RAC-Firewire OCFS hangs

Hello
I have installed 2 nodes with Redhat AS3, FireWire and OCFS.
Before install Oracle Software (RAC Software) I'm doing some tests. First, I can create an ocfs partition that is visible and usable from 2 nodes. But when I reboot one of them, and the start time (initializing iee1394 controller) the other hangs.
I'm desperate because I follow the Werner Puschitz document to configure it but it doesn´t work.
Any ideas about this problem?

thanks in advanced.

Hi Yuan,
Thanks for your reply:
We are using the following hardware:Belkin Firewire Internal Pci Kaart Met 3*6Pin Ieee1394Ports
Maxtor HD 5000XT/250GB Personal Storage USB2 + FWire 5400rpm external. The Maxtor has two firewire adapters; which saves you a hub.(Unless you want to setup more than two nodes)
About the hangcheck timer:
I have used the one which is downloadable from OCN.
When i try to "make" i receive a kernel incpatibillity error. I have changed the makefile (let it point to my kernel sources), but unfortuneately no luck.
For now i will use the standard watchdog timer which is part of the installation.
Kind regards Hans

  • Create database on RAC environment - DBCA hangs on clone database creation

    Hi, friends!
I have two vm´s (vmware 2) with OEL 5 installed.
I´ve installed OGI and database software sucessfully. So, my crs stack is working fine in both two nodes.
However, when i use DBCA to create a database in this RAC environment, it hangs when it gets on "clone database creation", about 52% of the progress bar.
My DBCA logs don´t point any error out. It just hangs on..
I wait about 4 hours and it doesn´t move on.
I searched and found many cases like that, including here in OTN. But it seems nobody could find a resolution to this issue.
Is there any bug about OEL 5 and database 11gR2??
    More details:
I apllied the patch "p8670579_112010_LINUX" on both OGI installation (before root.sh) and databae software install (also before root.sh).
    Everything worked fine.
    Sorry for the grammar errors.

you can trace dbca, and you can found witch step is occurs problem.
can you paste here last 15-20 sentence of dbca trace file?

  • RH2.1AS FireWire OCFS database creation issue

I have 2 nodes configure with firewire device and ocfs. Firewire device mounted and oracm started on both node. Database creation looks fine from alert log file. When I try to startup from either node I got ora-0439: feature not enabled: Real Application Clusters. Is any one running into the same problem or just missing some step from my end?
    Garry

I find the option 'Oracle9i Real Application Clusters' under Enterprise Edition Options. As long as OCM is running, I don't know why you wouldn't see it...
Regarding gsd and srvctl: as far as I know they weren't deprecated or anything with 9.2.0.3. If there's something else you're supposed to use to start and stop nodes and/or the whole cluster I'd be interested to hear about it. Anyway, gsd and srvctl have been working fine, even after patching to 9.2.0.3.
For what it's worth, we gave up on OCFS (for now). We're using RedHat Advanced Server 2.1 Developer's Edition, and the kernel update (2.4.20) from www.ocfs.org. We spent a lot of time trying to get OCFS 1.0.8 to work but were never fully successful. Most of the time we couldn't run OCM on more than one node. Occasionally it worked, but then Oracle would report strange IO errors at the system level. After we switched to using raw devices on the shared firewire drive everything worked perfectly. We're going to wait and see what further OCFS development brings...

  • RHEL 3  - RAC - Firewire - Listener Not Starting

    Hi,
I almost got thru the howto install guide on the Firewire RAC server install, but hit a snag. During the TNSListener configuration, I see both server - run the config just like the instructions say, but it barks back that permissions are denied and cannot start the listener which maybe already started. I then try manually starting the listener using the lsnrctl start command - but the bloody thing still won't start.
Any ideas - I'm about to scrap the install and start over since I was planning on doing that anyway......

I also try a startup of the nodeapps using srvctl - here's the results I get.

  • Firewire disk hangs system

I have a new MacBook Pro (1.83 GHz). When I remove an existing Firewire 400 external disk from my PowerMac G5 and plug it in to the MacBook, the MacBook hangs. This is repeatable, boot after boot, whether the disk is plugged in at boot, or afterwards. I plug it back into the PowerMac, using the same cable and power supply, and it works fine. Any suggestions? I'll check back here, but a reply CC'd to ricst (at) usa (dot) net would be appreciated. Thanks!
    Ric Steinberger

Ahh... I think I see what the problem is, based on RandyS' suggestion about reformating. The Disk Utility allows 3 types of formatting. I had selected the Apple Partition Map, when formatting on my PowerMac, then I used a utility (SuperDuper!) to create a bootable backup disk. This is fine for PowerMacs, but apparently a GUID partition table format is needed when a disk partition is used for booting on Intel based Macs. So when I moved a bootable disk with an Apple Partition Map to an Intel system, I think that's what caused the hanging behavior. I haven't tested this, but I'm pretty confident this is what's behind the issue I've seen. Thanks to RandyS for the insights and help.

