• High parsing with Siebel and Oracle RAC 10gR2

Hi all,
I'm working for a company that uses Siebel 8 with a 2 nodes RAC 10gR2. 70GB SGA with assured minimum values for shared pool 16GB, 50GB db buffer cache and the rest distributed among the other pools.
In the last weeks we are facing a very annoying issue in our production system, at random times we have a very high concurrency peak with contention events like:
- cursor: pin S wait on X
- latch: library cache
and a performance problem as a consequence.
I have read all the documents on metalink about these types of waiting events and how to troubleshoot it, but I can't get rid of this problem.
We have dynamic SGA configured, but we haven't had any resizes in the last weeks.
We didn't have many "version count" for query, we are about <40.
In the AWR I have noticed that we have very high parsing (in most cases query execute=query parse). We have talked to our Siebel support team to propose them the use of CURSOR_SHARING=FORCE, but they told us that it's unsupported.
We have increased the parameter session_cached_cursors from 50 to 1000, but in the last days the problem has even got worse.
I suppose that the solution could be reducing the parse count and elapsed parse time, but without changing the CURSOR_SHARING parameter and not much help from Siebel support, I don't know how to achieve this.
Does anyone have any idea?

The only way you can reduce the number of parses is to fix Siebel (in other words - not much you can do).

• Using Oracle SE RAC 10gR2 or 11gR2 on NetApp NAS

Hi,
I'd like to know if Oracle certifies Oracle SE RAC 10gR2 or 11gR2 on NAS storage like NetApp FAS2552A dual controller, 24 x 900 GB SAS, 8x 10GbE + 4x 1GbE, 7-
mode, iSCSI, CIFS, NFS, FCP.
I have read some documents by Oracle and, in my opinion, it seems that the best approach is: NetApp NAS with iSCSI.
Reading NetApp documentation it seems that NetApp NAS has a proprietary protocol to manage storage (ONTAP ?).
Is the NetApp approach to manage storage for Oracle RAC a certified solution ?
Thank you very much

I run Oracle RAC on NetApp without any problems. I suggest you work with NetApp. They will be able to answer questions about their specific hardware. They also have documentation on how to configure their disk solution specifically for Oracle RAC databases.

• Ocfs2 and the certification with Oracle

Hello @all,
I'm wonderíng when the certification (linux x86) is done.
And more when the certification with x86_64 will be done.
Which release is actually in the certification process?
Is it ocfs2 1.0x, 1.1x or the new announced 1.2?
If one is certified, can we use the newest like 1.2x and have still oracle support?
OCFS2 is nice and we would like to use it for our production databases. But we must be sure to use the correct version with oracle support.

it looks like it will happen on 04/21/06 ;)

ORACLE SUPPORT AND CERTIFICATION
OCFS2 1.2.1 has been certified with Oracle 10gR2 RAC on Linux x86 on RHEL4 Updates 2 and 3. Customers can download the packages from here.
OCFS2 certification with Oracle 10gR2 RAC on Linux x86 on SLES9 is currently in progress. Once certified, the binaries will be made available by Novell in a kernel update.
OCFS2 certification with Oracle 10gR2 RAC on Linux x86-64, Itanium, Power and s390x is currently in progress.

• IBM's GPFS for REHL4/5 and a single instance (non RAC) 10gR2 environment

I've looked high and low for a clear support statement of IBM's GPFS for RHEL4 or RHEL5 in a non RAC 10gR2 implementation. Does anybody have a pointer that would explain Oracle's support or lack there of?
Thank you,
Martha C.

For RHEL O/S level issues, there would be no support. You would need a ULN support license for generic O/S questions and you would need to switch to OEL.
For non-ULN customers with a database CSI, O/S level support is provided only on issues specifically related to the OCFS2 or ASMLib packages; for generic O/S questions you would need a ULN license.
Perhaps folk over in the DATABASE forum could clarify Oracle's RDBMS support policy for this environment, but succinctly: no O/S support without a ULN license, subject to directly-related OCFS2/ASMLib issues.

• PATCH Oracle RAC 10gR2 DB on Linux

Hello,
I want to patch 2 node RAC 10gR2 DB (Standard Edition) on SLES 11. I have patched signle instance DB with OPATCH, but never patched RAC DB, kind of very nervous. I am not able to find generally and also from MOS regarding step by step process to patch RAC 10gR2 on SLES OS. In the readme of the Patch, I do not find step by step detail of how to ....regarding RAC. Following is the information regarding the current setup, please have a look and suggest/help me, as it's a production DB and I'm little afraid to Patch it.
I've also other general questions please, like:
- In RAC, how many homes are normall there to patch? DB,CRS, Grid?
- Clusterware (CRS) and ASM has same home?. Are they same?. Pathing any one means pathing both ASM and CRS, right?

