RAC without virtual ip address?

Hi,
Our main router crashed a month ago, the network guys said that it “might!!!!” be caused by the RAC hosts flapping because the public interface NIC has two IP addresses (the main IP and the Virtual IP). They are pushing us to get rid of the Virtual IP address on the RAC nodes. Can you do that? What is the ramification of doing this?
Thanks

Just spoke to one of the top network specialists we have.
He confirmed that two IP stack on a single NIC cannot cause a router to crash. He said that the crash however does not sound unusual - typically caused by malformed and mangled packets. And he said that these were almost always purposefully fully constructed with the intention being to down a router.
The router choking on such packets are also usually also a 'known cause' by the manufacturer - and the manufacturer will have full details on root cause analysis.
He said he would put a sniffer down to capture these malformed/mangled packets for investigation and analysis when the router crashes again.
The culprits he mentioned - some kind of network virus, or someone "playing silly buggers" on the network.
My network experience is out of date and not that vast - but everything I've heard from him confirms my view that your network administrators are either idiots, or trying to shift blame for some nefarious reason to your RAC.
Either way, I would not trust anything they have to say, without them providing hard evidence.

  • Virtual ip addresses for RDS sessions

I have a Win2k8 R2 Rds server with virtual IP enabled per session.
I created a new dhcp scope for it
But the problem I'm faced with is as follows
when I run an ipconfig on the first session I get 192.168.10.6
And then when I do the same for terminal two (T2) I get 192.168.10.6
    192.168.10.7
Ipconfig for terminal session 3 192.168.10.6
    192.168.10.7
    192.168.10.8
Ipconfig for terminal session 4 192.168.10.6
    192.168.10.7
    192.168.10.8
    192.168.10.9
Ipconfig for terminal session 5 192.168.10.6

    192.168.10.8
    192.168.10.9
    192.168.10.10
I thought I was only meant to get two ip addresses? the RDS server's physical address and the virtual ip address.
I've tried setting static ip adddresses and via a registry fix which allows you to specify a start and end of the allocated ip range including a subnetmask.
I've tried the same via a local gpo on the RDS server without avail.
Looking forward to hearing back from everyone. Thanks!!

    Thanks for your response.
I can now see the different ip addresses assigned per session id. Is there a way I can get the thin client to display the ip address as per what I'm seeing in Application
    and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/TerminalServices-TSAppSrv-TSVIP\Admin?
We have a plugin which looks for an rds session id's unique ip address. but due to the multiple ip addresses displaying. The plugin wont work.
is there a way I can get the ipconfig to show only the newly assigned ip address.
Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

  • Virtual Host Addressing in Oracle9iAS

    Hi,
We have Oracle9iAS 9.0.2.3 installed on Windows-2000 (SP-4) OS. Both the Instances of Oracle9iAS i.e INFRA & Mid-Tier is installed on the same machine. Our applications developed in Forms/Reports9i is deployed successfully on Mid-Tier and working OK over web with URL:: http://<Host IP>:7779/<app_name>/myprog.html
[HTTP server running on Port 7779, <app_name> is application delployed in our OC4J Instance & myprog.html is first page which opens by above URL is kept in its relevant directory of deployed application]
Now, i want to create a Virtual Host Address for my application that is running by HTTP Server in Mid-Tier Instance so that above URL could be avoided and intutive name can be given for the URL. I do not wish to give IP, Port etc. in URL for opening my applicaiton deployed on Mid-Tier. I wish to open like IGFL.XEXP.COM (The relevant DNS entry is already placed in Main Domain Controller machine, which will redirect to this HOST).
I checked the documents on Metalink and followed the DocID: Note: 231351.1. I followed the steps of configuraiton without webcache setup, but this is not working properly and i am unable to trace it...Why so.?? Here, i am specifying my customized document root directory instead of AS default directory.
Can anyone give me steps how to do it or help me identifying what i am missing. People claim that it works, but i do not hv any idea and doing it for the first time. You help is needed....Expecting your response.

Sounds like you just want the URL to not have the port listed? If so, just change the listen port in the httpd.conf file or change it in Web Cache (if you are using Web Cache).
Plus, you need to register a DNS entry in your DNS server to map the IP address to a name. You don't need to do anything in 9iAS for this part.

