RAC management utilities

srvctl
srvconfig
EM
crs_ctl
gsdctl
what other utilities we can use to manage RAC DBs, any body has some notes for RAC Utilies?

If you go to http://forums.oracle.com you may note a 'topic' titled 'Grid Computing with a number of RAC related forums. You may ALSO get relevant answers to your RAC question by asking people who are heavily interested in RAC.
In the mean time - your list misses SQLPLUS and RMAN to name a few.

    Hi Gurus!
On the SDN there is only accessible only the newest version of BP KAM ofr utilities. But we need the older version because od backend systems.. How to get it?
    Thanx for answer, Olian

Where did you buy your Mac? All new Macs come with iMovie assuming you're buying from Apple or an authorized retailer.
If you bought from a third party can you contact them and try to get the original DVDs that came with the Mac? They will contain iMovie.
If that doesn't work you can still buy iLife '11 on sites like Amazon.

  • What is the use of GSD in Oracle 10g RAC ...?

    Hi Rajesh,
If the GSD is not used in the new versions (only for backward comparability). we can drop this resource from CRS. what is the impact of this if we drop this resource.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
GSD IS USED ONLY IF 9I RAC DATABASE IS PRESENT
The function of GSD (10g and above) is to service requests for 9i RAC management clients and therefore when there are no 9i databases present, there is nothing for GSD to do.
Consequently, there will be no impact on a RAC cluster if GSD is offline and 9i is not used.
If gsd fails to start due to whetever reasons then best thing is to work with Oracle support to analyze and fix the issue. Until that time, gsd can be temporarily disabled.
In 11.2 GSD is disabled by default and the service will show as target:offline, status:offline.

    Hope your question is answered..

  • Oracle RAC with Oracle Linux Based RAC Applications

What are the advantages of using Oracle Linux Based RAC applications (also known as Linux Oracle Projects) with Oracle Database RAC 10g ?

Personally, I find RAC to be about 1000% easier to manage on Linux...than on what? And why?
Beacause personally I can't see difference in RAC management between Linux and Solaris (i.e.).

    Hi Thilo,
Thank you for your reply. I have implemented Versioning & Locking with write capability.
The checkin button is available for "Edit Locally" operation after configuring Content Management->utilities>Edit Locally to use activeX. it works fine.
But if we close the browser, where we clicked for "Edit Locally", we dont have any mechanism to checkin. i.e. we can't checkout, edit independent of EP, and checkin at a later point of time. instead, checkout>edit->checkin is a continuous sequence. Do EP support checkin sometimes after closing the browser anyway?

    Hi,
Take a look at ML #429966.1. I wouldn't be worrying about GSD is you don't have any 9i left.
    From the note:

  • Better Font Manager?

Font Book did not do a great job managing my fonts during a recent problem.
I own a few Font Managing utilities, including Suitcase, Font Agent Pro, and Font Reserve, but don't use them. Are any of them really an added help? Or are those aps just another thing to go wrong and better left alone?
    Thanks,
    Mark

