Race to Infinity...

Have a read into this wrongly?
Basically all people need to do is sign up to the race to infinity website and the top 5 will be bumped to the top of BT's upgrade list....
The issue I see is its not really worth bothering to do.
My exchange is showing as having 20,841 connections, at the moment 169 out of the 20,841 have voted for it which gives Weymouth a total of 0.81% !
BathEaston exchange has 2436 connections, of which they currently have 98 votes giving them a total of 4.02%
Batheaston is just an example, but if you live in an area that has a relatively low amount of connections, it is far easier to get people to vote, my point being that large towns with large amounts of connections stand no chance at all.
But maybe that's just me and my half empty glass talking

mine should of gone in April. then it got delayed to September 31st, and as that does not exist, they have shifted it til 31st december 2010. the infinity box is at the bottom of my road, and has a newly tarmac'ed track to it, so there is always hope.
just gone through to vote, which says i already have infinity. on going to the infinity page, the give me a date of 29th October 2010 - or tomorrow
i am aready registered, but have yet to have a confirmation email.
i hop tomorrow comes tomorrow ...................
welcome to the world of last wednesday week.
there's now't wrong with 2 cans and a piece of string. at certain times, it is often faster.

  • What was the point of the race to infinity???

Why did BT bother with the race to infinity when exchanges that placed near the top will never see infinity, yet exchanges of a similar size that placed near the bottom are getting upgraded within the next few months.  It was just a cheap trick to get peoples hopes up when they had no intention of listening to what people wanted.

So what about other exchanges that placed in the top 50?  My exchange was up there yet I have been told I will never see a fast speed, yet a similar sized exchange that only got 81 votes in the race is due to be upgraded.  How does that work?
Are you talking about your exchange or your local cabinet

  • Race to Infinity: Results cast on Percentage and n...

Beginning to think this was a poor thought out incentive from the start.
From what i've read it works out the winners will be the top 5 areas with the most percentage, our area has 15k-16k people, we have roughly 16% of people voted, looking at the top areas they have mostly 1200-1500 people and have 60-80%..
It would appear that the areas with fewer people are destined to win this..kinda sucks as we are not even penned in for Infinity and god only knows when we'll get it.
They could've split it into groups i.e depending on the number of people that live within each area, i.e 1000 - 5000. 5000 - 10000...-10000 - 15000  that way at least areas with large amount of people would stand a chance of getting a slot...

The race to infinity was just a cheap publicity stunt designed to get peoples hopes up.  My exchange came 35th in the race (out of 5600 so top 1%) yet we will never see anything faster than 0.25Mbps with BT.  They just ran the race as a 'look at what we are giving to those that don't need it' just to rub our noses in it.  I hope that after BT do all the work on these exchanges that showed no interest, that the people use other services such as TT fibre or virgin media for a faster speed at a lower price.  My area on the other hand has no access to VM so BT could have got 100% of the customers if they had listened to the results, but it seems they would rather give it to people that can already get 20Mbps for a fraction of the price.  Maybe that is why uptake is only 15% in these areas.  you have made a big mistake BT and it is the customers that are paying for it.  Atleast Ian Livingston got his exchange done first though, nothing like being CEO of a company and using customers money to give yourself a better product first is there.

  • Vote in The Race to Infinity

Is there any need to have a competition just so a very small % are going to win.looking at my area we have a total of 310 votes for a population of about 100.000 and Fibre here is limited again to the select few.
Does a population of 100.000 not count anyway in getting fibre.
Its all very welll boasting about having 40-100mb connections  but what about the customers like me cant even get 3mb on a upto 20mb connection.

the UK are well behind most of europe when it comes to BB speed, i game online and alot of our clan members are across the sea. They are always rubbing it in that their internet speeds are loads better than ours, although Virgin cable users dont suffer the same as phoneline customers in the UK. BT are all about money, wait til they publish their end of year proffits. I bet they are massive, so why not put some cash back into there service? Its kind of a monopoly a bit like the BBC and the TV license, you have to have it and they know it. Come on BT pull your finger out, your service is outdated and falling apart. Dont patronise us with "its a competition vote for fibre optic" just sort out the **bleep** preastoric network

  • Can i get bt infinity or when will it be available...

hi all can any one tell me if the padstow area south west is having any plans to enable bt infinity please i am not far from the exchange either not sure this is in the right place to ask but couldint find anything on this but when i went to vote  and place my details it said great new its already coming to your area  but no other info dates or anything?

    my exchane info

    78 non-residential premises.
    Exchange name:     Padstow
    Exchange code:     WWPADS

any info would be apreciated sorry if this is in wrong place of the forum
    thank you

I think Padstow is part of the BT project to bring high speed BB to Cornwall as money was made available from some european pot of gold and then BT added some more, got no timescales have a read on this link at the BBC.
It also explains fibre to the cab (FTTC) and fibre to the premises (FTTP)

  • BT selling a service that they know they can't pro...

