    You know its not certified?
My first thought when I read the subject of this thread, and before reading what you posted, is that you've either done no research on RAC or didn't understand what you've read.
You can create a RAC cluster using any operating system certified by Oracle.
But the operating system is the least important part of creating a cluster. The questions you need to be able to address are:
    1. What is your solution to created shared storage?
    2. What is your solution to create the cache fusion interconnect and VIPs?
If you don't have an answer to these questions you can not build a RAC cluster.

  • Advantages/Disadvantages of installing Oracle RAC on Windows 2003 VS Linux

    Hello Guys,
I am not very good with linux, have to create a Oracle RAC environment using dataabse 10g.
I just need to know the advantages/disadvantages of configuring RAC on windows and on linux operating system.
Please help me with this. Please also specify what is the best available windows and linux version to configure RAC.
    Regards,
    Imran

Go with th eOS you have the skills in, if you have onsite expertise in windows then it makes no sense to use Linux because some guy on the internet says its better. Windows can be a highly available server OS when is managed by professional well quallified adminstrators.
Personally I would use linux because I am more familiar with the OS than windows. I also find oracle makes more sense on a *NIX type platform but there are shops that run oracle on windows with the required high availability.

  • 11g R2 - 2 node RAC on Windows X64 2003 Server

    hi
we are soon going to start building a 2 node 11g R2 RAC on Windows X64 2003 server
    questions
    1. In 11g R2, is creating 2 disk group DATA and FRA still considered the best practice?
    2. On which disk group should we place the OCR and Voting Disk
    3. If there are issues placing OCR and Voting Disk on ASM (there definitely appears to be some concerns / reported issues on this), is using OCFS2 still a viable option?
    4. Can someone point us to a document such as step by step installation of 11g R2 RAC on Windows with ASM or best practices 11g R2 RAC on Windows?
    thanks

A bit late maybe, but you can check Note 811271.1 - RAC Assurance Support Team: RAC Starter Kit and Best Practices (Windows).

  • Requeriments OS for installation Oracle 11g RAC  in Windows 2003

I plan to install Oracle 11g Standard with RAC in Windows 2003 Server.
I will use 2 nodes with the same OS.
I will use a SAN with fibre channel, to store the DB.
It is possible to install Oracle RAC in W2003 Standard ?
    I need obligatory W2003 Enterprise?
The cluster of the 2 nodes is made by OS or by Oracle Clusterware?
    Thanks in advance.

You can install on Windows 2003 Standard, it works with this OS. On the other hand the cluster is configured by the oracle clusterware. You need to make absolutely sure you are able to write from both nodes to the shared storage. Specific details on the regedit parameters you have to configure and specific OS issues are detailed at the above reference Werner posted.

is it possible make a RAC WITH WINDOWS XP?
    i saw this link..
    http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/prewin.htm
    and watch this information:
    Operating System
RAC for Windows 32-bit is supported on the following operating systems:
    - Windows 2000 with service pack 1 or higher. All editions, including Terminal Services and Windows 2000 MultiLanguage Edition (MLE), are supported.
    - Windows Server 2003

If you have metalink access you can check the CERTIFY matrix....I just checked and looks like Oracle10gR2 RAC on Windows XP with both 32bit is not supported, but 64bit is.

  • Please save me(rac on windows)

    Hi
Hey guys I am into Oracle Real Application Cluster Setup on widows 2000. I am doing it for demo purpose only so I am not using high-end hardware devices like SAN box (Storage Area Network) or RAID etc. What I am using is two desktop machines with sufficiemt RAM and hard disk.
At one of my machines I have made two extended logical partiotions for setting up cluster. I have installed oracle 9i on both the machines . but when i try to install oracle cluster file system I get an error prki-2016 which states that ocfs cannot detect disk partitions.
Friends this is a kind of R&D. Please tell me is it possible to setup RAC this way on minimal hardware. I would be thankful if you help me in pulling this one off.
Please provide all your suggestions whatever comes to your mind.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Found an article on OTN about using linux to do it on the cheap but not sure about windows....
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10g.html
Think it needs to be some sort of external disk array but never setup rac on windows so not sure. The above article uses firewire....
If you've got access to metalink loads of articles/notes on rac on there - step by step guides and faqs etc...

