Radio mode on Airport Extreme 2013

There are only three options to set Radio mode:
Automatic
802.11a/n-802.11b/g
802.11a-802.11b/g
Why here isn't 802.11ac mode??

You are using the wrong software to try to change settings on your AirPort Extreme 802.11ac model.
Please review the System Requirements for the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme from the information sheet on the AirPort Extreme.
Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher
http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
But, even if you are using the correct software to administer the AirPort Extreme, there is no setting for 802.11ac since it is always on by default. In fact, you cannot change the Radio Mode at all.....because there is no Radio Mode setting.  The Radio Mode is set on Automatic by default and it cannot be changed.

  • I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network

I connected an airport extreme (2013) to an existing pc network and I had to change all my ip addresses.  I managed to catch on to the apple replacement range and reset all my printers' addresses manually.  Was there an easier way to handle this?  Also, I lost the connection to my WD Worldbook drive though and haven't been able to come up with a work around.  Any ideas would help, thanks!

First, to answer your question about the WD drive - I could not find it with an ethernet connection.  I tried connecting to the usb port on the Extreme, but it was not visible there either.
When connecting an external network drive to the AirPort Extreme by Ethernet, the drive would be providing the file sharing service. This would be typical of a Network Attached Storage (NAS) device. If your WD Worldbook offers NAS services then it should be found by network clients per WD's instructions.
When connected to the Extreme's USB port, the Extreme would take over the file server services. However, the drive must not be formatted in either NTFS or ExFAT as either are not recognizable by the Extreme for sharing out. My guess is this is the case and why the AirPort Utility cannot "find" the drive.
If your WD Worldbook has an Ethernet interface that is the one you should use for best performance. It is still possible that this drive is using an IP address that is not in the default range of the Extreme.
How can I reset the IP range on the router.  I have to use the iPad app to manage the router and I didn't see any way to change the range.  Did I miss something or would I need to use an Mac computer to get more options?
You can change the IP address range of your AirPort using the AirPort Utility on your iPad.
    To change the range:
    Run the AirPort Utility.
Select the AirPort Extreme, and then, select Edit.
    Select Advanced.
    Select DHCP Range.
    Select 192.168

  • Guest Mode for Airport Extreme   Edimax 3G 6200L

    Hello everybody,
I've been dealing with this issue for some time now, and I can't seem to be able to sort it out, so I need your help.
I live in a place where we have lots of guests, so I need to share with them my internet connection. I don't want them to have access to my network, so I would like to create a Guest network.
My hardware is: a 3G Airtel dongle, an Edimax 3G 6200L router and an Apple Airport Extreme 5th generation. The internet comes throught he dongle, I live in Africa and there is no other connection available right now. The dongle is connected to Edimax router, because Airport Extreme doesn't support usb connections.
Then, the Edimax router is set to send internet via ethernet only (wifi is turned off to avoid interference). It is connected (via Ethernet) to the Airport Extreme, which is set to Bridge Mode. Airport Extreme creates and send wifi signal.
The problem is that I cannot set the Guest Network on the Airport Extreme. I know I have to change the Bridge Mode to DHCP or DHCP and NAT, but then the internet doesn't work at all and Airport Utility complains about double NAT.
Can anyone please help me with the configuration? Is there something I must do on the Airport Extreme settings page? Is there something I need to change in Edimax settings page?
    Thank you in advance!

This is going to be difficult.
I think you will have to just test a couple of scenarios.. and you should start by saving the current configuration on both the edimax and the Apple Extreme. Just so you can easily revert if you need to.
    1. Do a test of the actual IP being delivered to your system.
Check the edimax and find the WAN IP .. this is important as many ISP do not give public IP on wireless anyway. If this is the case you are probably wasting your time.. I would simply turn the wireless back on on the edimax and set it to isolation (if possible.. it is not in the manual for the 6200nl I downloaded).. you can set the wireless channel to say 1 and use the AE at 11 but leaving it at auto is usually fine. Use the wireless on the edimax as your guest wireless.. but to properly protect your computer files you may still need to set it to NAT.. and ignore the double NAT.
    2. Put the AE in the DMZ of the Edimax and ignore the double NAT.. this is better than the above.
    3. Turn off the NAT in the edimax
There is no bridge mode mentioned in the manual for the Edimax.. so the only suggestion I can give is to try turning off the NAT in the edimax.. and set the AE to use dhcp for internet and dhcp and NAT for network.. reboot both edimax and AE and see what happens. The IP on the WAN must be different subnet to the IP on the LAN so if both end up 10.x.x x addresses you will need to move the LAN IP of the AE to some other range. .you do this via the dhcp setup .. which is very odd.

