R7870-2GD5T/OC Radeon HD 7870 DisplayPort Failing

Windows 8, Not overclocked, using CCC drivers. I have DisplayPort hooked up to a monitor, and everything is normally fine. However, sometimes the screen will get complete screwed up / unsynchronized, and I'm not quite sure how to describe that better. Suffice it to say, it is impossible to see what is going on on the screen. I even created a shortcut on my second monitor to do a reboot, because the DisplayPort drives my main screen, and I can't get to the menu to shut down. It seems to happen mostly when video is playing, whether in a browser or from a file on my computer: browser ads, browser video (e.g., YouTube), downloaded AVIs/WMVs/FLVs, and even game video once. It doesn't always happen, and I can't predict it, but it happens almost every day.
Lastly, three times all outputs have failed. The second monitor is on HDMI, and I've had the outputs just fail and go black with some occasional flickering. Unlike the previous problem, where it appears the DisplayPort output is scrambled.
I've had the card for about 4 months; I'm not sure if it is eligible for RMA, but I'm going to be looking into it, unless I can figure this out. My last NVIDIA card drove these monitors fine, and I used the driver removers to clean up after them, so I'm not concerned about driver corruption.
I'd appreciate any thoughts and help.

When you re-installed the drivers, did you remove the old ones from safe mode using a program like: >>Driver Fusion<<
i used this tutorial http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news/2012/4/4/guide-how-to-completely-uninstall-amd-graphics-drivers.aspx
is that correct?

  • Extremely slow performance with Radeon HD 7870

    Hi,
I am using a number of Adobe programs on my new Windows 8 64 bit system, with 16 gigs of ram, an Intel Core i5 2.67ghz, and AMD Radeon HD 7870 2 gig. All the programs (including After Effects and Illustrator) work very well with the exception of Photoshop CS6 64 bit, which has extremely slow performance with Use Graphics Processor enabled in my preferences (which Photoshop selects by default). If I turn off Use Graphics Processor, the slow performance vanishes. If I change Drawing Mode to Basic, there might be a slightly detectable improvement over Normal and Advanced, but it's still horribly slow. The refresh rate seems to be just a few frames per second. Everything is slow: brushes, zooming, panning, everything.
I've tried changing the settings I've seen suggested elsewhere: I switched Cache levels to 2, history states to 10, and tile size to 128k. No effect. Photoshop is currently at the default of using 60% of available ram. Efficiency has remained at 100% throughout all my tests. Also, this slow performance has affected me from the moment I installed Photoshop; it didn't crop up after previous good performance. The problem exists regardless of the size or number of documents I have open. Performance is still terrible even when I create a 500 x 500 pixel blank new canvas and try a simple task like drawing with the brush.
Photoshop is fully up to date, and so are my graphics drivers (Catalyst version 13.1). Any help would be greatly appreciated; at the moment performance is so bad in Photoshop that it's unusable with graphics acceleration enabled. Thanks in advance for replying.

    Great news!
I followed your suggestion, Noel, and uninstalled my drivers with the Catalyst Uninstall Utility (which I hadn't used before), rebooted, reinstalled Catalyst 13.2 Beta 7, rebooted, deleted the PS Prefs, started PS, and now the performance is radically improved!
It baffles me why I would need to do a clean driver uninstall in a new system environment that has only ever had this video card, and is only a few months old, but that action seems to be what's improved the situation. Note that because I deleted the PS preferences, the good performance now occurs with the default Use Graphics Processor enabled, and Drawing Mode set to Advanced (with every feature in the Advanced dialog checked except 30bit display).
Having no reference point, I can't tell for sure if performance is as good as it theoretically ought to be for my system specs, but using the standard 13px brush is only slightly laggy behind the cursor, even if I become reckless and squiggle on the canvas violently. It wasn't just sluggish response before: Photoshop seemed to be in pain trying to draw the line segments as it laboured to catch up to the cursor. That is pretty much gone now.
Much more tellingly, zooming and panning the canvas is like it ought to be, responsive and clean, more or less like it was for me in CS4 with my old Nvidia 9600GT. The poor performance with zooming and panning was the most worrying aspect of the issue. It's a great relief to see these working more properly now.
I have to confess I'm a little embarrassed to have drug you through all this hassle only to discover that something as rudimentary as properly cleaning out the drivers would be the apparent solution. I never would have imagined that doing that, with such a new and stable system, would make any difference, since I don't have a legacy of older drivers dotting my hard drive. In any event, I'm really grateful that you guys took the time to try to help me.
In the interest of completeness, here's the relevant portion of my system info after doing the reinstall steps I mentioned above:

