Radeon X800 Pro 256MB

Should I be wary of updating to this?

It's supposed to be a fine card otherwise, and ATI have been diligent in releasing new drivers on a monthly basis.

  • G5, Dell 30 inch monitor, Radeon Mac9600 PRO 256MB

When I ordered this monitor, I read that my computer should have a dual-link DVI-D compatible graphics card. I had a dual-link DVI card, but soon found that the one I had didn't support the higher resolution of the 30 inch monitor. Apparently, the only card that does work with the bus structure on my G5, (which is AGP8X), is the recently discontinued Radeon Mac9600 PRO 256MB.
Since I couldn't find one that was actually in stock from the likes of CDW, I tracked one down on eBay. What is unfortunate is that while it does indeed support this resolution, there is a lot of crazy pink artifacting (for lack of a better description) that is going on all over the screen. There are also static-like lines that zip around occasionally. I am assuming that this has something to do with the card (I have now tried 2 different 9600 cards) as the problem was not present when driving the monitor with a lower resolution-supporting card.
Any ideas how to remedy this other than buying a new computer that supports the newer PCI-E cards that might alleviate the problem?
I am also wondering if I end up having to selling this monitor because the problem is unsolvable and I purchase the Dell SP2309W, 23inch, will I have the same problem because of my G5's "ancient" bus structure..?
As a side note, I have two Apple 23 inch cinema displays, both of which have gone pink on me, so I am not inclined to purchase an Apple display again.
In advance, I really, really appreciated the assistance. When did this all get so darned complicated?

    Hi Steve,
Thanks so much for the response.
I originally had a Radeon 9600 128MB card which did not support the higher resolution on the Dell 30". However, when the 30" was running from the 9600 128MB until I could get the newer card, I did not have this pink artifacting problem, so that leads me to believe that it is not the cable. However, my husband is bringing one home tonight to try anyway.
I have tried two Radeon Mac9600 Pro 256 MB cards, thinking the first might be defective, and still have the same problem. So, unless both cards are defective, it is something else. I have searched around online trying to find an answer, but all I seem to find are folks mentioning the same problem (with a variety of cards & monitors), but nobody seems to offer an answer that actually solves it.
I appreciate the input regarding the smaller monitor. I thought that might be the case, but at this point, I take nothing for granted. This just all seems overly complicated
As for the other cards (nVidia 6800, and ATi's X800), I cannot seem to find one of either that is actually available for purchase - and AGP, and MAC OS X, and 256 MB, and Dual link DVI. What I have heard is that the AGP bus structure is "ancient" and that nobody is actually manufacturing these cards any longer.
The other issue that comes to mind, is that if I find one of the above cards (I think I found one on Amazon - used for $499) I could get it, and find I still have the same issue. Refer to my comment regarding other posters who seem to have the same issue with a variety of cards/monitors. I just thought that somebody, somewhere had to have encountered this and knew how to fix it or at least what it might be.

  • What would you replace an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB) with?

    Hi,
I started a thread before asking whether I could replace a 256MB card with a 128MB card, even though the interface was a different shape.
But, as I know so little about Macs and graphics card, it seems wiser to ask
What would you replace an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro (256MB) with?
The computer is user for photo editing and normal internet/email use.  The photo editing is done on Adobe Photoshop for professional treatment of photographs.
    The computer is a Power Mac G5 (1.6GHz) and budge is £80 / $120.
    Thanks in advance, Franc.

    Hi-
Please check my recommendations in your other thread.
Better options for the 9800 Pro are the Radeon 9800 XT, Geforce 6800 GT, Geforce 6800 Ultra, or if one has the money or finds a good deal, a Radeon X800 XT.
For your budget and uses, the Geforce cards are a performance value buy.
BTW, I have owned all of the cards, used all of the cards, and tested all of the cards.

  • ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac

We want to be able to use our 30" cinema display from the G4 and was advised in a previous discussion to buy the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB 8x Dual (DVI/DVI) (AGP) Video Card for PC/Mac. It doesn't seem to be available anywhere. Does anybody know of an alternate video card that's currently available that will get us there? (We had the display running from a G5 that quit / logic board failure).
    Many thanks,
    Philip

The Nvidia 7800GS is a flashed card, runs a 30" with ease.
BruinMacs on Ebay is a great place to get one, you support the guy who wrote the original ROM for these.
He doesn't seem to have any for sale right now, but if you email him, maybe he will list one.
There are also flashed X800s that work on your MDD and can run a 30". They are pricey but will offer dual DVI while the 7800GS is single DVI with VGA for second display.
There are also flashed 6600GT AGP cards which will work, but harder to find.
Any of the above 3 will run circles around a 9600.

