Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb troubles :\

Hey,
I'm not used to post things on a forum but now I'm getting quite desperate. I've been searching and surfing the net for possible solutions but none worked until now.
Sometimes my v-card's drivers hang, or that's what I think. The image freezes, but the mouse can keep on moving (nothing will react anymore and even when I'm typing this, it happened already 1 times). After that "freeze" of about 2-3 seconds, the screen will "click" like you hear when you change resolution in the display properties. After that, the screen comes back and most of the time, everything is ok, except from the fact that sometimes a window like this (mozilla) is resized to 800*600 or 640*480 size .. (not sure)
But sometimes, the screen goes black after clicking and will never come back, only a reset can help this situation.
And sometimes (rare) the screen begins to show artifacts on the screen (not in games, just windows) and this gets worse and worse until you can't see  and have to reset.
When anything of this happens during a game, a recover doesn't seem to be possible at all.
 -> this suggests it's a driver problem...
Now I've read about fastwrites (not available in current bios - but i heard it's available in the new bios which i didn't upgrade yet because i'm a bit afraid of the procedure as I don't have a FAT system nor a win98/ME boot disk and I'm using winXP pro) which I disabled in the catalyst drivers
I've tried to lower the AGP acceleration
I've tried Omega drivers
I've turned on and off the VPU recover
I've checked my PSU - even disconnected everything but v-card, hdd and nic and my PSU (Antec case) can give 16A/28A/35A in 12v/5v/3.33v rails...
A clean install of windows won't help
Direct X version doesn't matter
And all starts after the first catalyst driver installation after the fresh windows install.
Please help,
If you think there's some info missing, don't hesitate to ask, I'm an experience PC user so you can ask me pretty much everything about anything (I think) and I'll followup this post frequently. Anything that can help me find the cause will be appreciated. Until now I didn't want to return the card under warranty because I know I'll have to miss it quite some time then. :(
PC spec:
MSI 6547 (Sis645) Mobo
P4 1.6A (OC'ed or not, doesn't change anything)
Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
Windows XP Pro - SP1

i read that the bios update adds the "enable fast write" function, but at what value is it whitout the update ?
if it's enabled by default, then it could be the problem
but i'll look into the site you gave and try to flash the bios tomorrow
i'll post the results and try the card in another pc if it didn't work :\

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

I have been looking for someone with the same or similar problem as mine to no avail
Ok so heres my problem...a few months ago i noticed that the screen saver had frozen on my G4 mac
At the time i didn't think anything of it so i try to reboot but it wouldn't get any further than the "Blue" screen after weeks of trouble shooting, reading through logs and surfing what felt like 90% of the net i tracked it down to the "ATI Radeon9700 Extensions" in my system folder.
As you can see from above i have a "ATI Radeon 9800 PRO" and i presume that it runs off the 9700 drivers because there are no 9800 extenstions in the driver updates from ATI....
Anyway this is the strange bit ....if i boot up in "Safe Mode" and delete all the "ATI Radeon9700 Extenstions" below
    ATIRadeon9700.kext
    ATIRadeon9700DVDDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeon9700GA.plugin
    ATIRadeon9700GLDriver.bundle
    ATIRadeon9700VADriver.bundle
    Then trash...
    Extensions.kextcache
    Extensions.mkext
Then put a new copy of the "Radeon9700 Extensions" from the 10.4.8 upgrade back in, it boots fine.
These extensions come with the apple OS updates so everytime i upgrade the OS i have to go through the above steps again.
I am starting to think that the openGL capabilities of my card is fooked because the screensaver that im talking about is "Flurry" and it is really jerky now if i try to run it
I know that the SS users openGL
Also if i try and launch UT2k4 i get a crash log error of "unable to create pixel format.
This is what the boot up log looks like before i trash the extensions

Now, my card is actually a 9800 Pro. I think it's something to do with OpenGL. I'm gonna try to launch other apps that access OpenGL directly and see what I get.

