R9 280x artifacts

I have weirdo artifacts.
Like this
And like this:
I have used 13.12, 14.4 and 14.6 catalyst driver. No luck. It is a quite popular problem of all r8 280x vendors. How can I fix it?
Also, in trying to fix glithing I have done a little bit mess with my vbioses. Can I get original/updated versions of legacy and hybrid vbioses for my videocard?
My s/n is 601-V277-38SB1401099243
GPU-Z screen:
System specs:
PSU TR2 RX 550W (I have borrow 650 watt corsair PSU for testing purporse from my friend and still had issues)
P.S. VRAM is not damaged, I checked it whole night with video memory stress test. Temps with GPU/memory burning with Kombuster is nearly 80 with no issues, artifacts, glitches.

Copy current vbios to file upload it somewhere and add a link.

4.) Be aware that gpu-z screenshots or what gpu-z reads out as bios version are NOT of any use for identifying the required vbios version. While it doesn't hurt to add those when S/N and an actual copy of the vbios are also supplied simply just adding screenshots or version readouts will not get you any further and us having to ask for the required informations.

  • MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming artifacts and freezes

I just bought a 2 month old MSI R9 280X 3G Gaming card. After I installed the card my PC didn't POST, so I went into the bios and resetted everything to default. Then again my computer didn't POST. I checked the bios switch on the graphics card, it was set on position 2, I switched it to position 1 and my computer booted into Windows. I installed the catalyst drivers and started to play some games. It went quite bad, I had artifacts, game crashes and overall bad performance.
I read out the bios version on switch position 1 (the one that does work), this is ver. 015.040.000.000.003435. I flashed the bad bios version on switch 2 which was version 015.040.000.003.003435 with 015.040.000.000.003435.
After the flash I was able to boot windows on switch 2. Still I do have performance issues with games, like artifacts and game crashes.
    My S/N is 602-V277-38SB1312093272.
Can you guys help me out with this?
    Thanks in advance!

Alright, I tried to flash my bios to E7681.430 with the USB DOS tool available on this forum. After my computer booted the USB stick, I was prompted to do a memtest. It hanged, so I wasn't be able to memtest before flashing.
I download the last version of memtest86+ 5.01 and tried to memtest test 5 and 7 for 20 loops, it passed with 0 errors, so it seems my system is stable. Then I copied your provided BIOS to my USB stick and tried to flash it with M-flash in my current BIOS. M-flash wasn't able to recognize this file, so I won't be able to flash it.
So with not be able to pass memtest (only my own downloaded memtest86+ v5.01) from the MSI Bios Flash Dos tool and not be able to flash a new bios with M-flash. I'm not sure what to do next, I won't try the Windows flash option, because of this https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=177335.0  topic.
On the other hand I looks like I need to update to version 4.3 for me being able to use the r9 280x card.
Can you give me any advice about what steps to take next? Thanks in advance.

  • MSI R9 280X - Severe artifacts

    Hello,
I bought a R9 280X 3G BF4 some time back and I had some artifacts in crysis 3 so I dismissed it as a game specific issue.
But, recently I got LOTR: Shadow of Mordor and the game displays some very serious artifacts making the game unplayable. The game works perfectly on my other PCs, so I used graphs from MSI AfterBurner & GPU-Z for troubleshooting and found out that the artifacts appear only when the VRAM usage crosses about 2GB.
Its getting very frustrating as I am unable to use the full 3GB VRAM and even lower-end cards can run games better. Please help me in getting this issue resolved.
note: I tried running the GPU in a different PC & I got the same issues.

