Radeon only boots with video sometimes

Alright, I'm having a strange problem. About half the time when I start my system, the radeon driver loads properly, kms kicks in, the terminal resolution changes and everything works peachy.
The other half of the time, right when the driver is loaded and the resolution is supposed to change, my monitor just starts as if it has a signal but the screen stays dark. The system boots up completely fine otherwise and I can ssh in to use it. Any ideas why I would have video one boot but not the next? I can't find any difference between them.
This is a fully up to date freshly installed system. I've included the journal logs for a successful boot and a no video boot below:
Good boot:
Allowing runtime journal files to grow to 177.8M.

  • Macbook pro only boot with R key

    I have a problem with a macbook pro .
I have snow leopard and after running onyx my computer only boot with the R key pressed , I have tried option-command-PR , reset SMC , repair permissions without success .
I have an external apple led cinema but with or without the error continues .
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

Why did you try booting with the R key pressed? From what I recall that key simply resets the screen settings, and shouldn't have anything to do with your system starting or not. I would remove it from the external display until we can get this resolved.
I'm wondering if it has something to do with your NVRAM. Try booting with this key sequence cmd-opt-n-v.

  • ESXi6.0 Host, WIndows 7, only boots with 1GB RAM

    Hi gang,
I converted a physical Win7 machine for use on my ESXi 6.0 sever and it created the machine just fine.  I added a second disk to the server and moved the VM files to that disk, removed it from the inventory, and then added it back.  The VM was originally configured to use 4GB RAM.  However, when I power on the machine, the console window stays black and Windows never boots.  With some trial and error, the only way I was able to get the VM to power on and boot was if I changed its settings to only use 1GB RAM.  There is 8GB RAM total in the ESXi host and the other VMs aren't using much, so there is plenty freely available.  However it simply won't boot with more than 1GB configured.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

Well I deleted the VM and re-created it, and reloaded Windows and all my software, works fine now.
    Thanks for all the help.

  • Server only booting with lts

Just curious if anyone has seen this:
Booting with 3.5.4, dual nehalem xeon using asus z8na-d6 board.
/usr is on lvm2, have usr hook there, lvmwait as a boot arg (lvm is reported as active though)...
OS drive is a 1TB samsung.
    During boot it hits:
    mounting '/dev/sda' as real root
and then no more messages.  hitting ctrl-alt-delete does get it to reboot.
I forceably killed it once, rebooted and watched fsck stuff roll by.  During /usr fsck it just "froze" and wouldn't continue on.
    it boots fine using linux-lts.
this is running some trashy onboard xgi video, never started 'x' on it.  Could that be part of the fun?
I have a core2quad dual xeon i use for my desktop, similarly configured with nvidia graphics, no problems with it.

  • Hp m8430f won't boot with video card

I have a HP Pavilion Media Center m8430f Desktop PC.
One day on startup my acer flat screen wont show bios or anything.
If I remove the 8500 gt and use integrated graphics, it works fine with my old crt monitor and I’m actually using it to write this.
If I insert the 8500 gt, however, my lcd monitor gets no signal and I hear no OS sounds indicating that windows is loading up or anything even though the video card works in another computer and I've replaced the motherboard.
I've tried pretty much everything I can think of, and I'd really appreciate it if you guys could give me some ideas on what to try next.
    IPIBL-LB (Benicia) motherboard
    Intell core 2 quad Q6600 2.4 GHz
    nvidia ge force 8500 gt
    Integrated graphics intell gma 3100
    tv tuner card
    Modem card
    4 Gig DDR2 ram
    Steps I've taken
Video card and monitor tested and work in another PC
    Reset bios with jumper
Removed ram tried one at time .
Removed all cards and tied that.
    Replaced power supply
    Tried all above again.
    Updated bios
Replaced motherboard and put it all back together

The 500w is definitely sufficient and this is such an odd issue. It doesn't make since. We've tested parts in other machines and even replaced parts yet the same problem holds true.
With the video card inserted does the computer boot at all? Do you hear fans turn on lights, anything or is it just dead?
I'm wondering if we should try to get the computer down to as basic as we need it.
    1 stick of RAM,
    video card
    processor
Disconnect hard drive, CD ROM. and see if it boots with just the basics plugged in.
After that I'll admit that I'd be throwing darts in testing things to see if there is something that sticks. Something like trying something else in the PCI slot besides a video card to see if it stops the system from booting.

  • ZH77A-G43 Will only boot with 2 sticks

Trying to build a linux backup server, but cannot get to even boot with 2 sticks.
System powers up, fans spin. After about 10 seconds power-cycles and then continues
    to repeat in a loop.
Have read through various similar posts.
So far have tested all sticks test fine when tested individually with memtest86
Have removed, inspected CPU and mobo for bent pins; none visible to the naked eye.
Is there anything I am missing to try and resolve this issue?