I have an airport extreme 2013. Why does my airport utility sometimes display IP addresses and other times the names of the devices? I want it to always display the device names.

The utility has had less and less useful information .. it might be time to simply find a different utility.
Fing network scanner. iphone and ipad.
    https://itunes.apple.com/au/app/fing-network-scanner/id430921107?mt=8
This is very popular.. I do not know of what works well on Mac OS because i have installed 5.6 utility which of course has far more info than the later toy version. Plus using an Asus router which has excellent listing of all the clients.
Sometimes beating yourself up to make apple routers do what you want is easier solved with lateral thinking.

  • Using TImed Access mode on Airport Extreme with other routers in bridge mode. Not working as expected.

I am trying to setup timed access mode on my airport extreme in order to limit the times devices can connect to my network, but I am having some trouble.
My setup is as follows  Cable Modem ---> Airport Extreme ---> Netgear router
The Airport is running DHCP and the Netgear is in bridge mode. The only purpose of the Netgear is to provide a wireless access point for older b/g wifi devices. The Netgear is connected to the Airport by an ethernet cable from one of its LAN ports. All ip addresses are supplied by the Airport.
When I list a device mac number in the Airport extreme's timed access table it does seem to block the device if the device trys to connect to the airport's wireless service, but the device is still able to obtain service through the Netgear wireless service. I want the device to be blocked on both wireless networks. I thought this would work since all DHCP is on the airport. Why is the Airport allowing the device to connect when it comes in through the Netgear?
In this example the device I am trying to block is 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2.
Looking at the log on the airport I see the following entry when the device (when permitted) connects to the airport wireless
    Nov 30 22:43:12
    Severity:5
    Associated with station 5c:59:48:ba:28:d2
If instead the device connects to the Netgear wireless I see the following log entry on the airport (this connection gets through even if the mac address above is listed as blocked on the airport)
    Dec 01 10:46:29
    Severity:5
    Connection accepted from [fe80::223:12ff:fe29:acfe%bridge0]:54774.
It appears that the Netgear router (while bridging the network) is somehow modifying the mac address format in a way that the airport does not recognise it as the device to block.
What can I do to fix this?
    Thanks.

The Netgear wireless server has control over what what devices are allowed to connect.
Unless you tell the Netgear what devices you want to allow to connect, it will allow any wireless device to connect as long as it knows the wireless network password.
IF.... .you were using two AirPort Extremes, and not a Netgear, the two Extremes would communicate to each other....so you would only have to enter Timed Access settings on one router and other AirPort would automatically pick those settings up.
But, even this was not the case until the last year or so when Apple updated firmware.  A few years ago, you might have had 2 Apple AirPort Extremes on the network, but you still had to manually set up Timed Access on both devices separately.
Bottom line, you need to setup the equivalent of Timed Access on the Netgear router.

  • Bridge mode for airport extreme or dsl modem? Recomendations?

