RAC with RAW partition

Hi all,
1. There are 3 servers. Server1 and Server2 are in cluster. There is a RAW partition on Server3. I want to use that RAW partition for using ASM to implement RAC. can it be possible ?
2. Can we create the OCR and voting disk in the local harddisks of the cluster nodes to install CRS ?
Rgrds,
Nitesh.

Yes the disks /raw partitions are on shared storage then it should be possible. Please check the Oracle installation guides for step by step help with the configuration.

  • Doubt with raw partition ASM

    Hi Gurus,
Have a doubt regarding the raw partitions being used in ASM.
1.Is raw partition being used  only applicable to linux platform , or can it be done on other plaform as well
2.Is it correct if I say if a diskgroup is created with single  raw disk with external  redundancy , we are saying the oracle need not do the redundancy and we have set up redundancy for the raw partition at lus/os level.
3.what in general is better asmlib/raw partition for management of ASM.
    Thanks

    Hi,
1.Is raw partition being used  only applicable to linux platform , or can it be done on other plaform as well.
==>> Raw partition is not supported 11G onwards .
On linux ASM support both types of devices ,block and character.
For other unix version,ASM supports character devices.
2.Is it correct if I say if a diskgroup is created with single  raw disk with external  redundancy ,
we are saying the oracle need not do the redundancy and we have set up redundancy for the raw partition at lus/os level.
==>> Yes,in case of external redundancy ASM does not do mirroring .So,it depends upon OS level redundancy.
if you use normal redundancy ,ASM will do mirroring alongwith stripping at ASM level.
3.what in general is better asmlib/raw partition for management of ASM.
===>> ASMlib devices are created upon partitioned device .
And ASM will use ASMlib API to access those devices and do IOs.
For Raw partition ASM will use system calls directly to access those devices.
      Advantages of ASMlib,
+ ASMlib will keep device persistency across reboot
+ Use ASMlib API for processing IOs in batches
-- This give slightly better performance .
If you use UDEV rules ,then it will give device persistency across reboot ,but use
      system calls for IOs directly.
For raw partitions ,you need to maintain rawservices also.
and it limits you to have 256 devices .
But ASM can use upto first 10000 disks and maximum size can be of 2Tb in non-exadata.
With these limitation and advantages,it is better to use ,
Udev rules and ASMlib compared to raw ...
while comparing ASMlib with Udev ,they are almost same, with ASMlib have slight advantage.

  • Is this a bug in APEX 3.0.1 Installation  RAC database with RAW device???

    Hello,
I am getting the following error when I try to complete approval process.

I checked the alert log for error here is the error in the alert log file.
ORA-1119 signalled during: CREATE TABLESPACE FLOW_1 DATAFILE '//./FLOW_1.dbf'..
and i found the syntax for create tablespace was wrong.
To create a tablespace in RAC with RAW device environment under windows.
it should have forward black slash instead of backward slash "/" without .dbf extension.
so, I changed the syntax i was able to create tablespace through sqlplus.
When APEX tool try to create this tablespace it throws this error..
    Old: CREATE TABLESPACE FLOW_1 DATAFILE

Is it a bug in APEX 3.0.1.??
Is anyone installed APEX in RAC ??

    Hi,
One observation, Apex is switching the Session ID after one got killed ? I was working on Apex page with browse Item to test open cursor count,
after killing the SID (227) on which the open cursor count was getting increase, it APEX automatically switches to new SID(149) for that session.
Now the problem is even if I have two SID's and one hits the maximum open cursor count, It is not switching to other SID instead the whole application becomes unavailable.

  • Uninstall Oracle Culster (RAC) & Oracle Database with Raw File System (LVM)

    Hello,
I have configured "Oracle RAC" with "Database" on Hp Unix 11.23 Platform. The shared storage is based on "raw" file system, which has mounted through "SAN" Storage. We have used total 18 LV (logical volumes) for oracle & clusterware.
By mistaken, I have configured wrong "Public, Private IP Address & Virtual IP Addresses" during RAC installation, thus my oracle "crs" is not working perfectly. So, is it possible to modify the "public, private & Virtual" IP Addresses? If Yes, provide me the step by step modification link.
Moreover, I would like to know certain steps to uninstall entire "Oracle Clusterware & Database." Kindly do the needful the "uninstallation" steps & is it necessary to remove & recreate LVM partitions, on which "oracle crs & database" has installed?
    Advanced Thanks,

    Hi,
You haven't told anything about version...
By mistaken, I have configured wrong "Public, Private IP Address & Virtual IP Addresses" during RAC installation, thus my oracle "crs" is not working perfectly. So, is it possible to modify the "public, private & Virtual" IP Addresses? If Yes, provide me the step by step modification link.BTW, this thread has information that can drive You to this change:
    Re: Is it possible?
Moreover, I would like to know certain steps to uninstall entire "Oracle Clusterware & Database." Kindly do the needful the "uninstallation" steps &Again... No versions, but You this thread can drive You to this
How to cleanup / remove RAC installation (CRS,RDBMS,ASM)
is it necessary to remove & recreate LVM partitions, on which "oracle crs & database" has installed?I don't think so. If all steps on uninstalling procedure don't work, You'll can try "zero" the information on the raw device using dd.
    Hope it helps,

  • Why RAW partitions are visible only on one node in RAC?

