RAC Install on Virtual Machines

Howdy....
I am trying to get first steps into RAC. I only got one Notebook to work with ... and since VMware works nice I figured ...I might be able to setup a two node cluster.
I wonder if it is even possible? (I am thinking of Failovertimes and such ...)
SO, you guys - would it even be possible to setup RAC on a single Notebook with everything - just to simulate RAC DB and maybe a client to simulate a productive environment?
btw. this aint too urgent ... this is only "homework" and in the sense ... I would also APPRECIATE any documentation on this subject ... all I found are these Links... (pretty standard)
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14207/crswin.htm#BEHIHBBF
http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/clustering/cvu/readme/cvu_11_linux64.pdf
any ideas?
cheers.
uhh .... before I forget ... VMWARE Player and Server 2008 and Vista /or XP are available

Can someone please outline why a VMware RAC has any
use at all ?
For testing I hear you cry ..... but it's not the
same since it's not supported at all ...
the only possible reason might be to get experience
installing.
But if you are getting experience trying to install
on something that Oracle has said they do not
support... is that not completely banging your head
against a wall....
Also there is clusterware testing. But if you are
not using real machines it is not the same - so why
bother ? verifying adapters/switches/link
negotiation/ SAN connectivity/cabling and power
cabling -pulling
still all needs to be done, so means you are wasting
time with VMware
Just my 0.05c.
ChrisI know what you mean .... and yes I am tryin´to waste some time ;)
Also:
i never had to work with rac at all - and I do would like to gain some experience in installing .... just a brain teaser ... and obviously I am having problems to do so .. muahahha because I failed ... I couldn t even setup a cluster under windows .... but i am guessing that that was my fault - I played with vmware so much that 2008 couldn t even format his new virtual HD ...*hihihii*
and also yes I am playing ORA11g on server 2008 and vista .... devlish grins
YEAH - I am bored as hell!!!!!!No work right now !!!!
And my boss isn t giving me any hardware ... all I have is this tiny notebook that I am tryin to fool into a rac system with oracle ... and I am gonna try until it blows up ! ;)
Do you have and idea's whatelse is fun that I could do? since I am a beginner and such ...

Chris in your Windows VM have you tried downloading and installing the Adobe Application Manager from https://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4773?
Also have you already installed the Adobe Application Manager on your host system of Mac OS?

    Hi mrCracker,

If I understand correctly , it is nested installation .
    Windows Hyper-v is bare-metal hypervisor  .
Please try to install win8 on real hardware then enable hyper-v to install VM .

  • 11g RAC install on virtual box hangs

    Host - windows 7 64bit
    guest - Oracle Enterprise linux 5.2 32bit
    Virtualbox 3.2.6
    Hi all,
I really need some help. I'm trying to install 11gr1 rac on Oracle Enterprise linux 5.2 32bit with nfs. The crs install goes fine, but when I want to install the database software, it just hangs, sometimes at 2%, sometimes at 45%. I can't open another terminal window or nothing, but the tick still goes black and white.
I'm using the following doc, and followed it exactly.I gave both nodes 1280 ram, 30 gig disk size, to grow as it's being used.
Any help will be welcome, I have been sitting with this issue for a month now, and have tried reinstalling from the os level numerus times.

    Hi,
as far as I remember VirtualBox 3.2.6 does not support shared disks, therefore it's not possibe to set up RAC on it.
3.2.8 supports shared disks, and there's also information available on how to set RUC up on it: [http://www.oracle-base.com/articles/11g/OracleDB11gR2RACInstallationOnOEL5UsingVirtualBox.php]

  • How to install Mavericks virtual machine in Parallels Desktop 10

Can somebody point me in the direction on how to create a Mavericks VM in Parallels Desktop 10 running on Yosemite?  I've upgraded to Yosemite with the thought that Bento would work just fine (based on a small amount of research) until I can get fully migrated off it.  Upon firing up Yosemite, Bento is unresponsive.  I know Bento is dead, but I still have data I need to reference for another month or two.  Setting up a VM of a known OS that works seems like it'd be a quick fix...