  • Cluster Virtual IP addresses - cluvfy utility error

    Hi,
I've just about to install Oracle 10.2.01 Clusterware on a 2 node RAC running RHEL4 AS. I'm basically following Jeffery Hunters Guide - http://www.oracle.com/technology/pub/articles/hunter_rac10gr2.html
Each node has 2 ethernet cards - eth0 as public and eth1 as private. The hosts files contain entries for these, and a 2nd set of public IPs for use as VIPs
I've run the cluvfy utility for pre cluster installation checks and I'm getting a VIP error. The utility finds suitable interfaces for interconnects, but fails to find suitable interfaces for VIPs.
Has anyone any ideas what checks cluvfy is running and what might make them fail?
    Thanks,

  • Setup Multiple WLE and groups on virtual IP addresses

I need to setup multiple instances of WLE in our Solaris development environment so each developer can have their own servers running without interferance from other developers. Concept is each developer manages their own ubb file and tmload's their version. I have multiple virtual IP addresses setup on the Sun box so each WLE will run 'on' different IP addresses.Comments? Will I have license issues?

    hello,
you can implement this using the following oracle command line utilities.. crs_profile, crs_register, crs_setperm. i have done it several times myself .. here is an example..
    as root user:
    1. create the resource:
$CRS_HOME/bin/crs_profile -create rnora1.vip_dg -t application -a /appl/crs/bin/usrvip -o oi=eth5,ov=10.204.51.20,on=255.255.255.192 (mind that oi=<physical nic name>, oi=<new_vip>, on=<vip_subnet>. Of course the new vip should be in the same subnet as the physical nic.)
    2. register the resource to the cluster:
    $CRS_HOME/crs_register vip_dg
    3. give permitions to the oracle user to handle the resource:
    $CRS_HOME/bin/crs_setperm vip_dg -u user:oracle:r-x
then, executing crs_stat -t command you should see in the output the created resource "vip_dg"
if you want to have a second listener register to the cluster and listening on that vip you just created (as user anilkjha requested in previous post) the you can just run netca
in order to create for you the second listener resources and add them to the cluster as well..
mind that for some stupid reason netca do not see the second vip and by default he tries to create a second listener in the first vip. just ignore the errors-warnings and create the resource.
then manually edit the listener.ora file so that the new listener entries reflect to the second vip you had just created before..

  • Changing Hyper-V host and cluster virtual IP addresses to new subnet/VLAN

I have a 2 node Hyper-V 2012 R2 failover cluster, managed by System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012 R2, and I would like to change the IP addresses of the hosts and the cluster, in order to move them to a new subnet and VLAN. The existing and new subnets
are able to route to each other so all hosts will still be able to communicate throughout the parts of the process where they may be on separate subnets. There is also a dedicated cluster heartbeat network on its own subnet and VLAN that I am not altering
    in any way.
The 2 hosts are configured with 4 nics in a team, with dedicated virtual interfaces for each of the following:
    -Live Migration
    -Cluster Heartbeating
-Host management/general traffic (the cluster virtual IP address is also on the same subnet as these interfaces).
It is the host management/general traffic addresses that I want to change. The interfaces were created and configured with the Add-VMNetworkAdapter, New-NetIPAddres and Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan commands.
Please advise if the following process is correct:
    1) Evacuate all the VMs from the first host to be changed and put it in maintenance mode.
    2) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapter to change the name of the interface (the current name refers to the VLAN it's on)
    3) Use Set-NetIPAddress to change the IP address and gateway of the interface as appropriate
    4) Use Set-VMNetworkAdapterVlan to set the VLAN ID
    5) Take the host out of maintenance mode and move all VMs off the other host
    6) Repeat above steps on the other host
I know that I will then need to change the cluster virtual IP address, but I have no idea how to do this or where to look for that setting. Please advise!
    Cheers.

  • Windows Network Load Balancing - Virtual MAC Address

    Hi All,
I have environment that running 2 Exchange 2010 server with CASHT and join windows network load balancing as a node.
    My question is,

    Thanks for response,
    Best Regards,

    Hi Henry Stefanus,
The NLB work mechanism will not change whether what higher application we used and I am not very familiar with Exchange NLB architecture, may the following KB and article
    may help you.
When you use the unicast method, all cluster hosts share an identical unicast MAC address. Network Load Balancing overwrites the original MAC address of the cluster adapter
with the unicast MAC address that is assigned to all the cluster hosts.
When you use the multicast method, each cluster host retains the original MAC address of the adapter. In addition to the original MAC address of the adapter, the adapter is
assigned a multicast MAC address, which is shared by all cluster hosts. The incoming client requests are sent to all cluster hosts by using the multicast MAC address.

