R7950 TF3 OC BE with 7950 PCB

Hi everyone. This is my first post so please go easy on me!
I've been gradually putting together a new machine over the last couple of months and finally got around to upgrading my 5850 card. I want to incorporate the new card into my water loop and fit it with a Heatkiller 79X0 waterblock. Having done my research, I know I need a card with a 7970 reference PCB for the Heatkiller to fit. So, after reading many comments about people ordering 7950 TF3s and finding they have 7970 PCBs, I ordered what's called a "3GB MSI R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE". I assume the BE bit refers to Boost Edition as there's a "Boost Edition" sticker on the box.
Anyway, I opened the box and unfortunately it has a 7950 PCB (with 6+6 pin power) so won't be able to take a Heatkiller block.
Have I just been unlucky and received old stock or is the "BE" edition different to the normal "OC" which, I believe, has the 7970 reference PCB?
Any help would be most gratefully received, especially if anyone can point me in the direction of exactly which version of the R7950 TF3 I need to order to be sure it has the 7970 PCB.
Thanks, guys!

Sorry to hear that. I've been searching for the difference between mine and the BE and now I know. Wonder why MSI reverted the design back to the 7950 PCB?

That's the one you need, and you'll find it at most major online retailers.

  • 7950 with 7970 pcb

Hello to the community! I am in the market for a new card and is eying the 7950 twin frozr 3 with 7970 pcb because I will be watercooling it. Is there any way to know by just looking at the box details that the card have 7970 reference pcb? Does it have a different SKU or does it have a particular serial number? Thank you and hopefully people can help me here before I pull the trigger since I already have the waterblock and it would be a shame if the card I get won't accept the block.

Hard to say. You can't tell with what PCB the card will come. Some say R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC usually comes with 7970 PCB but don't count on that. The new R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE is for sure changed to 7950 PCB (two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors) so pretty likely the whole linup will be or is already changed to 7950 PCBs. The only chance would be a R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC but as I said it is not guaranteed you get a 7970 PCB

  • Problem MB: G41M-P26 with graphic: R7950 TF3

Ofc both of them are MSI. This MB has integrated intel card which is working fine. After this radeon is added POST never pass, and picture is never displayed. I can't hear one beep which mean OK
When I remove radeon all working fine like always does before. Tried with different graphics and everything is ok, which means that PCI-E port is ok. Also I updated MB BIOS to last version which I found at download section for that MB. Tried with 3 different PSU which last is 650W.
Processor is Intel E6500 2.9Ghz  if that even matter.
This is full name for GK model:

    880MHz Core (Boost Clock: 960MHz)
    3072MB GDDR5 5000MHz Memory
    Any help/suggestions ?

    Hi and welcome.
The motherboard PCI-E slot is v1.0
The graphics card is PCI-E 3.0
Most of the AMD PCI-E 3.0 graphic cards have backward compatibility issues.
On older motherboards I always recommend Nvidia graphic cards.

  • You better release the 6800 with red PCB...

... because, for modders who have your Neo2 series boards (FIS2R) it would look better.
im not putting a green card into my computer, that'd look shitty as hell. black would be okay too, since my theme is red/black right now. so think about that! uh, and not just because of me haha. but your FIS2R boards are modder boards (NB fan, red PCB), so you should implement this into your graphics card line too. pleeeeze?
    Mobo, red
    memory Heatspreaders, black
    Sound Blaster, Black
    9800XT, Red
    case, black/silver

Well, my sound card is black, my motherboard is black, my memory heat spreaders are platinum. So a black video card would be sweet, but I'll live with green or red.
AOpen make their video cards mostly on black PCBs. They are very good overclockers too- in fact their GeForce FX range is very under-rated.

  • MSI R7950 TF3 - Strange fan noise

Hi, recently my 7950 (Twin Frozr 3) started to do quite strange noise when at higher fan speed like 70%+, in 4 months it worked like a charm and now it's making a really strange noise.
I never heard a fan do a noise like this actually, it's hard to describe: it's not like a rattling sound but more a "squishy" one. I applied some pressure to the fan and it faded away, but would like to know if it's better if I ask for a replacement?
    Thank you for your help!

I would, it's under warranty, why put up with a silly noise that isn't supposed to be there.

  • 7950 reference design?

