R7850 power edition 2gd5/0c - fan spin up when idle

Hi -
Apologies for crashing another thread.
Fan spins up every 10 secs or so when the card is idle, please help.
Card s/n is:
602-v273-030B1207076134
Card model is
R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC
(twin Frozr IV)
I stupidly flashed a vbios for a card that I believed was same model, and problem remains.
I do not have the original vbios - it is currently running 110MH.bin.
Thank you -

Yes, that's it.
You have to power off your computer, then to turn it on again then the new vbios will take affect.
Try MSI VGA drivers for your card: http://www.msi.com/product/vga/R7850-Power-Edition-2GD5-OC.html#/?div=Driver&os=All
Remove current one with >>Driver Fusion<< in Safe Mode 1st,
before install the new one

  • R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC and Afterburner + Driver Issues/Concerns?

I just got my R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC today, and did a fresh install of Windows 7 but just had a few concerns and issues so far:
    1. When using the latest beta (12.11) from AMD, Nexuiz seems to cause the system to BSOD. Kombustor, BF3, and other games didn't have any issues, so I just found this strange. However, these are beta drivers for a reason I guess. In any case, 12.10 seems to work fine with Nexuiz, so it definitely seems driver-related...
    2. The highest Core Clock limit in Afterburner is 1050MHz, the same limit in Catalyst. Since this is a PE/OC card, I would've figured the limit to be way higher than this by default? I tried enabling the unofficial overclocking method (t=338906 on Guru3D), but this just caused Afterburner to not have/set any values for both Core and Memory Clocks. I then took a look at this guide (t=359671 on Guru3D) and put the 2 .dll's in Afterburner's folder, and it causes it to be able to read and set clocks properly, however, there is an insane amount of flickering at times (I think due to switching of clocks?).
    3. MSI LiveUpdate 5 can't read my card BIOS or get any information about it aside from it being a 7800 Series card. I was mainly interested in checking for any VBIOS updates, and if it helps, GPU-Z tells me my BIOS Version is 015.015.000.002.000000 (113-xxx-xxx).
    4. The dust-removal fan tech, or more specifically, the fan reversal spinning doesn't stop after 30 seconds if no GPU driver exists in Windows. In other words, if I'm using the Standard VGA drivers, the fans keep spinning (in reverse I'm pretty sure) at what sounds like full power.
I have CPU-Z and GPU-Z validation URL's in my signature for any more system information, and I also have a hec 585W PSU.

For 1. you already solved this yourself to be driver related.
Yeah, I guess I was just more or less curious if anyone else had a similar incident with these drivers.

For 2.: Use Driver Fusion in Safe Mode to remove current VGA drivers.
Then install latest drivers from MSI
    Try again
From what I understand, those are just the standard Catalyst 12.8 drivers from AMD? In any case I saw http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18431335 which in short said to make a desktop shortcut of AB with -xcl, and download some patch; and doing both of those actually worked on Catalyst 12.10 drivers. So everything (so far) seems ok, no flickering or anything.

For 3.: Upload current vbios to a filehoster and post link as well as add S/N

  • MSI R7850 POWER EDITION 2GD5/OC vs TWIN FROZR 2GD5/OC

I had to do an RMA with MSI for the R7850 POWER EDITION 2GD5/OC I had, and it turns out they don't have anymore inventory of it, so I'm accepting a R7850 TWIN FROZR 2GD5/OC as a replacement.
The only differences I can spot immediately are that I may lose voltage control, the Core clock comes slightly lower, and the heatsink is model III instead of IV.
I imagine I can just overclock with Afterburner if needed to up the core clock; I'm wondering if voltage control could also be unlocked though? Also is there any other difference that I should be aware of?

general difference between Power Edition and models with Twin Fozr,
is that Power Editions has Enhanced PWM Design and offers triple voltage control [compared to regular model: + memory voltage and + Aux voltage]

  • R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC come with case badge?

