R12 on Dell servers ???

Hi,
How is Oracle apps R12 on dell servers with EMC storage?
Till now I have always used hp or sun servers. On my new they are thinking of R12 upgrade with Dell servers?
Any input is apreciated.

Just get comfortable with Linux and you will be fine. I would go with 64-bit, otherwise you will have a 1.7 GB SGA limitation on 32-bit linux.

  • Dell Servers with Nexus 7000 + Nexus 2000 extenders

<< Original post by smunzani. Answered by Robert. Moving from Document section to Discussions>>
    Team,
I would like to use some of the existing Dell Servers for new network design of Nexus 7000 + Nexus 2000 extenders. What are my options for FEC to the hosts? All references of M81KR I found on CCO are related to UCS product only.
What's best option for following setup?
    N7K(Aggregation Layer) -- N2K(Extenders) -- Dell servers
Need 10G to the servers due to dense population of the VMs. The customer is not up for dumping recently purchased dell boxes in favor of UCS. Customer VMware license is Enterprise Edition.
    Thanks in advance.

To answer your question, the M81KR-VIC is a Mezz card for UCS blades only.  For Cisco rack there is a PCIe version which is called the P81.  These are both made for Cisco servers only due to the integration with server management and virtual interface functionality.

  • WYSE terminals, 802.1x, Cisco 3560, Dell Servers

1)We are having an issue with our WYSE terminals where users can attempt to login before they are device is 802.1x authenticated.
    2) We have Dell Servers with Broadcom Gigabit NiCs. To run at 1000 Full, the card has to be configured for Auto, so I would assume that the switch should be set for auto going by best practices. However, outside vendors are saying that they read that the switch port should be locked at 1000 Full. Please share your thoughts.

GB ports will support auto-negotiation for flowControl but should be set 1000mb statically if you required GB port speed.
do not set your ports to auto, force them to 1GB. (standard practice; my preference)
the ealiest implementations of GB ports did not support 'auto' as a speed type and you only had one option, 1000mb.
todays cisco switches have the ability to set 'auto' for GB speeds but i personally stay away from that and use static settings for GB ports and at most, negotiate the flowControl.
i think it a good practice to statically set your routed ports, server ports, etc. but the ability to 'auto' GB is in todays switches, so it should be possible for you to set it to 'auto' and it work as expected.

  • NIC Teaming on Dell Servers

I am using BASP to setup NIC teaming on a Dell R720 server. My understanding is that both of the following teaming methods supports load balancing/sharing. ie: team with 2 NIC cards (1gbps each) I will get 2gbps throughput. Am I right?
    • Smart Load Balancing and Failover
    • Link Aggregation (802.3ad)
If I were to setup LACP, is it mandatory to define native vlan? Is the following command holds good?
    interface Port-channel100
    switchport trunk encapsulation dot1q
    interface GigabitEthernet 0/1
    description Uplink to Server (NIC-1)
    switchport access vlan 100
    switchport mode access
    channel-group 100 mode active
    spanning-tree portfast
    interface GigabitEthernet 0/2
    description Uplink to Server (NIC-2)
    switchport access vlan 100
    switchport mode access
    channel-group 100 mode active
    spanning-tree portfast

That's what I indicated in my original answer: The access VLAN and switchport modes should be defined on the Port-channel100 interface as well as the member interfaces if you want the bundle to actually be on VLAN 100.
Defining "spanning-tree portfast" ("spanning-tree portfast trunk" for 802.1q) on the Po100 interface should be done for servers. Once you set it on the Po100 interface, it should reconfigure the member interfaces automatically.

Still having the issue using the built in Broadcom Nic's have switched to an Intel 4 port Nic and so far haven't any issues.  Trouble is I have 4 more servers all R410's to be loaded up with w2k8r2 and I don't want to go out an buy another 4 Intel Nic's

    Hi All,
I am having the same problem on DELL T320 with onboard dual-port Broadcom NetXtreme 5720 Gigabit Ethernet Nic running on Wiondows 2012 Server.
The server would lose network connection within 3 to 4 days and either have to reset the NIC's or reboot.
Did anyone find a fix? or do i have the bite the bullet and buy new some Intel cards?
    Thanks

I have a client with a Dell T420 and a Netextreme 5720 and the same issue. Unfortunately, this is a "me too" post, for now. I'm going to try the Broadcom drivers today, but I thought I'd add a the following:
The client reports that their server is down (which is very disturbing since it's a new server). The problem started after moving the server into it's final location and connecting to the Dell 24port gigabit switch (the inexpensive web-managed one). The
first time they reported it the network configuration appeared to have been changed. The first NIC which had been configured to be shared between HyperV and the local host had no IP information; and the second which was a member of a dedicated virtual switch
was not working. I changed the first NIC to local OS only (deleting the virtual switch) and put the VM on the second dedicated virtual switch.
The next day, the server was down. I drove over and the physical computer was online but the VM was not. So, suspecting the second port, I once again configured the primary port to be a member of a virtual switch shared with the local OS. I deleted the dedicated
virtual switch and disabled the second NIC. Of course, I set the VM to use the new shared virtual switch.
For the rest of the day, and the day after, no issues.  Then, this morning, the client reported that the server was down. I had one of them power-cycle the Dell switch and everything came back.  Interestingly, I have the physical machine pinging
the virtual machine and it never lost a packet - but that could be some Windows 2K12 magic as they were on the same NIC.
So, I'll head over there today and install the latest Broadcom Drivers and see what happens.