If you do not have expertise in managing Windows, will be like manage any OS for the first time.
I always say that a good DBA (Especially Grid Administrator) must be familiar with the Platform and Storage Vendor that he is administering. Our work depends on it.
To some DBAs Oracle on UNIX/Linux is more pleasant to manage, but we must not forget that Oracle RAC on Windows is certified by Oracle Corporation, for small enterprises and large enterprises no restriction.
In the My Oracle Support you can find many documents to help you in this challenge. Search for "RAC on Windows"

  • RAC on Windows with NAS

    Hi,
I'm working on installing a 11.2.0.3 2-node RAC on Windows 2008R2 64bit, with an EMC NAS for shared storage.
From my research, this configuration is possible through
    1) iSCSI (MOS note ID 1054027.1)
    or
    2) Direct NFS
Network attached storage (NAS) systems use a network file system (NFS) to access data. You can store Oracle RAC data files and recovery files on a supported NAS server using the Oracle Direct NFS client. (Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide)
    or
    3) ASM
You can place voting disks and OCR files either in an Oracle ASM disk group, or on a cluster file system.
Oracle recommends that you choose Oracle ASM as the shared storage option for the database data files and recovery files.
Can/should the above be used in combination with each other? Please correct me if I'm wrong, but is iSCSI the only means of sharing the OCR/voting disk files? Perhaps my confusion comes from a misunderstanding of each options specific functionality.

    1. Is Oracle RAC 11.2.0.4 on Windows 2012 supported with storage - NAS.
    2. If we use NAS, can we use ASM or shared file system to install process
    3. Do we have any performance impact if we use NAS
    1. Yes, it is supported.
    2. You should be able to use ASM or a shared (clustered) file system. Talk with your NAS vendor.
    3. I run Oracle RAC on NAS and it works fine for us. However, NAS is TCP/IP connected and wont' be as fast as a SAN with top Fibre Channel connectivity.
When deploying Oracle RAC on NAS (or any other storage for that matter), work with the storage vendor. They should be able to provide you information on how to set it up correctly to support Oracle RAC databases.
    Cheers,
    Brian

  • CONVERTING TWO NODE  RAC ON WINDOWS TO SINGLE INSTANCE

I got question about a two node RAC on Windows.
One of our vendors is hosting our oracle enviroment and we are planning to bring in the datacenter in house and manage it ourselves.
Current they have a two node RACon windows
The new enviroment we are building here , we want to get rid of RAC and bring it back to a single instance environment.
    How do i approach this?
    1. My first option was to create a new database server and do the export dp from one of the node and import to the new single instance enviroment.
My conncern is can you do export from RAC database and import it to a non RAC enviroment?
    2. My second option is to delete one node on the two node RAC and then do export dump or cold backup and copy the database files and necessary config files.
let me know how i can approach this.....

Okay guys after digging aroung i found the following approach.....
Cloning Oracle 10gR2 from RAC Environment to Single Instance Environment will raise the following error
ORA-29702: Error occurred in Cluster Group Service Operation.
The new instance is looking for CRS on new single instance non RAC environment.
For UNIX platform follow the following steps:
    - Shutdown the instance which is cloned to non RAC.
    - Shutdown all the listeners.
    - Relink Oracle executable with rac_off option.
    $ make -f ins_rdbms.mk rac_off
    $ make -f ins_rdbms.mk ioracle
    - Remove all the parameters from init.ora which points to second instance
and it is on other node.
    - Remove cluster_database parameter
    - Remove undo_tablespace parameter which points to second instance
For Windows Platform follow the following steps:
    - Shutdown the instance which is cloned to non RAC.
    - Shutdown all the listeners.
    - Rename following file in %ORACLE_HOME%/bin directory: orarac10.dll to orarac10.dll.bak
Give me your thoughts, there is nothing on Metalink....

    Hi Monika,
which Windows Server 2008 R2 edition is required to install RAC - standard or enterprise (NOT database edition - windows server 2008 edition)?
If we want to implement RAC 11Gr2 Enterprise Edition does the operating system also has to be enterprise edition or is it possible to install RAC 11GR2 Enterprise Edition on Windows Server 2008 Standard Edition? All Oracle Database 11g Release 2 is supported on the following Windows Server 2008 R2 editions:

    Windows Server 2008 Foundation (x64)
    Windows Server 2008 Standard (x64)

    Windows Server 2008 Datacenter (x64)
What Server Version is more suited for RAC Windows Server 2003 or Windows Server 2008, and why?I recommend Windows 2008, because the system is newer and has a lot of features that do not exist in Windows 2003. Oracle 11.2 is certified in Windows 2008.
