RAC Provisioning on Exa vs. Commodity?

Other than performance gains, is there any advantage having Exadata as the hardware when using OEM to provision RAC as opposed to other hardware?

Please expedite your query. If you just have to check exadata benefits, just google it, 100s of links will be flashed in front of you, click any one and try to understand.

  • Oracle Grid Infrastructure / RAC Provisioning

Using the OEM GC Provisioning and Automated Patching Pack, you are able to provision a complete Oracle RAC Cluster, including the Grid Infrastructure and creation of an ASM Instance and a RAC Database.
In this paper I show an example of how I was able to do the provisioning of Grd Infrastructure and Oracle RAC on a 2 node OracleVM Cluster.

Good one mate, I have recently installed OEM 11g on 2 nodes, and I am expected to set this (provisioning) up on OEM 11g soon, documents like this come in definitely handy, have seen your site too, looks very good and informative, thanks and keep writing.

  • Creating a new Oracle Database using 10G Grid Control

    Hi
Is it possible to create a new database using the 10g Grid COntrol.

The way to create a database with EM, is by using Provisioning procedures. For instance with the Oracle Clusterware / RAC Provisioning For UNIX, you can provisioning Clusterware, ASM + ASM instance creation and DB Software. Then by provisoning you would create a database. There are also procedures to extend a cluster.
So, provisoning is the way to go!

  • Linux Bare Metal Provisioning with OEM Pack for Linux for RAC 11gGR2 OEL 5X

    Hi,
Has anyone ever used the OEM Pack for Linux to provision Bare Metal Linux servers?
    See: http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/oem/omp_linux.html
We are thinking of using this tool to provision our Linux Servers, because we are UL-Customers with OEL, and this Tool is free of Charge for UL- Premier and Basic Limited Customers.
I have only found Documentation which seem to suggest that the OEM Linux Pack is supported with OEM Grid Control 10.2.0.4 and Oracle 10G ,
but i am not sure if this Pack is supported for use with OEM Grid Control 10.2.0.5 and Oracle RAC 11gR2.
I would appreciate your Help on this.

I believe you need to add a few patchsets to get full provisioning support for Database 11gR2. There is a My Oracle Support article that lists all the recommended patches for Grid Control.

  • OIM 9.1.0.2: Remove user assigned to a task in Provisioning Process

I have read Note: Ability to Have Multiple Approvers Per Resource Object in OIM [ID 429999.1], and executed each steps described in it. But when grant these resource object to some user. First the request was not sended directly to a approval process, as had been expected that I would. The request was send to a provisioning process, specifically to user has been assigned a task, when the user approves the request until the request is then sent to approval process.
I need to send directly to a approval process, because that's where I have defined my levels of approval.
I'm using oim 9.1.0.2 BP18 running on OC4J 10.1.3.5 on AIX 6.1 64-bit clustered install with two nodes, Oracle Database 10.2.0.4 on AIX 6.1 64-bit on RAC.

    Hello Everyone,
Thanks for your response. Actually i have a Approval Process, where i have defined my levels of approvals. In Resume I have this Env. :
    1.- A Resource: ResourceA
2.- A Provisioning Process in relation with ResourceA.
3.- A Approval Process in relation with ResourceA.
The request was send to a provisioning process, specifically to user has been assigned a task, when the user approves the request until the request is then sent to approval process.
I need to send directly to a approval process, because that's where I have defined my levels of approval. In other words i need to bypass the user assigned a task in provisioning process.

  • On Provision or reProvision, what order are the resources proccessed in?

    Howdy,
I am fighting a race condition. Occasionally, when an end user claims their computing accounts, and active sync thread is undoing some of the claiming process. I have done a lot of work to eliminate race condition potential, and am now rather stumped. However, I have come to wonder if the Provision workflow service is the culprit. The toUpdate list has LDAP first, a few DB resources, then Lighthouse. It is the LDAP active sync process that is stepping on the toes of the account claiming. Does this list get processed linearly in order? If so this might explain what is happening. However I can not find any information in the order of execution....
    Does anyone know?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi there, thanks for the response I checked this and here are the numbers / time stamps on an example:
This is from interpreting the list backup of archivelog commands.
    Backupset = 122672
    ==============
Archive log sequence 120688 low time: 25th May 15:53:07 next time: 25th May 15:57:54
    Piece1 pieceNumber=123368 9th June 04:10:38 <-- catalogued by us.
    Piece2 pieceNumber=122673 25th May 16:05:18 <-- Original backup on production.
    Backupset = 122677
    ==============
Archive log sequence 120683 low time: 25th May 15:27:50 Next time 25th May 15:32:24 <-- lower sequence number restored after above.
    Piece1 PieceNumber=123372 9th June 04:11:34 <-- Catalogued by us.
    Piece2 PieceNumber=122678 25th May 16:08:45 <-- Orignial backup on Production.
So the above would show that if catalogue command you could influence the Piece numbering. Therefore the restore order if like you say piece number is the key. I will need to review production as to why they were backed up in different order completed on production. Would think they would use the backupset numbering and then piece within the set / availability.
Question: You mention archive logs are restored and applied and deleted in batches if the volume of archivelogs is large enough to be spread over multiple backup sets. What determines the batches in terms of size / number?
Thanks for inputs. Answers some questions.