    Hi Király,
I can't find a copy of the Yosemite SLA on the Apple site using Search functions in the Support section of that site.  I tried all sorts of things including just a general "Software Licensing Agreement".  Got a list of sorts, not including Yosemite.  Do you have a URL?
    It's here: OS X (Yosemite)
The link can be found here: http://www.apple.com/legal/sla/
The SLA that applies in the OP's case, though, is the Mavericks SLA, since that's what he wants to install in a VM.
I don't want to confirm your comment re VMs, though, as an aside, I'd point out that Apple "invited" me to upgrade after I correctly made a Mavericks VM while running Mavericks.  I do want to read what the ruling would be on having Yosemite on an external bootable drive, given my internal drive boots Mavericks.
There are no licensing restrictions against having different versions of OS X on external bootable drives. That's fine. It's running OS X in VMs that is restricted. "The Apple Software" as defined by the Mavericks license, can be run in a VM, as long as the Mac computer that is running it is "already running the Apple software."
If Apple had allowed 10.9 to be run inside a VM with a different OS X version as the host, the license would have said this:
(iii) to install, use and run up to two (2) additional copies or instances of the Apple Software within virtual operating system environments on each Mac Computer you own or control that is already running the Apple Software, for purposes of: (a) software development; (b) testing during software development; (c) using OS X Server; or (d) personal, non-commercial use.
But that's not what it says, of course.

  • I have an iMac in which I installed a virtual machine to run some MS applications including MS Money. in virtual machine mode the computer does not recognize the USB pen which contains my MS money back up and therefore I can't import the data to the iMac.

    What should I do?

What virtualization app do you use ?
Parallels, VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox ?
For Parallels: choose Preferences form the Parallels Desktop menu -> then USB and set it to your liking.
For the other two it should be a similar procedure (don't use them myself).

  • I am unable to install Virtual Machines on my Mid-2013 MacBook Air

    Dear Apple Support Community,
I have recently moved away from a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro to a new Mid-2013 MacBook Air. As much as it pains me, I have a need to install a virtual machine running Windows 7 in order to utilize an application called vSphere. The vSphere web interface is too unreliable to use via any web browser, so running a Windows VM is the only way forward.
However, when using VMWare Fusion 5 (I know 6 is available, but I do not have a license for it) or VirtualBox (very latest version) I receive an error which states that my CPU is not 64-bit compatible. I was under the impression that since Snow Leopard (10.6) was release that Mac OS was fully 64-bit. My MacBook Air is currently running Mavericks (10.9.1). It has a 1.3GHz Intel Core i5 CPU.
I read that Apple restricts access to the EFI firmware settings, as I originally thought it was a case of enabling Virtualization capabilities on the processor. To further add to the dilemma my Mid-2010 MacBook Pro has no issues running VMWare Fusion or VirtualBox, so I am at a loss as to why I am unable use these virtualization platforms on my new Mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember reading somewhere that the new macbook air's from 2013 have a 64 bit core i5 4250u processors.
    Also intel mentions it here:

    Hi

  • Installing Oracle Apps on Linux Virtual Machine, but need patch "6078836"

    Hello Friend's,
    Hope you are doing well...!
I start my EBS Training in a functional role in less than 10 day's.
My dilemma is that i am having a heck of a time installing Oracle Apps on my machine. As recommended in many blogs, i've installed a virtual machine environment and then installed Linux Version 5 Update 5. Before i begins installing Oracle apps, the last step is to go to my oracle support "mos" and install patch 6078836, which i can't access. It seems to me as if that one should either have a paid oracle support account or be a part of an organization/company that has one. I can't get past the sign in page to install this patch and no where in these blogs does it say this.
Does anyone have this patch or has access to it or any knowledge or idea as to where can i find this?
As a back up i've started downloading Oracle apps for a windows server machine as well, in case i am unable to download this patch at least i have a back up. And the bad thing about this is the fact that i am in India and the bandwidth here sucks even with a 2 MB plan. With these speeds this 50 GB download will take another 3 to 4 days. And time is of the utmost importance for me right now..
Any help or suggestions will be much appreciated..
Thank you all in advance and hope that you have a great weekend..!

Does anyone have this patch or has access to it or any knowledge or idea as to where can i find this?Even though any of us has the patch we are not supposed to mail it as this violates Oracle support agreement policy.
There is no other source to get the patch and most Oracle patches (if not all) can be downloaded from MOS website.

