[Radeon] ATI Radeon X800XL - AGP

I have a Power Spec 8960
AMD 64 3400+
Windows XP Home
1 GB DDR333 SDRAM
250 GB Hard Drive
Via S3 K8M800 Unicrome Video Driver
I upgraded Video Card, Sound Card and Power Supply:
Video: ATI Radeon X800XL AGP
Sound: Sound Blaster XFi
Power: True Blue 2.0 (480 v.)
Since the video card upgrade I have had so many crashes, screen black outs and random restarts. All with new and interesting messages like:
Your computer has recovered from a serious error. or
VPU recovery. Restart for new video settings.
and sometimes my PC will just short out no beeps.
I have formated my hard drive and reinstalled all components, more than once. I have rolled back the drivers. I have tried the system without the new video card and everything seems fine.
I should say that the system can run fine for an hour and then bam! It seems like it happens when 3D graphics come into play.
Please any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Did you completely remove the old video card drivers?I would try this.download driver cleaner----http://www.drivercleaner.net/
Download the Omega Drivers-http://www.omegadrivers.net/--Radeon Omega Drivers 2.6.83 (Catalyst 5.11)
Go to add/remove programs.Remove the catalyst control center, dont restart.Remove the Video Card driver.Restart in safe mode. Then run the driver cleaner for ATI.Restart in normal mode.Install the omega drivers.Set everything up and then see what happens.I had poor performance with the ATI drivers.I used the omega drivers and it was like night and day especially using open-gl.

  • Will the ATI Radeon 700 AGP card run two Studio 21 Displays?

I just bought a G4 MDD 1.4 GHZ Mac that has what I assume was the stock video card, which appears to be for LCD displays, since the cables from my Apple 21" Studio displays (CRTs) don't match up to it (those are called VGA monitors, right?).
On my present Mac (G4 Quicksilver) I am running both of these 21" Studio Displays, one plugged into the stock AGP card and the other connected to a PCI video card. As I prepare to switch over to my "new" MDD Mac now, I need to figure out how best to run the two monitors with this G4. (I will leave the video cards in the old Quicksilver and give it to a relative who also wants to run two monitors with it).
I notice a new Radeon 7000 AGP card being offered on Ebay which has one VGA port, and they provide an adapter so that the second (DVI) port can also run a VGA monitor. If that card would run both my 21" Studio Displays independently as claimed, it would be the ideal solution, if the performance is adequate.
I do lots of Photoshop(CS2)adjustment of digital camera images and also make video movies with Final Cut Express, iDVD, etc., with both monitors set to 1152 X 870 at 75 Hertz. Would such a card as this one be up to the task with both monitors?
Every time I try to post the link to the Ebay auction for this card, everything in this text box disappears. So I'll just copy and paste the description of the card from the auction: "ATI Radeon 7000 64MB DDR Dual Monitor capable AGP Video Card with VGA, DVI-I, and S-Video Out and a DVI to VGA adapter. The video card has ATI's latest firmware (v226) with the latest ATI Displays support. It does not have any sleep issues. The card is capable of dual true independent/simultaneous monitor support with extended desktop. The adapter allows for dual VGA operation. This model has been tested in a G4 Tower, G4 Cube, and G5 with several versions of OS X including OS 10.4/Tiger. This card is guaranteed to work in any Macintosh G4 Tower, G4 Cube, or G5 Tower with OS 9.2.2 or later that has an available AGP slot."
Sounds good---maybe too good to be true. Any drawbacks to such a setup as this?
    Any advice most appreciated.
    Tom

Thanks for the info Malcolm. I checked out those links you provided, and it appears that buying two adapters for the presently-inistalled video card which would allow it to run two VGA monitors looks like a workable solution, all right. But it would be more expensive than just buying that Radeon AGP card to run both monitors, if the latter would work (that's what I'm still wondering).
Also, I notice that the DVI to VGA adapter sold by Apple has some poor reviews and seems to have glitches. It is reported by several people to be unreliable and seems to turn a lot of displays magenta, and in other cases requires a lot of wiggling or careful positioning to make it work right. Sounds like Apple needs to work on the design.
I appreciate the info, but I'm still favoring the Radeon 700 AGP card if someone can tell me it might work.
As to which card my Mac has in it right now, I can't tell just by looking at it (why don't they put an identifying sticker or something on the things?) and I can't connect any of my VGA displays to it yet to let the Mac report what it has in it, so it's still a mystery.
    Thanks again,
    Tom

  • ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x in Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 PMac G4

    Hi,
This is my first time posting to these discussion group... I've been going through related threads and have not found an answer to my problem...
I have a Gigabit Ethernet dual 450 G4. Awhile ago I upgraded the processor to a Sonnet 1.8ghz so I could run Leopard.
I just bough the ATI/Radeon 9800 Pro 128 AGP 4x/2x video card. I researched around and that seemed to be a card that would work in my machine. I even read a review on Amazon where someone had also upgraded to the 1.8 processor used this card with no issues.
I do have an older monitor - Apple Studio Display CRT with the ADC connector. So I also bought the Apple DVI to ADC adapter kit.
I installed the card and do not get any picture at all - I believe I have installed everything correctly. I'm pretty sure I can hear the fan on the video card in the machine. The monitor is getting power from the adapter since the button lights up when I press it - but it does not stay lit -- the monitor never turns on. Using my old graphics card the monitor makes a little "beep" when it turns on.
In reading the other topics I am wondering if it might be a power issue? According to Other World Computing's profile my machine has a max of 220 watts. Although they suggest this video card as one the will work in my machine.
I have disabled the hard drive that came with the machine (too small) and am using two Maxtor hard drives that I added - one ATA (120gb) and one SATA (500gb) that is connected to an SATA pci card. I also have two additional pci cards with usb 2.0/firewire ports.
In looking at the topics here I came across the link about taping the 3 and 11 pins on the video card. Even though the card I have is 4x/2x not 8x I thought I'd give it a shot. That did not work either.
Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

I don't wish to sound redundant here, but I've been reviewing the vendor's page:
It's OK- I don't mind beating this dead horse....
The maker says such to protect themselves from possible claims that may arise due to over loaded systems and power problems when their card is installed in said system.
Of course, 300w would be nice, but they didn't even specify the PSU rating a couple years ago. The Sawtooth, with it's 237w PSU, used to be listed as a compatible machine for the 9800...... They just didn't consider how far a Sawtooth might be modded.
Within reason, the early G4's (Sawtooths) are capable of using the Radeon 9800 Pro. The GE has the same 338w PSU as the DA (they are interchangeable), so there is plenty of power for the 9800.
One thing to remember, the requirements of the ADC port of the AGP slot are removed by using a non ADC card. This really changes the calculations of the power available.
It's kinda' a long post, but, if you care to get ALL the details, check the following:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=7065653&#7065653
I think you'll be satisfied with the explanation.......
Which leaves your second, and very appropriate, point.
The main enemy of all, though, isn't power. Heat is the biggest concern.
Reducing heat/increasing cooling by using a third party fan on the 9800 is highly recommended. The 9800 is a hot card, and the stock fan is prone to early failure.
Adding additional cooling to remove the extra heat produced by the 9800, by using an exausting PCI fan, will also help the PSU provide adequate voltage to the system, by reducing the amount of hot air moving out of the PSU.
Super heated air moving through the PSU reduces the cooling ability of the PSU. A hot PSU doesn't produce reliable power.
So, add the 9800, add some cooling, and enjoy!

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • What is the correct installation sequence for my ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB into my Quicksilver 867 G4?

    Hi.
I just got my used ATI Radeon 9800 PRO MAC AGP 128MB card.
What is the correct installation sequence into my Quicksilver 867 G4 running 10.4.11 on one drive 10.5 on another?
The original NVIDIA GeForce2 MX - 32MB SDRAM went bust.
Is the driver build in 10.4?
Do I remove the old driver?
If I need to install the driver that came with it, (10.3.6) should the card be installed first?
    What about firmware updates?
Thank you for all your time and patience.

  • K7N420 Pro AGP ATI Radeon 7200

    Hi,
This may sound like a stupid question to many - forgive me my ignorance.
I have a K7N420 Pro and I was thinking of fitting my ATI Radeon 7200 (64MB SDRAM). This is a "3 Golden fingered" AGP card 3.3V and 1.5V 2x/4x compatible.
I noticed my motherboard's manual says that only 1.5V AGP cards can be used.
All I really need to know is, can I fit this card to my MoBo without damaging it - Electrically (I know it fits physically).
Any help you can give me - greatly appreciated.
    Thanx in advance
    AxelUKToo

    Hello Again
Actually I did use the onboard video - and found that text on screen (WinXP) was barely readable - my Radeon however has no such handicap.
    Thanx for posts so far

  • Graphics card for PM G5 AGP-ATI Radeon 800 vs Nvidia Geforce 6800

Any comments as to which of the two cards ATI Radeon 800 vs Nvidia Geforce 6800 is better suited for Photoshop-Aperture work?
I need to upgrade from a Nvidia 5200 that does not support Aperture and want to support at least one 30" + one 23" Apple cinema displays.
My PM is an AGP one, so these are the two high end contenders on the retail market.