  • How to RMAN backup in RAC with OCFS

    hi,
Iam using RAC 10.2.0 in windows 2003 server with OCFS .. i want to take backup using RMAN utility. can any sugest me how take RMAN backup..
    Thanks
    harish

The only real consideration in RMAN on RAC is a one-off configuration issue as to whether the snapshot controlfile is written to the shared disk or not (it needs to be on the shared disk, or on a location that is common to all nodes, otherwise a backup that includes the control file will fail at the point a node tries to write it to a destination directory that only made sense to another node).
Otherwise, there's not a lot that's different about an RMAN backup in RAC versus non-RAC.
    Simple answer, as a result: open a DOS window, type rman target /, then type backup database;

  • RAC using OCFS on windows 2003

    Hi,
i am building a 2 node windows 2003 cluster (enterprise edition) and planning to install ORACLE RAC on it. What are the steps required to do this?. Do I need to use the Microsoft Cluster service to deploy a cluster and then install oracle rac on it. Or does oracle provide a clustring service on it own. Currently i have 2 servers each running windows 2003 connected together via a cross over cable.
What kind of configuration is reuired with the file system, OCFS or raw partition.
    thanks

I don't think MCS is required. Take a look at:
    http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14207/prewin.htm#sthref198
and check the certified combinations in Metalink.

  • CentOS 5, Oracle 10g RAC & FireWire ..??

    I have the following questions:
    1. Is Oracle 10gr2 "certified" on 64-bit CentOS 5?
    2. Is there any need to install the IEEE1394 modules for the FireWire drive?
Any other advise will be highly appreciaited.
    Thanks.

Basically, CentOS = Red Hat Enterprise Linux = Oracle Enterprise Linux
BUT, no it isn't certified. Various Oracle Aces have used CentOS with no issues. Have a look at http://www.dizwell.com/prod/ for more info.
    Dunno about Firewire sorry.

    Imran,
The information from alert log file is not sufficient.
Can you log switch on primary and monitor whether it is archiving in standby or not.
and you can monitor the changes in "v$managed_standby"
Also check for the errors using "v$dataguard_status"
    SQL> select error_cdoe, message, timestamp from v$dataguard_status where dest_id=<n>;

  • Solaris 10 x86 Install - Firewire Issue

    Greetings,
I am installing Solaris 10 x86 (03/05) and am running into a lot of trouble with the firewire drivers.
The first CD installs properly, but any subsequent reboot (to install other CDs or boot the OS) fails. By watching the boot messages on a boot -v, I discovered that the system hangs after loading the firewire drivers.
If I run the hardware configuration assistant during boot and remove both 1394 devices, I am allowed to boot - but only that once. Even if I save the hardware configuration and tell the hardware configuration tool to use it during the next boot (by pressing Esc and loading the profile), it automatically re-adds my 1394 devices and hangs. The only way I can successfully boot is by going into the hardware configuration assistant each time and removing the 1394 devices, each time. Removing the 1394 card is not an option, as this system boots other OSes for computer forensics via removable disk racks and the firewire is needed for these purposes.
So, my question is this - how can I tell Solaris to ignore the 1394 devices without manually removing them during each boot? And how can I get the hardware configuration assistant (the one that I launch by pressing Esc during the boot process) to actually use the configurations I've saved?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure what the root cause for the firewire driver hang is.
Maybe an issue with interrupt routing. You may want to experiment
with BIOS ACPI / IOAPIC / PnP OS settings, and/or the
    acpi-user-options property.
Anyway, to get rid of the firewire driver, you can probably add an
"exclude: hci1394" line to /etc/system and reboot.

  • Question to Oracle about 10g RAC

    Hi:
Does Oracle had installed 10gRAC on Redhat3.0AS either using ocfs or raw successful before the software got released?

It is indeed successful. We've installed 10g RAC with ocfs/ASM on different storage devices such as SAN's and SCSI disk arrays .

  • Installing RAC on External Network Attached Storage

Is it possible to use External Network Attached Storage device to install Oracle RAC?
It is much cheapter than to buy SAN or other devices.. All I am thinking it buying a External NAS enclosure and put a couple of hard disks in it and use it as NAS to store RAC database..
    any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Data Sheet

Since you only want to learn ... Google for RAC SCSI or RAC Firewire
Based on my experience, my suggestions and observations around RAC are simple
    1) Go straight to 10g, do not bother with 9i;
    2) If you are a competent Oracle10g DBA, RAC knowledge is a mininal upgrade in effort;
    3) 99.9% of the 'RAC problem' is from the hardware configuration.
I find that the RAC configuration issues are different for each operating system and storage subsystem combination I seen, and they have almost nothing to do with RAC. They are mainly about system, network and disk administration and making them able to handle a shared disk configuration. Once the stable shared disk configuration is achieved RAC is almost self-installing.
So, going cheap just to learn RAC is not going to provide much headway in the long run.
However, being able to say you've seen it is possibly worth while, and that can be accomplished very inexpensively using SCSI or Firewire disks. Do the web search - there are a lot of cookbooks.
Note though that Jonathan Lewis recently said, and I paraphrase: "A 2-, or even 3- node RAC is not really interesting. 2-node is a boundary condition, and 3 node falls back to boundary condition quickly. Detailed investgation doesn't happen until you have 4 or more nodes." And that requires a real configuration. Which is going to cost.
And no - I do not know anything about Z-SAN.

  • Firewire Drive hangups when starting recording

I was wondering if anybody has had any issues with their Firewire drives hanging with the beach ball spinning for as much as 20-30 seconds after record enabling a track and hitting the record transport button after upgrading to the new Studio version. (Never happened for me in 7.2)
The hard drive seems to function fine otherwise and disk utility doesn't see any issues.
It is intermittent and I can't seem to find the answer to this problem.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks for all of the help - I have been out of town and just got back to testing. I will make sure that I turn the setting in Energy Saver off so that it does not put the hard disks to sleep. I cannot access the Journaling setting for some reason on the firewire drive, and unfortunately it is formatted as FAT-32, since I was using it with a pc also.
Does the FAT-32 system make it slower? Sorry for the added question.
