RADEON 4870 - Intermittent Video problem (screenshot)

Hi all,
This problem has been happening more and more often recently. It used to happen once a month, not it has happened three days in the row.
It usually happens when either working in Ms Office apps or just using FF / IE. I do not remember this ever happening while playing games (so im thinking it is not overheating).
It can happen 5 minutes after i turn the rig on, or a couple of hours.
I have the latest driver from ATI. I also DLed MSI's Live Update 4 to try to update the cards BIOS, but the only thing that the app detects is an update to the Audio drivers (RealTek)

Thanks in advance for any help,

does anyone know how i can start a trouble ticket with MSI? I used the Customer Service links on their website but half of the links  are dead the other half do not seems to be very helpful either.

  • Intermittent video problem on Adobe Connect Pro

    Hi,
I have this intermittent video problem on the Adobe Connect pro server. The video connent sometime display blank even though it showed playing in the status bar and I can hear the audio part of it. Do someone have similar problem as mine?
    Thanks

I've had to "cache" uploaded videos by playing them shortly before the audience will see them. For me, the cache holding time when using Adobe's servers is about 5 minutes.

  • New Mac Mini intermittent video problems

I just set up a Mac Mini 2009 version and I'm using 2 LCD monitors. One is a Planar PX2611W and the other is A Samsung Syncmaster 191t. Most of the time they work fine but I'm getting intermittent problems:
    1. The main monitor (plugged into the mini DVI port) occasionally just displays multicolor static noise.
It resolves itself after a couple of minutes.
    2. The secondary monitor (mini display port) was working but then just stopped displaying. I checked the connections and they were good. I was finally able to get it working again by unplugging and replugging in the connection to the mini display port.
Could this be a faulty video card or a faulty display port?

Here is a "must-see" thread from MacBook section:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8955103&#8955103
I spent more than hour to read and here is the only take-away:
    SwitchResX - http://www.madrau.com/html/SRX/DL.shtml
I tried to add a custom resolution - VESA 1680 x 1050 H: 66.874KHz V: 59.884Hz 119MHz pixel clock, according to the 225MS specification from Samsung. You may check this from the bundled CD from your 226BW. Though, this Samsung suggested resolution made the problem even worse! The screen flash with "multicolor static noise" more frequent!
So I tried to change the V frequency to exactly 59Hz (in CVT-RB simplified mode). The problem...well...I can't say it has gone as I can't spend an hour to look at the screen to check, but I would say, better! It's worth to give it a try!

  • Mac Pro 2008 with Radeon 4870 video useable resolution on DVI limited to size of minidisplay port VGA when displays are mirrored. Did not have this problem until I plugged in new monitor (miniDisplayport), but now it affects even going back original mon

Have been using the Mac Pro since 2008.  Changed to a Radeon 4870 card early this year.   Everything was fine.
Running an old KDS monitor from minidisplay port to VGA and a 1400x1050 projector from DVI out.  Have used the
two mirrored the entire time with no trouble.
The old kDS monitor looked like it was starting to go bad so I got another monitor.  Don't have much room
so it's a 14inchwith widescreen 1328x768 display.  Hooked that to minidisplay port as it only has a VGA input.
Immediately the LCD display took over and restricted the output to the projector.
If I turn off mirroring, I can get projector back to normal.  But this makes running programs a lot more difficult.
It worked fine with mirroring on before the monitor change.  Except going back to old monitor,
now it is affecting things. I pull up display preferences.  If the displays are mirrored, even setting the projector
to 1400x1050, it says "usuable resolution 1280x1024."  It didn't use to do this at all.
Tried reseting NVRAM - no result.
Any suggestions would be helpful.  Just looking at the image on the projector, I don't see any difference from
    before.

    UPDATE:
As noted in the first post, both of these newer USB DAC work fine at 24/96 on my wife's iMac, so it's clear that they didn't both become defective when I connected them to the Macbook Pro at the same time.
Resetting the Macbook Pro PRAM didn't help, so I removed the hard shell laptop case to get to the battery and remove it, then reset the SMC. After that I could use the original DAC at 24/96 again, but only IF it was plugged into the rear USB port. If I plugged it into the front USB port then the sound was garbled and filled with noise. This was a vast improvement over no sound at all.
Then I switched to the replacement/updated DAC, but I got no sound at all from either USB port at any bit-rate. And returning to the original DAC again now results in no sound again.
Sigh... I will reset the PRAM and SMC again, and see how far I can get with this. I'd still love some help. Thanks!

  • ATI Radeon 4870 Graphic Card - Minor Problems with Icon View

I have a MacPro 2,1 (early 2007)... Recently upgrade graphic card from ATI Radeon X1900 to ATI Radeon 4870... Works fine, except when viewing files in "icon view"... The icons are "fuzzy-like" some pixels are missing... This is seen in any size icon... small or large... or views no problem... cover view, list view, or column view...Does anyone have a working solution for this problem in icon view... Thanks

If ATi didn't specify the card you bought is designed for your Mac, then it's strictly the PC version and is incompatible with OS X. It may work correctly in Bootcamp for Windows, but not for OS X.
Your best option would be to return the 4350 and purchase a "designed for Mac" video card by ATi or nVidia cards offered on the Apple online store.

