RadeonHD5770: No VT-switch w/ FOSS driver, black artifacts w/ Catalyst

Well, the title is pretty descriptive.
I recently bought an ATI Radeon HD 5770, and having been spoiled by Nvidia, drivers remained an afterthought. What a mistake!
I have never been able to set it well with Arch.
With the xf86-video-ati, I could not VT-switch. Doing so resulted in a black screen which was still responsive to the keyboard but fed no graphics to the monitor. I could switch back to X, though. I tried both with the default settings and with KMS disabled.
Note that I could use the console normally until I startx'ed. Then it'd be impossible to VT-switch.
Some time ago (a few minutes) I decided to do something about it and I installed the fglrx driver with the catalyst 10.6-1 from the AUR.
Now I can VT-switch just fine, though I don't think KMS is enabled due to the time it takes to VT-switch.

So I guess the above is weird.
But the main problem is that I keep encountering black rectangles covering widgets. In firefox sometimes a whole tab is blacked-out.
Does anyone has thoughts on this?
(just typing the line above and hitting enter twice made the foreground and background of the letters go to black. weird.)

I don't think fglrx really likes KMS from xf86-video-ati. I think it is best to remove it. In the wiki it says you should boot with nomodeset added to the kernel line but you don't need this I think.
The problem with the black artifacts in firefox are really new: It came with catalyst 10.6 which was released yesterday...

When you use the one with catalyst 10.5 everything should be fine.
The vt switch issue is strange... But keep in mind that xf86-video-ati does not support the new evergreen gpus very well yet:

i have a 13" macbook pro. I just got an older generation 15" macbook pro (refurbished from apple) because i need the pci port.

15" macbook pro (the one i just got) works like a charm
13" macbook pro keeps prompting me to restart the computer after the apple picture comes up. In other words, snow leopard won't even boot up

If you switched drives then your new computer now has an older version or an older build of OS X that cannot boot the new computer because it does not have the required hardware support extensions.
You have two options: 1. Switch the drives back; 2. Reinstall OS X on the new computer using the discs that came with it. This will not erase your files but it will install a fresh copy of OS X that works with your new computer. A reinstall will take about one hour plus or minus.

My external drive switched from g drive to f, my itunes won't change to drive f, and it says drive g is unavailable, what can I do?

This is not the easiest sight to sign up for and submit a question. However my external drive switched from g drive to f. As I downloaded the new version of itunes it won't change from g drive to f drive when I click the button to change. It just says g drive is unavailable to download itunes which I already aware of but it won't let me browse and find the right drive my external drive is on. It won't configure or anything what do I do?

Display switches to green and black colors

New RFB 2.4gig MacBook Pro display switches to green and black colors and looks like a 256 color mode. It has done this two days in a row and only after surfing for about 1 hour. Restart fixes the problem. Usually when this occurs I have Safari, Opera, Mail and maybe another program open and occurs when closing windows in rapid succession. Situation does not occur for the remainder of the day.

The problem has not occurred for two days after extensive use of the laptop. Both times that I got the green and black screens was after using the 5.8GHz telephone handset near the laptop. I updated to the latest Flash Player but I doubt Flash was the cause of the problem since Flash is regularly used and the condition only repeats when the telephone handset is used near the laptop. Never have had a problem like this with 6 previous Mac laptops.

If you go into "settings" and then go into "accessibility" you can turn on or off " invert colors". This should do the trick.

Hi, I'm 14 years old and about a month ago I purchased a white iPad 2 and i find the white bezel somewhat annoying and i would like to switch out for a black one. Can I come in the store and switch it out for no or little cost? Or am I just out of luck?

You can't exchange it because you don't like the color, if it was within 14 days you could have returned it and bought a different one but you said you have had it for a month.

During call suddenly switch off display to black screen. Calling continues normaly , but is not possible finish this , I must switch off and on full iPhone...... When you make a call or get a call, the screen is supposed to turn off when you bring it to your ear (it has proximity sensors that activate when on a call). It does this so your face doesn't touch the screen while active and push a button.
When you pull it away it is supposed to turn back on.
If it doesn't turn back on there are two possible causes. First case is those that buy and use a case for the phone. If you have a case, there is a good chance you are either using an older case (made for first gen iPhone) on a newer iPhone 3G or your case is just poorly designed. Either way, some cases have a habit of covering the sensor thus it cannot tell when you put the phone to your face or pull away.
If you have a cases (especially if an older case on a new iPhone 3G) remove it and see if the problem continues.
The other possible problem is just a bad sensor. So if you are not using a case and having this problem, take unit to an Apple Store for replacement.
My guess is that you are using a case that was made for the 1st Generation iPhone and not the new iPhone 3G (there is a difference...you cannot use an older case on the newer phones).

Black artifacts in Screen Sharing

Hi everyone,
do you also get these black artifacts from time to time when using Screen Sharing from a 10.7 Client to a 10.7 Server? Moving windows around sometimes removes them, but they do reappear.

I am experiencing the same exact problem using os x lion's built-in screen sharing app. It's driving me insane. I always have to grab a window and drag it aroung the screen to clear out these artifacts. I am running screen sharing ver 1.3 on both machines; macbook pro (mid-2010) to mac mini 2011 (latest). How do i apply this ARD update. Aren't these updates for the full version of the Apple Remote Desktop application? I was really hoping that the latest update to lion 10.7.1 would address this issue.

