[Radeon] MSI RX9800 128MB WORSE After RMA

After months of unsuccessfully troubleshooting my 3d artifacting problems (random triangular polygon stretching that would only occur while playing games) with my never overclocked MSI 9800, I finally gave up and RMA'd it last week.  The RMA process went without a hitch and only took a little over a week.  It should be noted that I had to "rollback" to my 3 year old OEM Gateway GeForce 3 during the RMA (which still works just fine, imagine that), so no Battlefield 2 for me...
Finally I got my card back and I swapped it back into my machine.  I anxiously pressed the power button only to see that the Windows XP boot graphic (the one with the blue loading bar) had large chunks of artifacting on it.  How can that be?  Windows loads and I see little blue and red blocks popping up around the screen, along with other artifacting in menus, graphics, etc.  How did the RMA make my card even WORSE?!  It may of had problems in games before but it NEVER artifacted in Windows.
I started a game up just to see what would happen and the intro movie had a large red triangle covering half the screen.  When I actually got into the game itself the screen went black and had about 6 small squares of distorted pixels.  I tried to Alt-Tab out of the game since I couldn't see anything on the screen and when I got back into Windows the screen was completely covered with artifacts, so bad I couldn't even see where to click.  The mouse pointer (what was left of it...) was even covered with artifacts.
Long story short, RMA'ing my card to MSI cost me shipping charges and made my card EVEN WORSE than it was before.  RMA is obviously not a solution for this card anymore and I will be contacting MSI for a replacement card.
I really hope no one else has a similar experience when RMA'ing their product to MSI...

Richard,
I didn't ask anyone for help with troubleshooting my problem and rudely asking for my system specs via metaphor isn't exactly helping things either.
System specs are irrelevant in the case of the RMA for a very simple reason:  Nothing changed in my computer from the time I RMA'd the card to the time I got it back and put it in.  The only thing that got worse was my video card, which simply means the video card IS the problem.  Believe me, I tried everything to get this card to work..  like I said in my first post.  The time for troubleshooting is long since over, it's time for MSI to replace my card with a new one.
I posted this here so other MSI customers could see what potentially could happen when they RMA their products...
I'll be updating this thread after I call MSI tomorrow.

  • RX9800 128MB, weird artifacting...

First off here's my system specs:
    Antec TruePower 430 Power Supply
    MSI RX9800 128MB
    Asus P4PE Motherboard w/ 2.53 P4
    ATI Catalyst 4.8 Drivers
    Nothing is overclocked...
I just got this MSI 9800 Pro a few days ago and everything works fine except at certain times (almost randomly) after playing certain games (Doom3, UT2004, America's Army) actual 3d shapes stretch and disfigure and some textures disappear completely. Here's a screenshot I captured of the problem:
    http://www.presseject.com/wtf2.png
This problem does not occur with Battlefield: Vietnam, Battlefield: 1942, Far Cry and other games I have tried. I thought I had fixed the problem after Doom3 did not show the problem anymore but it just popped up again when I was playing America's Army a few minutes ago (1280x960 4x AA, 8x AF 85mhz refresh)
I have looked everywhere and can't find anyone that is having a problem similar to mine. My CPU temp right now is 46C, Motherboard temp is 37C (basically room temperature, I live in Las Vegas) so I don't think this is a heat related issue.
i've done some further testing into this:
    1) I ran ATI Tool on "Scan for Artifacts" mode and the artifacts appeared around 3:10 into the test
    2) I removed the MSI power cable and used one from my PSU, ran ATI Tool again and artifacts appeared 1:30 into the test
obviously not a power cable problem, but now i'm even more confused...
This card should not be overheating straight out of the box, and if I can't get this problem resovled very quickly I'm going to have to return the card for something else.

Damn I sorry to hear that hope you find a fix for it soon Im planning on getting this card but Im seeing a few bad threads on these cards   .  Have you tried using an older driver set? see if that helps or maybe turning off fastwrites that doesnt work for me so I leave it off all the time. I would keeping trying diff drivers sets if that doesnt help then I would send it back if you can.Let us know if you fixed this problem. I also live in Las Vegas   Nice city from what I hear

  • MSI RX9800 (the green one)... monitor wont work after install

    Hi,
I just bought a MSI RX9800 (green one) and after I plugged it in and plugged in the power when I turned on the computer after the initial loading screen my monitor (Viewsonic 19' CRT E90fb) turns off and gives me this message:
    i Viewmeter
    FH: + 35.1 Khz
    FV: + 39.1 mhz
    Status: OVER
    and this happens everytime
ive tried replugging everything and done everything I could. I don't know whats wrong
I just plugged in my geforce ti4800se and am using that at the moment with no error
    what can i do?