I'm upgrading to a 'blisteringly fast' 12 Mbps with my local DSL ISP (no cable in my area), and I'm thinking of changing out my
My current, antiquated setup is with a Speedstream 5200 Modem/Router (8 Mbps max) with a Linksys E1200 802.11n router. We have an Apple TV with HDMI into a stout Panasonic plasma, 2 Macs, 3 iPads (2xgen4 + mini), 3 5C iPhones and an old Dell Winbox (XP vintage that I will toss out) that access this configuration in a good-sized house (2 stories, ~4000 sq.ft.).
The Linksys 'n' speed router is somewhat adequate, but we want to do movie/video/music streaming to the AppleTV and we want to buy a new Mac (probably a Mac-mini to replace the Winbox). I also want to future-proof this setup for a few years, given the pain it usually is to do a wholesale swap-out like what I'm contemplating. I want to swap-out this pairing with:
a DSL modem/router to either a Netgear DM111PSP-100NAS (ADSL2+) or an older, but robust Actiontec GT-701D (or the newer -NF).
an Airport Extreme (802.11ac) to manage my Apple menagerie for fast streaming, and also to hang a poor man's network file storage off the USB port.
I'm asking for some recommendations from the community at-large so I can minimize the hassles when I do this swap-out.  Which of the two devices (the modem/router or the AE router) should I put in bridge mode? Any performance penalties one way or another, or hidden gotchas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Craig

I'm back and wanted to put a coda on this thread.
First of all, many thanks to the recommendations by Tesserax and LaPastenague.  You helped allay my fears in converting over to the Time Capsule environment.
The home network is working just great.  Internal speed-ups all the way around.  TC is working great as both a file server AND a Time Machine site.  The Netgear DSL modem is the firewall and the DHCP server for my network.  As stated in earlier posts, it has superior firewall capabilities compared to the Time Capsule.  I configured the Time Capsule to Bridge Mode with my iPhone 5C, the configuration of which only took a couple of minutes.  The speed between the 802.11 ac devices, my TC and the new Mac Mini, are unbelievably fast--on the order of 150+ Mbps at a distance of 40 feet or so through several walls--beamforming really does appear to work as advertised.  That doesn't matter overall except for the Time Machine aspects, as my DSL line is a blisteringly fast 12 Mbps.
The only glitch I've had over the last 3 weeks was due to a short power outage, and the main problem was the networking with hard ethernet connection to the Time Capsule.  I had to reboot the Netgear modem, as it was in a funky state, while other devices, such as my new Mac Mini, were waiting for the modem to vend a DHCP address.  It turns out that the Apple TV had some persistence with its old DHCP-vended address, and the Mac Mini somehow received its IP address first--which conflicted with the Apple TV.  Now, I'm not sure why the wirelessly networked Mac Mini beat the Apple TV to receiving a DHCP vending first, but it did, and the address persistence of the Apple TV created a conflict on the Apple TV network connection.  Once I realized the problem, I shut down the Mac Mini and made sure all my other devices were off as well.  I then restarted the entire network, the Apple TV received its IP address first, and all was well again.  Granted, I could have disconnected the ethernet and allowed really fast wireless to the Apple TV, but it's only 4 feet away from the Time Capsule, so I might as well have the fastest pipe available for HD streaming to my large-format HD television.
The switchover was absolutely painless.  Both the modem and the Time Capsule took, all total, about 10 minutes to set up and configure.  Much easier than with Winboxes.  Other than the Apple TV IP conflict after the power outage, it's been a real delight.
I'm very happy I switched to this new network configuration.

  • Bridge mode for airport extreme

    Hi
My TimeCapsule is used as base station im my home network (linked via ethernet to my modem). How can set up my Airport Extreme in bridge mode in order to extend my wifi?
    Thanks!

The easiest way is to do a factory reset of the airport extreme and then configure it using the airport utility as a bridge. if you tell me what device and version of the airport utility software you are using I can be more specific.

    no   Enable IGMP Snooping
    sí    Standard Mode
    no  Blocking Mode
Los parámetros están en el menu "Advanced Setup" => "LAN"  (el mismo sitio que lo de "Configure the second IP ...")

