RAC - pulling the public network connector

Hallo,
would be really good to get an answer for this case:
What is the expected behaviour of the instance if i pull out the network connector of the public network.
In our case the instance of that node is reacting with an automatic shutdown abort.
Is that ok ? We want to have a running AS on top of the RAC so if there are network problems the whole AS would crash if the instance disappears in the back.
Thx for clarification
Jochen

The Oracle Clusterware requires that each node be connected to a private network by way of a private interconnect.
The private interconnect that Oracle Clusterware requires is a separate network that you configure between the cluster nodes. This interconnect, which is required by RAC, can be the same network that the clusterware uses, but the interconnect should not be accessible by nodes that are not part of the cluster.
So unless you do not use your public network as part of the private network (which is a contradiction) and both networks use the same protocols you will not have Oracle Clusterware use the "public/private" network link. It was just not registered with Oracle Clusterware during installation.

  • Oracle 10g RAC - public network interface down

    Hi all,
I have a question about Oracle RAC and network interface.
We're using Oracle 10gR2 RAC with two nodes on Linux Red Hat.
Let's assume that the public network interface goes down.
I would like to know what happens with existing connections
on node with network interface with problems.
    Are connections frozen, actives?
Can the users continue to use theses existing connections using the another node of RAC?
I know that the listener goes down and any other connections is allowed.
    Thank you very much!!!!

You should spend some time in a test lab where you can test this stuff for yourself. Read the documentation and there are tons of sites out there that purport to have all of your RAC/TAF/FAN/FAF questions. - I would read and trust the documentation first.

  • Oracle RAC public network bandwidth requirement

Is there any thumb rule on what should be bandwidth for the public network for a type of workload?

    user458367 wrote:
Is there any thumb rule on what should be bandwidth for the public network for a type of workload? No. As the workload could mean sending 1KB instruction (SQL) from the client to the cluster, cause a 100 PQs to be created, cluster resources to be maxed out, and a 1KB result (aggregated answer) to be returned to the client.
What was the workload impact on the network? 2KB. What was the workload impact on the cluster? Significant.
Network management is also a lot more than simplistically dealing with "+workloads+". It is a shared medium. It is routed. It can implement differentiated services/quality of service. It is managed entirely separately from an application or o/s or database perspective. There are numerous other factors that need to be considered than just the perspective of what the "workload" is.

  • What are the host network requirements for a 2012 R2 failover cluster using fiber channel?

I've seen comments on here regarding how the heartbeat signal isn't really required anymore - is that true?  We started using Hyper-V in its infancy and have upgraded gleefully every step of the way.  With 2012 R2, we also upgraded from 1gb iSCSI
to 8GB Fiber Channel.  Currently, I have three NICs in use on each host.  One for "No cluster communication" on it's own VLAN.  Another for "Allow cluster network communication on this network" but NOT allowing clients, on
a different VLAN.  And lastly the public network which allows cluster comms and clients on it (public VLAN).
Is it still necessary to have all three of these NICs in use?  If the heartbeat isn't necessary any more, is there any reason to not have two public IPs and do away with the rest of the network?  (two for fault tolerance)  Does Live Migration
still use Ethernet if FC is available?  I wasn't sure what all has changed with these requirements since Hyper-V first came out.
If it matters, we have 5 servers w/160GB RAM, 8 NICs, dual HBAs connected to redundant FC switches, going to two SANs.  We're running around 30 VMs right now.
Can someone share their knowledge with me regarding the proper setup for my environment?  Many Thanks!

    Hi,
You can setup cluster with a single network but that leaves you with single point of failure on the Networking front, it is still recommended to have a heartbeat network.
Live migration would still happen though Ethernet, it has nothing to do with FC. Don't get confused, you had iSCSI for storage which used one of your VLAN and now you have FC for your storage.
Your hardware specs looks good. You can set up the following networks -
    1. Public Network - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
    2. Heartbeat Network - Don't use teamed Adaptor
    3. Live Migration - Team two or more NICs (based on bandwidth aggregation)
Plan properly and draw guidelines to visualize and to remove single point of failure at all points.
Feel free to ask if you have some more queries.

  • VPN Connection Seen As Public Network In Windows 8.1 & No Way To Change It?

    Hello,
I have a perfectly working VPN setup in Windows 7 however since I have got a Windows 8 computer and subsequently upgraded it to 8.1 when I connect to the VPN it assigns the connection as Public and I cannot view any of the network shares.
As I understand it, in Windows 8 you could go into the network section of Change PC Settings, right click over the VPN and enable sharing which would convert the public network type to private however there is no longer this option to enable sharing in 8.1
So I'm left with having to disable the public firewall and then connect to the VPN where it works perfectly but is a bit of a pain.
I'm hoping someone can help me to change the network type of the VPN connection from Public to Private, unfortunately the laptop runs Windows 8.1 Home Premium so I do not have access to gpedit.msc
    Hope someone can help.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,
Based on my knowledge, we can use the following method to change the network type of connection from Public to Private.
Set Network to be Private in Windows 8 and 8.1 in Registry
1.Press Win + R keys to open the Run dialog, type regedit, and press Enter.
2.In Registry Editor, navigate to the location below:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList\Profiles
3.Expand Profiles, click on each long GUID number subkey, and look at its PofileName string value in the right pane to see if it has the current network name (ex: Network) until found.
4.When you find the correct PofileName for your network name, double click/tap on the Category DWORD value in the same right pane to modify it.
5.Type in a new Data value number for the network location you want, and click/tap on OK.
    Network location      Data value
    Public                                0
    Private                             1
    Domain                            2
6.When finished, please reboot your computer.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the public IP in this case?!!