  • Can SAPSprint support the printers without own IP address(USB printer)?

    Dear all,
We want to switch SAPlpd to the new tool SAPSprint for Server based printing.
Our SAP version is 4.6C. We has SAPlpd on our print server (address is 192.168.214.222).
We have two kinds of printers.
One kind are network printers with own IP address.
The other kind are USB printers without own IP address, need to be connected to user's computer.
Now we have installed SAPSprint on a new server(address is 192.168.214.223).
We found that it is OK for network printer.
For example we have a network printer named NP1, NP1's output device in sap system(SPAD) is named NP01,
Host spool access method is 'S',
our old print server(SAPlpd installed on it) address is 192.168.214.222,
the new print server(SAPSprint installed on it) address is 192.168.214.223.
We install NP1 on the new print server(install driver for NP1 during this process),
then change the config of Destination host of output device NP01 in SPAD,
change it from 192.168.214.222 to 192.168.214.223.
(the config of Host printer we use the same name NP1,no need to change, also use Host spool access method 'S')
It is OK for NP1's using,
the SAPSprint replace SAPlpd to provide sap print service on the new server for NP1.
But for the USB printers, the SAPSprint seem not support.
We have a USB printer named UP1, UP1 is connect to a user computer named CP1,
UP1 is installed on CP1(install driver for UP1 on CP1),
and set UP1 for share as name UP1,
UP1's output device in sap system(SPAD) is named UP01,
Host spool access method is 'S'.
We add the printer UP1 on the old server(address is 192.168.214.222),
notice it is add not istall, printer UP1 is installed on CP1,
it will show as a name 'UP1 on CP1' in 'Printers and Fax' view.
our config of Host printer in SPAD is
    CP1\UP1,
the config of Destination host is 192.168.214.222.
This setting is OK for SAPlpd environment. We can use UP1 sucessfully for sap print.
But when also add the printer  on the new printer server(address is 192.168.214.223),
and change the config of Destination host from 192.168.214.222 to 192.168.214.223.
We found that this setting doesn't work in SAPSprint environment.
It will reply 'SAPlpd err'.In fact we are using SAPSprint on server 192.168.214.223.
We found the below important information in sapnote 894444:
All printers that SAPSprint uses must be installed on the SAPSprint computer.
In our case, the SAPSprint computer is the new server 192.168.214.223
Network printer NP1 is installed on  the new server 192.168.214.223, NP1 can work well.
USB printer UP1 not installed on  the new server 192.168.214.223,
it is installed on user computer named CP1, and is set share,
we add UP1 on the new server 192.168.214.223, UP1 doesn't work.
Is this means SAPSprint doesn't support the USB printers (without own IP address) in Server based printing conditon?
Any experienced please give your advice.
    Regards
    Allen
Edited by: allenGG on Sep 9, 2011 12:00 PM

In fact, finally we found SAPSprint can support the USB printers, but not good and stable enough.
Sometimes the SAP print request of USB printers not printed out, we didn't find why it happened.
And for the network printers, we found it is good working in SAPSprint environment.
We have more than 10 usb printers. They are used for our production department which is 24 hours running.
Since each printer is only used for each user computer(not for share),
so at the end we use front end printing method for these printers.

  • Virtual IP Addresses

    Hi Everyone !
My weblogic server listens on a virtual IP address. When the HttpProxyServlet proxies to another weblogic server, it doesn't make the outgoing proxy using the virtual IP address. It uses the the actual IP address assigned to the unix box and not the virtual IP address my weblogic server listens to. This has been confirmed from the firewall logs.
This is important because the firewall requires source IP and destination IP in its rules.
Is there a way to force weblogic server to use the virtual IP address for outgoing calls/requests.
    Thanks,
    Eddie

    Thanks for your response.
I can now see the different ip addresses assigned per session id. Is there a way I can get the thin client to display the ip address as per what I'm seeing in Application
    and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/TerminalServices-TSAppSrv-TSVIP\Admin?
We have a plugin which looks for an rds session id's unique ip address. but due to the multiple ip addresses displaying. The plugin wont work.
is there a way I can get the ipconfig to show only the newly assigned ip address.
Thank you for your response, much appreciated.

