Radeon HD 3870 Experience...

I finally received this card today from ATI directly. I bought this card to replace my Radeon X1900. The card worked great all day. My Mac seemed to be running a little smoother and I was very happy.
I now have my X1900 back in the computer to type this message and a message to ATI. The card completely took a dump about an hour ago. Colors and strange blocks all over my screen. When I moved the mouse, the whole screen flickered. I dont know what else to do now. I am not able to use my computer for anything now. Anyone else with this same experience? or Any? Thanks

I just wanted to do a quick update. I tried completely uninstalling the drivers (including running driver sweeper) and reinstalling the drivers. That made no difference.
However, because I've seen quite a few reports of this card working for other people, I decided to exchange it for another 3870 in hopes that maybe I got a bum card. Well I did the exchange yesterday, and I have been in Bootcamp-gaming-bliss ever since!
So I guess my 2 cents is try the complete uninstall/reinstall of drivers (thanks hatter for the recommendation on that) and if it still doesn't work, maybe you got a bad card like I did.
I just wanted to toss out some hope for others having the same problem.

DKA790GX and Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 OCE Cards

Okay I have a MSI DKA790GX motherboard. (MS-7550 v1.21) with latest BIOS 1.9 loaded, a Phenom X4 9550 CPU, 8GB RAM, and 2 Visiontek ATI Radeon HD 3870 OCE Cards.
Without any drivers installed, everything works fine. With both cards in and set up with the crossfire connection installed, you can't even complete the installation of the catalyst drivers without it locking up.
This is in Windows 7 64 bit, and have tried both Ultimate and Professional, just for kicks. With just one card installed, driver installation completes successfully and everything works as normal. With the drivers installed first like this, if I then install the second card i get a blue screen on ATIMKDAG.sys. I have tried switching the order of the cards to verify that each card works by itself.
I have also tried both the latest catalyst 10.2 drivers and the manufacturers drivers which are 9.something
I have the same 2 cards in a K9A2 Platinum running fine on Vista Ultimate 64 and now I am somewhat afraid to update it to Win 7.
About the only thing I haven't tried yet is to do the same setup in a Win 7 32 environment to see if it's any different. but a quad core CPU and 8GB RAM is kind of wasted on a 32 bit OS.
Has anyone had any similar experience with this? I am not sure where the blame is, but I suspect it is in the ATI drivers and not the OS or the motherboard.
I am open to any suggestions.

PSU? Brand and details?[look for them over PSU sticker]?

Radeon HD 3870 + Catalyst 9.8 & fglrx drivers = Black Screen. (arch64)

I've installed Arch on my Alienware M17.
First off, ATI and RadeonHD drivers do work. I have KDE 4.3 installed, etc., etc.
I do know how bad ATI support is. I used to use Ubuntu 8.10, and upgrading to 9.04 had borked my video bad.
However, like the title says, installing the Catalyst drivers brings me to a black screen that requires a hard reset/poweroff.

Before installing fglrx, I had installed ati and radeonhd drivers, got the display working, uninstalled them (libgl and vesa as well), installed fglrx (all from a fresh Arch install), tweaked xorg.conf, added fglrx to Modules in rc.conf, and viewed the Xorg.0.log file with no "(EE)" lines.
I noticed that there are a lot of warnings regarding AIGLX, and installing catalyst from AUR displays a message (warning?) saying something like "ati-dri" was a dependancy and/or is missing.
modprobe -l | grep fglrx
has the result of: "video/fglrx"
I even installed the lib32-catalyst-utils libraries and that had no effect that I could see.
Please help. This is all that is stopping me from giving into Arch.

Problems with Compiz and a Radeon HD 3870

Hello,
i'm a new Archlinux user and have some probs with the compiz window-manager. forgive my english, but i'm not an english guy ;-).
my problem is, that compiz doesn't work. i get a white screen when starting fusion-icon. i tried all of the driver, also the proprietary, but only the xf86-video-ati does work for me. my card is an radeon 3870.