    Some good reading

I do not know what you did prior to uninstalling the card.
What steps did you take to prepare for the installation?
What card were you using prior?
Without some pertinent info, I'm afraid all you'll get are guesses, or you might get lucky and someone mught have had that exact problem, but the odds of that are slim unless your really lucky
Please read at least the first link and then skim the second one
    My guess:
You didn't uninstall the card and drivers properly prior to installing the new one.
    My solution:
I suggest downloading and installing a utility called "Driver Cleaner" http://www.driverheaven.net
Use the control Panel's Add Remove Programs to remove the nVidia drivers.
Follow the directions supplied with DC and when you restart the PC and the found new hardware wizard pops up, cancel it. Then shutdown the PC and swap the card with your new one, restart and load the new drivers as instructed.
I highly recommend using the utility, especially when changing vendors.
I also recommend looking on the Viewsonic website and see if there are FAQ's related to this issue.
You could finaly try the card in another PC and see if it gives the same error.
Also, what connector are you using to connect the monitor to the card.

  • Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb troubles :\

    Hey,
I'm not used to post things on a forum but now I'm getting quite desperate. I've been searching and surfing the net for possible solutions but none worked until now.
Sometimes my v-card's drivers hang, or that's what I think. The image freezes, but the mouse can keep on moving (nothing will react anymore and even when I'm typing this, it happened already 1 times). After that "freeze" of about 2-3 seconds, the screen will "click" like you hear when you change resolution in the display properties. After that, the screen comes back and most of the time, everything is ok, except from the fact that sometimes a window like this (mozilla) is resized to 800*600 or 640*480 size .. (not sure)
But sometimes, the screen goes black after clicking and will never come back, only a reset can help this situation.
And sometimes (rare) the screen begins to show artifacts on the screen (not in games, just windows) and this gets worse and worse until you can't see  and have to reset.
When anything of this happens during a game, a recover doesn't seem to be possible at all.
     -> this suggests it's a driver problem...
Now I've read about fastwrites (not available in current bios - but i heard it's available in the new bios which i didn't upgrade yet because i'm a bit afraid of the procedure as I don't have a FAT system nor a win98/ME boot disk and I'm using winXP pro) which I disabled in the catalyst drivers
I've tried to lower the AGP acceleration
    I've tried Omega drivers
I've turned on and off the VPU recover
I've checked my PSU - even disconnected everything but v-card, hdd and nic and my PSU (Antec case) can give 16A/28A/35A in 12v/5v/3.33v rails...
A clean install of windows won't help
    Direct X version doesn't matter
And all starts after the first catalyst driver installation after the fresh windows install.
    Please help,
If you think there's some info missing, don't hesitate to ask, I'm an experience PC user so you can ask me pretty much everything about anything (I think) and I'll followup this post frequently. Anything that can help me find the cause will be appreciated. Until now I didn't want to return the card under warranty because I know I'll have to miss it quite some time then. :(
    PC spec:
    MSI 6547 (Sis645) Mobo
    P4 1.6A (OC'ed or not, doesn't change anything)
    Hercules Radeon 9800 Pro 128Mb
    Windows XP Pro - SP1

i read that the bios update adds the "enable fast write" function, but at what value is it whitout the update ?
if it's enabled by default, then it could be the problem
but i'll look into the site you gave and try to flash the bios tomorrow
i'll post the results and try the card in another pc if it didn't work :\

  • [Radeon] MSI ATI Based Video Drivers???

I have MSI RX9800 Pro-TD128 Video Card and I haven't found any new MSI driver for this video card since 2004 year  Why is that - will MSI make any new drivers for the good old RADEON 9xxx series card or not? I see that they have made new drivers but for the X8XX series and not one driver for the older models    why is that??? And one other question - can I use a newer driver for X850PE for my video card (I think - that I can't use it but maybe I'm wrong)?

    Yes that's hard to follow
Quote from: bassmadrigal on 18-July-05, 13:10:22
Plus it doesn't help that ATI releases monthly driver updates (not sure if NVidia does). Makes it hard for MSI to keep up!
And it's crazy too    monthly waiting for a new driver lol
Nvidia at least wait two months or something else.
And yes Glenn thanks for the clarification, MSI and other manufactures have another goals instead of producing drivers constantly.
    kind regards.

i just upgraded cpu and ram on this box and bought the vid card for sum added punch in my gaming. it was previously running an ati 7500 4x agp card with the latest omega drivers.
msi rx9800 came in the mail today. tested with last 2 ati releases of catlyst, tested with drivers on the install disk, and tested with the latest  omega drivers, as well as downloading drivers direct form msi site. all failed.
i pulled it out and plugged it into a garbage system that barely meets min req for the card and it booted without a problem using catalysts.
so the card is not doa.

