Hello all.
Does anyone know of a hardware certification matrix or list for using Oracle RAC? I cannot find it anywhere, any I am always questioned about it.

As i already achieved the advance certification of RAC, additional whether i need to take 2 handon courses to eligible the ocm exam ? Please advise. ThanksFirstly there are 2 OCM exams currently (excluding upgrade exam) .....
ie 10g DBA OCM
and 11g DBA OCM
The courses you present must be relevant to the exact version you wish to to take.
Please bear in mind any hands on course submitted and accepted as submitted for obtaining DBA OCP cannot also be used for DBA OCM.
I am a little worried that an OCM candidate cannot find the information, though perhaps [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=159#3] does not make it clear. [http://education.oracle.com/pls/web_prod-plq-dad/db_pages.getpage?page_id=244#5] does make it clear, however this may be too difficult for OCM candidates to find without better links.

Oracle RAC Validated Hardware

Hi Frens,
Just has a simple question, if anybody knows.
Is Oracle RAC Version 11.2.x.x compatible with HP DL 380 G6 with Pillar storage, if not..are thier any plans to test the RAC on DL380 G6 on a Pillar storage ?

Oracle doesn't really certify against specific hardware. They certify against Operating Systems and require that the hardware is supported by the OS vendor. So I can only assume that it is supported.

RAC Installation ---- Hardware Requirment Doubt

I have to install 10g RAC at home for learning purpose. I have two PC's with same version of
linux (Oracle Enterprise Linux 32 bit each) installed, but having different hardware. One machine is laptop and
other is desktop. So, will it be possible to install RAC on these machines. Is it a pre-requestie to have same
hardwre at both machines.
Please give your valuable suggestions.

You can istall RAC with the combination of Desktop and Labtop. You need NIC cards for both the Machines. You need shared storage. for that You can use either scsi disks or fireware disks. To use fireware you need fireware slots on both the machines. There are two ethernet cards you need one for Private interconnect between the nodes and one for Public. and you need switch, Then you have to connect the shared storage in fireware slots. You need to install the clusterware, before that you can use Openfiler to partition the disk or anything to partition the disk for ocr and votingdisk etc. Then you can install the ASM for Filesystem and Volumemanger for disk and Fra group. Then you can install enterprise agent if you want to use enterprise manager grid control. Then you can install software.

Oracle RAC or Hardware

Our product uses an Oracle database that is running at 90% CPU on a Sun 440 box. I am looking for ways to solve the CPU bottleneck. I can either go and invest in hardware like 880 or go the cluster (RAC) route. Most likely it will be two instance install for RAC. Any pointers?

With or without RAC you will sill need to add additional CPU's to eliminate the bottleneck. For instance, if you are CPU bound with a single 8 way box, you would still be CPU bound on two 4 way boxes running RAC. If you have a couple of the 440's hanging around then RACing those together is an option, but still may require purchasing some additional hardware (Extra Network Cards, Switches, Shared Storage...etc)

RAC Storage Options ( Openfiler or Wasabi )

Hi RAC gurus..
I need your advice regarding storage options for our RAC development environment.
Since it is a development environment so management is reluctant to invest in SAN , Our production is a 2 node RAC on windows 2003 server mounted on Dell SAN.
We have two spare servers available with Intel Xeon processors and SAS disks on them. SAN is out of question here and since we are on windows we cannot use NAS.
I was reviewing the storage options and came across to Openfiler and Wasabi Storage Builder softwares which can transform your server ( spare ones ) into virtual SANs for shared storage purposes.
I want to know if its reliable, scalable and whether it can be put to production one day or not? Which one is better Openfiler or Wasabi ?

ISCSI Recommendations for RAC Setup

My company is interested in setting up Oracle RAC for back-of-house processing (all traffic would be internal...no client facing apps or anything) and are looking to do so by using an iSCSI shared storage device. We are currently using the Dell MSD3000i in an Oracle fail-safe solution, but I'm not 100% confident that it will be able to handle a RAC setup. Has anyone out there had any experience using this device with RAC? Any recommendations out there from someone who has had good experiences with a similar device?
The vision for the current setup is having a two-node RAC with two quad-core servers running Windows 2008 64-bit with 32 GB of RAM each. We would be running Oracle Standard Edition.
Any feedback given would be much appreciated.

1) Oracle does not certified hardware, but Oracle RAC certifies storage technologies as Fiber channel, SCSI and iSCSI. Please take a look to: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/certify/tech_generic_window_new.html

Oracle 9i RAC

Oracle claims that from a functional perspective, Oracle9i Real Application Clusters is equivalent to a single-instance database. I understand that it means exactly that. In a cluster of several servers, multiple Oracle 9i databases on the servers are seen by the system as a single instance if RAC is deployed. Hence, in the case of high-availability application, any server failover is quickly covered by the surviving servers. Does this applies to any OS that RAC can be deployed upon? An Oracle/Compaq Account Manager told me that currently, RAC has to be deployed in conjunction with TruCluster technology on True64 Unix from Compaq, can this feature works(multiple Oracle databases are present to the system as a single instance). I do not believe him. Can anyone confirm that? Thanks in advance.