Ok I can get it to go as far as 2 sticks; not in the expected slots either. Board identifies these as slot 1 and 2.
In OC genie it shows two. The sticks are labeled CL 9 9 9 24.

  • Mid 2007 24" imac only boots without video card installed

, do i need a new one or is it something else?
one day it decided to not boot. No chime, black screen. Can hear fans and cd/dvd spin.  Diag. leds 1,2&3 lit 4 is not.  Did some googling, and eventually found out that if i take the MMX ATI 2600HD video card out of the computer and turn it on, it boots up fine (still no chime however) and i am able to use screen sharing from my other mac to access it. Everything looks and works as normal, only there is no screen of its own. the keyboard wors fine, mouse, cd/dvd drive etc.  I have already purchased and installed a new PSU at $120 which did not fix a thing, so i am hesitant to just assume that buying a new video card will solve my problem. so my first question is, will buying and installing a new video card fix it? and if so can i purchase an upgraded video card other than the stock ATI 2600HD? i have heard that there is an NVIDIA card that is compatible a GeForce 8800 GS 512MB i believe. and third, if it is compatible, will it work with the Heatsink for the ATI 2600HD or do i need to buy that as well??
I am trying to avoid the BS canned answer that apple loves to give as a solution, which is replace the logic Board. At nearly $1,000 I'll spend my time and effort it may take to actually find the reason it broke and attempt to fix it rather than just replace the whole thing with a new one. any suggestions or advice graetly appreciated.

so, a strange development on my imac problem. I have ordered a new video card for it, a 2600hd pro. today out of curiosity i punched the numbers i could find from the card that was in there and it comes up as a ati 2400xt card. that card was the one for the 20" model not my 24". whats up with that? does that mean that when my new 2600hd pro gets here it will not work in my system? I sure hope so or apple has some splaining to do!

  • Mac Pro only booting with option key down

I have an 8-core mac pro that is great except for some odd booting issues. I have 3 internal drives, one with OSX 10.4.9 on it, the other with just files and the last with windows XP. I also, at times, have USB drives (or an iPod) plugged into the mac. When I restart, even if I have selected a boot volume in the startup settings, the machine will just go black. Sometimes it will play the startup chime multiple times, other times only once or not at all. The only way to get it to boot up into osx or windows is to hold down options. Even then, it only seems to work if I unplug all external drives from the machine. Any ideas whats going on or how I might fix this?
    Thanks!

  • Powermac g5 2.5 dual won't boot with video card

    Hi all,
So the other day I came home to find my powermac g5 frozen with the fans going crazy. After a hard reset the machine would no longer boot any further than the grey apple (kernel) stage. After pulling the video card the machine would boot up and I could log in using remote desktop from my laptop.
The machine ran that way for a couple of days until I got a new video card. When I put the new video card in the machine would not boot again.(The new card is exactly the same one as the old one)(ATI Radeon X800 XT mac edition).
After pulling the card the machine still wouldn't boot (exact same behavior as with the card) until I let it sit unplugged for 20 minutes or so. Also when it's not booting I can see that a little red light comes on on the logic board behind the cpu's.
Anyways I'm thinking it may be a power supply issue but if any experts wanna help me out with some advice I'd be very grateful.
    Thanks in advance,
    Cory

    Hi Cory,
See if it will Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permission.

  • PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5 - Only Boots with Side Cover and Fan Guard OFF!!

I have the strangest problem with my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.5.  This has been my Pro Tools rig forEVER.
At some point early last year, my Mac wouldn't boot.  It would not see the hard drive, and would show that dreaded alternating icon in the middle of the screen indicating as much.  I tried resetting, tried power off/on, tried resetting PRAM.  Nothing.  I took the cover off, and fan guard off to get at the hard drive.  Verified the data and power cable were seated in hard drive.  Cover still off, I booted up the system.  Voila!!!  Booted right up like nothing was ever wrong.  I put the cover back on, and went about my business, passing it off as a one-off power glitch (the power in my house ***** rocks).  Next time I rebooted the Mac, the exact same thing happened.
I can repeat this at will.  If I leave the cover on, the system will not ever, ever boot.  The minute I take the cover and fan guard off, causing the fans to spin at max speed when turned on, the system boots without issue.  So, I reset PRAM and PMU.  I even tried replacing that green/white cylindrical battery on the motherboard.  Reseated power/data cable on hard drive.  ****, I even tried a different hard drive and memory (explained below).  No change.
Since then, I have relegated this system to the emergency backup system, and procured Dual 2.7 G5 PowerMac.  I transferred the pro tools cards, hard drive (without formatting it) and memory (8 GB) to this new 2.7, and have not had a single, solitary issue with it.  So, I know it's not the hard drive, memory, OS install, or Pro Tools cards.
What in the name of the Apple Gods could be causing this issue?  Any ideas at all?