That is a big point....Is there a need?
It all depends on how you use fonts. Prepress needs go far beyond anything Font Book can handle. Your typical user home user who never, or rarely manipulates fonts, Font Book will do.
A person wrote on web site I came across that Font Book 2 in Tiger now activates fonts in place. This is not true.
I just did more testing of this app and it's still lacking. In Panther, Font Book at least had the preference of either moving a font or copying it when activating. But either way, you still ended up with fonts that stayed in the Fonts folder even after you "deactivate" them. Unless you told it to delete the fonts you deactivate. This was a bad option since if you moved the fonts to activate and then delete when deactivating, you now had your fonts nowhere. You can imagine how that sat with the many people who don't have backups of anything.
Apple's apparent fix with Font Book 2 was to never move the originals or delete them when deactivating. There's one (count 'em, one!) option in the preferences for Font Book 2. Which Fonts folder do you want activated fonts copied to? That's it. I opened a whole bunch of fonts that I knew already existed in the /Library/Fonts/ folder. Font Book 2 wasted no time copying all 97 fonts I activated to the user Fonts folder, creating at least 60 font conflicts. Which it only tells you about with a bullet listing, but makes no attempt to fix on its own. It also still leaves every font you deactivate in the target Fonts folder. So many apps still see them as active regardless of what Font Book says their status is. You can click on Resolve Conflicts, but which font is it deactivating? The TrueType font you don't care about, or the OpenType PostScript font that's critical to the job? It doesn't tell you.
In short, Font Book is still the weakest manager available.
So here's my suggestions in order of preference, based on those font managers that I've tried/used.
    1) Suitcase Fusion. Very stable and reliable. So much more so than the previous X and X1 versions that I can't even recommend the previous versions anymore.
Not that it doesn't have drawbacks. Early releases of this version would refuse to open a handful of fonts (usually Type 1 PostScript) as "damaged" that versions X and X1 would open just fine. I haven't checked to see if the updates have fixed that issue. Fusion no longer opens fonts for Classic as X and X1 did.
Pluses include the bundled copy of Font Doctor. You can set up Fusion's preferences to automatically scan the fonts you're opening with Font Doctor. You can set it up to open fonts in place (the one I always use), or copy added fonts to its vault file. Optionally to that, delete the originals after adding them to the vault. I don't know of anyone who uses that option. A uselessly dangerous one if you ask me. I like the interface.
    2) Actually a toss up between MasterJuggler 3 and Suitcase Fusion for the number 1 spot. I haven't played with it for more than a short while, but it's a darn nice program. Very similar to Suitcase in its use and layout. I put Suitcase Fusion first mostly for its Font Sense ability. Very important to folks like me. For more on what Font Sense does, check out Suitcase Fusion on Extensis' web site.
Pluses include built in font scanning. Checks fonts you open for damage on the fly. But unlike Font Doctor, it can't fix damaged fonts. It only lets you know if it finds them. There are a handful of options to determine when, or whether or not you want Font Guardian to examine fonts being activated. A big plus for those who rely on Classic apps is that MasterJuggler 3 activates fonts for OS X and Classic simultaneously, as Suitcase used to before Fusion.
I've read some posts where people don't like Suitcase in OS X because it always has to be running to use it and keep fonts open, where Master Juggler doesn't. Wrong. You can't have fonts open that aren't in a Fonts folder without the system knowing where they are somehow. Suitcase in OS X was simply reduced to a single app that controls fonts from the application which doubles as the interface. In OS 9 and earlier, the interface was just a front end for the part of Suitcase that did all of real work. That part was in the Extensions folder, which was of course always running. All Extensis did was remove the dual layer method of running the program. MasterJuggler uses the dual layer method. It looks like you've shut the app down when you quit and your fonts are still magically available. But there's a Startup Item for OS X and an Extension in the OS 9 Classic folder that do the work of keeping fonts open as Suitcase used to. So either way, something is always running, as it would have to be in order to do what it does.
    3) Font Agent Pro. I've never used this one, but I've read quite a few reviews and customer ratings that put it right up there with the best/better competitors.
    4) Not just fourth, a distant fourth. FontExplorer X is free and better than Font Book, but not by much. Confusing and clunky interface. Confusing to set up and use. But at least it can be set up to activate fonts in place. Other than that, it doesn't have a whole lot going for it.
    5) Font Book. Last and least.

  • Linksys SRW 224G4, Cisco Catalyst 3650G and management via trunk

I have couple of Linksys SRW 224G4 and SRW 2024 connected together with Cisco C3650 switches. For my part of network VLAN100 is used as administrative vlan and VLAN1 as defult (on trunks or unused ports).
Altrough most of switches work fine, on all older models of SRW224G4 (hw 1.0, various firmware versions) there is no connectivity to management utilities (also ping won't work) via trunk (where of course VLAN100 is present). At the same time there is no problem with access on "local" ports (assigned to VLAN100) and there are no problems with traffic on VLAN 100 along the network.
    For example:
Two computers (A and B), two switches (sw1 - old SRW224G4 and sw2 - Cisco switch), are connected as follow:
    A--VLAN100--sw1--TRUNK--sw2--VLAN100--B
Swicthes have VLAN100 as management VLAN, computers are connected to access ports (untagged).
A has access to management on sw1 and sw2 and connectivity with B
B has access to management on sw2 and connectivity with B but has no access to management on sw1...
If sw1 and sw2 are same, old SRW224G4 - everything works fine.
Newer versions of SRW224G4, SRW2024 and SLM2024 works OK.
    Why it doesn't work?
    Thank for your attention.

