R&R 4.0 Bootable DVD + Network Recovery from other Subnet

Hi everyone,
we upgraded quite recently a bunch of workstations in the
office to brand spanking new Lenovo ThinkCentre A62 machines.
They are running great so far, very little to complain about.
Anyway, some software which came along were Rescue & Restore, which
is also available as a bootable DVD.
So we decided to give it a try (R&R) and among from various options for us
interesting was saving workstations directly to Samba share which resides
on the other subnet.
Workstations within the office are within 192.168.255.0 network. Samba shares
and backup target lies within 192.168.254.0 network.
So now comes the interesting part, which we couldn't resolve yet:
When one particular workstation will be started with R&R bootable DVD and
restore or rescue is about to be done through network connection, please let
me know if I'm mistaken it but R&R tries to sniff only the local network and
if it does not find anything that would fit, then network stays blank and there's
no target to rescue to or a source where restore data from.
Did I miss something as I couldn't find any network configuration options within
R&R 4.0 DVD after it booted.
I know a product from another manufacturer named True Image which lets
you configure network either manually or automatically through DHCP.
All in all, did I miss such an option within R&R 4.0 or could it be that this software
does not allow individual network configuration?
I would be very glad for any information regarding this. Thank you in advance for hints.
Cheers,
Chekov

As there's been no reactions to my original posting, I'm replying to this thread myself and
asking wheather somebody knows if there's any future plans of implementing Network Configuration
feature on Rescue & Recovery software??
Pre-installed versions of Rescue & Recovery 4 on these Lenovo ThinCenter A62 machines are
4.21.0014.00 and bootable DVD version of Rescue & Recovery 4 is having a version tag 4.21.9US0.00.
As far as I know the latest version of R&R 4 software has version 4.21.0016.00 tag but that version
has just some Active Directory improvements.
All in all, R&R 4 works only within a networked environment if clients will be offered IP-addresses from
DHCP-server IP-pool.
I am after manual network configuration so that in case of recovery it would be possible to configure
network per client manually (static IP-address).
Does anybody know is there any plans for such feature in future version of Rescue & Recovery software?
While Windows clients are running, we are obviously able to make backups to network share target but
in "worst scenario" where one particular client system has to be rescued using bootable DVD of R&R 4
software there's no way to reach network share source where backup image of a client has been saved
due to lack of network configuration features.
Most probably we are going to adapt more advanced products with professional network support.

  • Recovery Partition vs. Bootable DVD

Okay, so I recently screwed things up on my [brand new] rMBP thanks to Windows which led me to formatting the main had drive [Apple SSD.. and not Macintosh HD] Now, even Internet Recovery won't work and it tells me to contact AppleCare (which I can't do at the moment).
QUESTION: Is it possible to install Mountain Lion from a bootable DVD or does the Recovery partition also download additional software specific to the Mac I have, and so installing from bootable DVD won't work?
    Thanks in advance,
    Ayman

Don't use a DVD. Better to use a USB flash drive.
    Make Your Own Mountain/Lion Installer
    1. After downloading Mountain/Lion you must first save the Install Mac OS X Mountain/
Lion application. After Mountain/Lion downloads DO NOT click on the Install button.
Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the Mountain/Lion installer. Move
the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You
must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes
        installing.
    2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
      a. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
      b. After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left
side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      c. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until
          the process has completed.
      d. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side
list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      e. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the
button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
      f. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash
         drive size.
    3. Locate the saved Mountain/Lion installer in your Downloads folder. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the installer and select Show Package Contents from the contextual menu. Double-click on the Contents folder to open it. Double-click on the SharedSupport folder. In this folder you will see a disc image named InstallESD.dmg.
    4. Plug in your freshly prepared USB flash drive. You are going to clone the content of the InstallESD.dmg disc image to the flash drive as follows:
      a. Double-click on the InstallESD.dmg file to mount it on your Desktop.
      b. Open Disk Utility.
      c. Select the USB flash drive from the left side list.
      d. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      e. Select the USB flash drive volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
      f. Drag the mounted disc icon from the Desktop into the Source entry field.
      g. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
When the clone is completed you have a fully bootable installer that you can use without having to re-download Mountain/Lion.
Note: The term Mountain/Lion used above means Lion or Mountain Lion.
As an alternative to the above (you still have to do your own download of Lion/Mountain Lion) you can try using Lion DiskMaker 2.0 that automates the process of Steps 2 through 4.