I just noticed that the video card crashes after i come back from sleep mode.
    Here's the kernel log: http://pastebin.ca/2050145
    and the Xorg.log: http://pastebin.ca/2050146
For this crash, unlike the one that happens when I view a flash video full screen, the problem can be fixed if i log off and log back on.

  • Mac Pro 1.1/ATI Radeon 4870 HD won't detect monitor on boot/sleep

    Hey there all,
    First post.
Been following for a while now.
I'm running into a problem with my MacPro..
When I boot the tower up, the chime rings [through the built-in speaker--not my connected and powered externals]
The video signal will sometimes show up just for a couple of seconds while the Gray-Gear Screen loads and then will instantly loose signal and continue to not detect the display until I suffocate the tower, pull out the DVI adapter and reboot without the display connected until I can hear the volume adjust through my external speakers. . I can then proceed to plug in the adapter and the computer works as it should-- that is, until I put it to sleep and then I must start the whole process over.
I am getting sick of having to do my usual ritual in order to use this machine.
Could it a driver/capatabliliy thing? Or perhaps an installed-OS malfunction?
Is there a way to tell if the card has been flashed to work on the Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for looking into this.
    Cheers.
    -B

Okay.. so I did the smc reset. No luck.
I've contacted the seller that I purchased the computer from and he told me that the tower had previous trouble with the card that it came with.. he didn't specify which card, but he's made arrangements for a 3rd party seller to send me an ATI Radeon X1900 with 512mb RAM [same capacity I had before in the Radeon 4870 HD]
Is there a significant difference between these two cards?
Should I have the 3rd party send me the same 4870 HD model? and if so, would the problem persist?
Thanks again, and any help is much appreciated.
    Cheers.

  • Radeon 4870 better match for Aperture 3 than GF 9600GT?

    Hello,
I got an GeForce 9600 GT in my mac pro. After installing Aperture 3 I got unpleasant surprise how slow the brushing is. Everything else works fine but brushing is really a pain, it freezes for moments as I start to brush plus gui effects are slow and on the way constantly. My brother is tossing out his Radeon 4870 for better gaming card from his pc. I was wondering if I would get better performance in aperture 3 with that radeon? Can you guys please confirm that you got no problems with aperture 3 and radeon 4870 with brushing and general? I am a semipro photographer and current slow performance of aperture is driving me insane.

The brushing itself is fast, but can pause afterwards while the CPU figures out the solution to the brush stroke. Some brushes are always very quick while other are more CPU taxing.
Then I noticed something I do out of habit. Having the awesome Logitech MX Revolution mouse, and having Exposé functions mapped to the thumb wheel, when Aperture pizza-wheels, I habitually hit my mouse button for Exposé's Dashboard, and Aperture resumes near immediately. A hack, but it often works. This is not limited to Aperture, but something I do anytime OS X pizza-wheels, and works the vast majority of the time.
Also looked at the atMonitor while just doing a quick test. My VRAM never went more than 40% used in Aperture, and was normally around 25% VRAM used. X1900XT video card has 512MB VRAM and driving 1920x1200 pixels (23" Cinema display).
    HTH.

  • Intermittent Graphics Problem

I have an iMac from May 2011.
In the last week it has exhibited a very intermittent graphics problem.
I see that this model had a known graphics card issue and there is an extended 4 year warranty on it.
But it is so intermittent that I wonder if it is something else.
    Running 10.9.4.
This started after I installed a free virus program (Webroot) from my online bank.
Probably a red herring but it made me think it was that.
I reformatted the drive and installed fresh not importing anything.
All was well for a few days.
Then it started again, the display goes blue or pink or sometimes black.  Usually less than once a day but sometimes more.
It has never done it in bootcamp.
Today I booted from the install DVD and ran the extensive hardware test.  Over an hour long and the iMac was very hot afterwards as expected.
    It reported NO PROBLEMS.
I have an appointment Friday but it is 50 minutes one way and I am hesitant to go when I can't replicate it.
Anyone think of anything it could be?

Didn't you see that I reformatted the hard drive and installed fresh, that would solve any problems by antivirus right?

  • How Do I use an Ati Radeon 4870 HD for 3 Monitors

I am new to the Apple world and community.  I recently got a new job that requires me to use a Mac Pro.  OS X version 10.6.8.  2.66 ghz dual xeon and 32 GB of ram.  It has a ATI Radeon 4870 HD.  I can run 2 monitors fine using the DVI and Mini DV port ( Using a convertor from apple. ).  When I try to use the 2 other HDMI ports for my third monitor, Mac OS wont detect it.  The wierd thing is some of the images from certain apps show on the 3rd Monitor.
Under graphics information it shows the Radeon 4870.  Under PCIe information it shows the same card.  On the back of my machine I have 2 HDMI slots and another lower down with Mini DV and DVI.
The Displays I am running are 3 HP LP2475w Monitors.  Running in DVI mode with one converted to Mini DV.  The 3rd non working is running in DVI to HDMI but it can be run Straight HDMI if need.  Ive tried alot of configuration settings and I can't get the HDMI port to be detected by MAC OS.  Ive plugged one in at a time and just the HDMI do not detect.
Please let me know what information is needed to help troubleshoot this better.