    Hi Chris,
Good info & work so far, but indeed strange, only thing I can think of is something to do with that little switch for the fan cover... near the bottom as I recall, but it may be some kind of short in it's circuit.

  • Removed bootcamp now can only boot with option

I recently removed my windows xp on a bootcamp partition....now when I reboot the imac, I get a message that says there is no bootable drive....use installation discs....
If I power up with my remote's menu button held, it starts like bootcamp used too but only shows the mac HD....and it boots fine in that case.....I think some remnant of the original bootcamp wasn't removed....How can I fully remove it?

Open the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences and select the Mac OS X system.

  • MAC MINI BOOTS WITH VIDEO CORRUPTION (scrambled pixelated screen) even after restore and ram change, OK IN "SAFE MODE"

Would there be a MACOS Start-up item causing this considering it's OK with a "shift" boot?

Hi, does this Mini have a video card, or integrated graphics?
Likely it's the quartz driver, that is disabled in Safe Mode.
See this great post by themachead on how to list the extensions in Safe Mode with System Profiler then compare to the extension folder!

  • RAM Slot Faulty? Computer Only Boots With One Module of RAM

Ok, so my Macbook Pro is out of warranty and my 100gb HDD was getting a bit tiny, so I decided to upgrade it myself.
After following directions on iFixit, the harddrive went in without a hitch. When I put it back together and boot it up, the latch/sleep light came on, hdd spun up, fans spun, CD spun however the screen refused to turn on.
So I tried resetting PMU, PRAM etc to no avail (would not accept keystrokes). Then I had a fiddle with the RAM (there is 2 512mb modules) and basically worked out that if I have either one module in the top and nothing in the bottom everything was A-OK. But if I put either one by itself in the bottom or have both together (either way around) the computer would do the same thing as before (screen would not turn on but made all other usual sounds). Does this mean the bottom RAM slot is faulty?? If so would the logic board have to then be replaced?!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
That's exactly what it sounds like that the RAM slot is bad. Unfortunately you also might have damaged it yourself in doing all the iFixit instructions. And yes a logicboard replacement would be in order if you couldn't get anything to work. As long as you have something limping along I'd save the money for the logicboard replacement, and in the future have an authorized service center do such installation while you are still under AppleCare with the proviso they promise you to document it under AppleCare that they did it and they will remove the RAM if it ever was found to be bad in the future so that you have no risk of losing your AppleCare in case an accident happened in the installation. If no authorized service center in your area will give you that sort of stipulation in writing, be sure only to buy machines build to order with the parts you need up front, and don't expect to be able to upgrade it in the future.

  • Lenovo Ideacentre K410 won't boot with video card after OS crash and refresh

I purchased a Lenovo Ideacentre K410 from Fry's some time ago. It came with Windows 8. I added a GeForceGTX650. Everything ran fine until yesterday, when the system black-screened in the middle of a Windows 8 update. The update was running from the control panel. After the black screen, I finally got the system to boot again by removing the video card. Even then it said the OS was messed up and offered to refresh it. I allowed it to refresh the OS. Now Windows 8 boots, but not if I put the video card back in. Thanks!

    Hi macaria,
    Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
It might be that the Video Card is Bad that caused the Crash,
The system prompt you for a repair since it was not turned OFF properly when the computer Crashed.
Have the GPU Card tested on another computer or try a different GPU on your system.

  • [SOLVED] Can only boot with error in fstab

    Hey there!
During boot I noticed a message, that /dev/sda4 (my /home-partition) gets passed a wrong option.
BUT when the system finished booting, everything works very well!
    checking my fstab got me
    /dev/sda4 /home ext4 default,noatime 0 2
which I corrected (adding the "s").
    my new fstab:
    # <file system>        <dir>         <type>    <options>          <dump> <pass>
    none                   /dev/pts      devpts    defaults            0      0
    none                   /dev/shm      tmpfs     defaults            0      0
    #/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
    #/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
    /dev/sda1 /boot ext2 defaults 0 1
    /dev/sda2 swap swap defaults 0 0
    /dev/sda3 / ext4 defaults,noatime 0 1
    /dev/sda4 /home ext4 defaults,noatime 0 2
resulting in the problem, that "/home" isn't accessible and "/" is mounted as new home... (and login with slim doesn't work at all)
    any ideas?
    thanks for your answers!

Man, my fstab seems to be really crappy I think now..
(gonna change the order immediately )
    more information:
when I log in with tty1 as normal user, it says
No directory, logging in with HOME=/
    "mount /home"
    gives me:
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda4 is already mounted on /home
    mount failed
    however, "ls /home"
gives me just the folder "lost & found" instead of my user-folder