I am having 2 node RAC on Windows 2003 Server.
Can anybody tell me why the RAW partitions are visible on RAC-2 but not on RAC-1.
I Shutted down RAC-2, and I thought all the RAW devices will appear in RAC-1, but it didn't work, it is displaying only LOCAL DRIVE.
    Why???

I am using Microsoft Virtual Server and I have configured SCSI type shared disks.
    I executed the given command
    C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\crs\bin>cluvfy comp ssa -n rac-1,rac-2
Result : Shared storage check was successful on both the nodes..
Both the nodes are working properly but I want to know the reason 'why the shared disks are not visible on node1'?
    Thanks

  • RAC with ASM and shared disks?

    Hi all,
Can someone clarify this little point please. If I use ASM as my storage with a RAC database, I have to configure these nodes to shared disks. At least this is what the UG says ...
When you create a disk group for a cluster or add new disks to an existing clustered disk group, you only need to prepare the underlying physical storage on shared disks. The shared disk requirement is the only substantial difference between using ASM in a RAC database compared to using it in a single-instance Oracle database. ASM automatically re-balances the storage load after you add or delete a disk or disk group.
With my 9i databases, I used HCAMP to allow for concurrent VG access among the nodes. My questions are ...
    1) How can I share this storage as stated above without using HACMP? My understanding is with 10g I no longer have to use it.
    2) Can Oracle's clusterware be used to share storage? I have not seen any indication that it does.
    3) Does this mean I still have to use HCAMP with 10g crs to allow shared storage?
    Thank you

"...meaning visible to all the participating nodes, which you don't need HACMP..."
This is one step forward, but still not clear. On unix, storage is presented to ASM as raw volumes. As such, how can these volumes be visible on all nodes without using HCAMP (or whatever 3rd party clusterware you are using). Presenting raw volumes on several nodes is something that is not done at OS level without using some clusterware functionality.
I do understand that storage or LUNs can be shared at the SAN fabric level. But then, these LUNs are carved in bug chunks and I would like to be able to allocate storage at much granular level using raw partitions.
So all in all, here are my questions ...
    1) On unix platforms, can ASM disks be LUNs, raw volumes, or may be both?
    2) If raw volumes, how are these shared (or made visible) without using 3rd party clusterware? Having managed 9i RAC, it was the function of HACMP to make these volumes visible on all nodes, otherwise, we had to imp/exp VGs on all nodes to make them visible.
    Thank you

  • How to share raw partitions on Mac OS X Server ?

    Hello,
I'm trying to build a RAC Database with 3 nodes. I have created 2 raw partitions for the OCR and CRS Voting Disk on the local hard drive of node 1.
I read the documentation concerning how to install a RAC Database on Mac OS X Server, but I don't know how to share the 2 raws partitions between my nodes.
Anyone could explain me how to share those raw partitions accross all nodes ?
    Regards,
    Bob

    Good morning Bob,
I guess you refer the the linux firewire solution for rac. It would surprize me if that works for the mac since on linux they created special kernel modules for it to be able to run. When connecting 3 servers you would need a firewire switch. From what I have seen sofar, the mac mounts the firewire drives exclusively and the (linux)kernel modifictions change that to shared allowing multiple servers to connect.
For storage I would definately go for ASM. It makes you choice for storage hardware a bit less critical. Let oracle do what otherwise a highend SAN solution would do. Why are you building the RAC ? If it has a serious goal, get a xserve-RAID. I don't think you can get a better price/performance ratio. What other storage hardware do you have available ? (netapp would be fine ;-))

    Ronald

Do the install and then when done, rename the disks from block devices back to character devices - there's a Metalink note that covers how to do that. Sorry - not in the office and do not have the Metalink note at hand. However, have used this approach successfully with 3 RAC installation (RHEL4 and RHEL5) in recent months.

