RAC support for virtualisation
Is RAC (10g) supported in any virtualised environment, especially interested in Solaris support (cotainers, logical partitions etc.). Are there any reference sites for RAC in any virtualised environment?
I'm starting to think that as well. I'm going to raise an SR with Oracle and get the official answer.
I was reading however about HP VSE on Integrity using HP-UX . This is more or less what we were looking for.....Just not Sun!!

Why FAN is only supported for Exalogic platform? Is this intended to include it in x86 platform?
Hi,
FAN support along with all of the RAC support enhancements in Tuxedo 12.1.3 are licensed as part of the Exalogic Elastic Cloud Software which is included with Exalogic and SuperCluster systems.

Which CPU should I buy to support hardware virtualisation
I would like to buy a cpu/motherboard bundle , but I want it to definately support "hardware virtualisation" . Am having great difficulty in find clear and easy to read info as to which CPU does or does not support hardware virtualisation.
are there any guidelines ??
GeorgeFor any AMD or Intel processors made in the last year (other than some of the very lowest end chips), VT/AMDV should be present. You may be able to verify for a specific processor from one of these pages.
http://www.intel.com/products/processor_number/
http://products.amd.com/en-us/default.aspx
Note that some systems disable VT/AMDV in the BIOS, so if you build a system with a processor that you think should support VT/AMDV and Xen says it doesn't, you may be able to enable it in your BIOS.
For other x86-compatible processor vendors, sorry I can't help. -
RAC Differences for Standard and Enterprise Editions of 10g
Are there any differences between RAC implementations for Oracle 10g SE and RAC option for Oracle 10g Enterprise Edition (except CPU numbers limitations and CRS&ASM necessity)? I heard some buzz what RAC for SE have only HA abilities.
We havent seen any differences. 10g is still 10g.
One noted requirements is for SE support you must use the ASM software. Functionally the RAC portion appears to be the same .. -
Third party backup software support for dataguard configurations
Any Oracle document about the subject?
I would be interested in an answer about backupexec 2010 r2 in particular, because reading the manual for its oracle agent there is information about Oracle/RMAN and RAC support, but nothing about Dataguard integration, that could be a value added.
Anyone using third party backup agents in a Dataguard configuration?
Interested in version 11gR2 on Linux.
Thanks,
Gianlucayes, you should be able to use the full backup taken in middle and use the rest of the log backups taken afterwards to restore the database.while I do not use TSM, we use QUEST(DELL) LITESPEED, that takes full backup once a day and log backups
every 15mins.
if someone accidentally takes full backup in the middle of day with out 'copy only',
log sequence will break and successive log backups depend on this full back up.
while this should be prevented from happening in first place, you can still restore from native full backup and then apply log backups taken from third party taken after the native Full backup.
if this happens, I would restore the FULLBACKP with NORECOVERY using NATIVE SQL and then use lite speed syntax to restore the log backups.Remember, native sql cannot read third party formatted backups(atleast litespeed), thats why I restore the full backup
using native sql, since it was taken with native sql backup and log backups using litespeed syntax.
Hope it Helps!!
Thanks, well it was just a theory discussion we had about the issue. But none of us could find info on the internet easy to prove our point :) Thanks. -
WebLogic 8.1 SP4 support for 10g R2
Hi,
We are looking to upgrade Oracle Server 8i to the latest version ie. 10g R2. We are running Weblogic 8.1 SP4. On BEA's site the product documentation doesn't specify the 10g R2 support, instead only list support for 9.2.0 and later versions for SP4. Has anyone tried running WL 8.1 SP4 with Oracle 10g R2. We are not looking to upgrade to RAC version of this.
Thanks. This is targeted by coming June.