Hello,
Thanks for the reply.
What I noticed before that as ASM-GI has same home, so I need to apply one patch for that. After your reply I am planning to do it like that only.
As I have posted in my main post the versions of patches to apply for Oracle Home. That seems somehow clear to me what to apply and, etc. Can you please suggest which Patch or how to find/select next patch version to apply to ASM/GI home please?
When we select PATCH ADVISOR from MOS, for example in case of DB home, I select DB,Enterprise,Standard editio,9i,10g,11,d, OS Linux-x64,10.2.0.4. DB,OS version etc is OK, but I am confused what to select from that first drop down menu in order to select patch version for ASM/GI ??
@onedba
I am planning to Patch not upgrade.
Thanks and regards.

• Java application (tomcat) and Oracle RAC 10gR2

Hi, I have an Oracle RAC 10gR2 (10.2.0.3) on Suse Linux Enterprise Server (3 nodes).
I have several application running on tomcat 5.X and tomcat 6.X with java 1.5 and java 1.6. Sometimes, because of hardware fail, network problems,... one of the nodes fails, and then the other 2 nodes still working and my database is up. However, the most of applications lose the connection with the database, and I must to restart the tomcat. I want to have a system more reliable and robust, and I want to prepare the tomcat's and java application for prevent it. I have read the http://drdobbs.com/java/222700353?pgno=1 and http://db360.blogspot.com/2007/01/is-your-java-application-failoverproof.html. I've been tried the example of the first url, but I don't connect with my database. However, I've probe the sample on another oracle rac (10.2.0.4) and it works. In the samples, it use the ucp.jar (11g) and ons.jar (10g) and ojdbc6.jar (11g driver).
Anyone can help me how can I configure my application for I must not to restart the tomcats??
Thanks you very much!!.

The best solution for your problem is ORACLE SUPPORT.. Please raise an SR and coordinate with them.. GoodLuck!

• Raw devices versus Cluster File Systems in RAC 10gR2

Hi,
Does anyone using cluster file systems in a RAC 10gR2 installation, specifically IBM’s GPFS?
I’ve visited a company that is running RAC 10gR2 in AIX over raw devices. Why someone would choose to use raw devices , with all the problems to administer , when all the modern file systems are so powerful? Is there any issues when using cluster file systems + RAC? Is there considerable performance benefits when using raw devices with RAC ?
I´ve always used Oracle stand alone instances over file systems (since version 7) , and performance was always very good. I´ve tested raw devices almost 10 years ago , and even in that time (the hardware today is much better - SAN , 15K rpm disks , huge caches - and the file systems software today is much better) the cost to administer it does not compensate the benefits (only 5% more faster than file systems in Oracle 7).
So , besides any limitations imposed by RAC , why use raw devices nowadays ?
Regards,
Antonio Belloni

Hi,
spontaneously, my question would be: How did you eliminate the influence of the Linux File System Cache on ext3? OCFS2 is accessed with the o_direct flag - there will be no caching. The same holds true for RAW devices. This could have an influence on your test and I did not see a configuration step to avoid it.
What I saw, though, is "counter test": "I have tried comparing simple file copies from an OS level and the speed differences are not apparent - so the issue only manifests itself when the data is read via an oracle db." and I have no good answer to that one.
Maybe this paper has: http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/linux/pdf/Linux-FS-Performance-Comparison.pdf - it's a bit older, but explains some of the interdependencies.
Last question: While you spent a lot of effort on proving that this one query is slower on OCFS2 or RAW than on ext3 for the initial read (that's why you flushed the buffer cache before each run), how realistic is this scenario when this system goes into production? I mean, how many times will this query be read completely from disk as opposed to use some block from the buffer? If you consider that, what impact does the "IO read time from disk" have on the overall performance of the system? If you do not isolate the test to just a read, how do writes compare?
Just some questions. Thanks.

• Hardware (storage) consideration for RAC 10gR2?

