Does anyone know if the latest BIOS is supposed to fix fan control options? I did get the bios but from 14.1 up I cannot control my fans. But the game Archeage is really buggy on 13.12 and my card runs pretty hot before the fans start up.

    thx!

    Use the attached.
Create a bootable usb stick (https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=165175.0).
Then unpack the previously provided archive (161.rar) and put the included file (TV308MH.161) on that stick.
Rename TV308MH.161 to 161.rom. Put the atiflash.exe also included in the archive on the USB stick too. Now boot from the stick.
Type atiflash -p -f -noaper 0 161.rom [ENTER] and let it flash the vbios.

  • Msi 290X Gaming Bios question?

I just got a used 290X Gaming for $350 off Amazon. Do the 290X boards usually already come with a UEFI bios or will I have to request it?
    Thanks....

The 4G Gamings Bios switch is at the top of the card near the external connectors, the uefi mode bios is the "2" position on the switch, which is toward the rear/power connectors position. Its a pretty tiny switch so make sure your careful and have a good light.

  • R9 290X Gaming VBIOS Request

I just bought a brand new MSI 290X Gaming 4G and I have no control over fans, the msi GamingApp seems to have no control either.
    SN:602-V308-06SB1403000948

    Hi,
Is anyone able to clarify some or all of the BIOS issues/info?
My 290X Gaming is exhibiting some stuttering issues.  I have read through several forums over the last week and determined that a BIOS update has resolved this issue with brands.  So, after more reading, I've ended up here.  This is certainly disconcerting.  When one spends over $600 on a video card for the 'Best' you'd hope it's not a 1/2 functional kludge.
I tried the 160 BIOS and lost fan control with the card set to Legacy Mode Switch Position #1.  GPU-Z showed a different version than with the card set to UEFI Mode Switch Position #2.  Position #2 shows the old BIOS version and the in this mode the fans are controllable.  As well, in position 1 which seemed to be the new BIOS with the loss of fan control, the whole computer seemed funky and ultimately the screen would go black and I'd have to shutdown and reboot.
So are there typically 2 separate flashes?  One legacy and one UEFI?  Does one have to flash the card in both switch positions?  I was of the understanding that position 2 is locked and position 1 is for flashing.
Would someone kindly elaborate on all this?  I couldn't seem to find the info here.
    Also, there seem to be 4 BIOS here;
    http://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/index.php?manufacturer=MSI&model=R9+290X
    Obviously 2 are 1030MHz and 2 are 1040Mhz.
For each speed, it shows versions
    VER015.042.000.003.000000 f1040.h02
    VER015.042.000.003.000000 u1040.h02
So, what is the difference?  Is one supposed to be Legacy and one UEFI?
Again, some insight would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

Hmm?  Wow.  That's odd that something IS indeed different enough that those BIOS doesn't work on your card but does on mine.  There must have been some revisions made on the physical board or something in the firmware hardware or something.  ??
How old is your card?  I just got mine in the last 3 weeks and though stock can sit around at suppliers for weeks, experience dictates that because stock is a 'revolving door', often the actual age of a component is somewhat relevant to when it is purchased.
I simply wouldn't try the Lightning BIOS for many reasons.  Good advice and good to know either way.
I'm not willing to risk an expensive card but I've read of others who have flashed an HIS and Powercolor to an ASUS BIOS.  Wonder if things like that are possible and what are the potential implications?  I do have an old(er) 7970 than may be a good experimental device.

    Mine is SLIGHTLY different...
Edit: I managed to flash V308MH.111 over V308MH.160 but it black screened as I got into Windows.. Since our cards have the same release date I thought maybe they were the same after all...
Edit2: I know it sounds like a no brainer but don't EVER EVER flash a lightning vBIOS on the gaming edition, screen wouldn't receive signal anymore. I managed to reflash the stock vBios thanks to MSI's genius 2-bios switch solution :D
Edit3: I tried flashing MH.100, same as 111, black screen in Windows

No, your vbios is not too old. It is the latest UEFI vbios (TV303MH.102).

Having a lot of issues with my cards and they run very hot under full load (85-95c) even with side panel off of my case and a 200mm fan blowing on them full speed in a room with ambient temps at 66F, I can forget about putting the cover on for now as even with several 140mm fans in the system and positive pressure my temps go way too high!!

    second card s/n:
    602-v277-26sb1310102773
Please let me know where to get it and what utility to use! I need to have this taken care of before I run out of time to take them back if they are defective.

yes already began that process, they suspect possible bad TIM and suggested I replace the TIM:
Under a burn in test you'll experience temperature levels reach 80C, these are normal temps and is considered within the cards tolerances, 85C and higher is considered running a bit too warm, You may try testing each card individually under non-crossfire to confirm if both are cutting off the system, also confirm temps with both, If you're knowledgeable in video cards and heatsinks, you may carefully remove the heatsink assembly to add a fresh layer of thermal compound, this should alleviate some of the heat to get the cards running cooler, providing no physical damage is incurred, warranty will remain valid, you may also warranty the cards and MSI will fix or replace.
You can use Arctic Silver 5 or IC Diamond, either is suitable to use. Unfortunately there is no information available about the heatsink assembly/installation so do remove carefully.

If you are looking for a UEFI / GOP Vbios for your video card here are a few things we need and there are a few things you need to know.
1.) Vbios versions vary with-in models. This is due to different variations and improvements made in time. In order for us to be able to get you the right VBIOS. We need your serial number. The serial number can be found on a sticker on the bottom of your card or on the box in which it came.
2.) Don't use a vbios provided to another users. Just because you have the same model, doesn't mean you need the same vbios. While flashing the wrong vbios is recoverable, it is still more work. It is fine to post in that thread with your serial number asking if you can use that VBIOS.
3.) If we need to check if thier is a more recent version. We can check your Vbios in one of two ways.
A.) Upload a copy of your current vbios somewhere and give us a link. You can save a copy of your vbios using >>GPU-Z<<.
B.) You can also just use NVFLASH >>Download NVFLASH for windows<<
    Syntax:
    nvflash /v >rep.txt [ENTER]
This will copy all of the information we need into a txt file you will fine in the folder in which you placed nvflash.
4.) Be aware that gpu-z screenshots or what gpu-z reads out as bios version are NOT of any use for identifying the required vbios version. While it doesn't hurt to add those when S/N and an actual copy of the vbios are also supplied simply just adding screenshots or version readouts will not get you any further and us having to ask for the required informations.
