RAC with 1 NIC card

Hi Experts
I am trying to configure RAC on 2 desktops and common storage, where the desktops have single NIC cards only. Could you please help me in the steps required to configure the PRIV NIC (aliasing of the NIC).
Thanks

  • Have pc with 2 nic cards. One is for network and the other is for testing hardware communication.

As the unit communicates with test software it generate data output that needs to go back to pc hard drive then the program copies the program over the other nic to a server shared folder.
But as of recently if test unti is off then the network is fine and see all mapped drives.
But once I turn on the test unit then the mapping is gone and will not be able to map drives at all.
Must then turn off test unit then reboot to get mappings back.
What has happend?  Why does this now happen after visiting windows update?   It makes testing the hardware impossible.

    Hi,
It maybe something causes the mapping drives lost, you can use net use command to map your drives with persistent parameter.
If this doesn’t work, I would recommend  to use process monitor to check what’s happened during your operation.

  • Leopard server 10.5.6 with two nic card and two hostname

    Hi,
Here is what I am intending to do but don't know how:
-setup a Mac server that has 2 built-in nic.
-nic1 is setup as a DHCP, has proper hostname, DNS, etc. and connects to internet and is easy when you configure it as a server while is connected.
-But, my other nic2 is not DHCP and is cut off from outside and is intended for internal research, but given a proper IP and hostname.
If I want to install the server, then without internet connection it is hard to complete the setup and If I do then it assigns the hostname pointing to the nic1 (which i don't want)
How should I go about this? I tried both way, but Mac picks the hostname that is associated with nic1 always.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks

Can you do what you want? Sure. (If I understand what you're up to.) But it gets a little ugly.
It's easier to use a firewall-router-NAT device here.
Dual-NIC configurations and IP are an interesting case.
A firewall-router-NAT configuration and the resulting IP routing works out of the box. It also avoids the case where users and software are active on the firewall (as is the case with a dual-NIC host system acting as a firewall), and where these activities happen to modify the firewall configuration; this whether by accident, by intention, or through an exploit. Firewalls are best kept locked down.
If you want to learn IP routing and preferred paths and other network-level considerations, then by all means do continue to work with a dual-NIC host system. (This isn't specific to Mac, either. This is simply how IP and IP routing works. There's no concept of automatically returning the packets of a connection out the same controller that the connection arrived on, for instance. And various IP protocols don't use connections.)
As for DNS and particularly with NAT, you'll probably end up with a split configuration. I'd tend to have an external DNS provider translate the public DNS domain and the public address, and have the NAT box (with port forwarding) map that to the appropriate private IP address. Within the private address space, a private DNS domain (a subdomain of a public registered domain, or a separate registered domain) uses the local (private) DNS server to resolve its queries, and that DNS server forwards queries for which it is not authoritative to the organization's public DNS server.
Do use node.foo.example.com and node.example.com (where you own example.com) or use node.example.com and node.example.net (where you hold both domains), with the former being external and the latter being the internal address space. Having the same name resolve to two different IP addresses gets weird, as (for instance) a laptop moving between domains (particularly in the co-presence of that abomination known as NAT) may not end up routing its IP traffic where you expect. Having the convention of a specific internal subdomain or a specific internal domain also makes the "inside versus outside" distinction very clear, too. It's possible to use a completely private domain internally, but (given ICANN is opening up TLDs, and in the absence of an ICANN-reserved internal-only domain) I don't recommend that.
If you want to continue with the original course of action, this IP routing and split DNS is a common question. Dig around in the forums, and dig around specifically for discussions of IP default routing, for split-brain or split-horizon or split-zone DNS, consider acquiring Cricket Liu's DNS book (which is what we all usually go read when we hit a DNS weirdness), and for tools such as the CutEdge Systems DNS Enabler tool.

  • 2 NIC Cards in PowerMac G3 Server running OS X Server 10.3?

