Radeon HD 3870 and Mac OS X Lion

I've installed Lion on two systems, a somewhat older Mac Pro desktop (2007) and a somewhat newer Mac Book Pro (late 2009). It's running well on the laptop, and not so well on the desktop. The desktop is older, but it's pretty well stocked: 8 GB RAM, 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core processor. There are a number of issues with it, but the most vexing issues have to do with video.
Apple Motion runs SUPER SLOWLY anytime I do anything that has to do with a video clip (which, given the product, is usually). Simply clicking on the filename for a video clip anywhere (in the library browser, in the timeline) sends the beachball o' death spinning anywhere from 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. It eventually subsides, and I can work with the clip (for that interaction...to move it or whatever), but the next time I click on it (or any other video clip) it's the same story.
Also...
Quicktime Player is hosed. It doesn't work properly at all. Not only does it fail to play some clips (that play just fine on my laptop...any played just fine before I upgraded to Lion), but the player itself behaves strangely. For example there are parts of a player window that behave as though they aren't there, so if I try to click on the title bar, or anywhere in the upper third, to grab the window and drag it to another location, it's as though I clicked on the desktop in the background and my computer switches to the finder. The windows themselves don't look right...the corners are no longer rounded, though I can that they should be - yet they're in a black bounding box.
And in the finder, I cannot see previews for valid video files. Not in the icon view, or in quickview. These are files that worked fine before, and work fine on my laptop (they're fresh out of Motion in a format the Mac can read).
I reset my SMC and PRAM, even reinstalled Lion.
No change.
This leads me to suspect the video card...
Anybody else have this card, or having issues like this with another card? It makes it basically impossible to work with video on my Ma

Hi Dima,
No, it won't work with the 2|6. Sorry.
If someone wishes to donate one, or if I find a cheap one on eBay, I'll see what I can do. But it would be very difficult to write a driver without access to the device for testing.

  • ATi Radeon HD 3870 for Mac is out...

"AMD unveils Radeon HD 3870 for Mac & PC"
AMD made a late announcement on Thursday expanding its Radeon for Mac lineup. The ATI-branded Radeon HD 3870 for Mac & PC is AMD's first 3000-series card for Macs and also one of the first to explicitly support more than one platform: users can install the card now in either a Mac Pro tower or a Windows PC and swap it to the other platform later, including for Boot Camp. As a new-generation part, the new chipset has twice as much performance per watt as the outgoing Radeon HD 2900 XT, the company claims.
AMD's card is virtually equal to the Windows-only edition with 320 stream (pixel and vertex) processors, improved power use, and support for newer graphics shader effects either in DirectX 10.1 when in Windows or OpenGL 2.0 in OS X and other environments.
For connections, the new Radeon HD board is built to outpace Apple's own offerings with both dual-link DVI ports that handle 30-inch displays as well as an S-video jack for analog video from TVs. AMD is shipping the card by the end of June in a 512MB version for $219 and expects it to be available at a number of Mac resellers.

Summary: The 3870 is a little worse than the 8800 at games, but it's cheaper, better at Core Image, and supports Crossfire under Windows on the Mac Pro, where as the 8800 GT can't be in SLI mode on the Mac Pro, making the 3870 the best overall solution.
Edit: I'm pretty sure it will require Leopard simply because of how Mac OS X distributes drivers generally.

yes you need the updates and patches.
Only some of the drivers that Windows will automatically install at times
and always make sure to insure it is using restore points
do all the maintenance andsuch as normal
use MS Security Essentials for AV is really top notch
    Clean disk space
Use WinClone new program to inisure you have a restore image

lower your font size unless you have difficulty
    MS Security Essentials is excellent
Then again maybe time to investigate Windows 8 RP (which uses Defender)

Windows has a software updater built into Windows and when you install the Boot Camp drivers then it will install an Apple software updater also. I believe Windows is set to automatically download and install your updates as does the Apple software Updater. They both will update the individual files it needs to periodically.
"Microsoft updates" and "Windows updates" are basically the same thing in Windows. Are you talking about the "Windows support software" when downloading from Boot Camp Assistant? Apple installs a software updater for it's Boot Camp drivers in Windows 7 so you can do it manually or automatically.
The "Hot Fix" your referring to is only for certain motherboards built from other Windows only computer manufacturers and does NOT pertain to any Apple computers.
If you have a problem with your computer then it's best to ask a specific question so we can help better.

  • How do I set up my Time Machine and Mac Mini with Lion Server so i have one wifi loop in the house?

    HELP!
So I have had a Time Machine wifi loop at the house for approx. 6 years. I run two Macbooks, 2 iPhones, 2 iTouch and a Samsung Smart Blueray on the loop.
I just bought a Mac Mini with Lion Server. When setting it up I'm not sure what or how I managed to do, but I now have 2 wifi loops, one doesn't lock and niether will support the Samsung BlueRay. Also, each time I want to go online with one of the other Mac devices i have to relog into the wifi loop.
Can someone please walk me through the fix. The mac Mini is plugged straight into the Time Machine to recevie its internet connection.
    Thanks!