Two questions about ATI RADEON HD 3870

I've been in touch with macsales.com and they recommend the ATI RADEON HD 3870 for the Mac Pro Xeon (late 2006-2007) running 10.5. But they were unable to answer w/ 100% certainty:
1. That all I need to connect this card (it has 2 DVI ports) to my Samsung SynchMaster with one DVI cable connected "DVI to DVI" and one VGA - WITH - a DVI to VGA adapter on the VGA cable.
For those who don't know, the Samsung monitor must have both DVI and VGA connected to operate.
2. I've read on this (Displays) forum that this card will only work "up to" 10.5 and won't work if I upgrade to 10.6. Is this correct? Also, is there a chance that Apple will "correct" 10.6 to work with the HD 3870 in a future point release? (I'm not yet willing to jump to 10.6, so this is for the near future when I do.)
Less important "#3" question: is it possible to make the HD 3870 backward compatible with 10.4? I ask because I'm running 10.4 on a separate internal drive so that I can continue to use some older apps for mission critical tasks. Eventually, I still plan to get rid of 10.4 - it's just not possible right away.

Thanks for the added input on the 3870. I also got confirmation that the "dual connection" (AVG + DVI) on the Samsung display can be worked out with an adapter.
But I've made up my mind: there's just too many counter-balancing factors. I'm pretty sure now that I can wait to see if the Geforce 7300 burns out. If it does so in the next 290 days, I'll just have Apple replace it for free since my AppleCare would take care of the cost.
I'm a retired purchasing agent so this 're-deciding' (with a lot more at stake) is normal for me. In this case (mine), I no longer see much advantage in having Snow Leopard. It's still new and needs at least one more upgrade / debugging release. Besides: I haven't mentioned that I have other ways I haven't used to boost the Mac Pro's performance.
As a "compensatory purchase" I just placed an order for two more RAM modules which will fill remaining RAM slots. That alone will give me a little more juice (as you say). These cost one-third that for a new graphics card (or less). This should tide me over - still running 10.4 and 10.5 on two drives. When my Apple Care runs out, I may well be in a position to buy a new Mac Pro with mature Snow Leopard, better graphics card, etceteras.

The GFX is a silent one, so a bit higher temp is normal, but 110 degrees?! However, everything seams to be running just fine at that temp...

1,1 and a Radeon HD 3870

Hello all,
One of my users has a Mac Pro 1,1 whose ATI Radeon X1900 is crapping out. I've been looking for a Radeon HD 3870 (or at this point, anything that's compatible with a 1,1).
Does anyone know if any Radeon HD 3870 (e.g. Sapphire, etc.) will work out-of-the-box in the Mac Pro 1,1, or would it need to be flashed prior to installation?
The Mac Pro itself is running 10.6.3 and has two monitors: a 30" and a 20"; both dual-link DVI.

could be a more viable option than the 8800 card for pro apps that use core graphics, also these cards are pretty energy efficient so a couple of these installed should not put too much strain on the system

What are you using these cards for? Do you need more than two monitors? If you are using Final Cut Studio at all, go with the single 4870 video card. Final Cut only supports two monitors, and often has issues if more than one video card is installed, especially if they are the exact same make and model.
If you really (really) need to run 3-4 displays (my only guess as to why you would need three GT120s) you could try the Radeon 3870 (http://eshop.macsales.com/item/ATI%20Technologies/100435928/) as they only require one auxiliary power tap each and take up a single PCIe slot. That would give you four DVI outputs, while using up only two slots, with the only downside being they are a bit noisy. There are some quiet cooling options you might be able to find that could help that. The 4870 is still your best option though, if you are at all concerned about performance, noise, reliability, and compatibility.

AMD made a late announcement on Thursday expanding its Radeon for Mac lineup. The ATI-branded Radeon HD 3870 for Mac & PC is AMD's first 3000-series card for Macs and also one of the first to explicitly support more than one platform: users can install the card now in either a Mac Pro tower or a Windows PC and swap it to the other platform later, including for Boot Camp. As a new-generation part, the new chipset has twice as much performance per watt as the outgoing Radeon HD 2900 XT, the company claims.
AMD's card is virtually equal to the Windows-only edition with 320 stream (pixel and vertex) processors, improved power use, and support for newer graphics shader effects either in DirectX 10.1 when in Windows or OpenGL 2.0 in OS X and other environments.
For connections, the new Radeon HD board is built to outpace Apple's own offerings with both dual-link DVI ports that handle 30-inch displays as well as an S-video jack for analog video from TVs. AMD is shipping the card by the end of June in a 512MB version for $219 and expects it to be available at a number of Mac resellers.

