Radio Mode Options

In my AE settings under radio mode I have 2 options:
1. 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
2. 802.11n only (2.4 Gz)
Now nobody has actually said so, but I get the impression that some people have more options. Anyone any comments and if I do have less options, anyone know why.

I think that the US MBP must be set to give the 4 options as in the US they of course can use the 5GHZ standard. In the UK we cant so it would make total sense not to offer the 5GHZ(on the Apple UK site it says 2.5 times faster,as opposed to 5 times faster on the US site).I can only tell you the options i have which are.
1.802.11n(b/g compatible)
2.802.11n only(2.4ghz)
3.802.11n(802.11a compatible)
4.802.11n only (5ghz)
It would be interesting to see what options are available to someone else who bought their Macbook and AEBS in the UK to see if they have the same options as you,or me.In the meantime i would sit tight and see.I guess if i am lucky and have more options than the UK standard i should use it but although ive tried to set it to 5ghz,the speed difference is,at the moment negligible,so i wouldnt worry too much at the moment about missing out!!

  • Radio Mode options in simultaneous and non-simultaneous models

I bought an Airport Extreme on eBay which claimed to be the latest model (MC340B/A), but what I received wasn't; it was MB053B/A. The Radio Mode options on the MB053B/A show as:
    802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)
    802.11n only (2.4 GHz)
    802.11n (802.11a compatible)
    802.11n only (5 GHz)
What options do the latest model offer?
Also, if my model isn't simultaneous dual-band capable, in what way is it "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)?"
    Michael

    Welcome to the discussions, MacGee!
MB053B/A is a previous generation AirPort Extreme that was discontinued in March 2009. Is it dual band capable....but not simultaneous dual band. In other words, the device can broadcast a radio mode of either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz, +but not both at once+.
The newer generation models are simultaneous dual band. MC340B/A would be the one that you want for simultaneous dual band and guest network options.
Also, if my model isn't simultaneous dual-band capable, in what way is it "802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)?"
The 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible) Radio Mode is the default setting of the older AirPort Extreme. It will allow "n", "g" and "b" devices to connect at the 2.4 GHz setting.
If you change the Radio Mode on your model to 802.11n only 5 GHz, only "n" capable devices will be able to connect.
The newer simultaneous dual band model(s) use a default Radio Mode that looks like this:
    802.11a/n 5 GHz -- 802.11n/g/b 2.4 GHz
The dashes separate the 5 GHz band on the left and 2.4 GHz band on the right. So devices can connect to either 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz depending on their capability. Faster "n" devices will connect at 5 GHz for fastest speeds. Older devices will connect at 2.4 GHz.

  • Radio mode option dissapeared from Aiport utility on 6. gen AP extreme

Hi! I am a new user of the new Apple Airport Extreme 6. gen. Everything works just fantastic so far. But I have one question. In the Airport utility 6.3 (wireless settings) I  have a little column called in English "radio mode" (just below the window I can rename my 5GHz WiFi and choose my country) when my previous Airport Extreme (5. gen.) is connected but when I connect my 6. gen. one, the column is not there anymore (see the first (5. gen. Extreme) and the second (6. gen. Extreme) screenshots). Sorry for the Czech language on the screenshots but I am sure that all of you know what I mean. The column where I can manually switch between 802.11a/n (5GHz) - 802.11b/g/n (2.4 GHz) radio modes. Is it just a problem with my Extreme or has Apple removed this feature from the new 2013 6. gen. Extreme? thanks

    why?
We are all users....just like you.....and cannot answer for decisions that have been made by Apple.
but as I said, I can see this option in my 5. gen. Extreme settings.
That is correct, but the "new" 802.11ac models do not provide this option.
So how can I disable 5GHz network in the case of 6. gen. Extreme?
It is not possible to disable the 5 GHz network in any version of the AirPort routers that offer simultaneous dual band performance.  The 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz networks are always active. You can turn both "on" or both "off", but you cannot do this individually by network.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz network if you wish.

  • AP1252 in dual radio mode with in-line power.