  • Quicksilver 733 and Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB

My dad just purchased a new iMac for himself and he's given his older Quicksilver 733 to my nephews. I'm trying to setup this Mac so the kids can use it to play games like Battlefield 1942, Command & Conquer, Star Wars Galatic Battleground, etc.
The Quicksilver has 1.12 GBs of RAM and a new 350 GB Seagate SATA hard drive with controller. I just installed a flashed Radeon 9800 Pro w/ 128MB of VRAM, but for some reason the computer still seems sluggish.
I'm currently running Mac OS X 10.3.9. I also noticed that in the ATI Utility shows the Radeon 9800 Pro's profile, but it doesn't indicate any refresh rates, which is odd. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

I also noticed that in the ATI Utility shows the Radeon 9800 Pro's profile, but it doesn't indicate any refresh rates, which is odd.
You will only have refresh rate options with VGA monitors.
DVI monitors all default to approx. 60Hz.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro (128MB) on G4 with lots of artifacts

    Hi there,
I recently bought a radeon 9800 pro (mac version) over ebay. I put it into a d1ghz (quicksilver with 1.5GB of Ram. Everything seems to work fine, however, the screen flickers ever so slightly after the ripple effect in the dashboard. Yet this is not really what bugs me: Any game (and probably other applications as well) which uses Core Image produces huge artifacts. There are just random screen-filling bits sticking out the ground...
How do I get rid of this? I already checked all the connections, ran software update, downloaded the most recent drivers and tried downclocking the graphics card.... (I also think that I cleared NV- and PRAM, but I am not sure... )
    What am I forgetting?
    Thanks already, dl33

Hi. I had the same problem, but it was a 500 mhz Sawtooth. I was told it was either a power issue or a heat issue. So I upgraded the power supply from 237 watts to 400 watts. It seemed to help, but it started doing the same thing. After wasting a lot of time and money with power supplies and soldering and adding fans, etc, I looked at the fan on the card. Like you, I bought mine used. The guy said it worked flawlessly. When I first got it and experienced the problems, I checked the fan. It wasn't the stock fan, was a unit from Arctic Cooling. The fan was spinning, but it said that air should be blown out the exhaust, and I felt none. Upon closer inspection it turned out that the fan was defective. It was constantly speeding up/slowing down, and it was supposed to be a single speed fan...not good. But by the time I figured that out, the card had been fried. I got a new unit from Arctic Cooling, but the card no longer works.
Might want to check the fan and make sure it's spinning. Your power supply should be sufficient since I believe the QS's had 344 watt PSU's.
One thing I forgot to mention was that underclocking it usually helped. I had to underclock it a good amount, though. I believe it was around 20%.
    Hope this helps.

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb or 256mb for PowerMac G4 MDD

I hane just a bought a PowerMac G4 MDD dual core 1.25 GHZ. I t has the old ATI Radeon 9000 pro. I am definately going to buy a 9800 Pro. But, I would like to know wether or not to spend the extra $70 on the 256mb card, rather than pay only $90 for the 128MB edition. I am not going to be doing anything CRAZY like photoshoping, or final cut pro or anything like that, bu I am going to be playing the casual 2002-2004 game here and there (Half-Life 2). And, I would also be running emulators. So, I have compared the two cards and have not noticed anything different as far as specs go. Except for 128MB more ram. I am on a budget, but would like the extra performance.
    Thanks for repsonding,
    Tanner (armadaskier4123)

There is virtually NO performance difference between the 256 MB version and the 128 MB version of the 9800 Pro.
Even with a digital monitor of 23" at full, native resolution of 1920x1200, the 256 MB version shows NO benefit.
In actual tests, the 256 MB version shows slightly slower, but mostly equal.
IMHO, it is NOT worth an extra $70.
See my Graphics Benchmarks pages and decide for yourself:
    http://www.jcsenterprises.com/Japamacs_Page/All_Things_PPC.html
If a G4 is a Digital Audio, Quicksilver or MDD, the 7800 GS is worth the money for use in Tiger.
For Leopard, a Geforce 6800 GT may be better due to better driver support and OpenGL performance.
The 6800 GT, sadly, cannot be used in a MDD.
Still, the 7800 GS does perform very well in Leopard, and is the best choice for a MDD.
If a G4 is a Sawtooth or Gigabit Ethernet machine, the 7800 GS (or the 6800 GT) cannot be used.

  • Will the following ATI Radeon 9800 Pro work on a G4 MDD?

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, 128MB DDR, and I'm wondering if anyone can verify if it will work on a G4 MDD. It was bought for a G5, but that G5 doesn't exist.
Embossed on the front of the card it says:
    PN: 109-a14400-01
On the back there are 3 stickers:
    1) J53480YRQ74B 603-4070
    2) SN + PN: 102A1440103 000009
    3) J53480YRQDMA 630-4908
On the metal back-plane it has etched: 805-5422-A
The card has 1 ADC connector with 25V/4A Max written beside it, and one DVI.
Google brings up some hits, but nothing definitive concerning G4 vs G5.
    Thanks in advance!

