 9x multiplier, 3xHTT etc...with no luck.
    The highest I ever got it to POST on was about 232fsb (using 9x multiplier)
    See my posts on my memory tests:  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?threadid=54265&sid=
    I found two great brands of ram that allow me to run at 230 and 235fsb 4ht 1:1 with 2.7V 1t-2.5-3-3-10 timings. They both passed 30 rounds of memtest86 with no errors at this speed. Cpu@ 2350 mhz @ 1.6V

  • Hey!!! Please I need help!.. I study architecture and I want to buy a Mac!.. which one and with what especifications do u recomend me??

    For what you'll be using it for, I would suggest going with the Macbook PRO 15' 2.6GHz.
    While you can use the Macbook PRO 15' 2.3GHz, for an extra $300, you'll be getting a faster processor, bigger hard drive and more RAM.
    It's a good idea to go with 8GB for whatever CAD program you'll be using.
    If you decide to get the 2.3GHz version, just make sure you up the RAM to 8GB.
    good luck...

  • How to find out what was imported from Import-CSV

    If I have an input file that could contain any CSV field names in the headers and after I run Import-CSV I want to find the names of the fields that were imported. How can I do this?

    Hi Patrick,
    generally speaking, you can figure out a lot about what you are working with by using the PowerShell commandline, not a script. You can inspect an object's 'attributes' - as shown by Adam - using the Get-Member cmdlet (You can do this to the content of any
    variable, not just Csv imports):
    # Get content of Csv file
    $Data = Import-Csv "C:\temp\Input.csv"
    # List properties:
    $Data | Get-Member
    The resulting information is a table with 3 columns:
    - Name: The Name of the attribute
    - MemberType: This tells you what it is. The two Types usually of interest are "Method" and anything containing the word "Property". Method does something (Save a file, disable a Mailbox, etc.). Property is a piece of Information (eg. UserName,
    Email, Address, ...).
    - Definition: The definition-column is in my opinion the most interesting aspect of the output of Get-Member. This tells you how to interact with the objects' 'attribute' in question. In case of methods, it shows how to call it and what it returns (Let's say
    you want to save a file: The Method Save() might then require you to specify a path where to save the file).
    In case of Properties however it tells you what kind of information is stored in the Property. If you import a csv, that's always a string for each column, since all you can store in a csv file is text. In some cases, when the console behaves differently to
    what you'd expect, check this out - it may well be that the property is of a type you didn't expect. All Types can be looked up on MSDN (just copy paste the full type-name to google and it'll send you there).
    Learn to use the Get-Member cmdlet and you can figure out how to work with what the console gives you all on your own (Seriously, it's one of the three most important cmdlets in all of PowerShell). Try reading:
    Get-Help Get-Member -Examples
    Those examples explain the use of Get-Member better than I ever could :)
    Cheers,

  • How do I make screen brighter and the sound quality better with W8 OS on my iMac through bootcamp assistant like it is with my mac os ?

    How do I fix my screen brightness on my imac  via W8 OS on my Imac through boot camp assistant and How do I fix the quality of the sound coming from my imac when in w8?

    Alright, first off, thank you for your help so far. I really appreciate it. However, now I have a new problem that I need help with.
    I did exactly what you've said to do, and it worked fine, the screen itself became brighter again, it was just too dim before and the brightness settings were all the way up, but after doing what you said to do, It's as it is when using my Apple/Mac OS. The sound coming from the computer speakers and all the other audio issues have been fixed as well. It all sounds like it should in terms of quality. It's just now that I did that, I'll shutdown my computer, or even restart it for some reason, and each and every single time I do that, It's all back to the way it was before installing anything, dim and poor audio quality. Until I install the drivers again like before.
    Am I going to have to get used to that or something? Or is there an option I'm just not seeing that would make these preferences and instalations permanent until I input/imply otherwise??
    Thanks in advance!!

  • Where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?

    I'm just curious as to whether anyone else has had this issue or not: Does anyone else feel like, after searching for specific songs, there's just little to nothing in the database? I feel like most of my searches are pointless because iTunes has either no data of my requested search and/or only has bits and pieces of it.
    Another question I have: After having a slightly successful search, why am I left with low quality tunes? I mean, you can hear the compression... badly. (I know it's not my speakers)
    Last question: If I'm paying for the song, shouldn't I be allowed to download a universal file? iTunes uses a unique format that no other application uses. In other words, more money has to be spend for m4a to mp3 converters (unless you're a cracker [not a racial comment]).
    To me, I value iTunes and its team, so I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I understand there are contracts involved with the artists and it's hard to please ALL of the subscribers. But seriously, where's the music on iTunes, and what's with the quality and compatibility?
    Custom   Windows XP Pro   Negative, I am a meat popsicle.

    Today I thought of finally putting lyrics on my songs. So I've been quite some time busy doing that, then I tried it on my iPad (2) and I can't find them. Just as the people above say. Then I went to search where I can find them and I found this page. I'm really dissapointed and I don't understand how something like this could happen. So I hope Apple will fix this soon.