    Hello all,
I have installed a D-Link PCI Network Adapter, Model #DFE-530TX+, into one of my G3 Servers (Blue and White - Yosemitie) running OS X Server 10.3.
I booted and then installed the driver provided on the vendors CD and then rebooted. I get an error at desktop saying that the driver cannot be used because it was installed incorrectly, although I followed D-Links instructions to the T.
I visited D-Links website and there is a different driver available for Mac OS 10.2x. When I install this one, same error.
Apple System Profiler does not show that there is a card installed in the respective PCI slot. I have tried both remaining slots.
Is there something obvious that I'm missing concerning installation of a secondary Ethernet connection in this machine? I have been told that OS X Server 10.3 doesn't need the driver installed at all, it should just pick it up.
Thanks for any help you can provide.
    PowerMac G3 Server-Blue-and-White

A tech friend of mine suggested that I run the MacOSXServerEssentials.pkg located on Disc #2 of the OS X Server installation discs. Since the D-Link card functioned under the client version of OS X 10.3.9, if I ran the OS X Server Essentials package and upgraded a client to a server, it should retain the PCI card information. I tried to run the package and was told that I needed to have a minimum of OS X 10.3.9 client installed. I had not installed the Combo Update, therefore, I only had OS X 10.3.2 client installed. Once updated to 10.3.9 client, I ran the OSXServerEssentials package. Once complete it did not ask for a restart and was still booted into the OS X 10.3.9 client version. I did restart and am glad to report that I am now running OS X Server 10.3.9 with two NIC cards on a PowerMac Blue-and-White G3.
    Thanks again for your suggestions,

What I have to configure from the Cisco switches site in order to avoid ARP problems?
    Thank you for your support
    Stelios

    Stelios,
We have had issues when trying to load balance between the NICs. when in active/active, the virtual MAC reflects in both the connected switch ports, and the packets tend to loop between the ports. There will be a lot of Spanning Tree TCNs generated, which can shoot up the CPU. We had a 4507R with SUP IV, which got loaded to 70% when doing load balancing. when we made it active/standby on the NIC, the CPU came down to 1 %...
so just be careful on this. best way of doing it is active/standby
hope this helps.. all the best.. rate replies if found useful..

  • Server 10.3.9 - Three NIC cards - Route between Three subnets

I have a panther server with three nic cards, each one connected to a different network.
xx.xx.1.x = private intranet used for storing video files- Has a DHCP server
xx.xx.2.x = company intranet used for internet access-
    xx.xx.3.x = editors intranet
I have a NAT set up to forward network activity from the .3 to the .2
But the editors (.3) also need to access .1.
Is there a way to connect the .3 to the .1 network through the server?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Here's a picture to show what I'm trying to say.
    http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing.png

Here is my newest routing table. I cleared everything out and started over.
I have NAT enabled and it is working, but I removed the private address.
    http://www.kbdiondemand.org/client_files/routing3.png
I'm starting to wonder if I need to create a divert rule in the firewall. NAT has a firewall divert rule to send traffic to the NAT service.
So far, I haven't gotten the syntaxt correct for creating the divert rule. The error message is the port is incorrect?
I haven't found the information on any of the panther server books out there. They shy away from using the server as a firewall or a router.
excerpt from Essential Mac OS X Panther Server Administration
Of all the things that a packet filter can do, Apple seems to have some pretty specific things in mind for the Firewall service in Mac OS X Server. Panther Server's Firewall service is targeted at protecting the server on which it is running. Configuring a firewall for this purpose is very different from configuring a firewall designed to sit at the border between a network and the Internet. Mac OS X Server is simply not well-suited for the tasks normally performed by a dedicated firewall.
For example, Mac OS X Server needs to be rebooted for things like software updates, and does a fairly poor job of routing packets during the reboot. Surely you could configure Mac OS X Server as a router and then never touch it so that it wouldn't have to be rebooted, but that means no software updates. Just because Mac OS X Server can act as a router; that does not mean it's the most cost-effective or functional solution. Trying to shoehorn Apple's Firewall service into performing duties that it wasn't intended to provide is generally not a good idea.
Apple also includes a Network Address Translation (NAT) service that works in conjunction with the firewall. This service could be used to provide Internet access to a workgroup by allowing the workstations to share the server's IP address. While the NAT service does work, better results may be found with the average $40 NAT router. The bottom line is that it's a very good idea to use dedicated network hardware, and not a personal computer, to perform critical network functions like routing. This reduces network downtime due to computer maintenance such as software updates.
I will focus on using Apple's Firewall service for protection of services running on our server, and not to do routing or NAT for other computers.