If it looks exactly like this one, including the "teeth" along the bottom, it won't work in any G4.
This card has an "AGP Pro" connector, which gets all of its power through the slot (it has no molex connector).
Even if the card was cut to physically fit in a G4, the AGP slot in a G4 (any model) can not provide enough power for a 9800. It would fry the G4, the card, or both.

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro and kt4 ultra

    Hello
i was curious to know of any problems with the Kt4 ultra motherboard and the Radeon 9800 pro??
my system constantly crashes back to the desktop, or completely locks when i play Command & Conquer Renegade.
there are also some "misdrawn?" walls in the game also,...
i have all the latest drivers for the motherboard and the card,(including the released today catalyst drivers from ati.com)
i have also tried the drivers from driverheaven.net, but same thing happens,...
    this is truly aggreviating...
    some system specs:
    kt4 ultra
    antec 380 true ps
    2500+ barton running at 11.5*173 @ 30c idle, 33c full load
    corsair 2*256 3200LL
built by ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb
ive read where you can increase the agp voltage to try and fix the problem...and i also saw where one guy was just going to buy another motherboard b/c of the issues...
    any help is truly appreciated
    thx

FWIW, in case anybody is reading this thread in future and has problems with this Board and this card, I can report that I have now(at my second attempt) successfully installed a Radeon 9800 Pro on MY kt4 uLTRA motherboard.
As noted above, I purchased a new Antec True Power unit, prior to installing for a 2nd time.   I am not sure whether that was necessary, but it certainly didn't hurt.  The successful installation process was as follows:
    1) Download the latest catalyst drivers from ATI
    2) Set monitor to lowest possible standard  (640 x 480, 16 colours if possible - in my case my digital monitor could not be set lower than 800 x 600)
    3) Uninstall drivers for existing video card
    4) Replace video card
    5) Install ATI drivers
    6) restore settings on monitor to maximum.
At that point, after restarting the computer, I had a CLI.exe error.   After Googling for this problem, I discovered that I needed to download Net 1.1 from Microsoft.  After downloading and installing that additional program, Radeon 9800 Pro is now working perfectly.

  • ATI Radeon 9800 Pro - anyone using one?

Is anyone out there using a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb graphics card in their 1st generation G5 1.8mhz Dual-Processor tower? If so, is it running OK or have you had problems with it crashing?
Perhaps there's some tweaks I need to make in the ATI control panel? Mine seems to spontaneously hang doing all but the simplest of tasks. I've run Apple Hardware Test, but that says card is OK.
Waiting for an XT800 to arrive, but tempted to buy an Nvidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL - now. Can anyone help me decide please.
    Any advice appreciated,

while not the 9800, i used to have the 9650 (128mb vram) in my dualie ... quickly got rid of it and got an x800xt soon after aperture 1.0 ...
the difference was startling ... night and day ... with the 9650 every adjustment took forever ... it was workable but i always had a second task going on to keep me occupied ...
according to some profiles, yes there are people that still use the 9800 ... yours may have gone bad sooner than others ... regardless, your life will be better (imho) with a newer/better/faster/ stronger video card - whether you go ati or nvidia ... although i know little about the 6800 ...
do a full forum search of the 9800 6800 and x800xt ... see what is in the archives ...
    here's a start ...

  • Neo2 865 PE & Radeon 9800 Pro

I am having problems with my current system. I just purchased new mem, mb/proc, vid and for some reason the machine doesn't post.
ATI wants to push this off to MSI since the card posts in another machine and they have gone down a few different troubleshooting methods.
HOWEVER when I put my Nvidia 4600ti back in the machine it works fine.
Here is a laundry list of things I have tried and my machine specs.
    1. Unplugged all other devices from the power supply except the graphics card and floppy drive. Still no post.
    2. The 9800 Pro did post in another machine at BestBuy.
    3. Cleared the CMOS settings.
    4. Swapped out the power supply with a new 430w Antec
    5. Reseated video card a number of times.
    6. Checked power connector to Video Card.
    Motherboard MSI 865PE Neo2
    Processor Retail Intel P4 2.4c
    Mem Corsair 2x512 3500C2PT
Video Retail ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb
    Power Antec Truepower 430w
    HD Western Digital SE 180Gig