  • Cannot access DSL modem in bridge mode w/ Airport Extreme

    Hi
    I have the following setup:
DSL Modem: Used in bridge mode + NAT/DHCP/Firewall turned off. Static IP is set to 192.168.2.1
Airport Extreme: In PPPOE mode with Shared IP (which is selected by default): Distributes IP range 192.168.1.X with subnet 255.255.255.0. At this point, Airport Extreme's IP address is what it gets from the ISP, basically DSL Modem is passing thru' this to the AE.
Ethernet cable is running from DSL modem to AE's WAN.
In this mode, everything works fine and me and all others can use Internet fine...
But the problem is that I can't ping/ access DSL modem at all in this mode. Basically, I need to login to the DSL modem to monitor my DSL connection quality (SNR, Attenuation, etc.) but whatever I tried I could not figure out how.
Basically, I tried setting a static IP on the DSL modem as 192.168.1.3, this did not work. I read somewhere that it needs to be on a different subnet, so tried using 192.168.2.1, that did not work either.
If I connect the DSL modem to a machine directly and set that machine's IP to 192.168.2.10, it can connect to the DSL modem, but there is no way I could access this DSL modem from the setup I explained above.
I am simply out of solutions at this point and any idea would be appreciated.
    Thanks a ton!

What you are asking about is generally possible but probably not with an Airport Extreme. As others have noted you SHOULD be able to access a DSL modem in bridge mode via it's "lan" IP address if you directly attach a cable to it and configure your computer with appropriate static IP settings (I'm assuming that in bridge mode the DSL modem has it's DHCP server disabled).
This approach can also be achieve through a router with sufficiently flexible configuration options (e.g. openwrt open-source firmware). Basically the router attaches its WAN port to the modem like usual. Then the router is configured to do PPPOE via the WAN port while SIMULTANEOUSLY assigning the WAN port a static IP address that can connect to the modem's LAN address. Finally the router firewall must be configured to pass traffic from the DSL modem LAN IP back to the network.
So your intuition suggesting that this should be possible is absolutely right. However; you can probably also see from the steps required why most modems simply (incorrectly) document that it isn't possible.
Here's a link with some gory details on achieving this with an openwrt-based router: https://forum.openwrt.org/viewtopic.php?id=10952

  • Airport Extreme (2013) Dropping network Constantly

Hi everybody, I just purchased the new airport extreme 2 days ago. The first one did the same thing so i went and replaced it last night thinking it was just the one being defective but apparently not since it is happening to this new one as well. I want to use this router but if this keeps happening i will have no choice but to just choose a different company. But i digress, the issue is that all my devices that would connect to the airport extreme (both wired and wireless) would drop the network and reconnect within 5 seconds or so. The status light remains the same green color. It is not my modem nor my isp because i had a linksys router set up before i purchased this AE and it has worked fine for years. I have recently upgraded to it and this happens only with the AE connected. It is not related to wireless channels because a wired ethernet cord connected to my windows desktop does the same. It drops the network and then it reconnects within 5 seconds. On my iphone, ipad, macbook it does this as well. Loses connection to the AE and reconnects. This happens every 30mins-1hour . It does it twice in succession. I dont understand the problem with it. I tried calling apple support but it seems like they defend their defective router to the end. It is not my modem or my isp i repeat because this all worked fine with my linksys instead of the AE. I am in need of dire help to fix this issue or else im going to just flat out have to exchange to an asus one.
I have scoured all over the forums to find a solution but so far nothing has worked. I have tried changing channels on the wifi, turning off ipv6, take off secuirity on the wifi, and i have tried restoring it to factory settings twice. Along with reverting to 7.7.1 and updating to 7.7.2. Like i said i need all the help i can get because i really would like to use this router but it seems like this is a persistent problem and apple doesnt even know how to fix it.

I was having the same problem, although not losing connectivity as often -- only several times a day. I noticed, though, that everything would be fine with my wireless devices downstairs, but then, within a few minutes of going to work upstairs on my iMac -- which was hooked up via network cable, not wireless -- my connection would often drop. The problem was that this was not always the rule, so I am not sure of the exact trigger. (You may ask why my iMac was hooked up with a wire? My computer speakers, which I like, are old and produce noise around wireless connections.) Anyway, the problem was getting worse, and earlier this week I decided to disconnect the wire from my iMac and go back to wireless with it.... Since then, I have not dropped a connection.... As I had previously been losing connectivity several times a day, this seems good evidence of the wired connection being the problem.... Well, more evidence, I lied, because I _have_ dropped the connection once, and that was when I turned on my Windows machine. It immediately started accessing the internet via Dropbox and within a minute my internet connection was down. Yes, the PC is connected by a wire. I disconnected that wire.... Btw, this is a latest generation iMac and Airport Extreme. Bought them both toward the end of last year.... I hope we can find a valid solution to this.... What I am wondering is whether I need to upgrade my network cables? Maybe the wires are not the right gauge? I have to admit that don't know much about such things.... So far, so good, though, with 100% wireless.