  • Programs that require a network connection won't work because there is no virtual IP address available for this session.

Programs that require a network connection won't work because there is no virtual IP address available for this session.  Per application IP virtualization is enabled.
There are in fact available IP address's within the dhcp scope.  Before I dig to deep into root cause.. Could the problem be RDS CAL licensing running out, or isn't that not a symptom of my error message?

    Hi,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
As per my research, there is no any issue related to RDS CAL licensing. Prior to the issue which you are facing, there are some basic setting which need to configure.
Application Compatibility – Turn on Remote Desktop IP virtualization
Some applications require a unique IP address, which is by default logically not the case if the application is running on RD Session Host. To solve this issue, Remote Desktop IP Virtualization is introduced. With this setting you enable the IP virtualization
feature. When enabling this setting you need to specify if the virtual IP is provided per session or per program. When using per program you need to define the executable to which an IP address should be configured. Desktop IP virtualization also needs the
    configuration of the next setting.
Application Compatibility – Select the network adapter to be used for Remote Desktop IP Virtualization
When you need to use Remote Desktop IP virtualization configuring this setting is mandatory. You need to specify the IP address of the Network Interface Card which should be used for this feature. Besides the IP address you need also to specify the network
mask using the slash notation, for example 192.168.77.201/24.
Application Compatibility – Do not use Remote Desktop Session Host server IP address when virtual IP address is not available

  • Sun cluster: virtual IP address

    Hi,
What is the virtual IP address and how to configure it?
For example, should it be defined in /etc/hosts? dns?
    Thank you,

[[[s this correct to have apache HA?]]]
Apache can be set up as a failover resource (so it is active only on one node at a time) or a scalable resource (where it would be active on multiple nodes at the same time).
[[[Just an aside question: HAStoragePlus is NFS sharing? What is difference between NFS resource and mount resource (I saw Veritas differentiate between them)? In case I set up a shared disk, is it NFS or mount resource?]]]
HAStoragePlus is not NFS sharing. HAStoragePlus let's you create HA storage (it's called HAStoragePlus because there was an earlier generation data service (aka Clustering Agent a-la VCS) called HAStorage). This will let you wrap a shared storage device and fail it back and forth between multiple nodes of the cluster.
NFS sharing has to be handled using the SUNW.nfs Data service (or in other words, the NFS clustering agent) (ie only if you want to set up NFS as a HA service). Otherwise, you can use standard NFS.
Mount resource is (i'm guessing here) any resource that can be mounted. In other words, a Filesystem.
NFS resource is a resource that is shared out via NFS.
[[[Also, a basic question: The shared disk should not be mounted in /etc/vfstab. Correct? It should be only present when doing format on each node. Right? It is SCS that manages the mounting of the file system? This should be up before testing apache HA…no?]]]
That is correct. Sun Cluster will handle mounting/unmounting the filesystem and importing/deporting the disk set (in Veritas world it is called a Disk group).
When you build your cluster resource group (aka VCS Service group), you will have to build the dependency tree (just how you would in VCS).
    1) Create empty RG
    2) Create HAStoragePlus Resource
    3) Create Logical Hostname resource
    4) Create Apache resource
    5) define dependency of Logical hostname (Virtual IP) and HAStoragePlus (filesystem) so that apache can start.
At each stage, you can test whether the RG is working as it should before proceeding to the next level.

If you are using single ACE SM in a cat6k box, and you are seeing duplicate MAC, its normal. Cat6k Supervisor is L2 Adjacent with ACE, Any traffic received by Supervisor in VLAN 810 will be sent to ACE and then ACE will determine which VIP that packet is going to.
Real Problem will come when you are using multiple ACE modules in Same Chassis or you are doing Chassis to Chassis ACE Redundancy. In such situation your Cat6k Switch will have duplicate MAC entries.
To avoid this, you need to keep your Contexts in diffrent context groups in each Module i.e something like this
    ft group 5
      peer 1
      priority X
      associate-context default3
      inservice