  • Seeking a solid reccomendation concerning 10g RAC implementation.

I need a solid recommendation regarding what hardware I should use for my planned Oracle 10g RAC environment.
Currently, I am looking for both node and SAN recommendations.
I also created a list of 11 questions that I need to have answered.
Here is how this will be configured:
    3 Node Oracle 10g RAC
    Each Node will consist of:
    32Gb of RAM (minimum)
Windows 2003 64-bit Enterprise (corporate standard, but I can go with Windows 2008 if I have a valid justification)
    74Gb RAID 1 (minimum)
    Dual 10Gb Ethernet NICs
    The SAN will consist of:
    750Gb-3Tb dedicated to Oracle
    10Gb Ethernet NICs
Here are some of my general questions:
1.) Are there any benchmarks or case studies that you are aware of that might help in the decision process regarding hardware?
2.) Where should my backups reside (SAN or elsewhere)?
3.) What margin should be added for SAN provisioning and waste (even if thin provisioning is implemented)?
4.) My CIO has decided to direct me to go with 10GbE copper instead of fiber channel, what unplanned hiccups can I expect?
5.) What are the caveats of running dual redundant SAN systems?
6.) We are currently using DELL hardware for all other systems, however I do have the freedom to change the vendor for this particular project if I can state a valid business justification. Any other vendors out there that make a better SAN or Node solution than Dell/EMC?
7.) How much local storage do I need on each node?
8.) Can I utilize 1 node to run ETL during production hours without drastically affecting database performance?
9.) Regarding the maintenance of this setup, are their any particular classes or training you would recommend? I am a seasoned Oracle DBA, but could use any specific training on the specifics of RAC and/or general performance.
10.) Are there specific advantages in Oracle 11g RAC vs. 10g that would be worth the cost of upgrading our 1000+ 10g user licenses?
11.) Are there any studies on the performance advantages/disadvantages of running Oracle 10g on Windows vs. Solaris (or any Unix)?
I will consider all input of high value, so please let me know what you would recommend.
    Thank you for your time.

please find answers that i know for some questions.
1.) Are there any benchmarks or case studies that you are aware of that might help in the decision process regarding hardware?
2.) Where should my backups reside (SAN or elsewhere)?
=> what is the backup method you will be using? certainly recommend RMAN (in addition to OS backups that you are planning to use) for block recovery, should there a block corruption.
i would keep some copies on the SAN local and mirror to DR site too.
3.) What margin should be added for SAN provisioning and waste (even if thin provisioning is implemented)?
=> do not suggest thin provisioning for production.
how big the volumes are going to be? reason for asking the Q is, if the volumes are going to be in TB, percentages can be lower. please plan for 2 years atleast.
=> have beetween 75GB to 100GB. hope you are going to have only ORACLE RDBMS and CRS software in here.
please make sure that you rotate your listener logs and alert logs and regular removal of old .trc files older than certain number of days old.
8.) Can I utilize 1 node to run ETL during production hours without drastically affecting database performance?
=> node usage will help from CPU standpoint only. what about the disk writes it is going to perform to the data files?
9.) Regarding the maintenance of this setup, are their any particular classes or training you would recommend? I am a seasoned Oracle DBA, but could use any specific training on the specifics of RAC and/or general performance.
=> attend a 5 day course from Oracle. install RAC on own and play with it.
10.) Are there specific advantages in Oracle 11g RAC vs. 10g that would be worth the cost of upgrading our 1000+ 10g user licenses?
=> did not compare, though installed 11g.
11.) Are there any studies on the performance advantages/disadvantages of running Oracle 10g on Windows vs. Solaris (or any Unix)?
=> running on windows? please do not. used on linux a lot. pretty stable and solid. recommend to go with 10.2.0.4 or higher.
    hope the above will help.