  • Mirroring Arch install to a virtual machine

    Hi.
I have a workstation setup based on arch that I am very happy with so far. What I would love is to have the same setup available when Im not at my workstation. The solution I want to explore is to install a virtual machine running arch on my mac and then, using rsync or whatever, keep the system installed in the virtual machine in sync with my workstation. Like if, for instance, I install a package on my workstation it should be synced to the virtual machine. It doesn't seem to me like this would be too hard to get setup, but I'm not sure how much of the system can just be copied considering the difference in hardware settings.
Has anybody got a setup like this up and running? And/or any suggestions as to what would be the best way to achieve it?
    Thanks
    Peder

What you want to do works with snow leapard server,    I think the bastards crippled snow leapard client.
for a work around I am forced to use a usb network adapter and dedicate it to the nic.. this is not optimal.
Have you found a solution yet ?  I was going to try netorking kernel extensions from the hackintosh guys.

  • Why Linux command "rmdir" has different options in 2 Virtual Machines ?

    Folks,
Hello. I am installing Oracle 11gR2 RAC using 2 Virtual Machines (rac1 and rac2 whose OS are Oracle Linux 5.6)
I need to delete the directory /u01 that is not empty and has many contents in both VMs rac1 and rac2.
I use this Linux command: # rmdir -rf u01/
    [root@rac1 /]# rmdir -rf u01/
The non-empty directory /u01 is removed successfully in rac1.
But in rac2, this command is not working. Its error message is: r option is invalid.
I try the command: [root@rac2 /]# rmdir --help
Output: -p remove directory and its ancestors.
-v verbose output a diagnostic for every directory processed.
As you see, there are no "r" and "f" options in the VM rac2. But in the first VM rac1, "r" and "f" options work correctly.
    My questions are:
First, do any folks understand how to delete the non-empty directory /u01 in the second VM rac2 ?
Second, why the same command rmdir has different options in the 2 VMs ?
    Thanks.

  • Does Time Machine make complete backups of Virtual Machines?

I am new to the forums, so forgive me if this has been asked before.
I have a MacBook Pro and have VMWare Fusion 3 installed.
I have Windows 7 and XP installed as virtual machines, and use an external hard drive to back up into using Time Machine. I have been given conflicting information regarding the backups being created by Time Machine.
I have been told that I should use a Windows backup program such as Acronis to back up the Windows installations separately from the Mac backups on the separate hard drive.
Someone else has told me that if I use Time Machine, then the Windows installations will be backed up automatically, as the Windows installations are effectively folders and files within the Mac software.
Just to confuse things, I have read somewhere that Time Machine cannot back up Boot partitions of Windows installations, but I can't remember where I read this.
I don't want to lose my Windows installations through not understanding the backup capabilities of Time Machine, so I am hoping that someone here can advise me as to what the best course of action would be please.
Can I trust Time Machine to back everything up and to be able to restore my whole machine, including Windows installations, from a Time Machine backup, or do I need to back up the Windows virtual machines separately by using Acronis.
    Thanks
    Kevin

    1. TM will not backup a Boot Camp Windows volume.
    2. TM will backup a VM disc image every time it changes unless you have excluded it via TM's Exclude list.
    3. If the VMs change often then TM will backup each change thus consuming large amounts of space on the backup drive which is not recommended. Thus, it's best to backup VMs separately from within Windows using a Windows backup utility.
    4. TM will not backup individual files and folders of a VM disc image. It will only backup the entire disc image.

  • Remote Desktop Services Role on a Virtual Machine (VM) Requirements

Does MS recommend installing RDS Role on Hardware or Virtual Machine? I have a use case where I have about 35 people that will be using the Internet Explorer and possibly run additional piece of software. I'm having trouble determining if the RDS Role on
Virtual Machine will be able to sustain the load of so many users. Should the same performance metric used in hardware selection be appropriate to apply for Virtual Machines. We are using VMware on pretty powerful DELL hardware, which is also hosting
120 existing VMs as of now. So my questions is would VM with 4 CPU's, 8GB of RAM, 80 GB Virtual Disk and 1 GBPs NIC would be handle the job?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
There is no any particular requirement to run RDS on physical or virtual machine. But if you want to install RD Virtulization role then you need to see that Hyper- V role installed because “when the RD Virtualization Host role service is installed, Server
Manager checks to see if Hyper-V is installed. If Hyper-V is not installed, Server Manager will install it”. And Hyper-V role cannot be installed on virtual machine so for that you need to install on Physical machine. Other all RDS role can be installed
    on virtual machine also.
Install the Remote Desktop Virtualization Host Role Service
In addition, please check below articles.
    1. Remote Desktop Services: Server and client requirements
    2. RDS Hardware Sizing and Capacity Planning Guidance.
    Hope it helps!