  • Getting the GPU temp on a Radeon Card, and is a Radeon X850 PRO 256MB PC card flashable for use in Mac G5?

I decided to post this as a new topic since it really didn't belong on the tail end of my X800 XT thread of woe...
Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?  I have done quite a bit of looking online and have come up with nothing. Strange, since this is usually a concern for all computer owners..  I don't even care if it's unstable, beta, hack city.
The second part of this question is:  I have a PC AGP video card "Radeon X850 PRO 256MB", and I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
The card looks a lot like the X800 XT, except for the chip on the underside of the card that says "ATI Rage Theater" on it.
Here is a link to a pic of the underside of the card that I found on PhotoBucket:
    http://media.photobucket.com/image/recent/dualamdmp/DSCF6296.jpg
    Here is the top side:
    http://s1238.photobucket.com/albums/ff489/dualamdmp/?action=view&current=DSCF629 2.jpg
In case my efforts completely strike out getting a video card with an ADC port (basically the X800 XT or X850 XT), I am starting to look for a reasonably priced DVI to ADC converter.
    Thanks!

Is there any program that can get the GPU temp of a Radeon video card on a Mac?
    No.
Radeon X850 PRO 256MB...I wanted to know if it is flashable to use in a Powermac G5.
Possibly. BUT, it won't output digital, which is what you need to use a DVI to ADC adapter.
All flashed Radeon X800/X850 will only output analog.
A flashed FireGL X3 , using a Mac Radeon X800XT ROM will output both ports digital, and one of those is also dual link DVI (in case one wants a 30" Cinema Display).
That's the only flashed X800 that outputs digital.
If you're going the adapter route, consider an OEM or a flashed Geforce 6800 GT or Ultra.
The Ultra actually out performs the X800XT in some areas, with the GT not far behind.
A flashed Geforce 6800 GT can be a real performance value, often times a bargain.

  • Can I replace an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION with Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5

    Hi,
I am trying to help a friend whose graphics card has bust.
The old one was an ATI RADEON 9800 PRO-(256MB)-MAC EDITION.
I've been looking on ebay and it seems a lot cheaper to get a Mac ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb Video Card For G4/G5.
Can I just swap them over?  The connectors are not identical according to the photographs.
    Thanks.

I'd like to thank everyone for all the really useful information in this thread. It helped me solve a similar problem, which I'll describe here briefly in case it helps someone else.
I have a 2004/5 dual 2 Ghz PowerPC G5 and an Apple Cinema HD display linked, as I later found out, with the now defunct ADC connector. The display suddenly started to look like that scene in The Matrix, when code falls like rain down the screen, and I worked out I needed to replace my Radeon 9800 pro video card (I discovered the board was blue when I removed a thick layer of dust).
I took japamac's excellent advice and bought a Geforce 6800 Ultra from the linked eBay seller in Hong Kong, who delivered it extremely quickly, along with the cables to plug it into the DVD drive power source and a CD with installation instructions. It was only then that I realised the card had two DVI connectors and my display needed ADC (I hadn't understood the difference).
eBay came to the rescue again with a seller who had a secondhand DVI to ADC adapter, which Apple produced  when it phased out ADC about six years ago but no longer sells. It has its own power supply and looks like a large version of the Mac laptop power cables - and has added signifcantly to the pile of spaghetti under my desk.
Installing the Geforce 6800 Ultra is fiddly, and a bit scary if you're not used to delving into the insides of a Mac, but the instructions were clear and illustrated with useful photos. The video cable has four connectors. Two fit into the end of the card, the other two (linked in a Y shape) form a bridge between the DVD/superdrive and its power cable. You have to remove the DVD drive, unplug it, and then plug one of the two Y video card connectors into the DVD power cable and the other into the DVD drive itself. Then you replace the DVD drive, plug the two remaining cable connectors to the video card and ease it into the old card's AGP slot.
Finally, with the G5 reassembled, plug the adapter's DVI connection into the back of the card, plug the Cinema Display ADC cable into the adapter block, plug the adapter's USB cable into the G5 (this enables the the USB ports on the back of the display to work), and power up.
At the time of writing, the display has been up and running for a couple of hours and all seems fine.
Thanks again everyone for all your help and advice. If it wasn't for communities like this, it would be virtually impossible to solve problems with old but still serviceable Macs.