  • Solaris 10 hands-off installation from a bootable DVD

    Hello,
I have a problem with installing the Solaris 10 using a bootable DVD with a flar archive. I want this installation to be totally hands-off, but unfortunately after I run this boot command at the ok prompt:
ok boot cdrom - install ...
the system is rebooted and the interactive Solaris Installation Program is launched:
    {color:#3366ff}-- The Solaris Installation Program
The Solaris installation program is divided into a series of short sections
where you'll be prompted to provide information for the installation. At
the end of each section, you'll be able to change the selections you've
    made before continuing.
    About navigation...
    - The mouse cannot be used

configurations. In a few cases, mounts that cross domain boundaries might
cause files to appear to be owned by "nobody" due to the lack of a common
    domain name.
The current NFSv4 default domain is: ""

After I select "Continue", the installation is proceeding automatically.
Could you please tell me what I should to to make this installation hands-free?
The sysidcfg file contains these parameters:
    system_locale=C
    timezone=PST8PDT
    timeserver=localhost
    terminal=sun-cmd
    name_service=NONE
    nfs4_domain=dynamic
    network_interface=primary {netmask=255.255.255.0 protocol_ipv6=no}
    security_policy=NONE
I have found some information in the internet, that I need to create the
.NFS4inst_state.domain file in /etc directory. But it doesn't work...
I have also read that I need to edit the post installation script, but as far as I know this script is executed after the installation, so it doesn't affect the solaris Installation Program that is launched after the first reboot.
If you could give me any tips on how to resolve yhis problem, I'd be very thankful.
    Regards,
    Przemek

I had similar, not identical, issues with a custom JumpStart DVD I was creating. I was not using flar and it was for x86, not SPARC.
I found that changing the case for the value assigned to network_interface made a difference. In looking at the sysidcfg manpage and online JumpStart documentation, all the examples they used had capitalized "PRIMARY" and "NONE". When I changed the value to the capitalized equivelant, my particular issue had gone away.
You may also want to consider adding ip_address and default_route to the network_interface section. Test either way to identify the differing results.
In my particular scenereo, I did not want any networking configuration to be done. The resulting line in sysidcfg was:
    network_interface=NONE {hostname=jsclient}HTH

  • Can I make a bootable DVD from the Mavericks download. I would like to wipe my iMac and start over.

Can I make a bootable DVD from the app store download of Mavericks. I wish to wipe my iMac clean and start over
    thanks in anticipation

Well you can make a bootable dvd this way:
After downloading the Install OS X Mavericks.app file from the Mac App Store, run these 12 commands in Terminal to create a Mavericks.iso file and then burn it to a dual layer DVD with Disk Utility. You may then boot up from it by holding the option key down and then install mavericks. This will not install a recovery partition. To do that, uncompress and run the script file https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/13872235/Musings/Recovery%20Partition%20Crea tor%203.7.zip
    hdiutil attach /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/SharedSupport/InstallESD.dmg -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_app
    hdiutil convert /Volumes/install_app/BaseSystem.dmg -format UDSP -o /tmp/Mavericks
    hdiutil resize -size 8g /tmp/Mavericks.sparseimage
hdiutil attach /tmp/Mavericks.sparseimage -noverify -nobrowse -mountpoint /Volumes/install_build
    rm /Volumes/install_build/System/Installation/Packages
    cp -rp /Volumes/install_app/Packages /Volumes/install_build/System/Installation/
    hdiutil detach /Volumes/install_app
    hdiutil detach /Volumes/install_build
    hdiutil resize -size `hdiutil resize -limits /tmp/Mavericks.sparseimage | tail -n 1 | awk '{ print $1 }'`b /tmp/Mavericks.sparseimage
    hdiutil convert /tmp/Mavericks.sparseimage -format UDTO -o /tmp/Mavericks

  • HP Pavilion DVD-3013eo recovery problem with dvd`s Win 7 x64

Hi, i have a problem with my dv7-3013eo pavilion, recovery dvd just wont work, they are original but here's the problem:
in recovery pavilion says something like this on start recovery program is not compatible of this version of windows, but it proceed, then it Boot's then the installation stars and then uiadump32exe crashes, and pavilion says start recovery again? that shall i do?
My windows version is WIndows 7 x64 Home, and computer is broken. dvd are fine and this is first time i have to use them.

    Hi:
I don't have an answer for you, but I have a workaround if you can't get the recovery disks to work.
You will only have the option of installing the English, French or Spanish version of W7 Home Premium 64 bit.
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to DVD's for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.
    http://www.mydigitallife.info/official-windows-7-sp1-iso-from-digital-river/
Now, instead of burning these to a DVD, use the Windows 7 USB flash drive installation tool available at the link below and follow the instructions on the page to install.
You will need a 4 GB flash drive or larger.

