Radeon x800 xt and constant freezes
I recently acquired a radeon x800 xt mac edition card to upgrade from the stock 9600xt that came in my G5. After installing it today, it worked great, except that it will unpredictably freeze up the entire computer. The video will freeze, though the spinning beach ball will still be visible and moveable, and I can hear sound continuing (though stuttering) in the background. The freeze locks up the entire computer-- I have to force a shutdown with the power button. It's happened while running World of Warcraft, but also during less intensive applications like Firefox. The frequency increased while I was trying to determine the problem to the point that the computer would only be usable for 3-4 minutes after startup. I had to swap it out for the old card just to post to this board.
I have attempted updating the ATI ROM version to the most recent update on ATI's site (August 2005). I've run the combined 10.4.8 update to make sure I hadn't accidentally reverted to old drivers. I even did a clean install of Tiger on a different hard drive, updated it to 10.4.8, and booted from it. Following bizarre outdated advice, I even tried disconnecting third-party peripherals. Nothing solved the problem.
I'm near the breaking point trying to figure out what is going wrong. My computer works completely fine with the old card in. When I swap in the x800, I get maybe 3-4 minutes of use. I've spent a long time scouring the internet for information and possible leads, and most searches turn up horribly outdated information. Can anyone help?

No-- after I posted this last night, I tried a few more things and left the case open. That was when I noticed that the fan on the video card wasn't spinning at any point during its operation.
Is this a known problem with a simple solution? I hope so. Thanks again for any help you can offer.

ATI Radeon X800 XT or ATI Radeon 9600 Pro Mac Edition for 30" display
I currently have the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro installed in my G5 2.0 DP and it is running my 30" display, but I am having some isssues when I play DVD's the pictures seems to skip every few seconds like it isn't playing fast enough, or it hesitates. I bought the ATI Radeon X800 XT and wanted to know if that would be a better card before I switch it out.
The X800 is a faster card but DVD playback doesn't put much load on the card, so the X800 probably won't help. If it skipping on more than one DVD, the DVD drive is probably having problems. Cleaning the lens ay help.

Boot Issue with New Radeon X800 XL on DVI connection
I've just bought a connect 3d radeon x800 xl and installed it in my machine. I had a radeon 9700 pro die on me 2 weeks ago and I'd reverted back to a Gainward ti4200 in the meantime - both of which I had running on exactly the same specs, the latter through the dvi connection.
However, when I turn the machine on the machine starts to go through it's POST routine and then it somehow 'loses' the display, before it finishes searching through the sata raid arrays and before I can get into the bios setup pages.
Strangely enough, the POST routine runs fine if it's connected to the bog standard vga connection.
I did think it might be the power supply considering all the other posts on the forum and although it's not the best brand in the world, it still delivers 20 amps at 12v. Anyone any ideas on how to resolve this?

CWT 450w PSU (12v: 20a, 5v: 20a, 3.3v: 28a)The DVI-I port on the 5770 and other advanced cards like it has the VGA signals directly accessible with a very simple adapter. The blade at the end of the connector and the four pins around it, plus Horizontal Sync from the top row of the grid are EXACTLY VGA, no translation required.
Converting Mini DisplayPort to VGA is one of the most complex conversions possible, and if you are having trouble with that conversion, and pushing the resolution up, I am not at all surprised.
If your DVI display is not wider that 1920 wide, I suggest you use it on a Mini DisplayPort, with a simple adapter that forces the Mini DisplayPort into "Single-Link DVI compatibility mode". As long as you do not plan to run Three displays, this solution will work with an inexpensive adapter. -
Itunes constant freezing and cannot restart
Hey, I've been having a lot of issues with my itunes for the past week or so. Every few hours or so (sometimes within like 1) my itunes will freeze completely. Once it freezes I'll close it or end the process in Task Manager and it generally shuts down. Now if the constant freezing wasn't enough of an annoyance, the itunes process also hangs in Task Manager after I've shut the program down. I have tried to end the process with taskkill, but it never works. While the process hangs it continues to consume computer memory and I cannot use itunes anymore. It just won't open anymore. The only way around this is to restart the entire computer. (Which is a huge pain!) I'd rather not have to restart my computer every time I want to listen to some music.
Some things I've tried -
Uninstalling itunes and other apple services completely; normally and by using revo uninstaller on other occassions. Then doing a fresh install.
Installing older version of itunes.
Using CCleaner to search for errors.
Checking to see if there are any firewall conflicts.
Doing a complete virus scan with Malwarebytes and Avast.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this is happening, and/or know any fixes? If so, it would be GREATLY appreciated.