When booting my computer in UEFI mode, occasionally, my monitor does not wake from sleep and the screen remains black until Windows takes over and the login screen displays. This seems to usually occur after the computer has been powered off for more than 10 minutes. Sometimes this never happens, the screen remains black the whole time, and I need to hard reset. Sometimes it boots fine.
This black screen / no signal issue also occurs far more frequently when attempting to resume from sleep. I strike a key on the keyboard or hit the power button while the computer is in sleep mode, the computer wakes up, but the monitor never turns on. This forces me to either hard shutdown or reset in order to restore graphics.
In addition, I have a Razer keyboard that shuts off its backlight when the display is turned off, and it remains off when this problem occurs. This likely means that there is a problem with the card, drivers, or something else, rather than cabling. I might just RMA if we don't get anywhere here.
Perhaps a good first step would be ensuring that my card is flashed with the latest vBIOS. Can you send a link to that?
I'm also wondering if ULPS might be interfering, even though I am not in a CrossFireX setup.
Other than this MAJOR issue, the card works fine when playing 3D games. Though, I had major issues with video artifacts when playing 2D games or doing anything else simple (web browsing, moving windows) because of the absolutely terrible decision to underclock the past couple generations of AMD cards so much that the GPU can't function. I solved this by modifying an OverDrive profile to raise the idle clock to 850 MHz, but not overclocking at all.
    Thank you.
Meta discussion for the mods (feel free to PM me if you would like to discuss this further, in order to keep the discussion here on topic): sorry for not immediately opening up another forum topic when commenting on this issue. Every single other community that I've been a part of prefers to keep users with the same problem on the same thread. In my experience, mods yell at people for opening up duplicate bug reports and duplicate issues far more than they ask people to fragment information across multiple threads, therefore making it difficult to consolidate information.

It could be a mobo issue, but all of the quirks seem to point to the card.
I do not recall if I tested the card in another PC, but I no longer have a second desktop to test with.
I do think I tested an NVIDIA card on a separate Windows install with this build though. No issues there if my memory serves correctly. I've been troubleshooting this issue for months, and I'm becoming tired of this stubborn problem, so the attempts at problem-solving are becoming blurred.
    vBIOS is attached.

  • I'm next with the MSI fan fault! ( 280X )

Last night I was getting artifacts in Arma 3, yet at first I thought it was something to do with the latest settings. But turning on my computer today I noticed my graphics card wasn't as loud as it usually is at 60%.
Turned it up to 100%, barely made a noise.
Opened up the computer and sure enough one fan wasn't going around, gave it a slight tap and it started spinning again. So much for 100% fan speeds and mining, ay MSI? Not sure what I'm going to do as If I send it off I'll have no graphics card to use and thus no computer. Need something to keep my autistic mind occupied. These damn MSI cards should be recalled as defective
My card has NEVER been used for mining, never had over 80% fan in gaming and never over 60C, this goes against the claim made by MSI for all the failed fans. If it does it again tomorrow, it's getting returned

At least you can RMA it.
I bought a 280x when they first appeared here and after finding a link to a msi page with a pdf with instructions on how to replace the fans on a MSI page and mention of them allowing customers to replace the fans themselves I thought it would be worthwhile to get rid of the fan grinding noise and slowing mine has developed.
After contacting MSI using the support request on my registered items page I was told MSI don't deal with end users in the UK so I'd have to contact the retailer I bought from (who are a msi authorised seller).
I was just about to buy another MSI 280x for crossfire but now I'll look for a Gigabyte, who have a UK rma centre with a few days turn around so I will actually get warranty support without having a fight on my hands and having to pay to send a card internationally.

  • Artifacts on screen. GOP/ UEFI VBIOS request GTX 770 Lightning.

    Hi
So some background first. I bought a refurb certified MSI lightning 770. But had troubles with it right off the bat. Artifacts would pop up on screen even while PC was booting. And then while on desktop, the display driver would suddenly crash. Really didn't know what to do. So I went to tech-power up to see if Flashing a bios would help
It sorta did. But now like whenever there's a sudden vibration on my desk the driver crashes again (happened just now too while i was typing. Seems like it doesn't even need vibrations :|) Not sure what the problem is. But to pinpoint that I want to have the absolute correct BIOS (Both original and LN2).
    Here's my serial number: 602-V283-11SB131011531
Here's the vBIOS the card shipped with (had to change extension to attach)

    Hi
That's what I assumed too. However the first system I tried was on a friend's. It had the exact same issues as mine. his system is and MSI z97 gaming 3 with core i5 4590 and corsair 600W bronze PSU.
I then tried it on mine, and I'm facing the same issues.
From what I've seen so far, when my casing is lying flat on the ground, the card seems to work. But whenever the casing is upright, I face issues (windows boots in 8 color mode even).
Is there something wrong with the card's pci connector then? I have other cards as well (another MSI 770 OC and gigabyte 280x) and they don't have any such issues.