I had no replies to my previous message about our intermittent broadband - or lack of it.
At present we have had no broadband since Sunday (currently using Vodafone GPRS - our only alternative). Our connection is fine until the phone rings, then it disappears usually until the next day, but not this time. Our neighbours have similar problems, one has two lines, one just for broadband. We seem to have reached the end of the line with BT. They say that we are too far from the exchange and they can't/won't do anything to improve our service. When we signed up for broadband, no-one told us that we would have problems, yet as soon as we have problems, BT's only answer is that they will cancel the contract. Why did they sell us the service in the first place ??
Race to Infinity - what a joke All we want is our 240kbps
Any suggestions ?? Thanks for listening

I don't think it's classed as misselling from BT's perspective. They never know for definite whether a long line service will work or not.
In your case, I imagine they sold you the service with the best of intentions and unfrotunately it just hasn't worked. BT have admitted that there is nothing further they can do and are willing to cancel the service and cancel the contract. You will probably be entitled to a rental rebate since your problems will be logged with the faults helpdesk.
As far as changing the wiring to copper is concerned, I imagine that BT will just class this as not being commercially viable. They are running a business after all. I don't think that any business would spend thousands upon thousands of pounds just so satisfy a handful of customers for the sake of a few pounds a month profit. It sounds quite harsh, but BT are running a business after all.
i definitely sympathise with you though. My broadband was down for a couple of weeks not that long ago and I didn't know what to do with myself. It was amazing the realisation of just how much I use the internet on a daily basis. I just found myself watching DVDs constantly and ringing my friends to see who wanted to go out for a pint..
I hope you find a solution to your problems soon. I don't know if fibre will be rolled out in your area soon or not. Hopefully FTTC will fix things, but that could be ages away.

Now you know why Malvern tops the Race to Infinity for votes.
My parents are in Malvern Wells and they never get  more than 1.1 Mbps.
Malvern & district aren't exactly rural, yet the whole region in general gets poor speeds.

  • New Infinity Order - As it happens !!!

I've just ordered Infinity (today) and I thought I'd track the order etc here for others to see 'live' what to expect:
As a precursor, I've had BT ADSL for many years, and no end of problems with the Indian call centre, but great experience from the users and mods on this site - the mods are the reason I'm staying with BT instead of switching to TalkTalk...
In Autumn last year my Infinity availability showed as available from end of Jan 2013 (and confirmed by email from Openreach), but in Winter this changed to an earliest date of End of March 2013 - not a problem, just have to wait. This weekend this changed to now available to order, so today I did just that.
My current set-up is adsl2+ unlimited, with minimal phone + BTVision unlimited. I wanted Infinity 2, + minimal phone + BTVision with Youview box. I have 5 months to run on current contract.
04/02/2013 - Called BT to upgrade. Approx 5 minutes on hold, but ok - everyone gets busy. Spoke to John who seemed very knowledgeable about his products and also very helpful. I was put on hold a couple of times for a couple of minutes, but eventually we agreed the following package, with prices as advertised:
    New contract:
Phone - 12 months, prepaid so save £56.40.
    Broadband: Infinity 2 unlimited (including non-throttled P2P), estimate 59Mbps down / 20Mbps up.
TV: TV Unlimited as we had before, but with new Youview box - free, but with £49 activation fee. (Not sure what he activation fee is for as I'm already on BTVision - advice happily received if this can be waived, but not a deal breaker if I have to pay it).
Installation date agreed as pm (1pm to 6pm) on wed 20/02/2013.
John could not confirm if my old BTV box and Youview box would work together, but confirmed that BT want to aim for multi-room so suspected that at some time this would stop working if it even started.
John also confirmed that my new youview box should work fine with powerline adaptors in the same way as my current BTV box.
First problem was that John can order everything except the Youview box - there is apparently a problem doing this for existing customers - John confirmed he'll call back within 1 or 2 days with the Youview order added on. I confirmed to him that this is necessary for me to complete my order - I won't accept the Infinity package with a 12 month contract then have to pay for a youview box.
    Cancellation terms stated as:
I can cancel the broadband/TV service up to 17th Feb.
7 days to cancel the prepaid phone line. After this I'm tied into the BT line for 12 months which implicitly means I can't change broadband suppliers because they normally require you take their phone line rental. This is the critical path, so if my free youview box doesn't appear on my order page before this then I need to cancel everything and then re-order the complete set.
I'll let you know when/if John calls back and what the update is on the youview box and also the install date.
    Cheers,
    Alan.