X blacks out... ATI HD3450 with FOSS driver

I'm a formal Ubuntu user (was LOTS better that M$ **), I've installed Arch linux now. I'm booting fine (through ubuntu grub2, I'll 'fix' that later on), I love it. It's a clean OS, I'm planning LXDE.
I've two users: myself and root. Installed xorg-server, init etc,

If I run startx through my reg. user account, I get a black screen. Just black, no cursor, no terminal, all pixels set to #000000. Though, if I run

It seems things went from bad to worse when you tried to setup KMS, can you post the files you edited?
I edited modprobe, but I reset it when the system failed to start. Didn't change anything else after the reïnstallation (I first installed Arch, messed it up with KMS and reïnstalled)

it's for fglrx, the commercial/prop. driver. Didn't try that yet...
EDIT: Okay, I threw my pc open to check whether I've pci graphics or AGP graphics. Stupid me. I thought I had PCI!!
For AGP support, it is necessary to add intel_agp (or ali_agp, ati_agp, amd_agp, amd64_agp etc.) before the radeon module.
I hope this will work. I'll report if it does.
EDIT2: How do I know what I need? I've 64bit Arch on a amd motherboard (Phenom X3 cpu). So amd64? How do I install this module (what's the pkg name?)
EDIT3: Mobo manual tells me about 2 pci slots and 2 pci-e... I've to wash my eyes with soap. No AGP on the mobo...

Speed up early 2009 macbook5,2 by switching mechanical hard drive to SSD

I am running Mavericks on an early 2009 Macbook5,2 4gb RAM CPU@2ghz Intel core 2 duo. It is running at an unacceptably slow speed. Network performance is very hopeless too. I am wondering if switching mechanical hard disk to a SSD would revive this macbook enough to keep it for a few more years. Please advise if this approach has a chance to improve its performance adequately. If yes, what steps to follow to migrate software on my existing hard drive to SSD?

Your Macbook has a SATA bus.

I have used this in SATA 1 systems without any issues (the OCZ Vector is an example of problems with SATA 1).
2. Replacing the drive can be done using these steps - https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Core+2+Duo+Hard+Drive+Replacement/514
3. I suggest you use an external drive and make a Time Machine Backup of your MB, before you make any changes. If you have a Time Capsule, it can help as well (otherwise see if you can find a USB/FW external drive for backup).
4. Once you have a good backup, replace the drive using steps in 2. Take the old drive from the MB and put it in an external SATA enclosure (preferably one that has both USB and Firewire), so it becomes your external boot disk. If you do not want a SATA enclosure, you can also consider a FW only enclosure.
5. You can now boot from the external disk. Restore the TM backup in step 3 to the internal SSD. You will have to format the internal SSD (because it is usually unformatted). FW connectivity will allow you to daisy-chain the TM backup and your external boot drive. The restore also makes your internal drive bootable. All your applications/settings/accounts/passwords will also be preserved this way. You are essentially restoring everything from the old drive to the new drive.

Can I switch external hard drives and still access old Time Machine backups?

I have a Mac Book Pro linked to 2 1TB external hard drives, one used as my Time Machine Back up, the other used as a manual ad hoc back up and to store even older files.
The TM back up drive is now full. If I just unplug it/switch it off and plug in and set up a new 2TB hard drive as my TM back up, will I still be able to access the back ups on the original TM drive if necessary, through TM?
Wil it be a start over situation with the new drive, performing a complete back up to begin with?
Or would you advise me to transfer the old back folder to the new drive, given that it will be larger?

Thank you for this - I think the easy option by far appears to be to leave existing backups on disk 1, and plug in disk 2 and start over.

Capturing video straight from a switcher to hard drive???

I am shooting a seminar this weekend and want to go "tapeless". I will be using a Datavideo SE500 switcher withthese outputs:
Video Out:
Composite Video x2, 1 Vpp @ 75 ohms, on BNC connectors
S-Video, on 4-Pin Connectors
Component Video, derived from Composite and Y/C using a breakout cable
I will have with me, my Macbook pro with Firewire 400/800 inputs, USB, etc.
I have been told that maybe the DVI for an external monitor can be used ad an "in"?
I did a little expirament I went from my Panasonic DVX100B to a Sony palmcorder via RCA to DV cord that came with palmcorder, then with palmcorder in VCR mode, I went from palmcorder to Mac Pro with Firewire and captured with iMovie.
Is there a way to capture this video right into my project in FCP, and how should i do it?

p.s.- i have access to a DSR45 deck if it might have the connections i need.

My signal path is this:
Analog out of switcher to JVC DV deck (recording to DV tape) - (I actually feed the signal through a chyron, then through a VDA and then into two matching DV decks so I can swap tapes without interruption).
FireWire out of (one) JVC deck to Mac (capturing in real time to HDD using 'Non-Controllable Device' setting
I have the 500GB external drive on FW800, while the video is coming in on the FW400. I do this on both my MacPro tower and MacBookPro (but you can NOT do this on the new MBPs, see below).
But even then, if I remember correctly, a single FW pipe can handle two-way DV streams (in from device AND out to HDD).
(ASIDE TO AUDIENCE:
This is exactly why I'll not be buying a new MacBookPro, because they removed every single feature that made it a Professional machine:
No full-size DVI out
No FW400
Glare-only screen (although I see that the 17" does have a non-glare option)
Disk drive on side instead of front
If I wanted a non-pro computer I would have bought a MacBook! In my line of work (Film, Video, Audio, Theater production, and projection using Catalyst) I MUST have a full size DVI; I still use many FW400 devices and I still need 2 FW ports anyway; I simply will never use a glare (glossy) screen; and on my cramped and crowded workspaces, I don't have room for side-loading optical disk drives (the front is always clear because I need the room for my hands).
It is NOT professional to have to carry around a DVI adapter and several PCI Express cards to get my computer to do what I need it to do.)