I found some articles on this site about bugs in Version 7 so I deleted iTunes from my PC, reinstalled Version 6, drained down my iPod, hooked it back up, restored the OS from Version 6 and now, 3 days later, all seems to be working.
If you have a look over some of the discussions on this site you'll see that this is somewhat of a common occurrence, but Apple don't seem to be admitting it. -
Constant Freezing and skipping
I got my iPod about a month ago. I noticed that my battery life *****, and it also freezes on a daily basis. Not just daily, about 3-4 times a day. Sometimes when i turn it on for the first time that day i will have to reset it. Also when it has been off for about 1hr or so, i have to reset it to turn it on. And when I am listening to my music, it will start to skip, and then freeze. It skips alot. I havent dropped it once. The wheel also has a mind of its own. I will have it in my case and not touch it, and it will just skip to the next song or turn the volume up or down. Is there anything i can do to get it to stop doing this? or should i just take it to a store and have it replaced?

MSI KT4V and Radeon X800 Pro...
Hi all!
I have a question regarding my MSI KT4V MoBo. Does anybody have any experience installing a Radeon X800 card in such a MoBo?
I have read earlier that there was a size problem with the 9800 pro series.
Apparently it is so big that it touches the ram slots!?
The X800 is smaller though so it may not be a problem.
Any help will be appreciated

BasseI don't see how it would touch the RAM slots, it might just be a problem when you need to remove RAM that you need to remove the card first so you can pull back the RAM clips.

K8T Neo V - Radeon X800 GTO Issues
Hi, I've just upgraded my PC to an MSI K8T Neo-V MB with an Athlon 3400 and am having
issues when running it with my Radeon X800 GTO :(
Everything boots up ok, until the point Windows XP has loaded and goes to the login screen.
At this point I get a variety of lockups, screen freezes until the monitor loses 'contact' with
the gfx card. It does seem like XP is still running in the background and only the gfx card has failed
but couldn't be sure
However, I can run it with my Radeon 9800 Pro (AGP 4X only mind you, AGP 8X locks up as well
but I can live with 4x based on what I've read elsewhere in this forum )
Steps I took:
When I found the 9800 worked, I performed a complete un-install of the drivers, rebooted to
make sure they were gone, powered down, swapped cards, booted and installed drivers, rebooted
and then it hung.
I'm running it with a 450 W power supply.
It's worth mentioning that this card/power supply worked fine on my ASROCK K7s8x MB before the upgrade.Well, I'm now lighter in pocket to the tune of £70 ! I had to buy a new power supply in the end to test this one out. Whilst not my first choice, I ended up with a Jeantech Arctic 600W. Unfortunately the one I'd earmarked from PC World's website wasn't available in store (I couldn't wait for someone to deliver it to me lol ), however a quick check on the web namely 'Tom's Hardware' confirmed it as a reasonable PSU, and for £70 I should hope so to.
Now for the bad news...having uninstalled etc etc swapped cards out and installed new drivers....there is no difference at all. Same issue as before, you get to the XP login screen and it hangs in various different ways.