I have an ASA firewall,i also have a Motorola router that is actually a modem and a router and an access point in the same time (3 in 1) ;however iam only intending to use the Motorola internal ports to connect to the external ASA port, when i finish the NAT rules (which translating the internal ASA network into the outside network which is 192.168.0.0/24 which is the internal network for the Motorola router) which one is the public IP address in this case?? i mean i might not be able to get to the ASA's internal IP from the Internet because it is the internal network for the Motorola...so in this case is my only public IP on the Internet in the Motorola's external IP ? which is the ISP's IP address provided???
I am really lost on this one, any help here is much appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hi,
Seems to me that your public IP address will be configured on the Motorola device. In most cases the device will probably be using DHCP to get the public IP address from the ISP and therefore the IP might sometimes change. Though naturally it might be a static public IP address as I don't know the thing is handled in your case.
If you wish to have a host/server reachable from the Internet then you would probably have to configure somekind of Static PAT (Port Forward) on the Motorola device or perhaps even Static NAT the public IP address from to the external IP of the ASA (from the network 192.168.0.0/24) so that all traffic that is allowed on the Motorola device will be forwarded to the ASA (because of the 1:1 Static NAT mapping of the IP addresses)
If you need to reach your internal network remotely and dont need to host anything directly to the public network then you might be able to set up VPN Client connection to the ASA.
If you dont know the public IP address then if its a DHCP IP address from the ISP you can always check your current public IP address through some site. I for example tend to go to www.ripe.net . It shows your current IP address on the site. Naturally there should be multiple other sites that show this information.
If your public IP address is static then the ISP probably has provided you some documentation which mentions the public IP address assigned to you when you got the Internet connection.
Also you might not need to configure NAT at all on the ASA since its not an edge device. You could simply let the internal networks of ASA and the Motorola device to communicate with their original IP addresses. This would naturally require that the Motorola device has a route for the ASA internal network on it pointing towards the external IP address of the ASA.

  • Clustered Environment - Changing from Public Network to Private Network

I have a clustered environment where the database sits on one node and the central instance sits on the other node. We just found out that somehow the communication between the database and central instance has been changed to talk over the public network instead of the private network. We don't know who did it or why.
So, my question is what do I need to do in SAP to accomodate the changing back to using the private network? Do I need to change system names in the profiles? Are there any gotchas on doing this? Are there any documents on doing this?
Thanks for any information you can provide on this topic.

  • Thinkpad 430u Windows 7 - Public Network - Wireless router is not assigning IP address

    Hello,
My computer knowledge is limited, but I have a chronic issue when attempting to connect to public wireless networks, ie a coffee shop:
When I attempt to connect, the laptop identifies the public network as an Unidentified Network and although it "connects" it says No Internet Access. Normally, when I connect, I would be prompted to selected Home, Work, Public and this does NOT happen.  In the Network and Sharing Center, under the heading "View your active Networks" it says Unidentified Netowork, Public Network; Access type: No Internet Access, Connections: Wireless Network Connection (name of network).  The words "Public Network" is NOT a hyperlink and cannot be clicked on.
When I run run cmd and check ipconfig I find that the wireless router is not assigning an ip address to my laptop.  i then input ipconfig/releasei, and ipconfig/renew.  I then receive and error saying "An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Network Connection: The operation was canceled by the user."
I have turned off my firewall.
My smart phone can connect the the internet with no problem and the other laptop users have no problem either.  This indicates there is no problem with the wirless router itself, but is some kind of setting or something that needs to be adjusted on my end.
    Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address: 169.254.86.100
    Subnet mask: 255.255.0.0
    Default gateway: n/a
Please, any help is appreciate.  This is a chronic problem any time I link to public networks.
P.S. I have no problem connecting to the internet in my own home
    Thank you!!

Sorry, forgot to include: it's a 2Wire 2701hg-b Residential Gateway.  I'm unsure how old the model itself is--it was just given to us by AT&T (it's the model they use for their U-verse service).  I checked today and the firmware is up-to-date.
    Thanks.

  • I'm trying to log into a public network and while the fan blade shows I have a connection I can not get the user agreement to load in Safari. This was working until yesterday, what changed?

I've reset my network settings. I've cleared cache and cookies in the browser. Before yesterday the login screen would appear anytime I attempted to use an app or program that required internet access. Pretty much every program. Now I have a brick tablet at work. I've reset everything I can find. I'm at a dead end.
I've seen other ipads that had the auto login togle and auto join togle under network selection, my ipad does not have those options. Logging in at home is working fine on my private network. This public network is not being reset or forgotten when I choose "forget network" or Safari is blocking the login page and I don't know how to un block it.

Well, when I join a public wifi, a log in page displays a few seconds later, displaying the user agreement. But, earlier today, I was trying to connect my friend's 3GS to a public wifi, and it did not show up. So. I don't really know what happen. I think you should toggle the auto Join to on.

To log in on a public network without a password-key (not secured), a user login is required.
After connecting to the network, the browser, upon opening it, normally automatically loads the login page, in order to enter a username and password and connect to the internet.
Firefox doesn't find the login page automatically, so I need to switch to google Chrome just to log in to the network.
Does this have anything to do with user settings in the options of firefox?

However my Drop Box folder is not showing up when other users are trying to access my computer via the network.
My file sharing is on and I have attached an image with the settings I am using. I have compared these settings to other macs in the office that have a working Drop Box folder and they match. Hope you guys can help me.