I purchased a MSI R7950 3GD5 twin frozr back in January, I also purchased a pair of Swiftech Komodo water blocks for said GPU my intension was always to crossfire eventually, I purchased another MSI R7950 TF but this time it was a OC/BE version, this arrived today. A previous search on this matter had led me to believe that the OC/BE was using the reference 7950 board, however the one that arrived today has the 7970 board with the 6/8 pin PCIe sockets, This has now been RMA'd, today the retailer has restarted listing the original vanilla Twin frozr (800mhz), in theory the same as the one I purchased in January, they only had one left so I purchased it.
My original board was a V276 ver 1 . The one that has been RMA'd was V277 version 1.
    So my questions are:-
    1. Are MSI still making any 2x6pin PCIe boards?
    2. The Twin Frozr Cards have Military class components whereas the standard cards are sold as having solid capacitors, I'm reading something into this, should I? Or is it hype? Cooler is immaterial as they will be watercooled.
Hopefully the card that arrives tomorrow will be 2x6 pin, but if not, any suggestions.
    Andy

The R7950 3GD5 you already have is NOT the same like R7950 TF 3GD5/OC BE you got later as the new one is a Boost Edition model being a totally different vga. It always uses a 7970 pcb.
Because R9 series arrived 7950s like all 7xxx Radeons are ending production. So considering production MSI most likely doesn't make any 7950. Currently there are clearance sales for all remainders.
None the left even the none-Boost Twin Frozr 7950 sometimes came with a 7970 pcb and most were disappointed when 7950 pcbs (2x6 pin) were used more often. If you want that 7950 pcb a R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5 currently for sale should be your best chance.

MSI uses Military class electronic components. These are tested and verified to last longer even under bad circumstances. As you are getting better quality components for the almost same price of a reference card  a Twin Frozr is a better deal.

  • Differences between R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC and the Twin Frozr III Model

I notice that the R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC has reference design cooling compared to the double fan Frozr III 7950
It is also clocked 50mhz slower!
My 7950 (Frozr III) also has 7970 PCB with 6+8 power connectors...
What other differences am I missing here? Which card is better... in your opinion
Frankly given these huge differences I am convinced that the single fan/slower clock/ 7950 pcb are all reasons to say that the Frozr III is better

with those 2 cards here are the differences:
R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC has a single central fan on it and will run slightly hotter as it has a more limited capacity to move air through the fin array (would also expect it to be more noisy as that fan will spin faster all the time in an attempt to cool the card down). now clock rates with the same GPU on this to the other are subject to how good the GPU sample can handle it and as this one has stock power delivery its is restricted automatically to the standard stock max voltages so unless the GPU is very good it will be limited alot more then the equivalent R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC in theory.
R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC has a twin fan cooler that moves more air volume (it will be quieter as the fans can spin slower while suppling the required air to cool the GPU down) and as a result it will run cooler under operation at load especially (less heat and a lower chance of damage long term to the connections under the GPU). the board has heavier power delivery to the stock so it can handle more voltage supply with less droop compared to the other but again its subject to the individual GPU sample on the card and how it responds to an over-clock <--- but in theory if the GPU you have on the card is good it should be capable of much higher stable clocks and voltages to the reference PCB version on the other card just due to the fact it has alot more to deliver to the core (but its up to the GPU to how it reacts to it as its all random lately "silicon lottery time") and even if you run it at the stock levels it will still be alot more stable long term as the power delivery will not be being as taxed all the time as the stock type.
here is my own personal opinion of the 2 in conclusion:
R7950-2PMD3GD5/OC - OK this is cheaper but I would doubt how long it would last long term before it gave up and I would also expect it to get very hot compared to the other and more loud under load.
R7950 Twin Frozr 3GD5/OC - with the twin frozr i would expect it to be cooler as it runs, quieter too and the power to be more stable and as a result it would be a longer life card that will last a longer time after the other would have gave up.

  • MSI R7950 voltage locked?