MacBook Pro (mid-2009) is a complete mess: constant freezing/crashing
Let me start with a bit of history: I bought my MBP in August 2009, and since then it has gotten progressively more aggravating. The hard drive failed a year ago and I had it replaced in April, and then it failed once again, and got a new one in October (2010), along with a new hard drive cable.
Unfortunately, about two weeks ago, the computer went completely on the fritz. It would freeze (beachball) for no apparent reason, other than when the hard drive was being used, such as going through iTunes, Safari, or Aperture. However, after doing a disk check, both in Disk Utility and using fsck in Single User mode, there were absolutely no errors to be found, which, unlike the two times my hard drive failed, shows that the HDD is indeed okay.
I did an archive and install and it seemed to have helped the problem for a grand total of 2 weeks. This week, my computer starting going at it again, and not even consistently. On Tuesday, it would be just about unusable, beachballing at the slightest "load" (such as opening a third tab in Safari), and that one freeze would bring down the entire system. Everything, even if it's working, is slow and laggy--things like scrolling down or clicking on something might trigger a beachball for a second or two, or just take far too long even with no beachball. After a bunch of forced restarts, my screen began flickering on the edges, most visibly at a high brightness. However, after several more restarts, it quit doing it--this also happened during the first set of crashes two weeks ago.
Yesterday, my computer was more or less fine, and I might've only restarted it once or twice. Today however, we're back to where we were two days ago--constant freezes that all but prohibit me from even going on the internet. The computer gets stuck going to sleep and has trouble waking up. It doesn't respond fully to when I plug it into my Henge Dock (the Henge Dock is not the problem, because the MacBook acts just as badly on its own), in that the display never shows up. One time today, it woke up from sleep, but the menubar icons (SystemUI Server) had crashed, and subsequently everything else as well.
The most confusing part about all this is that there is NOTHING to be seen in Console in terms of any crashes, whether an app, the kernel, or any processes. I also took my computer to the Apple Store this week, and Spotlight didn't work except for maybe a dictionary entry on the term entered (I don't use Spotlight so I never noticed this). Even when booted off an external HDD, that external OS couldn't search my hard drive either, or it was really, really slow at it. More surprising were the results of the hardware test; it came up completely clear, with no errors. The genius suggested I do a clean install of my OS, which is a ridiculous solution, as I had done this last year already and the OS I was running before had been migrated from multiple computers for years beforehand. I'm sure you all well know how big of a pain it is to do that. Otherwise, it's sending the computer over to the Apple depot.
I'm sorry for the extremely long-winded rant/problem descriptions, but I really just want to know from people with perhaps more experience in incomprehensible Mac problems what might be wrong with my computer. I really think it's a deep hardware issue, such as a bad logic board. I'd like to hear some opinions before I back everything off and ship this POS (the most unreliable Mac I've ever owned) to Apple. Thanks so much for reading and I hope somebody can help answer my question!After opening the computer up the only evidence of where liquid has been is on the corner with hard drive / cd drive etc. There is not evidence of liquid damage to logic board on the otherside of the computer. Hard Drive and Ram have both been replaced.
Obviously there is still a chance liquid has got to the other area and I have not realised it... -
10.7.5 suddenly slows and then freezes
My computer has just started to suddenly slow way down and then it freezes completely. When I reboot it seems fine, for perhaps 10 minutes or half an hour, but then it starts to lock up again. Any idea what the problem is? Here is my EtreCheck report:

I bought a replacement drive and am restoring my time machine back up now.
I am a bit annoyed that the B&H guys got this one wrong but I have to give them credit for underselling me rather than overselling me; I do appreciate that.
Also worth mentioning is that the 3TB Seagate drive was less than 2 years old and is supposedly still under warrantee. I am looking forward to seeing what kind of support I get from them.
So big thanks to you, Bob, for your very good suggestions. The Apple community has come through strong for me and I appreciate it. -
Hi there, I have a 2008 iMac 24' 3.06 Intel Duo with 4gb ram. And yesterday it was working totally fine and jolly with no issues. Then I noticed there was an OS X update for Mavericks, so I finally decided to do it, and once it was rebooted it went to like the grey screen and I could move my mouse, just nothing else was there. So I tried to restart it, and then it booted up, but was really laggy, and so I decided to restart it and try again, this time the iMac froze at the login. So I decided to take it apart, pull the 500gb hard drive, connect it to my MacBook Pro, and then formatted it in Disc Utility. From there, I opened the Mavericks installer on my MacBook and then installed it to the iMac's hard drive via usb hard drive enclosement. And once the install of Mavericks was completed, I put the hard drive back into the iMac and tried to boot it. It now boots up to the white screen with the Apple and the loading circle underneath the Apple and then it freezes and doesn't go any further. So then once that happened, I turned it off and tried to boot it into recovery mode. Then it freezes on the screen with the Apple and loading circle below it. Then out of desperation, tried to use a bootable disc of Mavericks to see if i can at least get the iMac to boot up again, with no success. It froze at the same point again. So now I reach out to the Apple Community to see if anyone else has an idea on what I can do or if anyone had this issue and what they did to resolve it. Any help would be great. Thanks.
mddcfilms and Pat75, I'm having precisely this same issue -- no booting but spinning and freezing gear under the Apple logo. Have either of you come to a resolution? Here are my details:
iMac, Early 2008, 24”, 3.06 GHz, 4GB
September 2013: Nvidia GeForce 8800 GS GPU repaired, HDD replaced with Western Digital 2TB
21 April 2014: Erased HDD with Disk Utility on Mavericks USB; clean installation of Mavericks from the USB. Process completed without issue, including registration process. After a minute or two of poking around, machine shut down immediately (not through the shut-down process).
Since then it will not boot up. Grey screen and Apple logo appear, with gear spinning; the gear freezes, then the machine tries to boot up again. Occasionally I’ll hear “To use English for the main language, press the return key.”
I’ve tried booting into Safe Mode; same gear freeze and restart.
I’ve tried booting to the 10.9 Recovery disk; same gear freeze and restart.
Tried booting from Mavericks USB; same freeze and restart.
Tried booting from 10.6.3 DVD; same freeze and restart.
Ran Apple Service Toolkit (at Stormfront in the UK), which turned up nothing in error.
Started in single-user mode to test HDD and RAM, which are fine.
Started in verbose mode to check logs; some error messages but nothing seems crucial. After the log screen, the grey screen and Apple logo appear, gear spins, and then freeze.