  • Performance Report for only Dell Windows Servers (i.e. excluding vmware boxes)

    Hi,
What is the best way to get such a report?
    Thx very much,
    John Bradshaw

If these physical servers are in a unique OU or have a unique name, then you can make an instance group of them and run the report for those servers.
Or, find a unique key/service, create a discovery that would find that key/service, and populate a group of those computers call it Dell Servers, or whatever you want.

  • Dell Precision T5810 Core options and GPU config? Running CC on virtual desktops?

Hi, two questions really but didn't want to start multiple threads.
I tried searching for answers to my questions but was not very successful so am trying to post. I am looking at buying some computers for our office which will be using the CC subscription for their workflow. Predominately this is short form video editing on Premiere (3-10min, AVCHD & DSLR mix, 2-3 camera steams, 50/50 just as straight streams/multicam), some light to mid graphics on After Effect and Photoshop then compression through Media Encoder.
Our media will be stored on a Small Tree shared storage server across a dedicated gigabit network.
As Dell have just launch their new workstations using the new version of the Xeon 16 series with DDR4 RAM I was thinking of going down that road. Would I be better getting the Hex Core 1650v3, 500GB HDD, 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM with either a Quadro K2200 or Firepro W5100, or Quad Core 1620v3, 500GB HDD, 16GB DDR4 2133 RAM with Quadro K4200?
As I understand it is important make sure systems are balanced between CPU, GPU, RAM and discs. Which of the above configs would perform better for our work, as I am not sure if the hex core will be more so with a lower GPU, or if the quad with a faster/more expensive GPU will perform better?
I know when it comes to GPU's a kick off would be to say ditch the workstation line for a GTX to save money, but we have a business deal with Dell as a business their 3 year support is an important consideration to us something they do not support if we chop and change out unsupported components such as a GTX card.
The other option I have been made by our IT department is that we could buy Dell servers, add graphics cards and run virtual desktops for the editors on them instead of buying stand alone towers. I have not really seen this being done before for video editing which suggests to me that this does not work for one reason or another, but I have not been able to find out much with my Google-fu (which again is probably a bad sign). Is this as bad an idea as I am assuming or is this a potential avenue.
Hopefully that has all made sense and apologies if I have not followed any forum etiquette, (first time so be kind!)
Thanks in advance for all and any help.
    Ed

    Hi,
Thank you for the replies. Having looked at the virtual option more closely I have discounted it as an option. Was never really something I wanted but our IT insisted I evaluated it as part of the process.
Regarding the workstations I had decided to go with the hex core E5 1650 option so it is good to hear I am heading down the right road! My reasoning for look at the new T5810 (DDR4 RAM) over the previous T3610 which had the 1650v2 (DDR3 RAM) was based on the fact the the cost difference on the website was only about 70-80 pounds. For that little difference it seemed like a good idea to buy the latest offering for future proofing. I will however get Dell to quote me for the two systems and see what the end result is after adding in 32GB of RAM.
I will also speak to them about their warranty as I was under the impression that by putting a non approved card in the system that if there were issues that involved the card in anyway then they would not assist. Either way I had decided to go Nvidia after reading up about the Firepro computability. Sadly I don't think I would have budget for the K4200 but the K2200 looks like it might be a decent performer as it is based on the maxwell architecture so I would expect it punch a bit above its weight. Would this act as the bottle neck in such a system or would it be fast enough to balance out a E5 1650 and 32GB RAM?
If it is only the card itself that will not be supported then I guess this is lesser risk and I could consider a consumer card. If I did go down the GTX route then looking at the price of GTX 770 (ideally I would want the 4GB version as the 2GB could be limiting for the future), there does not seem to be a lot in it between them and the GTX970. I would expect  due to the maxwell architecture that this would offer better performance at a lower power draw so I would expect the be better temps than the previous gen. If so then would this be a better option to go for?
For drives I will look at putting the media cache onto separate drives (we currently do this with our systems that run local storage), though will probably have to be HDD rather than SDD as I have them spare and fast running out of budget!
    Thanks again for all comments.

