Rack / Cabinet for Cisco 6513/6509 switches

Hi
I'm currently engaged in a IT definition project and I have to define 4 racks or cabinets (42U) for 2 core switches (6509E) and 2 datacenter switches (6513). Another network equipments will be deployed in these racks (firewalls, VPN concentrators, stackable switches, etc). The racks will be located on the enterprise datacenter and the chassis switches have all slots filled. The datacenter cooling is under the racks.
In this scenario, which kind of rack or cabinet is recommended? What is accepted? (open racks, closed cabinets, forced ventilation, etc). Who are the main manufacturers?
Thanks in advance
Wesley

Hi,
The most important thing in general the rack or cabinet width, i think you have to choose either 75 or 80 cm width, this is very important for the cable management for the patch cord cables from the network modules "RJ45".
Another important issue, is the cooling for the 6500 switches, since these Cisco switches have a special case, the fresh air enter the chassis from the right and the bad air exit the chassis from the left. So, take care for this case.
We are using APC brand for the racks and also we choosed special cooling device from APC for the 6500 cooling.

And also i think the great lakes cabinets are good.

  • High response time on one line card in Cisco 6513 Catalyst Switch

I am facing a wierd issue with one of the line card in the Cisco 6513 switch. All the servers, desktops and trunks connected to this line card are showing high response time (>500ms) locally. But those IP phones connected to the same line card is working fine and the repsonse time is always 1ms. I am unable to find any root cause as i am not seeing any errors or logs, please help me to fidn the root cause.
Anyway i ahve a plan to reboot the line card and test it, but i am just looking for a fix that would help us to avoid the reboot.

What supervisor are you running ?
Be aware that the 6548 module is quite heavily oversubscribed and you could be running into this ie. servers will definitely be sending a lot more data than an IP phone.
The 6548 has an 8Gbps connection the switch fabric (note this is assuming a sup 720). So you have 48 1Gbps ports going in (in = from end devices) and only 8Gbps going out (out = to the switch fabric). Each group of 6 ports shares a 1Gbps connection the switch fabric. So lets says on one of those groupings you had 6 servers with 1Gbps connections. If only three of these servers were sending out 400Mbps of data each you have contention because 3 x 400Mbps = 1.2Gbps and you only have 1Gbps to the switch fabric.
If this is the problem there are a couple of solutions -
    1) you can look into how the devices are spread across the port groupings and maybe you could move things around to make the traffic more even among port groupings. However you mention servers and trunks so you could just end up with the same problem but also the phones are not working either.
    2) you can look to migrate some connections off that module onto another but this supposes you have spare capacity elsewhere. If those trunk links are connected to other switches then you would defintely want to look into moving these as the 6548 was never intended to be used as an uplink module between switches.
    3) you could upgrade the module to something like a 6748 (or whatever the latest is as they keep introducing new ones) which has a much better connection to the switch fabric. Again this assumes a sup720 as the 6748 would't work with a sup32.
However don't just rush into 3) without first doing some investigation work eg. what do the servers do, how much traffic are they churning out etc.  Have you looked at the interface stats for each connection to see if you are getting drops etc ?

    Hi Friend,
The message indicates that your Catalyst 4500/4000 switch has learned a MAC address that already exists in the content-addressable memory (CAM) table, on a port other than the original one. This behavior repeatedly occurs over short periods of time, which means that there is address flapping between ports.
If the message appears for multiple MAC addresses, the behavior is not normal
If the error message appears for one or two MAC addresses, locate these MAC addresses in order to determine the cause. Issue the show cam mac_addr command in order to identify from where these MAC addresses have been learned. In this command, mac_addr is the MAC address that the error reports as flapping.
After you determine between which ports this MAC address is flapping, track down the MAC address. Connect to the intermediate devices between your Catalyst 4500/4000 and the device that has the problem MAC address. Do this until you are able to identify the source and how this device connects to the network.
Note: Because the MAC address is flapping between two ports, track down both of the paths.
These are other issues that can cause this message to appear
    1) Server NIC redundancy problem
    2) HSRP
    3) EtherChannel misconfiguration
    4) Host reflects packets back onto the network
Check this link for complete details of this problem and how to troubleshoot

  • How to set up VLANs for Cisco SG500 - 28 switch

    Hi,
First of all, this is my first post in here, I hope someone can help me, and please be patient since I am very little experienced.
OK, so let me explain you the scenarion that I am facing and hopefully someone will be able to help me.
We have a Cisco SG500 - 28 port gigabit switch in our workplace.
Our goal, is to create 3 VLANs and seperate the networks between different departements.
VLAN1 (which is the default VLAN in the switch) - will be used for IT department and the management.
VLAN100 - will be used for business .
VLAN200 - will be used for guests who need to connect to the internet through WiFi.
I have created VLAN100 and VLAN200, and VLAN1 is there by default.
I want to use port 13 for VLAN200 and to connect the Wifi access-point there.
The uplink is in port 25.
I would be glad if you could explain me the stuff first in a abstract more general level, and then we can look at the specific scenario that we have.
The Cisco SG500 - 28 gets internet from a Sophos UTM 9 router.
I will need to take care of inter-VLAN routing as well, and subnet, and DHCP
    Thanks in advance,
    Kindest regards,
    D