I ordered some new RAM recently, and I just noticed it came with a nice sticker to put on my case, and it reminded me that I didn't have one for my GPU. I ordered a few GPU's in the past from different companies, and their GPU's came with case badges in the box or in the instructions booklet, but I was a bit surprised to not see my R7850 not come with any badge.
I don't know if it was a packing mistake, or if this card just doesn't ship with a badge (perhaps someone could clear this up), but in any case, is there any way I might be able to request or purchase one?

Sadly the really skipped badges some time ago Always loved 'em. In the old days vgas and mobos came with a badge like the classic "Geared by MSI" or the ones with the mobo series or "Multimedia" on it.
Would be so cool if those would come back.

  • R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC Dust Removal Technology boot noise

Hello, I'm interested in getting the 7850 PE OC, but the loud boot-up is holding me back. MSI released updated BIOSes for the 680 Lightning and 670 PE with a more quiet boot (available from the german MSI site, strangely not from the global site). Are there any plans to release a official BIOS with a more quiet boot for the 7850 PE?
If I would get the 7850 PE OC and flash a BIOS provided by Svet to reduce the boot up fan speed would my warranty be void?

once you have the card, then we can check its vbios

  • MSI NEW P.E. Series Video Card - GTX670 Power Edition 2GD5/OC with Twin Frozr 4

Glad to be back in the forum and I was been busy for awhile. By this time lots of PC hardware already came out especially from Nvidia. Just like today my share would be MSI's N670GTX PE 2GD5/OC video card.
First of all lets talk about the GTX670 GPU chip. This GPU is the younger sibling of GTX680 which uses the same 28nm GK104 chip but with one disabled shader cluster/core.The reference or standard GPU clock is 915Mhz with a turbo boost of 980 and as for the memory is concerned, it has a 256bit memory bus connected to a 2GB GDDR5 memory with speed of 6008Mhz. Just like with any Kepler based architecture, the card would also have all the goodies like "Adaptive V-Sync", "AA TXAA (Temporal Super Sampling)", supports "DX11.1" and improved 3D Vision Surround.
Moving on, let's check out now what MSI did with their GTX670 SKU based video card. The card is under a new Series named "Power Edition" (series comparison table below) and it comes factory overclocked from GPU clock of 915MHz to 1020MHz and Turbo boost of 980Mhz to 1080Mhz. It also comes with the 4th version of Twin Frozr Thermal Cooling design with a theme color of Black and Blue which matches the color of MSI's midrange to high-end motherboards as well. The dual 8cm PWM fan based cooler are equipped with Propeller Fan Blades which draws air better and now has the so called "Dust Removal Technology", basically as you startup your PC the fan will rotate counter clockwise for 30 seconds clearing the dust from the cooling heatsink. Adding a finishing touch, MSI equipped the video card with their Military Class III components ensuring the best performance, efficiency, higher overclocks and durability.

  • 20A 12v enough for R7850 Power Edition?

    Hi,
I recently purchased an MSI R7850 2GB Power Edition.
It's already installed, and I'm running Borderlands 2 very well. However, my PSU has only 20A on a single +12v rail. Is this enough?
When I ran BF3, I got white "snow" dots everywhere on the screen, but I'm not sure if this is related...
    Thanks for the help.

    Which driver do you use?
I ask because of the 12.10 driver does not run properly with the 7800 cards, but the 12.11 beta does

sorry it is German but you can see the photos.
Thanks for the reply! I tried the 12.11 drivers last night, and the issue is still there.
Here is a screenshot of my machine playing Witcher 2: http://postimage.org/image/6ew87dn85/full/ - If you look at the helmet on the right side, you can see a lot of dots. You can also see them on the character's clothes, and in the top-right corner (they look like circular outlines in this section)Pretty much everywhere! If I play on LOW setting, the dots are less strong, but still there.
Here is BF3: http://postimage.org/image/3kbhepavp/full/ - As you can see, the issue is pretty terrible on this game! It makes no difference what settings the game is on.
    To summarize:
Not the PSU (brand new Corsair)
    Not RAM Timings
Not the Catalyst Drivers or Mobo BIOs
    Not overheating
    Not the MOBO/CPU (brand new)
Thanks for the help so far, but any other ideas? I have a feeling this brand new card is faulty.