Ideas: Potential booting flaw in Mavericks installation. Firmware incompatibility with Mavericks. Hardware issue in Nvidia GPU (known for problems). At the moment I'm hoping that it's a Mavericks installation or firmware issue, though I suspect the Nvidia GPU has blown up on me. These graphics cards are known for being pieces of junk, so I may try installing the lower spec ATI Radeon 2600 GPU if I can find one at a reasonable price.
Anybody else have precisely these problems or have any advice? -
My new Radeon X800 XT gives me... a blue screen
Hi everyone,
I was lucky enough to find a Radeon X800 XT at OWC, and when I install it, all I get are two solid blue monitors. I swapped back to my old video card (9600 Pro) and everything works fine, but when I install the new one...nothing but blue.
- The fan is spinning on the x800xt
- I have installed the drivers and all the updates from ATI.
- I am running OS X (10.4.8)
- I am using the AGP port ( I have an older G5)
Any suggestions? Hopefully it is I who is faulty and not the card...

Thought I'd throw in my experience on that. I had to wipe my G5 and installed a fresh copy of Tiger. I ran all the Apple updates from Software Update etc. In my case however I forgot to reinstall any of the ATI software.
After 2 days, the fan on my X800XT would just stop. No warning, nothing, the fan would just stop (and in turn cause the card to start to overheat). After a quick restart/shutdown, the fan would spin right back up. Now, like MANY others have reported, my card's fan makes a lot of noise, so at first I thought the fan was gone. However, since my fan would start right back up after a reboot, I began to look into software stuff.
In the end I reinstalled all the ATI software (prefs pane, and the ROMXtender etc.), and have not had ANY fan issues for almost a month (knock on wood). I know I may have to replace my fan at some point, but these random stops were DEFINATLY a software issue, and just letting the Tiger driver's etc. sit alone caused my fan to just stop.
I know Tiger's updates are more recent than what is on ATI's site, but in my experience, only the ATI software kept my fan from stopping. Just my 2 cents…

My computer was working great for the longest time. Then all of a sudden, my video freezes (you tube and sites that use flash are really bad for freezing) and the sound repeats very fast (like a CD skipping but faster). I have done all the updates, tried firefox, chrome, and IE7, 8, 9 and 10. I removed my Radeon HD 6850 card from my tower and still freezes with on board video. Any help is appreciated. Windows 7 proffesional 64 bit IE 10. Intel Core I7, 12 gigs RAM.
I believe that error code does indeed imply a fan motor issue. That's what the "4MOT" means. I don't know how to decode the rest but that info may indicate which fan is failing. Not knowing how to decode that means you will have to try to inspect the fans yourself to see if they are all spinning. I think the only fix may be to replace the failing fan. And if that fan still fails you may have a logic board problem. Either way, not good news. Sorry.
Obviously I suggest you only try to inspect the fans when your machine starts behaving strangely again. Don't forget to check the fan in the video card too.
I'm assuming that when you say your machine freezes it hasn't had a thermal shutdown. In a thermal shutdown all the fans except a single exhaust fan will indeed stop. I'm basing this on my personal experience where my 5870 video card's fan wouldn't always spin up because it couldn't overcome its starting friction. The card would overheat, and the machine would shut down due to the thermal cutoff, all except a single exhaust fan. A new 5870 fixed my problem. But I'm mention this because it obviously doesn't make any sense to check the fans when the machine has this kind of cutoff. So I hope all your fans are still running when your machine freezes -- except the errant one of course. -

ATI x800 XT and G5 Dual 2 not cooperating - no picture. Help
Folks, I just got an ATI Radeon X800 XT Mac Edition today, installed it, and could not get to my login screen.
Here's what happens.
- power machine on, I hear the ATI fan blow for some seconds
- fan quiets
- apple logo appears against grey screen with spinning wheel thing (not the beach ball, but the grey one)
- full blue screen shows up, then a different shade of blue, then the curser, no login screen
- it hangs there
My machine worked fine when i put my 9600 XT back in so there's nothing wrong with the computer. I tried the card in another G5 with no success.
Just wondering if anyone had these issues before I send it back.