  • Commodity / Import Code Number

    Hello Friends,
Is there any way we can enter the Import code number with an enduser transaction. I know there is a provision to enter from SPRO.
I am also aware of the method thru VI94, but is there any way we can enter just one Import code with easy access transaction..
    Thanks

    Hello Jurgen,
    Thanks for your quick response.
You mean to say, there is no way an end user can enter the commodity code for foreign trade ? (HSN).
This means it has to be done in IMG ?  (with authorization for T Code OMG1)

  • Automatically provision users in OCS 10g - where are the -p switches?

    Hi,
in the past we used a bunch of scripts to automatically provision services to our nes OCS users. In OCS 9.0.4 (R2) we used the uniuser and unidsdiff commands for this.
As it seems that Oracle has left these switches behind in the new binaries in the OCS 10g, I wonder if anybody has found a possibility to provision OCS services to users without using either the provisioning console or having to enter a admin pw in the terminal?
This is more than bad, since I think that many customers of either the OCS 9.0.4.2 and stand alone calendars have been using this method for auto-provisioning and now Oracle has cut off this connectivity.
In case anybody knows a other way around I would be very interested it that.
    Regards,
    Stephan

    Thanks Martin for replying.
What I understood is Attach a task which will check if resource X is provisioned or not, if not provisioned then initiate provisioning of ResX.
I think even in this case also , if we are trying to provision userA simultaneously Res1 & Res2 , after successful provisioning both resources, will trigger the task to check if ResX is provisioned or not , it will return false and both resource will trigger auto provisioning of ResX. Anyway I will try this option and update.
How can I use database lock to avoid race condition in OIM?Database it self will not allow creation of same user twice(violate unique constraint).

  • Has Anyone deployed an EMC Symmetrix VMAX 20K using FAST VP in a 50 TB RAC Environement?

    Hi All:
My organization is about to undertake a hardware upgrade/migration of our largest dataset -- currently about 37TB and growing. Our intial provisioning will be for 50 TB. The RAC cluster will be 3 8 core servers with 256 Gb RAM and fiber attached EMC storage. We've met with the EMC reps and they are touting their tiered stroage solution called FAST VP. They use a mix of SSD, Fiber Channel and SATA devices and supposedly the SAN 'migrates seamlessly the data amongst these devices by activity'. my concern is that this is a DSS environement with little or no frequently accessed data to warm up into either cache or 'hot' storage. Our workload is characterised by massive parallel queries that do full table scans. I can't see how FAST VP will work to our advantidge in this envriorment and wanted to reach out and see if other DBA's are using this technology and what their perceptions are.

  • Oracle 10gR2 RAC - ASM question

    Hi
I have a question regarding the ASM storage. Let says I have a system here running Oracle 10gR2 RAC and would like to add a new/extend the current DATA disk group with more disk space. How do I do that? will it affect the existing data stored inside there?

So to add a little more to the discussion. Let's say your storage administrator presents you a LUN and is nice enough to add a partition of say 7G. (/dev/sdo1).
Now you need to take /dev/sdo1 stamp it and alter your storage group.
For illustration purposes I shall use rac1 and rac2 as my dual instance RAC and add to the asm group ARCH.
    As root on rac1
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk ARCH2 /dev/sdo1
    then run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
to make sure ARCH2 shows up.
    On rac2 you run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
You don't see ARCH2 so then run
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks
    then
    /etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
    Now you should see ARCH2
Ok the asm stamps are in sync now.
    Back to rac1
    su - oracle
set ORACLE_SID to asm instance and use sqlplus
    sqlplus / as sysasm
If you query V$ASM_DISK you will see your disk with a header_status of PROVISIONED
    that's good ...
    NOw while still in sqlplus
Let's bump up the asm_power_limit so rebalancing runs faster
    alter system set asm_power_limit=5 scope=both ;
If your asm instance are sharing the same spfile you only need do this on one instance; otherwise run the command both on all asm instances.
    Lastly
    ALTER DISKGROUP ARCH ADD DISK 'ORCL:ARCH2' ;
Now you can query V$ASM_OPERATION and watch ASM do it's magic of rebalancing.
That's it. All done while the DB is up and running.
How does that work for you?