A 5770 is $249 or slightly less and in the same dept to me as replacing hard drives, adding some RAM in order to work and because my understanding is it was the first card to support 3 monitors.
The 5770 only requires 10.6.5+ - and the 4,1 had way too many issues with 10.5.7/10.5.8
The 4870 may or may not provide what you need for the software you run, even though 3 yr old machine but 4 yr old plus video card.

  • Power Mac G4 having video problems -green dots and pixelated lines

Yesterday my Power Mac G4 running OS X (10.5.1) started having unusual video problems. I started to notice green dots on the screen where the mouse pointer had been or where application windows had recently been. The severity of the video symptoms seem to vary - from a cluster of green pixels to slight amount of fuzz in text.
I'm thinking that this is a symptom of a problem with the video card starting to fail but I haven't ruled out the Apple Studio Display either. While the Mac was still under Apple Care support, I did have the video card replaced a few years ago due to symptoms that were much more severe than this.
Should I get a new video card? Could it be the display at fault? How expensive would it be to take it in to the local Apple store for diagnosis/repair?

  • Diagnosing video problem

    Hi all,
I've got a PowerMac G5 2.0 GHz from May, 2004. It has the original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro graphics card. I recently had to replace the logic board (with a working used one). That worked fine for months, but now I'm getting video problems. I'll get flashing vertical stripes of short horizontal bars. Sometimes it seems that if I jiggle the display connector at the computer, the screen settles down for a while, but it is not completely certain that this is cause and effect. I hooked up a TV to the DVI port (using Apple's DVI-Video adaptor) and got the same issues, so it's not the display or the cable. I'm hoping that it's a graphics card problem, and not the "new" logic board. Is there a troubleshooting procedure, short of buying and trying a new graphics card, that would let me narrow down the problem?
    Thanks for any help.

What you describe sounds like a failing graphics card.  My particular troubleshooting process is to swap in another one to see if it works.  It's handy to have a few extra parts.  Short of that, you might try downloading ATIccelerator and using it to downclock the card.  Downclock both the GPU and memory by 5 to 10%.  If it helps, that would give a more clear indication.

Also, if downclocking helps, it might still be possible to salvage the card.  As with virtually everything else, Japamac has a nice tutorial on the subject of card maintenance:
    First read his overview:

Then read the teardown instructions for your specific card:

Applying fresh thermal compound is not an optional step.  Maybe wait to see what others have to say about this suggestion before purchasing the compound.  The fact that it isn't doing it all of the time leads me to believe that it might not be too late, but I don't know how common it is to bring them back once they start showing problems.
Before anything, I might try reseating the card and not just wiggling it from the outside.  Take it out, blow out the dust with some compressed air, and verify that the fan moves freely.  Clean the contacts on the card with a pencil eraser.  Also verify that the fan is actually working when you put it back in.
There might be something else obvious to try that totally eludes me at the moment.  Hopefully, you'll get some better feedback than this.  Good luck.

  • Intermittent video mask

I have inserted a video mask into QT Pro 7.2. The background movie is on loop. when in full screen, the mask works first time (all black) and then goes grey and then goes back to black. This alternates irregularly as the movie re-loops. Any ideas?

First of all, thanks for your attention, nbar
    I have two ongoing problems:
1st - intermittent video loss - I have to press any button on the remote every minute or so (sound will go through, steadily), just to get the "image" back...
2nd - This content requires HDCP for playback
Hard reset is unplugging for several minutes? Just did and also followed the article on the Sleep procedure and nothing happened....

  • ATI Radeon 4870 on K9AGM2-L ?

Hello, I am planning to buy a new ATI radeon 4870 video card. But I need at least 2 SATA because I am using 2 SATA HDDs. It is a double slot video card solution and I see it is long...Does anyone have such card installed on this mobo MSI K9AGM2-L? Does it cove all the SATA connectors? Thanks.

Thanks I have found some dimensions of the ATI card: http://forums.gameon.co.uk/showthread.php?p=381274
And as I measured it will definitely be all over 4 SATA connectors. So everybody that wants a double slot video card and in length over 21cm will need those right angel SATA cables. When I will get them and also the ATI 4870 I will post a picture here. I hope it will fit even with those cables...
I measured it in my case and probably it would fit - the ATI radeon 4870 + Those 90°SATA cables
Ok So I finally bought everything what I needed,  but I have now Gainward ATI radeon 4850 GS instead of mentioned 4870. 4850 (9,25") is slightly smaller than 4870 (9,5"). With difficulties I have installed my card into the microATX mobo, when you have double slot videocard you CANNOT use any SATA connector on the MOBO! As you can see on the pictures below it just fits with the 90°SATA cables, BUT the plastic cover on the cooler is thinner than the card and when I pull out the card some condensers are bent on that side where are the SATAs...
It is definitely a good idea to buy a standart ATX motherboard in this case...