  • Mac Pro not recognizing bootable DVDs and Disk Utility giving odd results.

My issue is complex, but I'll try my best to explain it as I can.
One has been resolved it seems, but I am including it so that the whole issue can be seen in context.
    Friday, May 16, 2014
Last night, after rebooting my Mac Pro from my Bootcamp partition (I'm using Windows 7 Professional if that information is helpful) I received a kernel panic upon Mac OS X booting (Mac OS X 10.6.8).
My first action was to launch Disk Utility to verify the Mac HD, verify was stopped by disk utility citing that I should insert my Mac OS X install DVD and repair the disk.
I tried booting from my Snow Leopard install DVD. After the grey Apple logo appeared with the gear spinning below it remained for roughly ten to fifteen seconds (a little long) — then the Apple logo changed to. A grey prohibitory sign (circle with a diagonal line through it, the spinning gear remained. — I tried booting from the Snow Leopard DVD a few time, same result.
Following this I tried booting using Disk Warrior, same result again.
I tried booting both the Snow Leopard and Disk Warrior DVDs in both my upper and lower optical drives, with no change.
I decided to leave the issue and call Apple Support in the morning
    Saturday, May 17, 2014
This morning I woke my Mac Pro from sleep, opened Disk Utility and tried verifying the hard drive to see if it was temporary — same result, 'please insert the Mac OS X install DVD and repair the drive.' — I also tried booting the install DVD again with no result.
I then booted my Mac into Safe Mode to check my hardware.
Upon opening Disk Utility and verifying my Mac HD — the result "Macintosh HD appears to be OK", rand the test again to see if this was an anomaly, but disk returned another pass.
I performed a normal restart of my system, although Finder was a little slower to load than normal, the system booted correctly. — I then launched Disk Utility and verified the Mac HD, it returned another pass.
This confused me, after a call to Apple Support the tech explained that 'sometime a Safe Mode boot will fix problems because it disables all non-essential processes when booting. — That makes sense to me.
    However.
The issue of my Mac not recognizing bootable DVDs remains — it reads disks correctly, it just will not boot them.
Other steps I have taken to try and resolve this remaining issue.
    1. a PRAM reset. — No change.
    2. an SMC reset. — No change.
    3. Removal of newly installed RAM. — I have tried both running the old and new RAM separately, no change using either combination.
    4. Running bootable DVDs in different optical bays. — No change from both bays.
    a. My upper drive is an MCE Blu-Ray/DVD combo drive, but I have booted from this drive before. (Less than six months old.)
    b. My lower drive is LG DVD-RAM combo drive, I have also booted from this drive before. (Over one year old, replacement for an Apple optical drive.)
None of the above steps have helped, I still cannot boot from my optical drives — I always receive a prohibitory sign shortly after the Apple logo.
    Other system information:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8
    8GB of RAM (4 x 2GB)
500GB Western Digital Caviar Blue HDD (less than a year old, boot drive for Mac OS X 10.6.8)
1TB Samsung HDD (for data storage and also containing Bootcamp partition)
2TB HDD (cannot remember manufacturer, contains Time Machine backups, as well as data storage)
ATI Radeon HD 5770 with 1GB of VRAM
Sorry for the long post but I really need to be able to boot from my optical drives.

Update: found an old Mountain Lion installation USB flash drive I created a while back.
I am able to boot from the ML USB flash drive, but am still unable to boot from my either my Snow Leopard Install DVD or my Disk Warrior DVD. — I have verified both DVD and they pass verification tests.
This leads me to believe that the problem resides either in the Mac, or in BOTH  the Snow Leopard and Disk Warrior DVDs.
Since I am able to boot from a USB drive, I will look into the possibility of creating a bootable Snow Leopard drive, and perhaps also a Disk Warrior drive — at least until I can resolve the 'not able to boot from DVD' issue.

  • Need help creating a bootable dvd for solaris 9 using windows

Ok, I am using windows XP, I have 2 hard drives in my computer and want to load Solaris 9 on my other hard drive. I have downloaded the ziped ISO files from sun.com, I have extracted them (sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d, and sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e) Now what? I burned them to a DVD but its not booting to them (I have checked my boot sequence) I figured I would have to make a bootable DVD but I don't know how. All the instructions I am finding are for doing it in Solaris 9. Can someone please give me instructions on what I need to do now that I have downloaded the files or point me to a site that already has the instructions? Also I have Nero 7 Essentials as my DVD burning software.
    Thanks

Copy all unzipped pieces into one directory (sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a, sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b etc... all 5 pieces)
take command prompt and goto that directory and run the below command
    copy /b sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-a + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-b + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-c + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-d + sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso-e sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso
    It will create sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso file.
Using any DVD Burner software (e.g. Nero 7 or later), Burn the newly ceated image ( sol-9-u8-ga-x86-dvd-iso.iso) do "Burn Image" (NOT a DATA DVD/CD)

  • Want to make a bootable DVD for Grandson to use.