  • Airport extreme or netgear 3100 in bridge mode

I have just upgraded to fast internet and Telstra have supplied a Netgear 3100 D modem/router.
This modem is linked to an airport extreme (currently in bridge mode) which is the hardwired to a router (Intelligent) before hard wired to a time capsule and linked wireless airport express to send wireless around house.
my question is, what is the best set up. The netgear modem/router in bridge mode with airport extreme with DHCP and NAT or leaving the modem/router in DHCP and NAT and Airport extreme in bridge?
is one better than the other?
    thx

One is not better than the other....unless you require that the AirPort Extreme also provide a Guest Network, which it cannot do in Bridge Mode.
Things will be much simpler though, if you leave the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode and let the Telstra provide DHCP and NAT services for the network.

  • Connect MacbookPro and AirPort Extreme via 5Ghz channel

    Hi.
    I have three Apple devices:
    - Macbook Pro 13" 2012 year (802.11n wi-fi standart)
    - iPad mini with Retina 2013 year (802.11n wi-fi standart)
    - Airport Extreme 2013 year (with support 802.11ac wi-fi standart)
By default, a macbook device connected to the channel 2.4Ghz. Connection speed is set 217 Mbit/sec. If you divide the channels 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz, then the connection speed to 450 Mbit/sec on channel 5Ghz.
How to configure AirPort Extreme when macbook and iPad was connected to the AirPort using 5Ghz channel by default?

  • Extending Airport Extreme coverage

I just purchased the new Airport Extreme 2013.  Wonderful router, but I need to extend the network since some areas are still out of reach (big old house). Can I do it using something like the Dlink DIR505 router?... thanks

Hi Kappy - don't want to OT derail things here BUT what's happened to WDS mode ?
The reason why I ask is that Im extending my wifi network by using 2 N AExpress and 1 G AExpress. And am having some issues.
The G device doesnt seem to be able to talk to the new Extreme. The Extreme sees it over the network. There is no option to Extend for the G device - only to Join or Create. Everything is configured correctly and the light comes back green however there is no Internet connection.
The 2 N expresses are able to join in extend mode (no way in Participate in WDS, tho, I guess they've changed it) but Im quite sure they're not actually extending the network as signal strength remains the same whether they're powered on or off in close proximity to iPads or iPhones.
    cheers r

  • WDS on the 2.4Ghz Band of a Late 2009 Airport Extreme?

I recently added a dual radio late 2009 Airport Extreme as the foundation of my home network. I have the 2.4Ghz band set up as 802.11a/g only for my "g" clients and the 5Ghz band as 802.11n for my "n" clients. I have extended the 5Ghz "n-only" segment of my network to two remote Airport Expresses using the extend my network feature. I would also like to extend the 2.4Ghz "g" segment of my network using WDS (the only option, I believe) to an older Airport Express that I have. Is it possible to participate in a WDS network on the 2.4Ghz band only? I tried this last night (using the Airport Extreme 2.4Ghz MAC address and the older Airport Express MAC address) and kept getting a WDS error on the Airport Extreme. That may have been the result of a configuration error on my part, but I couldn't resolve it and ended up having to reset and reconfigure the Airport Extreme. Before I invest more time in another attempt, I was hoping to confirm whether what I am trying to do is possible. Has anyone been able to implement an arrangement like the one I am attempting?