I don’t thing there is difference with the old and new versions of the SRW224G4 unless there is a reported case of firmware problem with the said switch. As what you have said you also tested the new version of SRW224G4 and other models of these manage switches and seemed to work. I suggest totally resetting the said switch, making sure you updated the latest firmware version and making the necessary VLAN configurations.
Other than these, I suggest contacting Cisco Tech support to further look into your concern. I believe this unit belongs to the business series devices that Cisco is now supporting. Try to go to this link for the other business series devices and the site where you can get hold of Cisco for support:

  • ASM Device Blocks from DISK GROUP

    Hi Experts,
Need your expertise in finding the issues.
Currently we are in Linux RHEL 6, oracle 11.2.0.3
We dont have oracleasm binaries but using udev.
We have 12 ASM DISK groups with names ASM_DISK_01... ASM_DISK_12
All I am interested is how can I see where the block devices are mapped .
i.e ASM_DISK_01 is mapped to /dev/sd1 on the host... like that which file i need to check.
I tried /dev/mapper/*permissiom* file ...but no luck .
    Please help

Oracle is not supporting Red Hat Linux 6.x with the asmLib files. It is supporting the Oracle version of Linux, however it is no longer supplying the asmlib disk management utilities as it did in the Red Hat Linux 5.x release. You really don't need the asmlib because Red Hat Linux is provides the disk/device management with udev.
I have just successfully implemented Red Hat Linux 6.3 using Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.3 ASM and Oracle Real Application Cluster (RAC) release 11.2.0.3 and it working like a charm. At first I thought that I had to do a lot of things differently and thinking that it was time as we know it has changed (mayan calendar end) however we are just in a different time and Oracle 11gR2 (11.2.0.3) Grid Infrastructure and Red Hat Linux 6.3 are a great compliment.
Oracle continues to improve on its Grid Infrastructure ASM and Real Application Cluster ASM as Red Hat Linux continues to provide improved functionality and enterprise management.
I'm preparing to post my most recent build.

    Hello.
    We're running a NW6.5.8 machine on a HP Proliant ML350 G3. The server works

After restarting the machine the memory runs low after 3 or for days. I
can't see a reason for this.
Do you have an idea for this?

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be
    used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
    ; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
    <addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
    Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
    ; the address specified.
; The following is an example of a static DA.
    ; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all
    services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope
    "printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope
    name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed
    by quote on
    ; a single line. Example:
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon
    specifies a
    ; comment.
    DA IPV4, xxx.xxx.xxx.102

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA.
A semi-colon
    specifies a
    ; comment.

  • How do I set Time Machine to alternate between two attached external drives (so that if one fails I will have a separate backup to use)?

    Hi Everyone.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Right off the bat let me say I am using Mavericks 10.9.1 on a 2011 Macbook Pro and using all Lacie external hard drives.
I am trying to get Time Machine to alternate between two attached external hard drives, trying to be safe in case one of the backup drives itself fails.
I have both drives set in Time Machine.
From what I gather Time Machine should by default alternate between drives when backing up (I would assume it does one big initial backup on each then subsequent backups are just changes).
But this is not how it seems to be working and I cannot find a straight answer despite much Googling and Foruming
Unfortunately it seems to only be backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
There have been 4 backups since I set it up, all on "External Hard Drive 1", even though "External Hard Drive 2" is also attached and set in Time Machine.
I manually clicked "Back Up Now" and it started to work on "External Hard Drive 2" (like I want it to) for a minute but it appears to have stopped and gone back to backing up to "External Hard Drive 1".
Am I missing something? Does Time Machine only move on to another disk when the first one runs out of space? Do I have to turn one off in order to force it to back up to the other drive (that would be less convenient of course)?
I am hoping that I am missing something and that it will just alternate between the two. Otherwise it is not the most comforting and thorough backup system as I had hoped when I purchased the additional external hard drive.
I have a 1TB drive and a 500gig partition on another drive, both dedicated to backups (my Macbook HD is 475gig). It will take awhile for each to fill up and who knows what could happen during that time. Having Time Machine alternate between hard drives would be a nice small bit of security if the worst happened.
I realize that there are tons of other options for backing up but I just want to use Time Machine if I can.
Again thank you for your help!