Well I did not have the exact same problem as you but perhaps I can help with my experience.
I have the 875p neo and I had a Geforce 4 ti4200 installed everything was working fine with performance set to fast in the bios. I bought an ATI Radeon 9500 Pro. Once installed the system would lock up within one minute of booting to windows XP. The solution for me was to set performance mode in the bios to Slow this is the only way I could get stability out of the system with the 9500 Pro.
    Try the following.
Using the geforce card enter the bios. If there are any performance mode settings (that military rank thingy) at all set them to the slowest settings before switching cards to the Radeon. Try the Radeon again. If you can get it to post then you can try tweaking to higher performance settings till you hit the sweet spot for your configuration.
You might also try setting ram voltage to 1.65 and AGP voltage to 1.55 Slowly increment up on the voltages if no joy.
Post again if still no joy.
    Polecat out

  • What is the correct installation sequence for my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB into my Quicksilver 867 G4?

    Hi.
I just got my used ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB card.
What is the correct installation sequence into my Quicksilver 867 G4 running 10.4.11 on one drive 10.5 on another?
The original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - 32MB SDRAM went bust.
Is the driver build in 10.4?
Do I remove the old driver?
If I need to install the driver that came with it, (10.3.6) should the card be installed first?
    What about firmware updates?
Thank you for all your time and patience.

I think it's the card, but here are some files that may affect it...

  • Having trouble with my G4 MDD 867MHz DP and ATi Radeon 9800 Pro video card.

I just recently purchased the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro Mac edition card on ebay. I installed the card on my G4 and turned it on thinking everything would work with no problems, but when I turned it on the grey apple screen came up fine and then it changed to a sky-blue screen with nothing on it and remained on that screen. My desktop or any of my apps did not load up at all. I reset the PRAM and the NVRAM as the seller I bought the card from instructed me to and still I get the same result. Is anyone familiar with this problem? I was wondering if my monitor was the problem because I'm using a Dell LCD monitor as the display for right now? I need help! I'm trying to get this up and running so I can start editing. Whatever information anyone can give me will be greatly appreciated!

Sometimes display cards that support multiple displays (or a second display card in the same Mac) can cause the display you are using to be the SECOND display in a multiple-display "extended desktop".
When this happens, the MenuBar and cursor may be drawn perfectly, but be on the "other" screen, and it is very difficult to determine what has happened. \[This problem is sometimes caused by inadvertently leaving an adapter or cable on an unused display port.]
Try moving the mouse many times to the right to see if the cursor suddenly transitions onto your screen, then try the same experiment to the left.