+Would the wireless setup on the access point be "Create a Wireless Network" but then entering the same SSID, radio mode, security, etc. that the AEBS "g" network segment uses?+
    Yes, exactly correct.
But, ideally you would set the channel on the "remote" access point at least 5 channels away from the channel that the guest network was using on the AEBS to minimize the chances for wireless interference. You could try the channel set to "Automatic" and test to see if that works OK. In theory, the "Automatic" setting will do what you want. But it does not always do this.
Your setup should work very well. Please post back on your results.

  • Help setting up Open DNS with new airport extreme

I cant seem to get Open DNS to work with a new airport extreme. The status says I am not using Open DNS and its not filtering anything. I have followed the exact steps for set up listed on their website, checked the dns settings, cleared both caches and restarted the computer, modem and router with no success. I set the airport up in bridged mode, although I tried the other option under setup, but not sure what I was doing? I picked up this router because I wanted easy set up and the apple store assured me it would work with Open DNS. Oh, and I also downloaded the latest firmware update on the router. Can anyone help me with the settings or what else I need to check?

Sorry, I am not familiar with this product, so I checked online to pick up some information.  Here I am referring to the information found here:
    http://www.dslreports.com/faq/6096
I found that your device is mentioned as follows in the intro under Section 1 of this document:
The BellSouth supplied Westell 2100, 2200 and 6100 models (Models A90-210030-04, B90-220030-04, and B90-610030-06/C90-610030-06, respectively) share many features and functions.
Next, I am referring to the information under Section 2, under the heading of Standard Default Mode Connection (separate hub or switch present).  Unless you have changed the configuration on the Westell, this is how your device is operating. In this mode, the Westell device is acting both as a modem and router in one unit.
So, an attached router (AirPort Extreme) must be configured as a switch to work correctly. That is what Bridge Mode is....the AirPort Extreme is operating as a switch when it is in Bridge Mode (which would be the correct setting to use when the Westell is set to its Standard Default Mode).
Any changes that you want to make regarding DNS settings would need to be made on the Westell device, since it is acting as the main router on your network.
In Bridge Mode, the AirPort Extreme simply passes that information through to its connected devices. You will not be able to make any DNS related changes on the AirPort Extreme since it receives that info from the Westel device. Some service providers force you to use their DNS servers, so you might want to check with Bell South or AT&T for more information in this regard.
If you want to be able to configure the AirPort Extreme as the main router on your network, and instruct it to use the DNS information that you want, you will need to refer to the section under the heading of Bridged Ethernet Mode ( separate router present).
Please note that the first item under this heading specifies that "This is the preferred configuration when using a separate external router..." (which would be the AirPort Extreme in your case)
So, it appears to me that this would be the way that you must reconfigure the Westell device to allow the AirPort Extreme to function as the "main" router on your network. In this type of setup, you will be able to enter the DNS information that you want to use under the setup for the AirPort Extreme and it will act as you instruct.
The AirPort Extreme would not be configured in Bridge Mode for this....it would be configured to "Share a public IP address".
The next item in the article specifies that you "Must use a PPPoE client on the Router." This means that the AirPort Extreme would be configured to Connect Using = PPPoE as follows:
    AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
    Click the Internet icon
    Click the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = PPPoE
You would enter your user name (probably your email address), password, etc in this area. Leave the Service Area box completely blank. Set Connection to Always On, and Disconnect if Idle to Never
Click Update to save the new settings. Power off the Westell device after this and then restart it so that it will pick up the new information that you have programmed into the AirPort Extreme.
I want to stress that this is how I would try to configure the Westell and AirPort Extreme. But, as I said, have not used a Westell device, so I cannot say that this will work correctly for you.
It might be an excellent idea to contact Bell South or AT&T Support to ask for their opinion on this before you decide to change the configuration of the Westel device and the AirPort Extreme.
This type of thing can be intimidating for users, so you might elect to use the services of someone like the Geek Squad at Best Buy, or a similar service from a local computer firm. Perhaps the Apple store could help as well.
If it is not critical that you use Open DNS, you might want to simply leave things "as is", with the AirPort Extreme in Bridge Mode.