  • Server load balancing for application access using multiple servers

1.what are the methods supported by cisco switches for load balancing
    2. I want to achive users to access 1 particular ip from different locations but phsically few servers which handle the application and data

well some servers allow you to install routing protocols on them. you could OSPF some links together.
or you could NLB if it is a microsoft server. this uses a heartbeat network, a virtual mac and an IP address bound to the vmac.
you could use NIC teaming. broadcom nics on dell servers allow you to configure them for loadbalancing, failover and a few other options.
or if the servers are mirrored using MSCS or something similar (i.e configured the same but independant) you could just load balance using DNS.
hope this helps. jsut some ideas quickly off the top of my head

  • Hardware Compatibility List for installation of solaris 10 on DELL units

    Hi,
I have a requirement to install solaris 10 on a few Dell servers and desktops.
I was unable to install on Dell PowerEdge SC1435 and noticed it is not on the HCL for Dell servers. This unit has dual core AMD Opteron processors. Is the HCL kept up to date, I noticed items 58 and 59 had the same description (SC1430). Should I abondon further attempts and go to the SC2950 which is on the HCL?
Also on the desktop side, both my choices, Dell OptiPlex 745 dual core, and Dell Precision 690 dual core are not on the HCL. A possible alternative on the HCL is the Precision 670.
    Any info would be apprecitate.

I am also having the same issue on a Dell Poweredge SC1435. I get a "ERROR: The disc you inserted is not a Solaris OS/DVD" right after I select the machine to automatically reboot after it finishes installing. It then kicks me out to a Unix shell prompt and I notice that the CD is no longer mounted when I do a "df -k". I've done some research on the web and none of the proposed solutions worked. I'm assuming this has something to do with hardware conflicts with the machine and the fact that the machine is not on the Hardware Compat List yet.
Plus, I know my cd media is good, since I was able to install Solaris 10 x86 perfectly fine on my Dell Poweredge SC420. I'm using the latest Solaris 10 11/06 CD media.

  • Upgrading E-Business Suite 11.5.9 to R12

    Hi All,
This question must have been asked before, so if that's the case, I would appreciate if you can direct me to the forum thread or document.
We have two identical Dell Servers hosting Red Hat Linux Advanced Server 2.1 and running Oracle Applications 11.5.9 (base. no CU is installed) on Oracle Database 9i (9.2.0.3). Database and Application tiers are on the same server. Servers are named oraprod and oratest. So far, so good.
We need to upgrade our hardware and Oracle E-business suite at the same time. Oracle E-Business will be upgraded to the latest version along with the database (possibly to the latest version). Database and Application will still be running on a single server.
We already purchase two new and better servers (identical) for the new oraprod and oratest.
What is the best upgrade path we should be following? I do not mean the upgrade specifics of the Applications and the Database, they are explained in detail in the Maintenance Wizard and product documents.
This is what I think I will follow:
    - Install new OS (RedHat 5) onto the new servers
    - Copy Database and Application directories onto the server
    - Run Upgrade process
Does this sound correct to you guys?

    Hi, Hussein,
I did see the adgrants.sql after the patch installation and ran it, but AD patch had some errors. One of them about not being able to generate the jar files. I ignored it and chose to continue, thinking that I can generate them with adadmin utility later. Adadmin failed with the following error message:

Would it be enough to upgrade it to version 1.4.2? Because the minimum patch levels for the other versions (J2SE 5.0 and 6) are much higher than what I have.
    Can you please advise?

  • Oracle Enterprise Linux on  Dell

    Hi
I need to know on which Dell Servers Oracle Enterprise Linux will not install.
Can you please let me know if there are any issues installing Oracle Enterprise Linux on
    Dell(TM) PowerEdge(TM) R710 Rack Mount Server on
    -Intel(R) Quad Core E5504 Xeon(R) CPU 2.0GHz
Strangely i am being told that we can install Redhat 5.2 on it but not Oracle Enterprise Linux
    Kindly advise
    Thanks a lot
    Cyril

We have a rack of Dell R710s (6 servers for a 5 node RAC and 1 for OEM). All of them have OEL 5.4 installed on them. We have had no problems running OEL on these systems until we try to initialize IPMI on them following some instructions our DBA got from Oracle. Looking at other non-Oracle documentation for IPMI, we find the same initialization commands so there is nothing specific to Oracle that is failing here.
Except for our problem with IPMI, these boxes work great with OEL.

  • P2V of a Dell Windows server with HW Raid

    Hi,
I've got a few very large WIndows 2003 Dell Servers to Virtualize. The problem I've got is that each of the Dell Servers has a hardware raid configured (using the device driver mraid.sys). If I perform a standard P2V of the Dell Server the Windows image fails to boot because it cannot find the 'C:\' Drive. To overcome this I pefromed a Linux DD of the Dell Server to an 'intermediate' standalone server that doesn't use a raid controller (standard SATA HDD), peformed a Windows repair and then did a P2V from this 'intermediate' standalone server to create the VM Image.
I don't want to modify the original Dell Server (the one with the HW Raid controller), just incase the P2V doesn't work.
Q: Can anyone suggest a better way of pefroming a P2V on a Windows Server that has a HW Raid controller (the device driver is the problem here).
BTW the P2V 'sees' the HDA Partition of the Dell Server. Alternatively is there a way to 'remove' the device driver mraid.sys and repair the VM Image?
    TIA

If you have a My Oracle account (support) take a look at KB article 1122170.1
This is an article that addresses the same problem after virtualizing a HP server (hard ware raid). It has something to do with the MBR placement.