Hello everyone, I recently added a R7950 Boost Edition, one with a 6+8 pin board to my system for crossfire.
I was able to set core to 1000mhz and mem to 1575 at default voltage which is 949mv for my card. However, I was trying for 1100mhz core to match my other 7950.
Using Afterburner, it allows me to change the voltage to 1100mv, but what I'm seeing is a bit weird.
In the GPU voltage graph, I'll see spikes that go up to 1100mv when I sit there and watch it while in Windows.  When I test using Heaven or playing games, the voltage only goes up to 1.088 throughout the whole Heaven session even though I set the voltage to 1100mv.
Even when I leave the voltage at default 949mv, Heaven and games go up to 1.088.
I can't get the core past 1000mhz because the voltage never goes above 1.088 no matter what I set it at during games or Heaven and causes the apps to crash.  However like I said above, if I set my voltage to lets say 1200mv, I'll see single spikes in Afterburner go up to 1200mv.  During load, it never goes above 1.088mv.
I've tried all this in Crossfire and by using the MSI card alone, the voltage just wont budge :/
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Don't know. Ask MSI: >>How to contact MSI.<<
There is nother vbios supporting more features than current vbios TV277MH.380 you provided. To have backup simply flash it on the bricked one. If you can boot your system with onboard/integrated gpu or you have an old spare vga for display boot with the R9 280x switched to the bricked vbios and flash the vbios with your saved one.
That's great. Do you a link to this other vbios please?

  • MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr V2/OC BIOS update

Have there been any BIOS updates compatible with my card? Perhaps adding Boost or (more importantly) Windows 8 UEFI features, or bug fixes? My BIOS is dated 2012-05-24, and I very much suspect there have been updates with Win8 features since that date. My card is the MSI Radeon HD 7950 Twin Frozr V2/OC, which I believe is the second revision of the MSI Twin Frozr HD 7950 line, before the Boost editions. It is, I believe, the only model in the line which used an HD 7970 pcb instead of an HD 7950 pcb. I would appreciate the latest BIOS, and if it wouldn't be too much trouble, a changelog?
My BIOS, which I have captured using GPU-Z, can be found here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/jeq0pt
    S/N: 602-V277-05SB1205142483
Also, if I do choose to flash, which position should my dual BIOS switch be set to?
    Thanks very much.
Edit: Wow, got my serial number completely wrong the first time.

I have a UEFI GOP (Windows 8 Feature) vbios for you (attached):
Decompress the attached .rar archive with Winrar: http://www.rarlab.com/download.htm
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (200.rar) and put the included file (TV277MH.200) on that stick.
Rename TV277MH.200 to 200.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive provided on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 200.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • Ok i finally decided what i will order with my new mobo. Pls tell me what you think...

Ok i got the 875p neo Fisr pcb 2.9
    I have a p4 2.8(800) atm , but im thinking of ordering a 3.0 or 3.2 since i dont overclock much...
Decided to go with kingmax ramm unless someone saiys else i got a reply earlier that someone has this and it works. only thing i worry is they dont come in a duel kit so im gonna order 2 from prolly a bulk load... pc3200 kingmax . newegg has them for 80 a pop. 512 meg a stick. one thing that worries me is they are rated at 2.5 volts and if needed to crank them suckers to 2.7 then i might change the memory order if you guys think that will be a problem.
Got a bfg geforce 600gt coming from best buy for 399.(434 w/tax.)
Gonna get a vantec 520 watt psu, has oveer 25 amps anthe 12, has over everythng LOL.
I dont know what bios this new mobo is so i am wondering if after i install all if i should flash to the latest bios or not to worry about flasshing??
Woot im finally getting close to ordering , only thing i might change is no pcu if you think a 32. from a 2.8 wont make a bigg difference , or if you think the kingmax ramm rated at 2.5 volts might give me a problem . Im afraid to go corsair or very low clas like 2. these are 2.5 . Im my last board the pcb 1.0 after i bios flashed from somethng ( i dont remember which i had i could no longer run in ultra turbo)Ohh ye i had 1.92 b at that time. but for some reason it worked . My only concern is that i wont be able to run in ultr turbo, i could still run in slow on my last mobo but i lost scores in all benchmarks. Well well see what happs this time.
Ill let ya know . thanx for all of you that replied.

the neo lsr or fisr should be great boards . mine kicked butt until i messed with it and i guess the flashing which i did correctly on my board didnt undo when i went back. So all with a pcb 1.0 if it works, dont mess with it. LOL . Worked great and was very fast .
I hope the new pcb 2.0 is just as good.
ohh that was geforce6800 gt not 600 LOL. Sorry im tired been up and stressed over what i should order...
    Im out .
    Peace !