Works perfectly on both my G5/Dual 2.5 and G5/Dual 2.7. If it still does not work try to reinstall the latest Combo update, presently Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update (PPC)

PE7 Memory Issues and Program Freezes Editing AVCHD
I am suffering recurring "low system memory" warnings and program freezes and "bombs" when trying to edit AVCHD video clips captured from my Sony HDR-S11 hard drive camcorder.
I just bought a brand new computer specifically for these editing chores. The system I have is WELL above the minimums specified in the PE7 documentation. I am running Win XP SP3 (clean installation on a 500 GB hard drive), Intel 9400 quad core processor, Asus P5KSE ATX motherboard, 4 GB of RAM, ATI Radeon 3600 video card with 512 MB on-board processing, etc. I have installed only minimal software on the computer, intending to dedicate it primarily to Blu-Ray video processing.
My current project is about 1 hour and 27 minutes long. I have tried editing with both the "hard drive camcorder" and "AVCHD" full-HD presets for the project. While the AVCHD preset produces clearly better results - at least initially - by the time I reach approximately 1 hour into the import of my video clips to the Sceneline, problems begin to occur. They are usually manifested as a warning dialog box informing me that I am running low on system memory and should save my project and proceed with caution. I save what I was doing and then try to "cautiously" continue with the editing. If I click and hold on the taskbar slider to move either forward or backward in the Sceneline, I almost always get a hang-up of the program wherein it will not react to any keyboard or mouse inputs. If I persist, sometimes the program will momentarily revive but further attempts to edit often result in a spontaneous shutdown of the program wherein PE7 abruptly closes and I am taken directly to my desktop.
And during the times that I am able to edit, I have encountered the same kind of glitchy previews of my AVCHD source data that many others have reported on these forums. In scanning those threads, it looks like we are all out of luck on that one until Adobe comes out with an upgraded version of PE7.
I have worked through the Help Section procedures "Troubleshooting system errors and freezes in Premier Elements 7 (Windows XP)" with no improvement. Many of those checks do not apply to me since I basically started with a blank hard drive. I have no old codecs loaded. I have the latest drivers for my motherboard and video card. I don't have any fonts installed that did not come with Windows or PE7. I uninstalled and reinstalled PE7. My virus software (McAfee) is up to date and I performed a total system scan with no findings. Nothing has really helped me to be able to do stable and reliable edits of my source clips.
This is especially frustrating because I used PE4 for more than a year and NEVER had any freezes or bombs when editing HDV clips from my previous Sony HDR-HC1K taped-based HD camcorder. I thought that creating a capable video-dedicated computer would insure that I wouldn't have problems like these with AVCHD. Looks like I was mistaken again.I couldn't agree more about the basic non-functionality of PE7 when it comes to handling large AVCHD projects, David. We were both taken in by our previous favorable experiences with earlier versions of PE.
My original problem came with a project similar to your own: lots of smalll files (clips) that added up to a large total project. The problems with memory shortfall occur when you pull a large number of clips from the Media window down to the project line. I had no trouble getting my 552 individual clips downloaded from my camcorder to the "Get Media" window. It was only when I dragged them down into my Sceneline that the wheels started to come off. With a great deal of patience and several reboots, I got my 552 clips loaded into my project but got into immediate and deep trouble when trying to edit the raw footage into final form. Apparently PE7 juggles the huge (in my case about 18 GB) file every time you try to do an edit and the manipulation of the big file is what eats up the memory.
As pointed out by earlier posts, AVCHD is efficient as a compression format for the raw video files but is extemely processor and memory-intensive when you try to edit a file with a lot of individual clips.
I certainly didn't know that I was biting off such a big piece of new technology when I bought my new Sony AVCHD camcorder. I don't think the shortcomings of AVCHD are very widely appreciated except by people who have confronted them head-on as you and I have done.
I fear that the solution for these difficulties will be beyond the scope of a patch by Adobe. Both you and I are using what should be a near-state-of-the-art computer with appropriate hardware and we are barely able to work on an AVCHD project. The multiple project export method that I outlined above is unquestionably "cheesy" as you suggest but some vatiation on it is about the best you are going to do with AVCHD in PE7 for the foreseeable future.