  • RAC connection problem with interconnect NIC failure

We have an 11g 2-node test RAC setup on RHEL 4 that is configured to have no load balancing (client or server), with Node2 existing as a failover node only. Connection and vip failover works fine in most situations (public interface fail, node fail, cable pull, node 2 interconnect fail, interconnect switch fail etc etc).
When the node1 interconnect card failure is emulated (ifdown eth1):
    node2 gets evicted and reboots
    failover of existing connections occurs
VIP from node2 is relocated to node1
However new connection attempts from clients and the server receive a ORA-12541: TNS:no listener message.
The basis of this is the issue that in the event of an interconnect failure, the lowest number node is supposed to survive - it looks like this includes the situation where the lowest number node has a failed interconnect NIC; ie it has a hardware fault.
I checked this with Oracle via an iTAR quite some time ago (under 10g) and they eventually confirmed that this eviction of the healthy 2nd node is correct behaviour. In 10g, this situation would result in the remaining instance failing due to the unavailable NIC, however I did not get the chance to fully test and resolve this with Oracle.
In 11g, the alert log continuously reports the NIC's unavailability. The instance remains up, but new connections cannot be established. If the NIC is re-enabled then new connections are able to be established. At all times, srvctl status nodeapps on the surviving node and lsnrtcl show that the listener is functional.
The alert log reports the following, regarding a failed W000 or M000 process:
ospid 13165: network interface with IP address 192.168.1.1 no longer operational
requested interface 19.2.168.1.1 not found. Check output from ifconfig command
    ORA-603 : opidrv aborting process W000 ospid (16474_2083223480)
Process W000 died, see its trace file
The W000 trace file refers to an Invalid IP Address 192.168.1.1 (the interconnect ip address) obviously the source of the process dying.
Finally, if I restart the remaining instance via srvctl stop/start instance with the NIC still unavailable, the instance will allow new connections and does not report the failures of the W000/M000 process or appear to care about the failed NIC.
Before I go down the iTAR path or start posting details of the configuration, has anyone else experienced/resolved this, or can anyone else test it out?
    Thanks for any input,
    Gavin

    Thanks for your reply.
There is no NIC bonding - the interconnect is a single, dedicated Gigabit link connected via a dedicated switch: plenty of bandwidth.
I know that providing interconnect NIC redundancy would provide a fallback position on this (although how far do you go: redundant interconnect switches as well?), and that remains an option.
However that's not the point. RAC does not require a redundant interconnect - as a high-availability solution it should inherently provide a failover position that continues to provide an available instance, as it does for all other component failures.
Unless I've made a mistake in the configuration (which is very possible, but all the other successful failover scenarios suggest I haven't), then this could be a scenario that renders a 2-node cluster unavailable to new connections.

  • Single NIC card and RAC ???

    Hello all,
i 'am tryin to setup a rac with CENTOS 4.4 and open filer for testing purposes
i am following the doc http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2_iscsi.html
I have three cpu's each with ONE n/w card. Will it be possible to install oracle clusterware ?
I tried installing oracle clusterware by creating an ifcfg-eth1 file under /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ . But it was not detected as a private interface.
Is there any way to proceed with a single NIC card.

You may be able to make the NIC the private interconect, and use the VIP as the public. Not sure if that will work ... it would be tricky, and not recommended due to the amount of traffic on the NIC.
Is there some reason you can't add some cheap 10/100 NIC for the public I/F - PCI, wireless, virtually anything will do. Cards go for $10-$15, assuming you have the space.

  • Oracle RAC with operating system virtual network cards

    Hi,
I have two servers with four network cards each, two for public and two for private network. Each public card has own IP-address and the both have the virtual IP-address (from OS, not from Oracle Clusterware). Each private card has own IP-address and the both have the virtual IP-address. I have full redundancy for network cards. How should define Oracle Clusterware VIP-address for each machine?
Can somebody write me sample /etc/hosts file for this configuration?

  • Wireless NIC Cards to use with MiFi 2200

    Hello All,
I've had some issues using the Linksys Wireless-G NIC cards for wireless data access on Windows computers.
Does anyone know if there are recommended wireless card brands that work best with the MiFi 2200? Thanks for your assistance.

There are two kinds of RFID tags: Active tags, which have a battery or other internal power source, and passive tags, which have no power source and work by reflecting the energy from an RFID scanner (basically). At the energy levels and distances used for WiFi location detection, passive tags will not return a detectable signal.
Take a look at http://www.aeroscout.com/ for more info on WiFi RFID tagging.
