RADEON X1650 vs nvidia GT8500. Which one to buy?

Hi,
Im planning to build a new computer. I found these two cards, but im not sure which one is better to buy. I mean, will ati open source drivers work on x1650? And how about nvidia, is its closed source driver good? The reason why i cant choose, is that i dont know which ones driver will work better. I currently have computer with radeon 9600 and ati open source driver works with no problems, but maybe nvidia drivers will work even better than ati's?
I dont play games at all, so the performance difference is not very important, i just need compiz or kwin eyecandy which would work with no lag. Also how about kde4 performance with nvidia? Mine radeon 9600 works very fast with kde4, and i saw some people who have problems with nvidia and slow kde4.
Also, i chose motherboard foxconn Foxconn A690GM2MA-RS2H and amd athlon 64 x2 6000+. Will this motherboard work with this cpu and will it be fully compatible with linux?
Thank you
EDIT: fixed the motherboard type

For now, just go with Nvidia. You won't regret it.
I've just recently switched to Nvidia from an ATI card (an X700), and after almost 2 years of suffering with poor quality of the ATI driver and waiting for the ATI open/close source driver to mature, it's really an eye opener. The quality of Nvidia driver is very, very good (especially compared to that of ATI). In short, the Nvidia card just work (and work very well) with Linux and provides additional features such as twinview or VDPAU, while with ATI you only get a "mostly" working driver (no/poor 3D support, for example), which is really sad when you see your ATI card that can play Half Life 2 on Windows just fine is struggling hard just to render Nexuiz/Google Earth because of poor driver support.
Sure, the ATI open source driver is rapidly improving, but to be honest, it wasn't quite ready yet to justify buying an ATI card right now. Just look at the news item on the problem with new kernel and ATI KMS. If I were you, I would just go with the card that have a working driver right now, instead of buying a card that required me to wait for a driver to mature in order to use full performance of the card.

    Bryan,
You can download both at the same time.
But you may wish to start off with one and use it full time, then download the other later, so you get the maximum possible time with both.
If you have trouble getting the free trial on the Adobe site, you may try here or here:

    The answer is rather critical.
I saw many gave their comments and or suggessions.
I thank BABDI first of all to clear the fact that N70 is the stablest-its sad but true
[are y still angry with me?].
I also give a 5 out of 10 to PETRIB for explaining his weakness in nicer screen display.
Sorry Mr. LOL [Roberth], I cannot agree with y much regarding this situation.
Mr fatc, thank y too for yr informative yet outdated info [dont mind].
First of all this guy mentioned:which one to buy:N91 or N73?
Secondly he expressed that he wants less problem with good features.
But lol, he should also mention that what type of mobile user he is: does he need all in one or specifically music becoz N73 has all-in-all [except wi-fi] but N91 is basically on music.
My answer is N91-1 [WiFi] or N91 8 GIG.
    Because:
1.N91 now is released with 2.10.013 which is much trouble free and N91 8 GIG is with 3.00.xxx which is not bad.
2.It has better than IPOD sound with very Good FM Radio
3.its size is either 4 gig or 8 gig.
4.I know y ve heard about the HDD factors but if y carefully maintain the 19 tips from ohgizmodos and tips and guides from support section of this website I CAN BET Y FEEL LESS TROUBLE AND ENJOY GOOD FEATURES.
But if yr focus is only on camera [so called 3 MPix] and nicer screen with BUNCH OF TALENT BUGS y may go for N73 or N73 ME-no one will restrict you.

  • Which one to buy: Audigy 2 ZS or Audig

I'd like to buy quality sound card, but I'm confused. I don't know which one will be suitable for my needs. I need it for music (85%, listening, not production)) and gaming (5%). I don't want to buy X-FI, because it doesn't work on Linux (it's my main platform).
    Which one to buy?

lol, should have phrased that question better. Audigy 4 as its newer, better and more powerfull than audigy2 zs. also audigy 4 has seperate jacks for headphones line in and out. i rip vinyl to mp3, so need seperate line in/out. that is why i never bought an x-fi card, has stupid 3 way jack going on there.