Dear experts!
We have to implement availibility for our database at a customer - RAC 10gR2. We don't have really high database workload and large amount of data (max. 30 GB).
So I would prefer a 2 node RAC. What are the requirements for such a "low level" RAC - specially for storage? The two nodes are in different rooms so I need 2 "storage devices" to be safety against fire.
We have to use:
- OS: Win2003 or 2008
- Oracle Standard Edition --> ASM
So could you please give me praxis tips about hardware consideration (components needed)?
Thanks
Markus

jymarkusg wrote:
Do you mean if I have a two node cluster and one node fails my whole cluster is offline? In comparison to a three node cluster this works how? Could you please give me more detailed information about this? No, that's not what I meant. I was talking about potentially split brain problems. 2 nodes looses communication with one another. How does a node now know whether it is at fault, or the other node? Does it restart or not?
That said - one of the RACs we have, is a small 2 node RAC. And I bet there are many more like that out there. So it used. However... I would prefer to have at least 3 nodes.
One problem for example is failover load. Simplistic example. When 1 node fails, its processes fails over to the other node. Assuming an even spread of all processes, the other node now gets a 100% load increase. This can be nasty if the remaining node is not fully able to deal with that increase. In a 3 node setup, the remaining 2 nodes would have dealt with an easier managed 50% load increase.
I don't agree with you that linux is cheaper - it depends on the customer's infrastructure. It doesn't make sense to run a linux server in an only windows environment with only windows administrators! And oracle is available for many platforms, so this restriction shouldn't be a problem.People can learn. In fact, I would expect that administrators would want to expand their knowledge. That is IMO not the primary deciding factor. Linux is by far more a capable o/s in the cluster environment. One only have to look at the top 500 clusters in the world. 443 of these are running Linux. That is 88.6% of the biggest and baddest clusters in the world. How many are running Windows? A measly 5 clusters.
No comparison. No contest.
Dataguard was already in evolution - but therefor I need oracle enterprise edition. RAC in standard edition is for free (with the limitation of 4 nodes and 4 cpus - but this should meet our requirements :-)).Never done a SE RAC. Even our small 2 node baby RAC is a TB database. Creating a RAC for a 30GB database..? I'm not sure what the expectations are. This is really a minute database and can be full cached in server memory. Can easily be virtualised (and with that, fallen over between machines). So ito of performance, scalability and even redundancy, there are a number of other options besides RAC.
For interconnect I would use gigabit as minimum.I personally recommend using Infiniband. GigE is at its maximum. Ceiling has been reached. IB QDR is now available and provide 40Gbit pipes. When running IPoIB, you can have 65K MTU, aka super jumbo frames. Or, using Oracle 11g, you can use RDS instead which is a lot faster than IP.
As far as I see the biggest problem is the storage...Ito costs for a low cost solution, yep. Especially when only needing a few GB of storage as oppose to a few TB. And instead, the money spend on this, could perhaps be far better spend on a virtualised solution.

Rober,
SBT backups are not automatically removed by ORACLE. Only disk based backups that are in flash recovery area are automatically purged.
You need to delete them manually as in DELETE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE DEVICE TYPE SBT;
However, the good news is: your RETENTION POLICY is respected by SBT backups, so you do not need to specify "SBT-only" retention (unless you want to).

• Application Certification With APEX 10G XE

Hi all,
Has anyone implemented Application Certification to the application developed in Oracle Application Express 10G XE? My requirements are:
Accessibility - check against WCAG and Section 508 guidelines
Usability - check against Usability.gov and W3C guidelines
HTML standards - check against W3C HTML, XHTML and CSS standards
Browser compatibility
Can anyone help me implementing these things? Please do reply if its not feasible too. Thanks
With Regards,
Sunil Bhatia - Programmer
Eon Technologies Pvt. Ltd.

That's quite a lot to handle all at once if you've no previous experience...
Start with the easiest:
HTML standards - check against W3C HTML, XHTML and CSS standardsThere are online HTML and CSS validators all over the place.
There are also lots of Firefox plugins available. One we have made use of is Total Validator as it also includes accessibility recommendations and spell checking. It's also available as a standalone program on some platforms.
Accessibility - check against WCAG and Section 508 guidelinesThe (often questionable) output of the online accessibility tools is useless if you don't know how to interpret what they are recommending – and often more importantly whether it's actually useful or not. The best resource by far is Joe Clark's book Building Accessible Websites, available online to read for free. (It is – perhaps surprisingly given the subject matter – one of the most readable books about the web available.)
Usability - check against Usability.gov and W3C guidelinesNot an area I'm very familiar with. If you're going to do it right then you need to perform proper usability testing, probably by engaging a specialist usability consultant.
Browser compatibility1. Code to standards.
2. Define browser support requirements, allowing for graceful degradation in less supported browsers.
3. Test test test.
The latest UK Government guidelines on browser testing have met with support in the standards community, and provide good advice on how to proceed.
You then need a test environment that provides all the browser versions you are going to support. This is complicated because certain vendors don't make it easy to install multiple versions of their browsers simultaneously, or you might have requirements to test several browser and OS version combinations. The best approach to this is to use VMs: they're isolated from your developer/organisation builds, so you won't break anything internally; you can build up a library of test environments as browser and OS versions change; they're disposable if they get hosed by hacks (e.g. to install multiple browser versions).