    20/02/2013 - Sixth undate.
Hopefully the last update. I was given the 1pm to 6pm slot and the Openreach engineer (Dave) called at approx 2pm, explained what he needed to do at the cabinet and that he'd be with me in 30 mins.
Dave was the same engineer who fixed my line in October and also fitted the new faceplate ready for infinity at that time. He tested the line speed and then connected the new modem to my hub - and viola, 75.1/14.9 connection (wired test) against an estimated 59/19.
I expect this to fluctuate as the line settles and also it may go down quite a bit but I'm extremely happy with this result.
Anyone else in the PO15 postcode, cabinet 18 - I was no.2 Infinity connection so there's plenty of space left for now.
So for everyone who is having problems - good things can happen using the advice on this forum. A few months ago I was so hacked off with BT I was going to leave. Now turned round to an extremely happy customer after a few months of good ADSL, flawless BTV (now Youview too) and an upgrade to Infinity with a new contract. All it took was a bit of patience to get my line fixed and get rid of all the noise.
    Cheers,
    Alan.

  • MULTIPLE USERS 10G RAC ORACLE_HOME INSTALL WITH ASM/CRS

    Hi,
We need to install multiple 10g RAC databases on a two node Sun servers. Below is our configuration:
    1) Sun Solaris (ver 10) with Sun Cluster 3.2
    2) One ASM/CRS install (by 1 OS account)
    3) Four ORACLE_HOME 10g database install (by 4 different OS user accounts)
We would like to use one ASM instance for all four databases with appropriate privileges.
    OS User:           OS Group
    ========      =========
oraasm           dbaasm - (ASM and CRS install owner)
    ora1           dbaora1 - first db owner
    ora2           dbaora2 - second db owner
    ora3           dbaora3 - third db owner
    ora4           dbaora4 - fourth db owner
I understand that certain privileges need to be shared between ASM/CRS and DB owners. Please let me know the steps to be followed to complete this install.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi
    Please read that: Documentation http://download.oracle.com/docs/html/B10766_08/intro.htm
    - You can install and operate multiple Oracle homes and different versions of Oracle cluster database software on the same computer as described in the following points:
-You can install multiple Oracle Database 10g RAC homes on the same node. The multiple homes feature enables you to install one or more releases on the same machine in multiple Oracle home directories. However, each node can have only one CRS home.
-In addition, you cannot install Oracle Database 10g RAC into an existing single-instance Oracle home. If you have an Oracle home for Oracle Database 10g, then use a different Oracle home, and one that is available across the entire cluster for your new installation. Similarly, if you have an Oracle home for an earlier Oracle cluster database software release, then you must also use a different home for the new installation.
If the OUI detects an earlier version of a database, then the OUI asks you about your upgrade preferences. You have the option to upgrade one of the previous-version databases with DBUA or to create a new database using DBCA. The information collected during this dialog is passed to DBUA or DBCA after the software is installed.
    - You can use the OUI to complete some of the de-install and re-install steps for Oracle Database 10g Real Application Clusters if needed.
    Note:
Do not move Oracle binaries from one Oracle home to another because this causes dynamic link failures.
. If you are using ASM with Oracle database instances from multiple database homes on the same node, then Oracle recommends that you run the ASM instance from an Oracle home that is distinct from the database homes. In addition, the ASM home should be installed on every cluster node. This prevents the accidental removal of ASM instances that are in use by databases from other homes during the de-installation of a database's Oracle home.

    Oracle Version: 11G

Question (including full error messages and setup scripts where applicable):
I am attempting to install oracle 11g in a RAC configuration with Centos 5 (redhat 5) as the operating system. I get the following error
ERROR : Cannot Identify the operating system. Ensure that the correct software is being executed for this operating system
    Verification cannot complete
I get this error message when I run runcluvfy.sh, to verify the my configuration is clusterable. I don't know why.
I edited the /etc/redhat-release and entered echo "Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4 (Nahant Update 7)" to attempt to fool the installer into thinking its red hat 4.
But still shows the same message.
Anyone knows how to fix this ?
    Please help me.