  • ATI radeon 9800 pro (256MB)-- Apple 23" HD

ive had this graphics card for a good couple of months, about 6 or so to be exact, a card given to me by a friend who just didnt need it anymore, upgraded to something or other.
now, the issue is that two days ago, it just stopped working. i tried to turn on my comp and it turned on as usual, but the monitor did not. i thought it was the adc to dvi adapter that i bought to use this type of graphics card for such a screen. but it reconnected everything and still nothing. i then finally got my old graphics card, yes i still had it =D, and i tried turning it on with the adapter still connected, simply swapped cards, and the monitor worked. since then ive tried reconnecting because i wanted to make sure the wires are ok but no luck with the radeon 9800 pro (256MB). anyone have any clues what i can do? it doesnt have warranty due to it being somewhat old, friend had it for a while.
annyone have different ways to connect this card? maybe i can try a different method? is there a place i can take this card, to see if it is indeed something wrong with the card and not something with my computer itself acting weird to it? oh and btw i have a powermac G4 (MDD) 1 gig or ram.

    Hi,
The card symptoms do indeed sound like it's malfunctioning. If re-seating the card doesn't help, the aux. power is plugged in and the fan is running - that's about it.
Malcolm is right (as usual) about that card only being available for less than 6 months. In addition, it has a 3-year limited warranty from ATI. If it is the 128MB model, it still may be under warranty. I would persue that angle, for sure. ATI info
BTW, what G4 are you running? That would help us in answering further questions.

  • Radeon 9800 pro 256mb hanging on blue screen

I'm deep in the waters of frustration right now, and am hoping someone here might have the answer.
About 3 months ago I was looking for a video card for me to run motion. I saw the 9800 mac special edition with 128mb video ram had rave reviews. At that time ATI was not making them. So I turned to eBay...
I purchased a card that was advertised as a Mac 9800 pro special editing 128mb. I later found out it was a flashed pc card. The ebay seller told me the card worked fine on all his mac's that he tested it on.
The problem I was having was the machine boots up, I see the grey screen with the Apple logo and spinning wheel. I see the blue screen where normally I see the login progress bar loading the OS. But with this card I only see the blue screen. I hear the hard drive churning, so I am assuming it is still loading the OS, but I cannot see anything. I can reboot in safe mode and the video card works fine.
Well... I assumed it was the fault of the card and that it was flashed. I returned the card to the ebay seller, who sent me another one, same results with that one. I returned the card to the seller and he refunded my money.
I put the money toward the just released Radeon 9800 Pro Mac Edition 256mb card. I just got it a couple days ago and am experiencing the same problems. I have tried everything... everything I know and still can't get the card to work? Here is a list of what I have done:
    With the flashed card:
    1. Shut off computer and unplugged it. Removed OEM video card and installed ATI 9800 card. Plugged the power supply cable for the card into the computer power supply cable and hard drive.
Problem Occurs: When starting up, the grey screen comes up with the Apple on it, then the screen turns blue, where I typically would see the progress bar of the system loaded up before the user login screen. I only see a blue screen at this point but can hear the hard drive working for about a min.
    2. Restarted the computer in safe mode.
    3. Logged in as Admin user and opened the ATI preference pane to verify it sees the card.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:
    A startup problem has occured.
Cannot connect to ATI TVOut Kernal Extension. Some features are not available.
Clicked OK and the ATI preference pane appears.
    4. Close the preference pane and reinstalled ATI Displays 4.5.6. Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs
    5. Restarted computer holding down AppleOption+PR to clear PRAM. Cleared the PRAM 4 times in a row, by allowing the chime to happen 4 times.
    Problem Occurs
    6. Shut computer down. Disconnected the DVI plug for the cinema display and connected a VGA CRT monitor. Started computer.
    Problem Occurs
    7. Shut computer down, disconnected the VGA CRT monitor. Reconnected DVI plug and restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs
    8. Started the computer in safe mode. Logged into admin account. Opened the ATI Preference pane.
When the ATI preference pane was loaded the following error message occured:
    A startup problem has occured.
Cannot connect to ATI TVOut Kernal Extension. Some features are not available.
    Closed preference pane.
Went to ATI site and downloaded:
    aug2005-radeo-universal-rom-update.dmg
    Ran the updater.
    Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs.
    9. Restarted the computer in safe mode. Changed the login preference pannel to automatically log into the administrator account. Restarted computer, waited for the blue screen, then walked away for about 2 hours with the computer on blue screen, hoping the system was loading or doing something.
    Problem Occurs.
    10. Put in the TechTools Pro CD, hoping to run some tests on the video card from the cd. When booting from the CD OS...
    Problem Occurs.
    11. Enabled Root user. Logged in as root and installed ATI Displays 4.5.6 from there. Restarted computer.
    Problem Occurs.
    12. Shut down computer and installed old video card.
    13. On an internal hard drive in the computer. Wiped the drive and formatted it. Installed 10.4.1 on the drive. booted up into the drive, installed ATI drivers, shut down computer, installed 9800 pro video card, booted up.
    Problem Occurs.
With the new 9800 for Mac ATI card with 256mb:
With original card, install drivers, repairpermissions, shut down, install new card
Set to restart in single user, give 5 min to see if ATI monitor startup item in user starteputems loads
Hooked VGA & DVIt in together, both showed blue screen
    Reset NVRAM via open firmware
    Reset cuda button
Take battery out, wait at least 10 min, re-install new battery, press cuda button
    Reinstall ATI update 4.5.6
    Reset nvram from open firmware
In ATI control panel, selected 'Force Single Display Operation'
    Change display scaling to 50%
Download latest Mac OS update from apple & reinstall
    Help?