You often see this limit of 10 clients in wireless hotspots but I have yet to see it in an adsl modem.. most strange way to pay for a service that is really irrelevant how many clients you use.
Have a go .. I recently setup a TC to help a guy run his Roku.. and this setup worked well.. I have no idea if it can work in your case.
Lets say the IP you get is 192.168.2.1-10 .. doesn't matter what it really is. And the adsl modem is 192.168.2.254
(Assuming they are private addresses.. if they are public IP you can just use the DHCP and NAT. )
But go to the airport utility.. I think you need to run v5 at least to change DNS.. but you can do the same thing in v6 using static but no dns changes.
Now you set the IP of the TC manually.. This address might need to be in the dhcp range of the modem to work. You can set the DNS to same IP as the router address.. ie home address of the modem. Or you can use another DNS.. whatever you like.
Then set DHCP for clients that will join.. this can then expand the scope of addresses..
It worked without a NAT error.. although I am not sure exactly how.. on paper it should not be able to work but did.. have a go.. otherwise there is perhaps another way.. but it is complicated.
Give us an example from a computer plugged into the modem of what IP .. subnet mask .. Gateway and DNS you get. Then I can fine tune the values for it.

  • Does Icloud sync for bookmarks between Ipad and mac pro with lion work for anyone?

My wife has an Ipad 2 and Macbook Pro tunning Lion. Bookmarks and docs do not sync on icloud. I see from the discussions many are having this problem. My question is does this work for anyone? Am wasting my time trying to make it work?

It works now, but it was a bit of a mess for a bit.
I turned off bookmark syncing on all devices but one, I exported my bookmarks to the desktop and deleted them from safari, thus deleting them from iCloud, I then added them back from the desktop. On my other devices I deleted all my bookmarks, turned bookmark syncing back on and chose to merge.

  • ATI Radeon 5770 in 2006 Mac Pro with Lion

Hit an issue with my 2006 Mac Pro when the video card died in late October. At that point I was running Lion and had kept on top of software updates. Being on a restricted budget, I have purchased and installed an ATI Radeon 5770 card from the Apple store as I cannot afford a new Mac Pro. I knew that before I did this there may be incompatability problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros, and this seems to be the case.
However, having trawled through the forums it seems some users are able to run this card on 1.1 machines with Lion. So I am now wondering if I have another issue - I'd much rather stick with Lion if I can rather than revert to Snow Leopard. Now I have installed the card things seem fine with the display - the 30" cinema display no longer has blocks of pixels all over it. On boot up the screen is a pale grey, the Apple logo appears in the centre with the busy timer underneath. I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears. Everything sounds like the machine is booting normally but it just won't progress beyond this point. I have tried holding shift to boot it in safe mode but the same things happens.
If anyone can help point me in the right direction of what I should try next I'd be profoundly grateful!
    Vinny

I knew that before I did this there may be incompatibility problems with this card and Lion on the older Mac Pros,
Although some users have complained of problems, their wounds may be self-inflicted. Use of a non-Apple ATI 5770 or failure to upgrade to at least 10.6.5 are high on the list. The main "issue", if you can even call it that, is the card runs more slowly than its published benchmarks due to PCIe 1 slots in the Mac Pro 1,2 and 2,1.
I also get a loading bar for about 20 seconds. This gets to about 20% then disappears.
That progress bar is indicative of unresolved Hard Drive problems. You need to boot to an alternate source of software (Hold Command-R at startup for Recovery_HD if you are running later than 10.6.8) and check the SMART Status and then select Macintosh_HD or whatever you renamed it and ( Repair Disk ). Repeat until all problems are resolved or it gets stuck. If you need help, copy the EXACT error message back here.

  • Photoshop CS4 and Mac OS10.7 Lion

Photoshop CS4 is not working with Lion.  How can I fix?

    Details are needed:
First of all, what kind of Mac?  If it's one of the Macs with the infamous Intel integrated graphics (iMac, Mac Book, Mac Mini), we need not inquire further.  The number of bugs introduced by Lion in these machines is too numerous to go into.
Otherwise, it would be useful to know whether CS4 is updated to version 11.0.2, Lion to 10.7/2, whether you Repaired Permissions with Apple's Disk Utility before and after every install, upgrade or update of the application and the OS, as well *** what other troubleshooting steps you have taken so far.
Please read this FAQ for advice on how to ask your questions correctly for quicker and better answers:

    Thanks!
    Wo Tai Lao Le
    我太老了
PS— Beyond that, you may want to consider upgrading while you can, as CS4 will be out of the upgrade loop the moment CS6 is announced, and that should/could be in a matte of weeks.  The new Adobe upgrade policy will be one version back only as of CS6.