You cannot use Time Machine in that way. I'm not sure where you heard that Time Machine alternates between drives automatically. What you can do is create a mirrored RAID array for the backup. This automatically duplicates whatever is on one drive onto the other drive.
Both drives must be the same size, and prefereably, exactly the same make and model. RAIDs can be configured using OS X's Disk Utility.
    RAID Basics
For basic definitions and discussion of what a RAID is and the different types of RAIDs see RAIDs.  Additional discussions plus advantages and disadvantages of RAIDs and different RAID arrays see:

    Hardware and Service Comparison.
    Hardware or Software RAID?
RAID Hardware Vs RAID Software - What is your best option?
RAID is a method of combining multiple disk drives into a single entity in order to improve the overall performance and reliability of your system. The different options for combining the disks are referred to as RAID levels. There are several different levels of RAID available depending on the needs of your system. One of the options available to you is whether you should use a Hardware RAID solution or a Software RAID solution.
RAID Hardware is always a disk controller to which you can cable up the disk drives. RAID Software is a set of kernel modules coupled together with management utilities that implement RAID in Software and require no additional hardware.
    Pros and cons
Software RAID is more flexible than Hardware RAID. Software RAID is also considerably less expensive. On the other hand, a Software RAID system requires more CPU cycles and power to run well than a comparable Hardware RAID System. Also, because Software RAID operates on a partition by partition basis where a number of individual disk partitions are grouped together as opposed to Hardware RAID systems which generally group together entire disk drives, Software RAID tends be slightly more complicated to run. This is because it has more available configurations and options. An added benefit to the slightly more expensive Hardware RAID solution is that many Hardware RAID systems incorporate features that are specialized for optimizing the performance of your system.
For more detailed information on the differences between Software RAID and Hardware RAID you may want to read: Hardware RAID vs. Software RAID: Which Implementation is Best for my Application?

; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be used
; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
    ; configure the DA.
; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>, <addr>'.
; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type. Currently, only
; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
    ; the address specified.
; The following is an example of a static DA.
    ; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all services
; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope "printer".
; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope name>"'.
; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed by quote on
    ; a single line. Example:
; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon specifies a
    ; comment

  • T400 - Recovery to Factory Contents gone wrong

I recently tried to restore my T400 to factory contents. Before I ran the recovery, here is how my drives were partitioned:
    C: Main (90 GB)
    E: Media (200 GB)
    S: SERVICE003 (1.5 GB)
    Q: Lenovo (10 GB)
After I ran the recovery the drives looked like this:
    C: Media (200 GB)
    E: SW_Preload (90 GB)
    F: Lenovo (10 GB)
    S: SERVICE003 (1.5 GB)
As you can see, the partions seem to have played musical chairs with their drive letters and Vista is now installed on the E: partition instead of C:. After Vista started up for the first time after the recovery, none of the Lenovo startup utilities loaded and none of them will load from the startup menu because they are looking for the utilities on C:. Likewise, none of the Windows built in utilities will work. For instance I can't run regedit, msconfig, or the Computer or Disk management utilities. In fact, it seems that Windows won't run any executables. When I try to open ANY executable I get the following message:
"Windows cannot find 'X:\Blah\Blah.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Another problem happens when I try to enter into the recovery software on bootup, it lets me go into the bios, but will not boot off of the recovery partition. I speculate this has something to do with the Lenovo partition letter being changed.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what I can do here? Anything would be appreciated.
    Thanks,

Message Edited by pcgregg on 05-29-2009 09:11 PM

Thought all Vista T400/500 preloads came with only three partitions C:, Q: and S:. What is this 200GB Media partition? Please specify type, model and op sys for your T400.