    http://www.idevelopment.info/data/Oracle/DBA_tips/Linux/LINUX_20.shtml
runcluvfy.sh will not work on centos because the cluster verification utility checks the operating system version using the redhat-release packag and centos do this with his packages, so you must install and use redhat-release package
Get rpm-build to be able to build rpm’s:
    [root@centos5 ~]# yum install rpm-build
    Get source rpm of redhat-release
    [root@centos5 ~]# wget ftp://ftp.redhat.com/pub/redhat/linux/enterprise/5Server/en/os/SRPMS/redhat-release-5Server-5.1.0.2.src.rpm
    Build package:
    [root@centos5 ~]# rpmbuild –rebuild redhat-release-5Server-5.1.0.2.src.rpm
    Install newly generated rpm:
    [root@centos5 ~]# rpm -Uvh –force /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/i386/redhat-release-5Server-5.1.0.2.i386.rpm

  • BT Infinity, Netgear6300 and Sonos

I have just swapped a BT HH3 router for a Netgear R6300.  All PC's, tablet computers, phones connect fine to the new router with super fast connectivity on the 5G network. However when I hardwire in my Sonos system, everthing goes awry.
There is a Play 5 is connected to router, and NAS to the Play 5.  2 further Sonos amps connected wirelessly to the Play 5.   I can no longer access internet radio, plus the various PCs and Ipads around the house start to lose their wireless connections (which go to "Limited Connectivity".  If I unplug the Play 5 from the Netgear router the rest of the wireless network works fine, replug it in, network to the PC's.  Also, when the system is connected up to the Netgear router I can no longer see the NAS from any PC's - reappears if I go back to HH3.
I've cycled the power on all the Sonos units/PCs etc between each router changer over.
The Netgenie app indicates that all the PC's connect fine to the router, it's more that the onward connection to the Openreach modem falls over when the Sonos is connected ?
    Any ideas please ?

The 330/20 product was withdrawn by Openreach last month.
BT still advertise a 300/20 product (http://www.productsandservices.bt.com/products/broadband/packages?fttp=yes) so is either a mistake or capped upload.
My neighbour is on Infinity 4 and looking at his speed tests, it looks a capped upload to me.

  • BT infinity very poor service - what steps to canc...

Any one advise How I can cancel, without penalty, due to poor service?
I had BT Infinity installed end of January 2014 it was fine stable and running at around 65-68mbps until half way through May.
Then speed dropped to 19mbps but worse the connection would repeatedly drop staying up for no more than 5 minutes at a time and taking 10 or more attempts to reconnect. Checking the logs on Hub 5 often it would reconnect over 100 times a day.
I've had and engineer visit once a week now, because thats all India helpdesk can arrange, for over 2 months and each one treats the visit as if it's the first time. All they can do is check my equipment is OK which they all say is fine. If had the line moved to a different card in the street box. I've had 2 replacement Hub 5's.
Eventually in talking to one of the engineers, some are more clued up than others, I heard about RAIN engineers so I practically had to force India support to instigate this. They say they have put this in process but can't seem to report back to me anything from this. I finally got speed up to 30mbps but the connection is still unstable and as of my last call I have yet another engineer to wait in for on Monday (this will be about the 10th time I've wasted half a day!). I know full well and on site engineer can do absolutely nothing but reset the line speed which with the insatbility will drop again. So I've had enough I've been paying for the top package "unlimited data" at a significant price for a service I haven't had for over 2 months and I just want to cancel becuase of this and get a refund for poor service over that time. Every time I try to raise this with India I just get fobbed off as they really have no idea what they are doing and probably don't have the authority to handle this but BT provides no other obvious way to talk to some who can take this request to cancel seriously! Does anyone know who and where I can call, email or write to to get this usless service cancelled?

  • How to install 11gR2 RAC on 64 bit linux OS

I am completely new to this topic of RAC and need to be installing and standing up RAC on Linux 64 bit OS . I have good knowledge of installing oracle database ENTERPRISE version 11gR2.
Can you guide me as to how to start. I am looking for leads. Probably we will have 2 nodes.
Thank you very much for helping me in advance

If you are a My Oracle Support (Metalink) user, go check out these two notes created by the Oracle RAC Assurance Team. They are excellent.
NOTE: 810394.1 RAC Assurance Support Team: RAC Starter Kit and Best Practices (Generic)
NOTE: 811306.1 RAC Assurance Support Team: RAC Starter Kit (Linux)
In the Linux note mentioned above there is a link to a Linux Step by Step Instruction Guide. This step by step instruction guide is the best start to finish document I've seen for how to set-up and install Oracle RAC. I believe the guide is written for installing release 11.2.0.2.

In oracle rac, If user query a select query and in processing data is fetched but in the duration of fetching the particular node is evicted then how failover to another node internally?

The query is re-issued as a flashback query and the client process can continue to fetch from the cursor. This is described in the Net Services Administrators Guide, the section on Transparent Application Failover.