As you can see, the Microsoft Basic Render Driver still appears as a Video Card in the list. This presumably has something to do with Windows 8, and I really don't know if its presence here is still a sign that my card is not being used to its optimal capability. I have a hunch that the slight lag that I am still experiencing with the brush when Use Graphics Processor is on -- totally absent with the acceleration turned off -- implies that Photoshop is still unable to take maximum advantage of my card. I would assume that the brush tool should be more responsive with acceleration on than off, in a rig without any issues, but that's just assumption on my part. If you turn off Use Graphics Processor on your systems, is the brush tool more or less responsive?
But again, panning the canvas with the hand tool is now extremely responsive, without any screen tearing or visible lag, and that's a massive improvement over the total meltdown of performance I was suffering from before.
Thanks again very much for your help. I'm grateful to all of you who took the time to chime in.

  • R7870-2GD5T/OC fan constant stop and start in idle

    Hello,
I have an R7870-2GD5T/OC and I have the following problem with it:
When the Windows7 turn off the screen after x minutes idle time, the VGA card cool off, and turn off the fans completely. However, 0,5 seconds after the turning off he realize the card is too hot, and turning back the fans. However, after 2 seconds he realize the card is cool off and turn off the fans completely. So on.
This continues until the computer goin' to sleep, or the screen turn back.
The problem is the noise. The spinning fans are ok, the stopped fans are ok too, but this constant stopping-starting make a noise like boyracers at the red sign, very annoying.
I installed the MSI softwares, first checked the firmware update, but there is no update for the firmware. I tried to set the fan speed with the Afterburner software, and set to manually to keep the fans in working even at minimum temperature, but is didn't help. When the screen turn off, the VGA card goin to mad.
There is any solution for this? (behind the workaround to never turn off the screen)
This is an Intel i5 config, with 64 bit windows7.
    Thank you.

As GPUs can operate at quite high temps, have you tried setting your min fan speed, i.e. where the fans stop spinning to be maintained up to 60C and only then start increasing the fan speed from there?
What kind of other ventilation have you got in your machine? Have you got a fan on the side panel that can blow onto the GPU?
Does your GPU not have a switch to toggle between normal and LN2 settings?
If all fails, ask MSI technical if they have a different VBIOS for your card that prevents the fans from stopping at all.

  • XPS 8500, AMD Radeon HD 7870, TF2 Crashes

Team Fortress 2 crashes my XPS 8500. I have an AMD Radeon HD 7870. It always crashes, ALWAYS. There are wild audio and screen artifacts associated w/ this. Often the card dies and I get a message that the card failed but then recovered. The game whites out and must be forced to close. Sometimes I get some kind of computer lock, screen goes black, fans are whirring. Sometimes the crash is at game load screen, right after launch. Sometimes crash happens 10-30 minutes in. It always crashed this machine, but recently the frequency is off the charts. The machine is two years old. Dell replaced the GFX card once with a new one due to failure. I have issues on other games on very rare occasions but TF2 is a guarantee crash. The card is not OC and everything else is pretty stock Dell.  I'm in Win 8.1. I've tried:
Browsed Steam forums to little avail
    Tweak screen resolution
    Play in Windowed mode
    Lowered in game specs
Roll back AMD drivers ( this makes things worse for entire machine )
Turned ON Vertical Refresh + Open GL Triple Buffering
    Among other things
I'm running out of ideas.  Is this a power supply issue?