Summary: The 3870 is a little worse than the 8800 at games, but it's cheaper, better at Core Image, and supports Crossfire under Windows on the Mac Pro, where as the 8800 GT can't be in SLI mode on the Mac Pro, making the 3870 the best overall solution.
Edit: I'm pretty sure it will require Leopard simply because of how Mac OS X distributes drivers generally.

ATI Radeon HD 3870 Mac&Pc edition and Accelero S1

I just installed the ATI Radeon HD 3870 Mac & Pc edition on my Mac Pro (first edition).
While the fan on the card is not very loud and acceptable I would like to take the fan out and install the Accelero S1 cooler instead ( http://www.arctic-cooling.com/vga2.php?idx=138&data=7&disc= ).
Has anyone installed one (accelero s1) lately?
Any objections?

Just installed this. It's great, quiet. Took about 20 minutes. Take your time and the install is easy. I didn't use the spacer clips as they're not necessary, and a bit hard to install. I ordered the Artic cleaning and prep solutions and I'm glad I did. Good luck.

I know it says Mac on it but wanted to check with the pros before I take the plunge. Also, there are some GT8800's on ebay for about £140 inc del that they say are modified for 06/07 models but I'm a bit unsure about ordering something of this nature from hong kong as I have had problems before.

The 8800GT was avaiable in two flavours, one for the 2008 Mac Pros and one for the 'legacy' 2006/2007 Mac Pros.
So if not perfectly sure which one you will get, I would advise against buying one.
Besides, according to the Barefeats test, the 3870 is overall the better one.

Radeon HD 3870 overheating in Boot Camp

I'm on an early 2008 Mac Pro with a Radeon 3870 that's never given me any trouble, but ever since upgrading to Lion and Windows 7, I get overheating issues in Boot Camp -- the monitor shuts down and the system freezes, needing a hard reboot.
Has anyone else had issues like this? I'm unsure whether to tweak the card (thermal paste, using software to force the fan on) or to upgrade to one of the newer Radeons.

Radeon HD 3870 PCIe 2.0 overheating and loud fan problem fixed?

Hello everybody.
I just wanted to know if anybody on here has bought an 3870 lately and still has the overheating/constant loud fan issue. I have been told by Macsales that this issue has been fixed on the new cards? Is that correct? I am still shopping for a card for my MacPro 2007 1,1. Don't really have the money to buy the 4870 and the only other option I have is the 3870. Pretty sad that there are no other ones in that $200 (or less) price range. Every other card for that Mac version is in the $350-$450 range.
Anyway, just wanted to know if these 3870 issues have been fixed.

My experience with the 3870: I have 2 of them for 2 computers and have never got the fan issues reported all over this site. I dont think it applies too ALL 3870s'. They have been pretty much silent or close too. Its a great card with Motion and maybe I was tripping, but it seemed to make the interface a bit more snappy.
Having said that, I have removed them now and replaced them with the 8800, due to Snow leopard and support for Open CL (FYI 3870 does not support Open CL, which is a shame, why? baffles me!) not that apps support that yet, but soon.

10.5.7 = fix for ATI Radeon HD 3870 fan?

Has anyone with the 3870 high fan speed issue upgraded to 10.5.7? If so, did it fix the problem? I'm in the middle of a project now, can't upgrade for a couple weeks at least.

After replacing 2 8800GT's in a year I decided to get an ATI instead. The fan has been loud as **** ever since. Have to constantly monitor the temp while playing certain games with Bootcamp and turn up other fans with SMC Fan Control before booting to XP or this card would be replaced by now too. Now I use Fan controller to drown out the everchanging sound of the card's fan with other fans. All 10.5.7 has done for me is made VMWare Fusion not work, which I'm told that even if it could open up a virtual machine, the 3d acceleration is broken from the OSX update. Every time Apple has a major OS upgrade scheduled to be released in the future their security updates manage to screw up everything. Coincidence? Maybe, but it has happened with all upgrades since I bought my G5 back in 2003. It's a **** good thing I've been an Apple person for over 25 years so I'm used to fixing what they won't.