    Hi,
Has anyone actually managed to deploy the AP1252s in dual radio mode and been able to power via a POE device?
The information regarding max power supplied is misleading.
For example, the 6500 802.3af POE line cards appear to only provide a max of 16.8W (from the 12.2.33SXH2 release notes).
The 4500E with the new enhanced POE line cards can apparently provide 20W with 12.2.44SG release.
The 3560E/3750E documentation is contradictory - early bulletins state support for Enh POE and then the more recent notes state that it is not supported.
Any real world experience of this issue would be greatly received.
    Thanks

What you have here is correct. 6500 with a sup720 and 12.2.33shx2 will only provide max of 16.8W. The E-Series can provide the 20W max as long as you have the correct code.

  • Radio Mode "802.11n only", "802.11n (b/g compatible)" not available anymore

    Dear All,
Today I was checking my AE config (7.3.2) with Airport Utility 5.3.2 (532.8) and I realized that there are no 802.11n modes available anymore... Usually it had two options, "802.11n only" and "802.11n (b/g compatible)". I cannot find also the frequency option (2.4 or 5GHz), probably because this should be available only for n modes.
I would apreciate some help here
    Thanks in advance!

  • Optimal setting for radio mode

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station and an Airport Express; the latter extending the former. Apple's PDF on the subject made this relatively easy to do. However, my family has two Macs, a Macbook 802.11g and an iMac 802.11n.
Is there an optimal setting of the Airport Utility's Wireless "Radio Mode" for both of these machines that doesn't involve buying more Airports?

I would recommend using the "802.11n only (5 GHz) - 802.11b/g/n" setting for Radio Mode to support your two Macs. Note: You may need to hold down the Option key BEFORE making a selection in order to get the additional mode choices.

You are using the wrong software to try to change settings on your AirPort Extreme 802.11ac model.
Please review the System Requirements for the 802.11ac AirPort Extreme from the information sheet on the AirPort Extreme.
    Setup and Administration
iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 6 or later and AirPort Utility 1.3
Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.5 or later and AirPort Utility 6.3 or higher
    http://www.apple.com/airport-extreme/specs/
But, even if you are using the correct software to administer the AirPort Extreme, there is no setting for 802.11ac since it is always on by default. In fact, you cannot change the Radio Mode at all.....because there is no Radio Mode setting.  The Radio Mode is set on Automatic by default and it cannot be changed.

  • Airport radio mode different between base station and extender

So this has basically stumped me and i decided to ask the community.  I have a Time capsule1st gen that i use as my main base station. I set the radio mode to 802"11 N 2.4ghz only. On my airport extreme 1st gen, i set it to extend the network.  However when i check the radio mode on the airport extreme  its 802.11 n b/g compatible.  Id really rather have the entire network be N only but not 5 ghz as I still have devices that don't support the 5 ghz signal (ps4)

However when i check the radio mode on the airport extreme  its 802.11 n b/g compatible
Apple gives you only one option...theirs....when you extend a network using wireless.
If you can connect the Time Capsule and AirPort Extreme using a permanent wired Ethernet connection, you will regain the 50% speed loss that was imposed by the wireless connection between devices....and....you will be able to set the AirPort Extreme to use 802.11n 2.4 GHz Only as well.

  • Radio Mode

I don't see all these different radio modes that are talked about in this forum. I have a MacBook connected and sometimes a PowerBook connect to my Airport Extreme (802.11n). I have the radio mode set too automatic and the only two option I see is (802.11a/n-802.11b/g/n) & (802.11a-802.11b/g). Software and firmware are all up to date. Everything seems to be working fine, so I guess I should leave well enough alone. I'm just wondering if I'm missing out on something, like speed or distance.
    Steven

It's another of those Apple things to prevent you from having control.
Use Airport Utility, then Manual Setup (for the Base Station that interests you), then "Wireless" and hit the "Option - Alt" key and keep it pressed while at the same time clicking on "Radio mode".
The list of options you see (with a dual-band AEBS) should become much longer...
Now, if you use the option on the bottom, you will have the fastest speed, but the price you are likely to pay is that the signal strength will go down the drain.
The magic wall penetration is much reduced, going from 2.4 GHz to 5 GHz, though you will shake free of most other networks and cordless telephones.

  • Changed radio mode to 5 ghz using AirPort Utility, but download/upload speeds are unchanged.

I'm using both a Macbook that is 5 ghz compatible as well as an Airport Extreme that is able to transmit 5 ghz. When I switched my radio mode from 2.4 ghz to 5 ghz and ran speed tests, the download speed was at 2.7 mbps each time...in other words, switching to 5 ghz made no increase in my download/upload on the speedtest. Is there a reason for this?
Does the speed of my internet have an effect on how fast my wireless can transmit?
    Thanks!