  • Radeon 9800 pro 256mb hanging on blue screen

I'm deep in the waters of frustration right now, and am hoping someone here might have the answer.
About 3 months ago I was looking for a video card for me to run motion. I saw the 9800 mac special edition with 128mb video ram had rave reviews. At that time ATI was not making them. So I turned to eBay...
I purchased a card that was advertised as a Mac 9800 pro special editing 128mb. I later found out it was a flashed pc card. The ebay seller told me the card worked fine on all his mac's that he tested it on.
The problem I was having was the machine boots up, I see the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. I see the blue screen where normally I see the login progress bar loading the OS. But with this card I only see the blue screen. I hear the hard drive churning, so I am assuming it is still loading the OS, but I cannot see anything. I can reboot in safe mode and the video card works fine.
Well... I assumed it was the fault of the card and that it was flashed. I returned the card to the ebay seller, who sent me another one, same results with that one. I returned the card to the seller and he refunded my money.
I put the money toward the just released Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256mb card. I just got it a couple days ago and am experiencing the same problems. I have tried everything... everything I know and still can't get the card to work? Here is a list of what I have done:
    With the flashed card:
    1. Shut off computer and unplugged it. Removed OEM video card and installed ATI 9800 card. Plugged the power supply cable for the card into the computer power supply cable and hard drive.
Problem Occurs: When starting up, the grey screen comes up with the Apple on it, then the screen turns blue, where I typically would see the progress bar of the system loaded up before the user login screen. I only see a blue screen at this point but can hear the hard drive working for about a min.
    2. Restarted the computer in safe mode.
    3. Logged in as Admin user and opened the ATI preference pane to verify it sees the card.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:
    A startup problem has occured.
Cannot connect to ATI TVOut Kernal Extension. Some features are not available.
Clicked OK and the ATI preference pane appears.
    4. Close the preference pane and reinstalled ATI Displays 4.5.6. Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs
    5. Restarted computer holding down AppleOption+PR to clear PRAM. Cleared the PRAM 4 times in a row, by allowing the chime to happen 4 times.
    Problem Occurs
    6. Shut computer down. Disconnected the DVI plug for the cinema display and connected a VGA CRT monitor. Started computer.
    Problem Occurs
    7. Shut computer down, disconnected the VGA CRT monitor. Reconnected DVI plug and restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs
    8. Started the computer in safe mode. Logged into admin account. Opened the ATI Preference pane.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:
    A startup problem has occured.
Cannot connect to ATI TVOut Kernal Extension. Some features are not available.
    Closed preference pane.
Went to ATI site and downloaded:
    aug2005-radeo-universal-rom-update.dmg
    Ran the updater.
    Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs.
    9. Restarted the computer in safe mode. Changed the login preference pannel to automatically log into the administrator account. Restarted computer, waited for the blue screen, then walked away for about 2 hours with the computer on blue screen, hoping the system was loading or doing something.
    Problem Occurs.
    10. Put in the TechTools Pro CD, hoping to run some tests on the video card from the cd. When booting from the CD OS...
    Problem Occurs.
    11. Enabled Root user. Logged in as root and installed ATI Displays 4.5.6 from there. Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs.
    12. Shut down computer and installed old video card.
    13. On an internal hard drive in the computer. Wiped the drive and formatted it. Installed 10.4.1 on the drive. booted up into the drive, installed ATI drivers, shut down computer, installed 9800 pro video card, booted up.
    Problem Occurs.
With the new 9800 for Mac ATI card with 256mb:
With original card, install drivers, repairpermissions, shut down, install new card
Set to restart in single user, give 5 min to see if ATI monitor startup item in user starteputems loads
Hooked VGA & DVIt in together, both showed blue screen
    Reset NVRAM via open firmware
    Reset cuda button
Take battery out, wait at least 10 min, re-install new battery, press cuda button
    Reinstall ATI update 4.5.6
    Reset nvram from open firmware
In ATI control panel, selected 'Force Single Display Operation'
    Change display scaling to 50%
Download latest Mac OS update from apple & reinstall
    Help?

I get dizzy just thinking about it.
I have tried installed a brand new OS, 3 different times on a different Hard Drive, still the card doesn't work.
I had one person suggest that it may be the card is not communicating with the OS Window Drawing module? (excuse my ignorance of what that is really called. I just know there is some program, possibly in the kernel, that is responsible for drawing out the OS windows.)
How can we rule out that it is a bad AGP slot?
•The slot works fine with my 9000.
•It works in safe mode with the 9800.
•I have installed a brand new OS, three different times, still doesn't work.
•I have used Apple Hardware test to test my hardware, the AGP slot didn't report any problems.
I am assuming that the AGP slot is working. Although I worry about it a bit, because by now I have swapped cards in it about 50 times in my troubleshooting.
Here is a link to a complete list of everything I have tried:

  • G4 450 AGP to Radeon 9800 Pro upgrade low down.

I have been looking to upgrade my G4 450 AGP graphics card. I'm running 2-22" ViewSonic 2235's at 1680x 1050 w/ Rage 128 AGP and PCI cards. I've learned that this G4 has 2x AGP slot and few cards fit, namely ATI's Radeon X800 XT or Radeon 9800 Pro, both Mac Editions. Price eliminates the X800. 9800 comes in 128MB or 256MB flavors. Questions: 1. Is there any real advantage to the 256MB version aside from dual DVI output vs 1 DVI 1VGA? 2. Having seen max resolution at 2050x...; Is this resolution per dual monitor channel or will I have to lower my 1680 to a 1024 per screen. Thanks folks.

    Hi-
but why do you need more on the G4, the machine can't handle any software that requires 256MB of video memory anyway.
The only one who would say that, is someone who has settled for less.
There is a BIG difference between the other cards, and a 9800, even on an "old" machine.
I see all kinds of improvements in applications, the OS, system performance, etc., as compared to my old 9000 (64mb). The difference is night and day!