I get dizzy just thinking about it.
I have tried installed a brand new OS, 3 different times on a different Hard Drive, still the card doesn't work.
I had one person suggest that it may be the card is not communicating with the OS Window Drawing module? (excuse my ignorance of what that is really called. I just know there is some program, possibly in the kernel, that is responsible for drawing out the OS windows.)
How can we rule out that it is a bad AGP slot?
•The slot works fine with my 9000.
•It works in safe mode with the 9800.
•I have installed a brand new OS, three different times, still doesn't work.
•I have used Apple Hardware test to test my hardware, the AGP slot didn't report any problems.
I am assuming that the AGP slot is working. Although I worry about it a bit, because by now I have swapped cards in it about 50 times in my troubleshooting.

  • No sleep after upgrading to a  radeon 9600 pro 256MB graphics card

I swapped my original radeon 9600 pro 64MB with a 9600 pro 256MB card and now my G5 dual 2.0 tower will not sleep. Should I download the 9600 pro drivers that are on the ATI support site, they only list these drivers for OSX 10.2, 10.3 and 10.4 and since I have 10.5 I am hesitant to do so. There seems to be a definite increase in graphic speed with the 256MB card and since I will be doing a lot of iphoto and imovie on this computer the upgrade would be a big help.

Can you find your model here? http://support.apple.com/specs/#powermac
Well, if you think you saw the PMU button near your RAM that would be it, just hold it down for a second or two.
Well, I'm not surprised that the PC is faster. You're running a very new OS on a very old machine. But Macs of any vintage are great, aren't they.
When you got your video card did you install the software from the disk that came with it?
One thing you might try if not sleeping is really bugging you would be to download and reapply the entire full 10.5.5 Combo Update. That has a way of correcting things when they've become corrupted.
It's pretty massive so if you're using a modem it would take quite awhile.

Edit and PS: Do you have your data backed up on a drive you can start up from? Like firewire or another internal? Here is a great app, free for it's basic job, that makes perfect copies of your system and everything on it.

  • MSI KT4V and Radeon X800 Pro...

    Hi all!
I have a question regarding my MSI KT4V MoBo. Does anybody have any experience installing a Radeon X800 card in such a MoBo?
I have read earlier that there was a size problem with the 9800 pro series.
Apparently it is so big that it touches the ram slots!?
The X800 is smaller though so it may not be a problem.
    Any help will be appreciated
    Best Regards
    Basse

I don't see how it would touch the RAM slots, it might just be a problem when you need to remove RAM that you need to remove the card first so you can pull back the RAM clips.