  • Audible fan noise even when idle.

    I have a 2.2Ghz Macbook 10.5.1 4GB Ram.
WHENEVER I use the laptop I can hear the fan. It is not loud just a constant low drone in the background. Enough to be distracting.
It is running at 1800rpm. CPU temp ~38oC, processor usage pretty much zero for ten minutes.
I only ever heard the fan on my old iBook when running intensive activities.
    Is this normal?

1800 rpm is the lowest fan speed, it is normal, however, there shouldn't be much of a sound except for a lil' wind blowing sound in the exhaust.

I recently bought the MSI R7850 Power Edition 2GD5/OC. I have installed amd catalyst 12.10. I have no issues while playing games...the only game i have played since i bought the card is prototype 2 (all settings set to high). The problem is while browsing or when not playing my screen flashes (just once - screen becomes black) for about 1-2 seconds. This does not happen regularly, but quite a few times.. i have uninstalled and re-installed the same catalyst version twice (downloaded from different sources - one from msi and the other from amd). The problem still persists.

However, I've also experienced a crash or 2 in which the screen goes black and the monitor goes to sleep. The computer doesn't wake up and I'm forced to do a hard reset. One such event was severe enough that I was unable to restore Windows 8 and had to do a full reinstall...!)

  • Why does fan spin for 1 second only? K7N2GM-1L

    Hi Guys,
First post here. I have read all the stickies and FAQs, but I don't seem to have found an answer to my specific problem. If it is here, and I missed it, please just point me to it and accept my apologies ( and thanks) in advance.
I have just put in a K7N2GM-1L for a friend who was struggling. When I hit the case power switch, the CPU fan spins for about 1 second, then stops. Nothing else happens. If I reset the power switch on the PSU (i.e. set from 1 to 0 then back to 1), I can repeat this process - but nothing seems to help get the board to progress onto POST.
I have tried with and without RAM. I have tried removing the power switch cable to the board, and shorting (briefly) with a screwdriver, in case the case switch was bad (same result). I have tried with no IDE drives, all IDE drives, with and without the floppy connected. I have tried the board mounted in the case, and outside the case (on a non-conducting surface) - always the same result.
After a lot of head scratching (I normally consider myself pretty competent inside a PC case, and have installed / upgraded / fixed numerous PCs) I realised I had done something pretty dumb. I had been powering the board with the BIOS reset jumper set in the RESET position. I know, I should have checked first, but I didn't :(
The manual says that this will *damage the board*, but does not give any further details. Does anyone know whether this is the real showstopper, or is it just a generally bad idea and there is still something else that I have not checked?
I see from many other posts that the PSU is pretty critical to these boards. I have tried two separate PSUs - both from known working systems. Specs are below.
    Jeantech 400W
    +5V = 35A
    +3.3V = 28A
    +12V1 = 15A
    +12V2 = 17A
    -5V = 0.3A
    -12V = 0.8A
    +5V SB = 2A
    Jeantech 500W
    +5V = 40A
    +3.3V = 30A
    +12V = 18A
    -5V = 0.3A
    -12V = 0.8A
    +5V SB = 2A

Yes, having the cmos clear jumper in the wrong position can damage the motherboard.  I don't believe that it is an automatice thing to happen since I have done the same thing a time or two myself without any resulting problems
How many times did you try to start the system with the jumper set wrong?  That may give us the answer since multiple tries might have been too much for the motherboard to endure.
Can you try the pieces in another system to verify if they are all good?  If they check out, then it is probably time to request an rma on the motherboard.
It would help if you told us what other pieces are in the system: cpu-memory-video card-hard drives-optical drives-pci cards as I are just guessing now.
I'm afraid I probably started the board with the jumper in the wrong position a dozen times or so, while trying various combinations of other possible faults before I realised the jumper setting was wrong :(
The system is essentially bare at the moment - just a floppy, a stick of RAM, CPU (Athlon 1800), onboard graphics, no monitor, no PCI cards.
Just to humour me for a moment..... if we assumed that no damage was done by the CMOS jumper setting, what else might be causing the symptoms described in my post above? Any thoughts?