People have been talking about how their internet speeds have increased dramatically with the use of the 5GHz option.
Unfortunately, they don't have the correct facts that they need. As John says, your Internet connection speed is limited by your ISP.  Even the slower 2.4 GHz "g" speed on your router is likely much faster than your Internet connection will allow, so having even higher speed capability with 5 GHz on your network buys you nothing as far as the Internet connection speed is concerned.
Simply stated, a router cannot "speed up" the Internet connection. That is controlled by your ISP. If you need faster Internet connection speeds, you need to check with your ISP about a faster....and more expensive....plan.
Where 5 GHz can help is on a local network between devices. Say, you want to copy a file from one computer to another, or from a computer to a hard drive over the wireless. In this case, 5 GHz will allow the data to transfer at a higher, faster rate than a 2.4 GHz connection.
The result is that it will take less time for the file transfer to occur using 5 GHz on your local network.

  • Airport Express (2nd gen): Radio Mode & Channel Set-Up

    Hello,
I am hoping somebody can help me with an Airport Express question.
I have recently purchased an Airport Express (2nd gen) and iPod Touch (4th gen) to stream music. I experience connectivity problems when my neighbour’s WiFi is turned on. When their WiFi is on my iPod rarely can detect the Base Station and when it does detect it - it cannot connect. The Airport Utility cannot detect the Base Station either when their WiFi is on. Yet when they are away and their WiFi isn’t turned on I have no problems and the system works absolutely perfectly.
I gather that I can change channels but I am looking for some advice on how to do this.
In work (because I can open the Airport Utility there –as there is no interference) I connect using the Airport Utility I have found the following options:
    Radio Mode:
5 GHz Mode:  Automatic mode, 802.11n (802.11a compatible) or 802.11n only (5 GHz Mode)
2.4GHz Mode: Automatic mode, 802.11n (802.11g/g compatible) or 802.11n only (5 GHz Mode)
    Radio Channel:
    5 GHz Channel: Automatic or four channels (36, 40, 44 or 48)
2.4GHz Mode: Automatic or choice of eleven channels
There are dozens of combinations using Radio Modes (5 or 2.4 GHz, manual or auto, 802.11a compatible) and Radio Channels (4 options using 5GHz and 11 options using 2.4 GHz).
Where should I start? Both radio mode manual and also manual channels? The possibilities seem endless!
    Can someone please help?
    Thank you.

    Hello, Tesserax,
My apologies if I have breeched community etiquette in asking for your advice.
I use a second generation Airport Express base station, Ethernet fed with category 6 cable, Radio Mode locked to 5 GHz for best data throughput, the station close to my iPad. The set up has improved YouTube video streaming performance significantly. No streaming freezing so far.
Are my base station's WiFi Settings are correct?
This is what I have done via iOS AirPort Utility -
Edit > Advanced  > WiFi Settings > 5 GHz Name: AirPort Lounge -
Radio Mode > Manual > Automatic Off > 5 GHz Mode > 802.11n only (5 GHz) > 802.11n only (5 GHz) ticked. Automatic off to allow access to 5 GHz only.
Radio Channel > Manual > Automatic On > 5 GHz Channel 149. Automatic on to allow switching between 5 GHz channels.
    Regards, Ken

  • Changing Radio Mode on an Airport Extreme (ac)

I have a 1st Generation Airport Extreme (802.11ac) the tower.
Using Airport Utility 6.3.1 there is no option available for changing the radio mode.
I have tried using the option key allowed me to open a summary window when clicking on the Edit Button, but not under any other circumstances.
(As an aside, when the summary window is open, you have a better way of tracking the AP clients)
I also have an Airport Express (802.11n 1st generation) Airport Utility 6.3.1 shows some additional radio modes and more with the option key pressed (see figure below)
If I use the Applescript kludge to open Airport Utility 5.6.1, I can get the options below, but there are some severe warnings that using this version of Airport Utility has a good chance of ruining your AirPort configuration.
Question 1: will using 5.6.1 really harm things?
Question 1a: is there someway of getting these to be available on Airport Utility 6.3.1
Question 2: is there any advantage to using any of these modes available using 5.6.1?
Question 3: Since I've shown that my Macbook will NOT switch to a different AP even though the signal strength from that AP is much weaker than another AP until I toggle my wireless on the Macbook on and off --- would any of these modes below help to solve that problem?
Question 4: Since the Airport Express (n) can use only one frequency, and the default option of 802.11a/n-802.1b/g uses the 2.4GHz wireless, is there an advantage to changing it's radio mode to use the 5GHz frequency?  Consider that the Airport Express (n) is primarily servicing an Apple TV.
    Thanks
Options on an Airport Express (n) using Airport Utility 6.3.1 with the option key pressed.