  • MSI R9 280X Gaming Edition Overheating

I have a pair of MSI 280X cards, one is rev 1.1 and the other rev 1.2 and I use these together for mining. I bought a third card as I was impressed with the thermal performance and noise of the cooler. The first one that arrived had artifacts so this was sent back to the e-tailor and a replacement sent out (both rev 1.2). This also had artifacts so was sent back again. A replacement was again sent out (a rev 1.1) but this time it doesn't artifact but just runs very hot. When gaming on my first two 280X's, they reached about 70C max when gaming (individually). This third card runs at about 85C and is considerably louder as a result. Mining is a complete no-go, the card almost instantly reaches 95C and the AMD drivers crash- presumably due to thermal throttling.
I told the store I bought it from about this issue and they said I should send it back again. I have now received an email back saying that they could not find a fault with the card as it technically can game and mining isn't tested as it isn't strictly what the card was made to do. As a result, they are refusing to replace it and are sending it back to me. Do I have grounds for a replacement here under MSI warranty and should the store honour my right to a replacement? Whilst technically the card can play games which is why they are refusing to replace the card, the fact it runs so much hotter than my other identical cards and cannot even mine for more than about 5 seconds shows that clearly something is wrong with the card. What is the point of getting a card with a good cooler if 85C when gaming is deemed acceptable? Can someone from MSI please reply and perhaps help out my case with the store? I feel like I've basically paid a load of money for a card that is useless to me as I have an MSI 290 in my gaming computer anyhow.

as you are in the EU system all warranty service should be done VIA the reseller you bought the card from!
    >>How to contact MSI.<< <--- follow that if you want to directly contact MSI!
some samples of the R9-280x do run hot (some run at 75-80C max and others will hit closer 90-95C max and is just luck of the draw which set you have gotten) <--- they are lower Grade chips then Prior lines that they came from (HD 7970 chips where better Binned for heat output to be in a 5-10C range but R9 ones are not and may vary alot as a result in a 20C range)

Hello, I accidentally flashed a Sapphire BIOS onto my MSI 280x like an idiot and am scared I bricked it because now the driver is crashing and I'm getting artifacting. I also stupidly overwrote the original vBIOS with the sapphire so I beg of you to please help me out with my initial vbios. Card was bought with 15.40 on it, I tried flashing to another one linked here for : 602-v277-28SBxxx however my numbers at the end are different. If it's still crashing, does that mean it's bricked? Mine is: 912-V277-057
Unfortunately I cannot upload the BIOS as it was overwritten by Sapphire BIOS! And I cannot find it anywhere else...looking for 28SB bios.
Even though I tried naming sapphire bios like so: atiflash -s 0 sapphireoriginal.bin and : atiflash -s 0 original.bin it still overwrote the MSI original.bin! Gahhh.
    Any help appreciated! Thank you.

Just wanted to update that I flashed with legacy 304 that I found on these forums and all seems to be working great again. In fact, the temps are much lower, I'm assuming because the new bios fixed VRM overheating...used to run @ 80c now it barely hits 70.
Great job MSI! I suggest others also update bios if temps are too high.

I had older driver so I try new driver, but I have still problems.
I have another problem, when I uninstall driver and install new driver, PC dont see GPU so I must reinstall operating system, because how  I found out I must first install GPU driver then MB driver.

    Hi,
Are you able to test this card in different PC? - No.
Also you could update BIOS to v1.9 - I bought new PC with this components 7 months ago and there werent any problems with flickering and atrefacts from begining, so I dont think so flashing MB will help, but I can try.
Did you install MSI Gaming App? - No, should I?
What if you increase/decrease mem and gpu clocks in MSI Afterburner? - When I reinstal operarting system, I dont install MSI Afterburner again, I don´t played with setup, because I don´t know what I should setup and how much increase/decrease things- can you tell me?
So I install MSI Afterburner, there are my settings:
What about flashing bios of graphic card?
PS: So i read forum and found out that using MSI game app can help, but when  I use any of app mode I have always 300 MHz - why?