  • I am about to buy my first ipad but dont know which one to buy.  I will use it for email, browsing, watching films etc -Please help me!

I am about to buy my first ipad but don't know which one to choose and all the information baffles me!!  I will use it for email, browsing, watching films, general things like that.  Please help?

I'm sure others will disagree, but I'm all about saving $.  I would start by looking online at the Apple store for refurbished devices.  I would also get MORE memory than yout think you will ever need.  The    stuff we have seems always to expand to fill the space available.  I wouldn't get one with cellular capability unless you really, really need it...

  • HELP WANTED: I wanna buy an iPad or Android Tablet, but IDK which one to buy...

So I am expecting my tax refund in a week or 2 & I wanna buy an Android Tablet, but I am kinda computer/tablet stupid & I have no clue which one to pick...  Specific things I want in an Android Tablet include the following:  Android 2.3 or newer, touch screen, Micro SD card slot & good battery life are all my must haves!!!  Additionally, if possible, I would prefer a White Android Tablet over a Black Android Tablet!!!  I am a T-Mobile employee, I work @ their customer service center/inbound call center in Portland, Oregon.  My expertise is cell phone activations, new customer activations/sales/upgrades, tech support & billing.  I am very unknowledgeable when it comes to the iPad & Android Tablets.  If anyone can help, it would be greatly appreciated!!!  So far I've narrowed down my tablet selection to the Sony Tablet S, Asus Transformer Prime, iPad 2 & Asus Slider...  Suggestions???  A little insight help please!!!  Thanks so much:-)

Keyboard is not hugely important, however it would be nice, I can type very well on a tablet, so keyboard is not a must...  Micro SD card & Android 2.3 or higher is an absolutle must!!!  Cameras of at least 5MP would be nice as well.  I've done a little research since I posted this & iPad 2 is officially off my list.  Asus Slider, Sony Tablet S & Asus Transformer Prime are what I'm looking at as of now.  As far as screen goes, I want a larger screen if possible.  Flash websites I also want access to.  When it comes to sound, I listen to alot of music, I am in my 20's so I'm kinda a partier & I like loud music, so something with a high level of audio & vidoe sound would be great!!!  I personally own an Android cell phone, the HTC Sensation with T-Mobile, I have had Android cell phones since the very first day the HTC G1 phone came out, the HTC G1 was the very first Android phone ever put out by any cell phone carrier.  I absolutely do love Android so very much!!!  Based off of all of this, what do you recommend or suggest???

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm partial to Samsung's Galaxy Tab 10.1 - Although it is getting a bit dated at this point.  It's very well built, and is one of the thinnest and lightest of the Honeycomb tablets.  It does not have a MicroSD slot, but there's a USB host adapter available for $20 - I just copy media from a thumb drive using that when I need to.
The Toshiba Thrive is way too thick and heavy.
The Asus Transformer Prime seems to have a lot of quality control issues, in addition to availability issues.  I think that Asus screwed up when they gave it a metal body - it has had a severe negative impact on wifi and GPS performance.  If you want a quad-core Tegra3-based tablet - wait for someone else to release one.
Nowadays you actually have quite a few choices - 10.1" tablets were the standard for Android tablets, but some people are willing to sacrifice usability a little in order for the improved portability of a 7" tablet, or Samsung's Galaxy Tab 8.9, which is in between the 7" and 10.1" tablets in size.

  • I have no idea which one to buy-help.

I have an imac OSX and want to buy photoshop, I have no idea which one.
I do websites, collages for ads and just play around.
I am by no means a pro, but need a program that does what I need.
Before I got a mac, I used PAINT SHOP PRO on my windows and it did what I need.
    PLEASE help me.