Using Airport Utility 6.3.1 there is no option available for changing the radio mode.
Apple has decided for you that you no longer need to change the Radio Mode from the Automatic setting if you have an 802.11ac router.
Question 1: will using 5.6.1 really harm things?
If you are referring to the 802.11ac products,  probably not, but it won't help either, and 5.6.1 is not supported with the 802.11ac AirPorts, so results may be unpredictable.  If you try to use a setting that is not present in the 6.x version of AirPort Utility, the settings will not "stick" on the 802.11ac product when try to update it.
Question 1a: is there someway of getting these to be available on Airport Utility 6.3.1
No, not if you are using an 802.11ac Apple router.
Question 3: Since I've shown that my Macbook will NOT switch to a different AP even though the signal strength from that AP is much weaker than another AP until I toggle my wireless on the Macbook on and off --- would any of these modes below help to solve that problem?
    No
Question 4: Since the Airport Express (n) can use only one frequency, and the default option of 802.11a/n-802.1b/g uses the 2.4GHz wireless, is there an advantage to changing it's radio mode to use the 5GHz frequency?  Consider that the Airport Express (n) is primarily servicing an Apple TV.
The AirPort Expess A1264 is a single band router. The Airport Express A1392 is a simultaneous dual band router. The default wireless setting of the A1264 Express is 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible)......not 802.11a/n -- 802.11b/g which is one of the settings available for the A1392 Express.
802.11n only 5 GHz is capable of faster speeds than the 2.4 GHz band, so in theory your connection might be faster.....but it will also be weaker, so you would want to have close to a line-of-sight relationship between the Express and Apple TV for 5 GHz to work well.  Unless you have an extremely fast Internet connection....higher than 150 Mbps.....5 GHz offers no advantage in that regard since your connection speed will be limited by your Internet connection plan.
If there are a number of other 2.4 GHz networks around you that might be interfering with your network, the 5 GHz option might be good choice since there are very few networks using that radio band....for now. That will all change very quickly in the next few years.
It could not hurt to try the 5 GHz option to see if you think it works better than 2.4 GHz. There are never any guarantees with wireless, so it is not possible to predict what the results might be until you actually try things out in your own home.

  • MacBook Air and problems with Time Capsule in 5GHz Radio Mode

We have our Time Capsule configured to 802.11n only (5 GHz). We've done this to work more efficiently in a particularly noisy wireless area. The problem is that the MacBook Air can't maintain a connection to it and when it loses the connection, the wireless interface seems to disappear from the Mac altogether - the wireless status indicator just shows an empty cone. The only solution is a restart. Sometimes it loses the connection after a couple of hours, sometimes within minutes, though it always goes eventually. All other machines on the network are fine, and switching the Time Capsule to 802.11n only (2.4 GHz) solves the problem, though there's a lot of noise at that frequency and our network performance as a whole suffers.
I know there's similar threads around dealing with the MBA and wireless issues (I've tried all the solutions vaguely related, e.g. deleting and recreating the wireless interface), though none that deal with this specific problem, which I'm convinced is caused by the radio mode of the Time Capsule.
All software / firmware is the latest:
MacBook Air 10.5.2 Wireless Card Firmware Veriosn Broadcom BCM43xx 1.0 (4.170.46.5)
    Time Capsule Version 7.3.1
I was hoping the recent firmware updates would sort this... any one else running a Time Capsule in 5GHz mode with a MacBook Air?

I'm running my TC in 5ghz mode with my MBA. My original problem was the lack of signal strength coming from my AEBS caused the MBA to have a slow connection. There are a number of pipes in the wall that separates the two rooms where my MBA lives and the AEBS is.
So, I hard wired the TC to the AEBS and placed the TC in the room where my MBA lives most of the time. Now that the signal strength is really good I'm not having any issues.