I have the 6800GT, which works fairly well for me. I think the X800 is overall a slightly faster card, depending on what is benchmarked. Here is something you might want to look at:
    http://www.barefeats.com/radx800.html
I don't know if you should pay more attention to the gaming benchmarks or the Motion rendering benchmark. I haven't seen any Aperture tests of these products. But I imagine if I was upgrading I would probably go for the X800. One thing I like about the 6800GT is it supports two 30 inch monitors. Unfortunately it takes up 2 slots. I have a pair of SATA cards in my Dual 2.5, so there go all my slots.

  • K8MM-ILSR PROBLEM with ATI Radeon 9550 of 256MB AGP port 8X...

Hello, I have a  motherboard MSI-K8MM-ILSR, when use the onboard video card works correctly, but the problem begins when I install a ATI Radeon 9550 of 256MB, is AGP port 8X and has its dissipator, in other machines it works well and your temperature is ok. My monitor is Samsung Sync Master 793s at 75 Hz. The Problem is the following: the machine crash and the video is distorted and it is congealed, this happens after playing a little, the video card drivers are updated (Catalyst 5,6), I'm use Windows XP Service Pack 1, Thanks... and excuse me my English...

Some other options you can try:
    - uninstall the previous vid-drivers and use driver cleaner software to uninstall everything
    - disable onboard video in the BIOS;
    - set fastwrite to disabled/no (if it's there)
    - set AGP Aperture Size to 128 (if it doesn't do anything, go to 64);
    - set AGP port to 4x.
    - Start hoping  .... good luck!
(BTW, the last two options may cause your system to operate slightly slower, but it's hardly worth mentioning ... )

I returned my Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4600 PNY Verto back to PNY last year, after I had it for a few months, and it kept crashing at AGP 4x. They sent me a new one, I tried it at 4x, with the latest Nvidia Detonator drivers, I have tried it under fresh installs of Windows 2000 SP3, and WindowsXP, both crashing when the card is set to 4x. I believe there is major bugs in this board and it does not truly support AGP 4x. I am goin to try and RMA my board back to MSI, demanding a board that can support my card, or a suitable replacement that will support my current CPU and memory. This is the first MB I ever bought from MSI, and depending on how they resolve this situation, it will probably be the last. This is the 10th machine I have built on my own, I have just not had to time to deal with this issue, and have dealt with it at AGP 2x, but it is slow as hell, especially with games like Battlefield 1942.

  • Will the mid-04 AGP 2.5 DP work with PCI-X graphics (ati radeon 7000?)

Okay now is there any possible fix? I just turned it on and it the display came up just fine. But then I tried to boot it off of my powerbook from firewire and no show.I don't have it screwed down because I have been swapping cards but should I try that or are there any other suggestions?

  • BIOS AGP setings for MSI6712 (KT4V-L) using ATI Radeon 9600XT video card ?

Because I am having graphic issues with Battlefield-2 since the new patch, I want to know what should be the BIOS AGP setings to go accordingly with my ATI Radeon 9600XT video card ?
I have all or part of the following BIOS AGP setings below. I picked this up on the net but I don't recall all the values I have as I am at the office right now.
    **AGP timing Control**
    AGP Mode: 8x  <== that's what I remember having
AGP Fast Write: Enabled  <== that's what I remember having
AGP Aperture Size: 256 MB  <== that's what I changed it to yesterday
    AGP Master 1 W/S Write: Enabled  <== that's what I remember having
    AGP Master 1 W/S Read: Disabled <== that's what I think I have
AGP Read Synchronization: Disabled <== don't remember what I have
PCI Delay Transaction: Enabled <== don't remember if I have it

I still don't think this is mobo thing. Please use the Internet. There are lots of people having problems with the patch you mention.
One thing I come across is that you should install something called Special Forces b e f o r e  you install the patch.