    Hello Desmond,
    You have two different options:
    Option 1:
Configure Sg500 switch as a Layer 2 switch and let the Sophos firewall do all the Layer 3 routing along with internet access. If you choose this option, then, you need to configure your uplink port as a trunk port and allow all 3 vlans to pass through. Also, you need to make sure that the Sophos device supports VLANs and trunking (or at least sub interfaces and create sub interfaces for each vlan). Also, all LAN devices will have the respective sub-interface/VLAN interface IP on the Sophos as their default gateway.
    Option 2:
Configure SG500 switch as a Layer 3 device and configure intervlan routing to manage internal network traffic locally and send just the internet traffic to Sophos device.
You need to create Layer 3 interfaces for VLAN1, VLAN100, and VLAN200 on SG500 and then make those Layer 3 interfaces default gateway for respective VLAN.
You can configure the uplink port as an access port in one of the VLANs.
Make sure that the Sophos device has an IP on the same subnet as the VLAN you chose for the uplink port.
You also need to enter static routes on the Sophos device for the remaining two subnets on the SG500 (next hop address pointing to the IP address of the VLAN that the uplink port belongs to).
Also, on the SG500, you need to configure a default route, next hop address pointing to the Sophos interface IP address.
    Hope this helps.

  • Scripting reboot for Cisco 300 Series switches

I would like to have some help putting together a script for rebooting our 300 series POE switches. I have about 150 at this stage to administer and it would make it much easier not to have to remotely reboot them. The IP settings will be the same for each location and we have about 2-5 in each location. I will be logging in through logmein to each remote server, and will run the scripts from this to the local switches. Any help would be appreciated.

I was playing with my Indigo on an SG-500 and it seems to work.  Create a session for each switch and in the session properties for each switch enter your crendentials (user/pass) IP/port, etc, I was using telnet, port 23 for this and then under the send command tab, on connection I entered:
    reload
    y
One command per line up to 20 commands I believe and it connected, I saw my prompts and replies and then shutting down.
So if you try this you can just go down the file tree list for switches with cameras than need a reboot and restart the entire switch if you like, quick and easy.
You could also add a folder for each switch and a session in that folder possibly for each camera/port with online port number changing for each camera in the session properties and then selectively cycle power for just the affected cameras.
    Example for port 22/camera xxxx:
    conf t
    int gi22
    power inline never
    power inline auto
It would take a fair amount of time to set up but once done you could just pick a switch folder and the port in that switch to cycle.  If you have multiple port on a switch you could use
    conf t
    int range gi22-24
    or
    int range gi1,6,16,20
    power inline never
    power inline auto
might have to verify that syntax

  • Does cisco MDS 9000 switch by default set a little higher R_T_TOV?

    Hi, All:
Not sure anyone has done LOS for cisco MDS 9000 switch before. I tried to insert code violation which is equal to 103ms but only see link reset but not NOS/OLS. is it because that Cisco MDS has default higher ? Or can we set R_T_TOV on switch?

Hi Larry - [this|http://lists.apple.com/archives/usb/2008/Oct/msg00021.html] was the only thing I could find about transactions timing out, but since you don't have anything plugged in, it really doesn't apply. Have you tried resetting your SMU?
If that doesn't work, run Disk Utility from your install disc and see what it comes up with. Your suspicion that the MB may be faulty is probably correct, and if you are still within the 90 day warrant period, you should call the repair place and have them replace it yet again.

  • ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock network port has problems with our Cisco 6509 switch

We purchased a ThinkPad USB 3.0 dock for and X1 carbon and the main issue we are having is the network port does not seem to work with our Cisco 6509 switch. I tried updating the firmware on the dock but it still hasn't fixed the issue. I was wondering if anyone else had run into this problem with any other networks out there.

I'm seeing the same issue with a ThinkPad W520.  When I connect my ethernet cable directly to the laptop, my internet speeds are on par with my service provider of 18 Mbps.  When I move that cable to the dock, I will only see 1.5 Mbps.  I have two displays attached to the dock and I'm running Windows 7.  I've updated the dock firmware and have installed the latest system drivers.  Is there anything else to try?

  • Has anyone develped an EM plug-in for Cisco switches or routers

    Folks,
Has anyone develped an EM plug-in for Cisco switches or routers? Please reply to this thread if you have developed one and would like to share your experience in developing this plug-in?
    Thanks,

It's probably not the conversion from CMYK to RGB that's causing the problem, but color profile (ICC) embedding in Photoshop. Fireworks doesn't read color profiles. You might be able to create an action to remove the color profile in Photoshop and then batch process the images with it.

  • Using Cisco MDS 9148 switch for switching and routing

    Hi Gurus,
Can you please advice me! Can i configure interface trunking, routing and dhcp services on the Cisco MDS 9148 switch?
    Thanks for your response!!

    Tommy,
MDS9148 is a Storage SAN Fibre Channel switch, it doesn't support Ethernet, IP, VLANs, VLAN trunking, 802.1Q, IP routing, DHCP. It's meant for Fibre Channel connectivity between Fibre Channel server HBAs and Fibre Channel storage.

  • Is it possiable to run image for cisco 3550 PWR-SMI on c3500 XL series switch?

    Hi,
as you know cisco 3500 XL switches are L2 switches and there is no ios image which supports L3 functionality compiled for that devices, but what will happen if I'll try to run C3550-IPBASEK9-M image on 3500 XL series switch?
    Will it boot up?
Will the SVI functionality be available?
    Thank you,
    Edik.

The 3550 is a different hardware family so I think you'll find that the 3500XL will likely not boot up with a 3550 image.