  • Binding Luns in red hat linux5 while installing RAC with ASM

    Hi All,
I am in the process of installing RAC with ASM. Our OS team have presented the shared LUN's on the cluster nodes. Now that i need to bound/map them to the raw partitions. I did the below step. Could you please let me know the next steps to be done for the binding to be completed?
    # cat /etc/udev/rules.d/60-raw.rules
    # This file and interface are deprecated.
    # Applications needing raw device access should open regular
    # block devices with O_DIRECT.
    # Enter raw device bindings here.
    # An example would be:
    # ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="sda", RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 %N"
    # to bind /dev/raw/raw1 to /dev/sda, or
    # ACTION=="add", ENV{MAJOR}=="8", ENV{MINOR}=="1", RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw2 %M %m"
    # to bind /dev/raw/raw2 to the device with major 8, minor 1.
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="/dev/emcpowerg", RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/OCR.dbf %N"
    ACTION=="add", KERNEL=="/dev/emcpowerd", RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/VOTING.dbf %N"

  • How to create raw partition in a local zone?

I tried to search for an answer for my question, but I spent a week and still no luck.
What I am trying to do is to create raw partitions for Sybase in a local zone. I tried to add device and set match to the block and raw device.
However, when I tried to do "format", I got core dumped. When I did zpool create, I got permission denied. Any advice?
    zonecfg:z001> info
    zonename: z001
    zonepath: /export/ZONE/z001
    autoboot: true
    pool:
    limitpriv:
    fs:
    dir: /shared/tmp
    special: /tmp
    raw not specified
    type: lofs
    options: []
    net:
    address: 10.110.1.2
    physical: e1000g1
    device
    match: /dev/rdsk/c6t60060160DF2413003E2F0C2DF945DC11d0
    device
    match: /dev/dsk/c6t60060160DF2413003E2F0C2DF945DC11d0

You can't manipulate pools directly in a non-global zone. I'm not sure if you can run 'format'. You can use at least a limited amount of globbing. You might want to put a '*' at the end of your matched device name.
You can hand off a raw partition via 'match' and put it under UFS control, or with recent versions of Solaris Express, you can delegate a portion of a ZFS filesystem to the zone.
    See the ZFS administration guide:
    http://www.opensolaris.org/os/community/zfs/docs/zfsadmin.pdf
Especially the section on using ZFS in a zone (page 171). Note the guide is for the most recent version of ZFS in OpenSolaris. Versions available in Solaris 10 may not have all the same features.

  • How to change permissions on a raw partition in ZFS file to write in zone

I created ZFS file system and create a raw partition( size 100m) in it like below.
    // fnzone0 - name of zpool
    global# zfs create -V 100m fnzone0/data0
    global# zfs set reservatiion=100m fnzone0/data0
    zonecfg:zone1>add device
    zonecfg:zone1:device> set match=/dev/zvol/rdsk/fnzone0/data0
    zonecfg:zone1:device>end
I would like to write to '/dev/zvol/rdsk/fnzone0/data0' from the local zone.
What permission should I change in the global zone and local zone?
    Additional question:
Can I export zpool 'fnzone0' to a local zone and create a raw partition like above without createing filesystems?
    Thank you.
    -Yong

It was not a problem. The raw partition with the soft partition or ZFS filesystem works fine in the local zone.
    Thank you for your help.

I'm by no means a windows expert so I might be totally wrong here, but here goes.
You have to refer to the raw device by its name in the datafile clause. If you use a different name then the o/s can't find the device. Simple as that.

  • Does managing Oracle 10g RAC with ASM require full root access?

We currently have three entirely separate support areas, Unix, Storage and DBA. We're now considering using Oracle 10g RAC with ASM and as part of the assessment trying to work out if we can still draw similar support boundaries. I know that installing RAC and configuring ASM requires root access but will DBA continue to need root access to manage & support RAC? If so, does anyone know if the commands they need can be RBAC'd or if we just need to share root access going forwards. I've had a look at a number of docs including http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/rac.102/b14197/toc.htm. which is fairly informative but none of them seem to mention the requirement for root access on Solaris. I'm guessing they just assume that it's available, but that's not generally the case in our environment.
    All advice / info welcome!

I would have thought that the only reason you would need root access once RAC and ASM had been set up would be to add more disks to the ASM configuration. This would be needed to change the ownership on the raw LUNs or to make additions to metasets (SVM/Oban) or diskgroups (VxVM/CVM). Beyond that, I can't imagine needing root access.
I'm sure others will chime in if they can think of other reasons!

  • RAC with ASM

    Hi,
We will be implementing oracle 10g RAC with ASM.
Just wondering how many production systems are running on ASM.
Are there any known issues with ASM for performance and maintaince.
    Please advice.
    Thanks in advance.

Check more information about the difference between OCFS and ASM in metalink doc
Automatic Storage Management (ASM) and Oracle Cluster File System (OCFS) in Oracle10g
    Doc ID: Note:255359.1
ASM provides many advantages over pure raw device, I believe it's fairly standard to use ASM together with RAC in 10g. And perhaps some files on OCFS2 that ASM doesn't handle.