The EVGA 560 needs a 650W power supply with 2X PCI-E power connections. Card Length is not an issue with the XPS 8500.
That card Works fine in my Inspiron 620.
Getting the power adapters in after is impossible imho but you can plug them up BEFORE inserting and then carefully put the card in.
Here is a better pic with better wiring.
8.6 aka 9 inch cards are a VERY TIGHT FIT.  10 inch Cards are IMPOSSIBLE as are 12 inch cards. On Inspiron 620 or 3847

  • MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC i cant control fan

hi i buy radeon MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC,when i play games gpu fan speed is 35% and 3500 RPM+ 57 celsia max, trixx CCC and afterburner dont work, only in idle mode. any idea to fix ? or card is damaged? srry for my english,i am from czech republic.  same  problem  https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165740.0

Sugggestion on other thread was rma. If you configured everything right for manual fan control with Afterburner (>>How to use MSI Afterburner<<) and that won't work the controller is properly indeed faulty.

  • R7870-2GD5T/OC BIOS request

    Hi
I've purchased a R7870-2GD5T/OC video card with serial number 602-V274-090B1303059708.
I've been having problems using the card on a gigabyte B75M-D3H. motherboard. All other cards I've tried (5450, 6870, 7970) worked fine on the board, but the 7870 produces no video output. I cannot even go into the MB BIOS. I've updated the MB bios, but it hasn't helped.
I've tried using the MSI live update tool to update the graphics card's bios, but the tool doesn't display properly. I've since downloaded a bios from another user with the same card and used the ATI flash utiliy to change the BIOS. With this BIOS I at least get video, but my PC crashes before windows completely boots. I'm guessing I loaded an incompatible BIOS, and in hindsight I realise this wasn't a very smart thing to do...
Where can I find a compatible BIOS for this card? I  no longer have the original BIOS.
    Thanks in advance
    Regards

  • MSI R7870 2GD5T/OC Uncontrollable/Loud Fan

    Hi,
Yesterday I purchased an R7870 2GD5T/OC from a local retailer. I installed it and everything seemed fine, until I started gaming. Under load, the fans spin up to 4000+ rpm, even though the temperature sits around 50-55 degrees. It's incredibly loud and I'm afraid of wearing the fans down quickly.
I tried using Afterburner and CCC to manually adjust the fan speed. This works when the card is idling; however under load the card ignores all settings and hits 4000+ rpm. And while the tachometer in Afterburner shows the card spinning at 4000+ rpm, the Fan speed still indicates it at 40% speed (or anything I change it to).
I have so far re-installed drivers (with drivesweeper), rolled back drivers, re-installed Afterburner, and tested the card in another system. The problem persists, and there seems to be nothing I can do. I also tried running an old 6850 on my system, which runs fine, so I'm sure the software is not an issue.
As suggested in another thread, the problem might be caused by something in the BIOS. I have already flashed the BIOS once, however the problem still exists.
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Cheers,

    MOBO:  Gigabyte P55A-UD4P P55 1156pin USB3 DDR3 Motherboard

HSAF:   Coolermaster Hyper 212+ CPU cooler
OS:       Windows 7 64bit Home Premium
    No overclocking.
And yes, I did try the card in another system, and the same problem occurred - The fan would speed up to full, and become uncontrollable under load.
I also tried a HD6850 in my current system, and it ran completely fine.
This is what Afterburner shows when the card is under load.

    reflash to attached version
flash it by booting from USB key, then execute:
    atiflash -f -p 0 xxxx.BIN [ENTER]
where xxxx.BIN will be your vbios file
Will this UEFI update work for any R7870-2GD5T/OC video card, or is it safer to post the BIOS from my actual card?

  • On boot ATI Radeon HD 4200 drivers fail to load. To recover, must use System Restore

I have an HP Pavilion p6737f with Windows 7 64-bit. No error message. No changes to system.
When I boot the computer it comes up to a resolution of 800 x 600 which is the "rock bottom" of the spectrum for my computer. I check the device manager and it tells me that the driver - ATI Radeon HD 4200 failed to install on boot. In order to return to normal I have to do a "System Restore" to a time that I created. Otherwise, I can't use the higher graphic settings.

    Hi Tom,
Reinstall the video driver using the HP Recovery Manager (drivers only).  The driver on the hard drive may be corrupted and then Windows will use the default VGA driver.