I picked up a eMac at an auction and want to give it to my Grandson so he will stay off his dad's Powerbook G4. I bought the OSX 10.4 install disks so I can do a legal install. However, I plan on limiting what is installed as a lot is stuff he doesn't need. He is eleven and his dad says he is good at getting into things that can cause the computer to crash. Thus the desire to get him is own computer.
BUT, when he crashes and burns, as I fully expect him to, it would be good if he didn't need to have his dad restore the software. Dad is busy enough with two younger sons, the youngest has SMA which means he can't walk because his legs cannot get strong enough to support him.
The plan is to load the HD with the OS and selected software that he can use for school, etc. Then copy the HD on to a bootable DVD that can be used to restore the HD when needed. I don't expect to have more software than a DVD will hold. He will have to keep his data files on some other storage device, something that his dad said he is already doing after having lost some data in the past.
I remember making a bootable CD but have forgot the details. And the OS was 10.2 as I remember. It required having a bootable CD to get the boot OS from to write on the new CD. Can anyone help me?
    Thanks,
    Larry

  • Can I create a bootable DVD for my Macbook running 10.5.8?

I'm trying to install a larger hdd in my 2007 MacBook 13" 2.16 Core Duo. I used SuperDuper to create a disk image on an external USB drive but when I reboot with the alt/option key depressed, it only finds my internal disk. I'm guessing I can't boot this old laptop from a USB disk, so now I'm wondering if I can create a bootable DVD or CD for it. Or do I need to upgrade my OS?

Hi, if tryly a PowerMac, (PPC instead of Intel), you may need a Firewire Drive to be bootable, most PPC Macs cannot boot OSX from a USB drive.
So we know more about it...
At the Apple Icon at top left>About this Mac, then click on More Info, then click on Hardware> and report this upto but not including the Serial#...

  • Can't Create a Bootable DVD of TechTool Deluxe

I am trying to create a bootable dvd of TechTool Deluxe (from AppleCare) and it just isn't working.
I have followed the instructions to the letter, but when I try to boot from the disk (either by holding down C or changing the startup disk before restarting) all I get is a gray screen that eventually shuts down to black and tries to start again.
I've tried the disk on my brand new 24" iMac as well and it isn't working there either. I previously made a TechTool Deluxe disk for my Mac Mini (now sold) and it did work, so I am confused as to why there is a problem now.
    Thanks for any advice!

Bottom line here is that the TechTool Deluxe from my AppleCare for my MacBook is not bootable on my MacBook.
That's because that disc does not have the right bootROM on it.
Don't worry about it. That TechTool Deluxe disc that comes with AppleCare is a Mickey Mouse lite version of Tech Tool Pro. The idea is to get you to buy TTP.

  • DVD data recovery program for Mac?

    h'lo all
I've burned a Memorex DVD+R DL on my old G5. It burned and verified just fine, but it won't mount on my new MacPro (or any longer on the G5). All of the data recovery programs that are specifically for DVD data recovery seem to be PC only.
Does anyone know of a Mac (OS X) program for DVD data recovery?
    thanks

Prosoft Data Rescue II, Subrosasoft Filesalvage, and Boomerang's Boomerang may be able to extract data from the DVD. Make sure the drive in question is capable of reading the DL media burnt at the speed you burnt your disk, and faster. http://www.macsales.com/ has Firewire DVD drives that are among the fastest Mac compatible drives in the market.

  • Network Recovery: No Internet Connection

Hello, i have a brandnew MacBook Air (2011) with Lion. My problem: The Network Recovery haven't internet connection. There's a little clock (24:00) under the globe, but nothing happens. The App-Store Lion-Version don't works with the new MacBook Airs. It's not possible to install Lion with a USB-Stick or a external drive. Any ideas?

    Solution.
Ethernet don't works, WiFi is okay.
ATTENTION, my mistake: I live in europe with the german-keyboardlayout, but the Mac used the US-keyboardlayout after the reset. I wrote the password wrong, because the keyboardlayouts was different.