Actually, all these versions of photoshop will run on OSX. Of course you have to buy the MAC version of photoshop WITH a serial number. If you are not sure, best to make sure you buy CS4 from a reputable source -
    Just one - http://www.amazon.com/Adobe-65014293-Photoshop-CS4-Mac/dp/B001EUIVZG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s= software&qid=1247617710&sr=8-1
You will get a unique serial number, and in theory that will give you certain support (although Adobes support in the US isn't getting very good feedback on this forum these days - so make sure you cover yourself) This license will allow you to upgrade to future versions, if you ever want -  at a cheaper price.
but then he told me it would not work with OSX
Ok - good job you didn't go for that one. Because its not true that CS3 will not run on OSX. He may have mean't a VERY old version (maybe Photoshop version 3?) going back more than 8 years, only those old mac versions will not run on OSX.
What version of OSX are you running, 10.5 Leopard?

If you have full frame lenses, particularly the 24-105, mostly shoot landscapes and don't intend on buying new lenses I'd say get the 6D.
The 70D is a nice camera, I have one, but without something wider you're not going to have the tools you need for landscapes.

  • Help! I can't decide which one to buy(zen xtra or zen tou

    Hello everyone,
I use to have an zen nx so i'm familiar with the nomads. I'm want to buy a new one but can't decide on which one. Should get a 30gb zen xtra or a 20gb zen touch. The hardri've capacity is not a big deal to me, as a 20gb mp3 player is good for me. I just want to know how they function differently.
    thanks

The Xtra has slightly more in the way of features within the firmware and the larger hard disk.
The Touch has a much greater battery life and is smaller.
Best to decide on what's important to you.

  • Which one to buy: iMac 2,93 GHz or 3,06 GHz ???

    Hello All
I really need your help. I am about to venture into the world of Apple by buying an iMac.
I am looking at the 2,93 GHz and the 3,06 GHz model. I will upgrade the graphic card to the ATI Radeon HD 4850 512 MB in either computer. Also the keyboard and mouse will be wireless. The only difference between the two is the HDD which is 640 GB vs. 1000 GB and the processor speed. The price difference is about 1.800 DKK or 240 EURO. 700 DKK/93 EURO for the HDD and 1.100 DKK / 147 EURO for the processor.
I plan to use the computer primarily for photo editing, internet, mail, office and secondarily some computergame via Windows/bootcamp. I have an Xbox 360 that I primarily uses for games. I plan to have 2 Mac/boot partitions, a file/photo partition and 2 Windows partitions for safety. Further I plan to buy an external HDD for backup.
Currently I have 100 GB of photos/music. Each vecation brings home 10 GB of new photos. A Windows partition usually requires about 50 GB when games are installed. Since one Windows partition is only for safety this only have to be around 5 GB. I currently uses Windows XP.
I have accepted the price of the 2,93 GHz model including upgrades and Applecare, but feel that the remaining 1.800 DKK / 240 EURO streaches the budget. Is the 3,06 GHZ / 1.000 GB HDD wort the extra money?
    Can anyone please help me?

If the graphics card is going to be the same, I think the performance difference will be marginal at best. As for the hard drive, it would be more cost effective to get the 640GB hard drive internally and apply the savings to buying more (or larger) external storage. Now, if you needed to make the Windows partition 200GB, then the larger internal drive might make sense. But since it's only 50GB plus another 5GB, the 640GB drive is probably fine.
    I plan to have 2 Mac/boot partitions, a file/photo partition
I suggest you only have one Mac partition. Extra partitions just causes less efficient use of free space. If you want a second bootable Mac volume, you can set that up on the external drive. Macs tend to use external drives more effectively than Windows. If you get an external drive with the FireWire 800 interface, the connection will be very fast, and it will serve as a second bootable Mac volume on a separate hard drive. That will allow you to boot the iMac, even if the internal drive fails or becomes corrupted. You can boot from the external drive to attempt repair and data recover.
Note: You can boot Intel Macs from a USB 2.0 drive. But it will not be as fast as FireWire 800.