  • Evaluating Ultiboard with Multisim

I am currently evaluating Ultiboard.  My only experience with designing PCBs is using ExpressPCB.  Using Express PCB I could easily connect vias and the trace would snap to them.  With my evaluation version I can't even use the connection machine.  Is this feature disabled?  Follow me doesn't allow me to connect two vias either because it avoids everything on the board.  This leaves me with using the line tool.  That's fine, but it doesn't snap to the vias.
How can I be 100% sure that the trace connects both vias?
Is there a node testing feature that will highlight everything that is connected to something that I select?
Why doesn't my connection machine work?
    Why is print disabled?
Why did the tear drop feature only work once and now won't finish the remaining vias I have added?
How do I perform a final check to make sure that the design is ok?
    Thanks.

When you are manually routing your board and want to go to a different layer, press F2 (this switches to the previous active layer) or click on the desire layer in the Design toolbox, Ultiboard will automatically place a via for you.
The connection machine is active only if you have a netlist, you need to select Place >> connection machine and click on the ratsnest to use this feature.
If you are not able to control where to pace traces, change your grid settings.  Edit-->Properties-->Grid and Units, where you see Component grid, there is an arrow in thisfield, click on it and you will see 4 options, I like to set them all to be on the same grid size with a small grid step, this will give you very good contol.
    Answers to your questions:
    1.  If you see the trace on a via, they are connected.
    2.  There is a connectivity check under Design>> connectivity check, you have the option to check 1 net or the entire design.  You should always use this at the end of the design.
    3.  Connection machine and follow me router only work if you have a netlist, Ultiboard needs to know what pin connect to each other.
    4.  I see the problem for via, the pad seems to allow you to use the teardrop feature again.
    5.  Your final check should include DRC and connectivity check both options are under the Design Menu

Well im thinking of buying it soon and custom pcb PWM plays a big part for me. More then cooling.

  • K8N Neo2 Platinum with 512 MB or 1GB DDR? Which amount do you suggest?

Looking for personal experience and feedback as to whether or not its worthwhile to go for 1GB of DDR rather than my current 512 MB DDR. Also if there is a correlation between stability and DDR ram amount, I'd be interested to hear of it.
If my PC is the following:
    1. Enermax CS-656-TA ATX case (Case fan, USB x 2 , audio I/O, Firewire x 1, temperature readout, fan speed control and 350 PSU all for only $77!! Of course, I used the 350 PSU in my fathers PC and for this PC I'm using the PSU below)
    2. Enermax 420 watt noisetaker PSU (one of the most efficient) One case fan that came with and one Antec automatic with thermistor
    3. MS XP Pro upgrade with SP2
    4. MSI K8N Neo 2 Platinum socket 939
    5. AMD64 3000+ winchester 939 CPU (to be isntalled using Artic Silver)
    6. OCZ Premier Dual Channel 2 x 512 MB PC3200 DDR (OCZ4001024PDC-K 2x512M PC3200 Kit 2.5-3-3-7)
    7. ATI 9700 Pro AGP video card (I plan to underclock it when not in use for 3D games. I may upgrade to a 9800 Pro (preferably R360 core) or a 9800 XT or nvidia 6600GT. Whichever video card I get, I'll be underclocking it when not playing 3D games etc.
    8. Mitsumi 1.44 MB floppy and card reader via USB 2.0 (only card reader is USB 2.0 connected)
    9. Seagate 7200.7 200 GB SATA HD x 1 (may keep WD 80 GB EIDE but no need)
    10. LG 4163B DVD RW - EIDE
    11. Plextor 24/10/40 CDRW - EIDE
    12. Adaptec 2930U SCSI card;
    13. Pioneer 303S SCSI drive and; (dormant. Won't be used except to test and compare its read performance with the other two drives before selling)
    14. Umax 1200S SCSI scanner
    15. Onboard sound, apparantly not great
    16. Onboard LAN, nForce 3 LAN is ok but second LAN I'll not use it
So how much difference would I see with using 1 GB of DDR memory vs 512 MB? For what applications?
    thanx

  • Help for PCB Stack up and MicroVia Ultiboard 7

    Hello,
i need some help with my PCB. I will design a 10 Layer PCB with micro-vias and buried-vias. I asked my PCB manufaturer for a matching PCB stack-up and
    for the design rules.
Now I need micro-vias from the top-layer to the inner 1 layer and from the inner 8 layer to the bottom-layer. That works fine, i can choose it in the board settings. But, I need also buried-vias from the inner 1 layer to the inner 8 layer, and there is my problem, because I can't choose it. Have you guys
any suggestions how i can solve this problem ???
    Many thank's to all...
    Manuel