  • Adobe CS 3 and Mac OS X Lion

A recent visit at the Genius Bar suggests that I need to update/upgrade to OS X Lion, but my version of Adobe Creative Suite (CS 3) won't run in the OS X Lion environment.  This is a deal breaker for migration to OS X Lion.  Is there any updated information about CS 3's compatibility with OS X Lion?  WIth the looming expiration of MobileMe, I'm feeling painted into a corner.

Well still no solution. It's unfortunate that a company as innovative as APPLE always seems to fall short in the most basic areas. Never will understand it.
At this point I've given up. I got a copy of virtual box and Windows 7 for the one task I use every day, which worked in Safari 5.0.6.
Thanks all for the help. If anyone comes across this and has other suggestions I'm open to trying anything. As frustrated as I am with Apple and the Mac it's still my OS of choice.

  • Why won't my iphone 4 and mac with mountain lion sync my messages?

I am trying to continue a conversation from my iphone to my mac. It doesn't work like icloud pushing my e-mails and songs from one to the other. That works just about perfectly. But for imessages I can't get it to work. I even turned my caller ID to my email address. It really doesn't work well at all. Am I doing something wrong? And more importantly, IS ANYONE ELSE HAVING TROUBLE?
    Thank you!

IF all of you guys were running the Messgaes Beta under Lion, before you moved up to Mountain Lion, that may be the culprit.
At any rate, do the following:
Under Messages application, DELETE the account that is not syncing.
Should just be your Apple ID'd account.
Do this by going into Messages/Preferences/Accounts,
Selecting the account in the sidebar and pressing the minus sign at the bottom of the sidebar.
    Quit Messages
Then under the Finder menu at the top of your desktop, navigate to:
Library/Preferences folder. To do so, while selecting the Go menu item, press the Alt key, and the Library will list.
    Select it
Inside the Preferences folder, locate all the files that have
    com.apple.imagent
    com.apple.imessage
    com.apple.imservice
And drag them to the trash.
Now Open the Messages application and add your Apple ID account using the plus sign, under Messages/Preferences/Accounts.
If you also deleted the files above that had FaceTime in them, you will need to open that app an re enter your Apple ID account info there too.
All Messages "syncing" should now work.

  • Elements 9 and MAC with Mountain Lion

Elements 9 will open but not run, just get the whirling color wheel.ave to force quit. I have upgraded to Mountain Lion. Used to work perfectly

    Hi brunohailey,
If you think this solution can work any better for you, please do the following-
    1. Uninstall PSE (ensure you have the product set up files and serial key aside)
    2. Go to ~/library/Preferences and delete the following files-
         com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist
         com.adobe.PhotoshopElements.plist.lockfile
         Adobe Photoshop Elements x paths
         Adobe Photoshop Elements x settings
    3. Go to ~/library/Saved App States and trash all PSE related files
    Thanks

  • ATI Radeon HD 3870 Graphics Card for Mac debuts

    http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,147040-c,graphicsboards/article.html
AMD on Thursday announced the ATI Radeon HD 3870 for Mac and PC Edition. The new card is expected to ship at the end of June for US$219.
The card works in the PCI Express slots of both first-generation and second-generation Mac Pro systems, and features 512MB of 256-bit GDDR4 frame buffer memory and 320 stream processors. It's designed as a graphics upgrade for Mac Pros -- even those that may have come equipped with the Nvidia GeForce 8800 card introduced earlier this year. AMD claims its new Radeon card runs faster and costs less than the GeForce 8800 GT, which is only available from the Apple Store and costs $279.
The graphics processor can crank up to 70 gigabytes per second bandwidth using a 775MHz engine. That translates, according to AMD's internal benchmarks, into *30 to 180 percent better performance in Apple's Motion 3 software than the GeForce 8800*; slow Motion performance has been an Achilles' heel of Nvidia's rival card since its introduction.
    http://ati.amd.com/products/radeonhd3800/macpc/index.html

    Rob has it benchmarked:
    http://www.barefeats.com/harper16.html
I'm going to definitely buy this as soon as it's online. I'll order it through Rob's link too to reward him for all the work he's done on this issue.
Now, how about a refund on my GeForce 8800 upgrade, Apple?

  • How can I make my PowerPC/Windows programs work in Mac OS X Lion?

In a few months I will be buying a MacBook Pro and I have a lot of old games that I would like to be able to play on it. But those games are Windows/PowerPC only and Mac OS X Lion does not support PowerPC. How can I make my old programs work in Mac OS X Lion?

For porting Windows programs to Mac OS X, you can check out Wineskin.  It can be very simple to very hard to do though... its all a case by case basis.  The older the game is the more likely you are to get it to work easily though.