yes i was sure to completely uninstall all previous driver versions.

that is the xt bios. apparently ppl are getting mixed results and one person i found in a diff forum had to go thru some hoops to return his card to original bios, which included putting in a pci vid card to boot the machine.
maybe you can confirm some facts for me before i flashrom mine
    1. this is the 360? cz if u flash a 350 ur done and ull be lucky to get ur card back
all indications short of pulling the heatsink off to eyeball the chip says it is true. has this card been released in 2 versions, one of which may harbor the awful secret of a 350 ?
everything reports this card in my box as an xt, however, sandra 2k4 pro shows it as " msi radeon 9800 pro plus " and NOT the XT, which sytem info shows it as, as well as device manger.
    2. the bios i provided the link for is a morrien (sp.,? going from memory here) which is supplied to the msi cards sold as XT's in germany which are built on the 360. this is what led modders to believe they could flashrom the chip. true or false?
    3. this one doesnt demand an answer, just simply stating that i have found just as many bad results in my search as i have found good results. i can attribute some of the failures to ignorance and inexperience, just as i can attribute some of the success stories to blind luck ( ppl just following instructions in random forums without a clue as to what its going to do  )
one fact remains, the people who had success have experienced great success. that is enough for me to rip the heatsink off and confirm the 360 lies beneath before i flash anything.

  • [VIA] MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU and a MSI FX5900XT 128MB DDR Video Card

Does any body out there know if a MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU and a MSI FX5900XT 128MB DDR Video Card will work well together?

like the grayone say, is true. for more ensure, try and search the graphic cards support list for your board at MSI (Sorry cause i don,t no is  where the site located)
in my opinion, most is compability for your card, when is a AGP slot.
Except the new one like the AGP slot, call AGR( Accelaration Graphic Riser slot) that really need to find a compatibility graphic cards.....

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

    Hi,
i have a LANPARTY UT nF3 250Gb mobo and a Atlhon 64 1800+ 512ddr and a MSI FX5500 128Mb with Windows XP SP2, and i'm having too much cpu usage(between 70/100%)..the strange part of this is that i'm having this huge cpu usage when system is at desktop without anything runing (programs..games..).. and no.. its no virus/adware/spyware.. because i've format my system and only install windows and mobo drivers(nf3 drivers) and ofcourse nvidia Display drivers nothing else..
if anyone could help me i appreciate because this slows down my computer a little bit.. :S

its weird..because in task manager in processes separator, there is no process using too much cpu, but in performance separator it shows CPU between 70/100% of usage.. i will try to post a screenshot soon as i can to show to you..
btw.. could this be solved or its my graphic card damaged?

  • MSI 6800 128mb - stutter every 20 secs or so

    Hi,
I have recently bought the MSI 6800 128mb card. Ther card runs well except for one thing. Every so often there will be a freeze/stutter in gameplay for a split second.
I cannot seem to resolve this issue. The game play is smooth and graphics are fantastic except for this odd stutter.
I have been looking into this and have read many suggestions on how to fix it.
Here is what I have tried:
    Latest drivers (61.77)
Dropping hardware acceleration in Windows by one or two notches (tried both)
Changing the Blitting settings using RivaTuner
    Upping the 2d Clock
Underclocking and overclocking both 2d and 3d clocks
    Disabling/Enabling fastwrites
    Adding more RAM
I was going to flash the bios with that from the nVidia website but it appears to be the same version so I figure this would be pointless.
It was also suggested that the problem may be that there is not enough power to the card, but I have a 500w power supply and its on its own rail with nothing else connected to it.
If anyone has any advice or answers please let me know
    Thanks

    Hello there
I have exactly the same problem!   Msi bios sucks!
so u should consider flashing a new bios into your card
    Get the right bios here:

Hi Zeon, yeah the bios revision, and programs to flash it are on this site.
    http://www.mvktech.net/download.php?list.27
and Dr Dos from this site.
    http://www.bootdisk.com
To do this you need to create a boot disk.......Heres what i did.
    1. Create Boot disk using DR Dos
    2. Copy the bios revision and the Nvflash program onto the same floppy disk.
    3. Backup original bios by typing A:\ nvflash -b backup.rom, then press ENTER.
    4. To Flash the bios....type A:\nvflash -5 -6 Biosfilename.rom, the press ENTER.
Very easy and simple to do.
I remind anyone who will try this that its at your own risk.
i havent tried this yet because i need a damn Floopy Disk but i think that's the only way to fix these problems.
Stay cool and thanks to all those who made these guides for us  :P