  • Oracle single instance rac installation

    hi,
do I need minimum of 2 servers in order to carry out 11.2 oracle single instance RAC installation ? or that its possible with one node? and then can add more nodes in future?
is there any article/documents on this?
    thanks

    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e10718/clonerac.htm#CHDGFHCA
"The cloning process assumes that you successfully installed an Oracle Clusterware home and an Oracle home with Oracle RAC on at least one node. In addition, all root scripts must have run successfully on the node from which you are extending your cluster database."
    also
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E11882_01/rac.112/e10717/intro.htm#BEIHEJGD
"Overview of Cloning and Extending Oracle Clusterware in Grid Environments
Cloning nodes is the preferred method of creating new clusters. The cloning process copies Oracle Clusterware software images to other nodes that have similar hardware and software. Use cloning to quickly create several clusters of the same configuration. Before using cloning, you must install an Oracle Clusterware home successfully on at least one node using the instructions in your platform-specific Oracle Clusterware installation guide.
For new installations, or if you must install on only one cluster, Oracle recommends that you use the automated and interactive installation methods, such as Oracle Universal Installer or the Provisioning Pack feature of Oracle Enterprise Manager. These methods perform installation checks to ensure a successful installation. To add or delete Oracle Clusterware from nodes in the cluster, use the addNode.sh and rootcrs.pl scripts."
it doesnt directly say its possible and I cant find full documentation on how to go about it ... but seem like its possible ?

  • OEM Provisioning Directives

I am attempting to run an "out-of-the-box" deployment procedure to apply a one-off patch to two RAC nodes in parallel.
The procedure errors and stops on the step, "Stop RAC Instances," which is calling the directive, 'Directives/Oracle Directives/Common/RAC/All/Generic/Shut Down Database.
    Theerror received is below:
Failed - Error evaluating expression ${target.nodeName} for parameter Directive.NAME_CmdLineVars.node.
I am not sure from where and how OEM is setting values for target.nodeName, or why it is failing to evaluate the expression.
Below is the section of the OMS log that pertains to this failure.
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,

We are planning to use Oracle 10g's provisioning option to test for installation of some softwares onto the client machines on the network from a centralized server, or unzipping some of the files on the client machines to start off from the lower level and use the same for higher end application level.
Has some one have a prior experience on the same or any inputs towards this would help us.

  • Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online

    Hi,
I am currently in search of an article or document which describes the following workflow:
Expand ASM Diskgroup on RAC 11.2 online:
Resize physical LUN (no Infos needed)
    Resize Multipath
    Resize Partition
    Resize ASM Disk
Resize ASM DiskGroup ( I dont know if this is necessary?)
It is an Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.5 with 11.2 Clusterware. We use ISCSI Disk, ASMLib and Multipath (Linux -> multipathd).
The main goal is to do that online.
Does anyone know of such an article, or else has other tips regarding this scenario?

  • Impossible to create LDAP SYNC user on CUCM with Prime Collab Provisioning

    Hello,
Previously, I use Prime Provisionning to create and provision services for static users, it works.
For the same Customer, CUCM and Unity user are now imported from LDAP.
I add the changes in Provisioning processors (LDAP Auth + Sync).
At this time, it's impossible to create new users on CUCM from Provisioning !
    Here is my procedure :
    - I do a LDAP sync on prime to detect my new AD user.
    - I select it and provision services to push on CUCM
    - Orders stuck in being provisioned state...
On the CUCM, the user doesn't appear at all.
Is something wrong in my method ?
Do I need to make a LDAP sync on the CUCM to import users, next user synchro on processor in Prime, then edit user ?
    Thanks

    Clement,
I suspect you have LDAP sync turned on in CUCM. If CUCM is set to sync and does not already have the userID in it's database it will reject a user add.
This is a recognized problem with having both products set to sync. There are some solutions:
Always sync CUCM before you sync Prime Collaboration Provisioning (PCP).  This way the new user will already be in CUCM and then will accept a provisioning order from PCP.  The frequency of LDAP sync on CUCM will determine how often PCP can push new users to CUCM.
If PCP tries to provision a user but it is rejected by CUCM, provisioning will attempt to send it for 24 hours. There is an assumption that CUCM will sync daily so at some point CUCM will get the userID and then when PCP tries to provision, it will be accepted.
Use the latest CUCM 10.5(x) with a patch that provides the Authenticate Only setting setting. You will have to check with TAC or CUCM Marketing/TMEs for more information.  In this case, CUCM will authenticate admins and Jabber clients against AD, but will take users from PCP immediately.  The CUCM eng/marketing team has recommended we move away from syncing CUCM when PCP is doing the syncing from AD. CUCM does not need to sync when PCP is present. This eliminates the race condition between which app synced first.