That Compaq salesman is trying to sell you a more expensive(but better) solution. Compaq has ORACLE RAC certified solutions for Windows 2000 and SuSE Linux for a couple of their Proliant servers.

However, keep in mind that the True64 is the only cluster solution that can run on shared file systems as opposed to shared raw devices. HP, Sun and IBM can't do it.

All,
I am following all about HANA modelling and other related topics. Now, i am concentrating for the hardware part.
Does SAP HANA requires separate hardware than that of existing ECC hardware? I mean can ECC instance & HANA run on same hardware or always it is required to run HANA on separate hardware?

How to manually add RAC Resources

I have been experimenting with RAC on 10gr2 database running on Oracle Enterprise Linux 4.
I lost the disk that contains the OCR, which was not mirrored. :(
I reinstalled Clusterware successfully, but when I ran crs_stat -t I see gsd,ons and vip but not the database resources for the two nodes (instances,listener,database service).
These resources were registered automatically when the DB was created using OUI and selecting cluster installation
How can I use crs_profile and crs_register to manually add/register these resources?

Validated conf certified supported configurations

Hi All,
Right the vendor here I am trying to get rid of is scaring the client and raising an interesting point:
I am building a new system on the hardware we own but are removing from their data centres.
The client here wants the solution to be certified. (not just supported that is a must of course)
the metalink note Certified Software on Oracle VM [ID 464754.1] says:
"Going forward every product running on Linux and Windows released by Oracle is certified and supported on Oracle VM." and then lists some minimum versions (all of which we are higher than so that is good)
but the previous vendor says that because the hardware is not on the (very small) oracle vm certified hardware list OR on the validated configurations list then the HW platform is not certified and therefore the solutions will not be certified.
Can someone tell me exactly what is the truth here?
the Hardware by the way is:
IBM - DS5100 (DS5000) SAN
IBM - X3650 M3 (servers)
IBM - HS21 & HS22 blade servers

RAC database Migration

Hi Experts,
I need some advice related to the Migration of RAC database, we have to migrate several RAC & Single-Instance databases from existing HP Itanium servers to Superdome2.
Initially I thought of going with "addnode" for new Servers as additional Nodes to the existing RAC database then remove old Nodes for RAC databases migration, but there are some limitations in our evironment,
1. There are no free IP addresses available to assign to new nodes from the existing IP segment.
The IP Range (1 - 255) is divided into into several small segments of 16 IPs in each segment, and the segment in which the existing 2Node RAC DB is completely occupied and there is no free IP Available.
If the new Node have IPs addresses from different segment in the same Subnet(IP Range) can it be added to the existing cluster?
and if we cannot find any IP in that Subnet then can the nodes with the IPs from other Subnet be added to the Existing Cluster?
2. To add a node to the existing RAC cluster, the new node should be exactly same, OS version, OS Patches...
Our existing rx Itanium servers have "*HP-UX 11.31 Mission Critical Operating Environment*" for One 2 Node RAC Cluster and "*HP-UX 11.31 Enterprise Operating Environment*" for for another 2 Node RAC Cluster, but the HP Superdome 2 will have the Latest "*HP-UX 11.31 Data Center Operating Environment*"
Can we proceed if there are some diferrences in OS patches...?
Please see the Existing Environment Details below:*
Prod 1 DB *2 Node RAC Cluster* :
Hardware: rx 8640 Itanium Server
OS: HP-UX 11.31 v3 Mission Critical Operating Environment

I am struck by your post with a couple of thoughts.
1. Even though high availability appears to be something you are willing to invest substantial money in obtaining ... no one think patching important.
2. Even though you've spent a substantial sum of money on hardware and software ... no one thinks networking important enough to address the lack of appropriate network infrastructure.
Personally: I'd advise refusing to do the work until management makes the very small investment necessary to doing it correctly.

Adobe's System / Hardware requirements

As I have mentioned for years, and with many Adobe Products, they need to get "real" with regard to minimum requirements.
OK, so Adobe will sell a couple fewer units, BUT think about the units that they do sell, to the poor folk at the lower-end, who then find that PrPro will not edit, PS will not work, etc.
When I mention a 3x SATA HDD setup on the PrE forum, the users cite that the min. is stated as an 80GB EDIE, or similar. Yeah right. Like that will allow more than just the installation of the program. Import a 15 min. DV-AVI, and you are hosed! Adobe, which I love, needs to get real, and temper the Marketing-types here. They need to be made to listen to the engineers, and change these specs.

Certainly it can be imporoved by "Customizing", but considering that Dell touts Adobe (and specifically Adobe CS5) as being a a system ISV-Certified partner, shouldn't Adobe require Dell to offer by a simple click of an icon, at least a minimum system that will actually run Adobe CS5 and Adobe Premiere CS5 (the above link came from a full page ad on the back cover of a Video magazine.)
Since CS5 has some very serious hardware requirements, I feel Adobe must be on the CUSTOMER's side when it comes to its partners using its Trademarked named products -- and not rely on the "good will" of the sales people who pick up the phone at its ISV-Certified hardware partners who may or may not have the knowledge (or desire) to ensure that the machine they sell will actually run Adobe CS5, and specifically Adobe Premere CS5.