UCS 1.4 support for PVLAN
Hi all,
Cisco advise UCS 1.4 supports PVLAN. But i see the following comment about PVLAN in UCS 1.4
"UCS extends PVLAN support for non virtualised deployments (without vSwitch ) . "
"UCS release 1.4(1) provides support for isolated PVLAN support for physical server access ports or for Palo CNA vNIC ports."
Does this means PVLAN won't work for virtual machine if VMs is connected to UCS by Nexus1000v or vDS although i am using PALO (M81KR) card?
Could anybody can confirm that?
Thank you very much!Have not got that working so far...how would that traffic flow work?
1000v -> 6120 -> 5020 -> 6500s
(2) 10Gbe interfaces, one on each fabric to the blades. All VLANs (including the PVLAN parent and child VLAN IDs) are defined and added to the server templates - so propagated to each ESX host.
At this point, nothing can do layer 3 except for the 6500s. Let's say my primary VLAN ID for one PVLAN is 160 and the isolated vlan ID is 161...
On the Nexus 1000v:
vlan 160
name TEN1-Maint-PVLAN
private-vlan primary
private-vlan association 161
vlan 161
name TEN1-Maint-Iso
private-vlan isolated
port-profile type vethernet TEN1-Maint-PVLAN-Isolated
description TEN1-Maint-PVLAN-Isolated
vmware port-group
switchport mode private-vlan host
switchport private-vlan host-association 160 161
no shutdown
state enabled
port-profile type vethernet TEN1-Maint-PVLAN-Promiscuous
description TEN1-Maint-PVLAN-Promiscuous
vmware port-group
switchport mode private-vlan promiscuous
switchport private-vlan mapping 160 161
no shutdown
state enabled
port-profile type ethernet system-uplink
description Physical uplink from N1Kv to physical switch
vmware port-group
switchport mode trunk
switchport trunk allowed vlan all
channel-group auto mode on mac-pinning
no shutdown
system vlan 20,116-119,202,1408
state enabled
This works fine to and from VMs on the same ESX host (PVLAN port-profiles work as expected)...If I move a VM over to another host, nothing works...pretty sure not even if in same promiscuous port-profile. How does the 6120 handle this traffic? What do they get tagged with when they leave the 1000v? -

Which virtualization is suitable for us.? Hyper v or VM
VM does not support from orcle,Still some customers are using. Is it advisable to us VM?
Hyper V supports sap with orcle?
Or can we install all application on 1 single Operating System?
Thanks a lot in Advance

Is DB/SE supported for message persistence through OEMS?
Hi all,
I'm in the process of designing an high availability configuration for ESB.
We will use Oracle database RAC for the metadata repository and for message persistence through Oracle Enterprise Messaging Service (OEMS) as well.
I'm considering to use the Oracle Database Standard Edition (SE) for clustering (Although the license policy for SE not only depends on the number of processor sockets but also on the MCM's since the 1st of May!)
Does anyone know if the database standard edition is officially supported for message persistence through OEMS?
Thanks in advance,
Jeroen van SchaijkHi Scott,
as I know the only difference in the partnr. is:
370-xxxx Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array (Non-RoHS)
371-xxxx Sun StorEdge 3510 FC Array RoHS

Can RAC support Oracle VMs ONLY ?
Can RAC support Oracle VMs (virtual servers only) ? ie No physical servers.
or must have a mix of physical and virtual servers for RAC ?
QNNo Real Application Cluster technology has ever supported more than one database.Quite untrue.
I know that both you and Tom Kyte take the stand that a cluster should have only 1 instance per node.
That doesn't mean that it is not possible to have more than one database in a cluster -- i.e more than one instance in a node.
That doesn't mean that it must always be so. Installing a separate cluster and additional EE + RAC licences for a separate database can be quite expensive. Of course, your reply is "consolidate". That is another debate that has been going on for years.
A discussion on multiple databases on RAC is also at

Z87I/H87I Support for VT-x VT-d
I'm planning to build mini ESXi server.
I'm looking at these 2 motherboards Z87I and H87I but I have few questions. do either of them support VT-d. and if so WHERE do it say that ? because nether Manual or Bios itself says so. (there is support for Intel Virtualisation Tech) but that could be referring to VT-x, VT-D or Intel EPT
second why is UK site lists support for 32GB of ram, while US site listing is only 16GB.Look at the Intel CPU datasheets for which ones support those features. Any 87 chipset board should support it all.
Couldn't tell you about the 32GB listed at the one site. MSI Global shows 16GB as a total each for those boards. -
Can Oracle 11g RAC support 2 separate databases?
1. Can Oracle 11g RAC support 2 separate databases given that it asks for SCAN ip for cluster with a single Listener port number?
2. Will the Oracle 11.2 database connections work successfully if I setup a mandatory DNS server within the Oracle RAC servers?
I'm leading a team for a 11g project and appreciate responses.
Thanks

RAC support different hardware level servers?
Hai all,
Is RAC support different OS level and hardware level? Please clarify the server needs?
ShijuHi,
1st: whether it will be a Homogenous or Hetrogenous system copy?
This will be homogenous system copy
2nd: can i use the hp dataprotector to restore on different hardware? If anyone has experience with restoring on different
hardware using dataprotector please share..
dataprotector is backup utility, for using this utility you have to configure dataprotector client on new hardware , after which you will be able to restore the database.
Thanks

Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?
I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
Best regards,
Kjell Are RefsvikI think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.
