Radius tool

Ok I don't know what I'm doing wrong but sure it is something. When I use the radius tool in photoshop elements to fix hair I use the refine radius tool and instead of adding the hair that was missed after using the quick selection tool it takes away. And no i'm not using the erase brush I'm using the top one. When I use the tool it shows the hair missed as i'm going over it with the brush but when I release it,  it took away hair??? and I worked only on the edge of the hair that would need put back. When I tried the erase refinement tool it put back what the refine tool took away....Can someone tell me what I am doing wrong.  thank you

Have you tried using the contrast slider in conjunction with the refine tool? See if this video tutorial helps:

  • When extracting hair, the Refine Radius Tool is grayed out in Photoshop cc

Maybe they've changed the process for the Refine Radius Tool but my version of cc does not allow me to further refine the extraction.

Hi Ron.  Yes you can adjust the brush size with the square brackets.  I use the express wheel on my Intuos 4.  But more importantly, I don't think there is any reason why Refine Radius would be greyed out from a usser error point of view.  You could try resetting your preferences by restarting Photoshop while holding down the Shift Alt Ctrl (Shift Opt Cmd) keys.  But it could also be a video driver problem.  Go to the card makers site and make sure you have the very latest driver for it.
Do you have a tablet?  I sometimes have a sticky brush problem with mine, and have to tap the stylus on the tablet to free it up.  That could cause problems with brush size, but I doubt it would cause the Refine edge button to be grey out.
What OS btw?  Is it Windows 8?  There seem to be a few people with video driver problems with Windows 8 and CC

  • Photoshop CS5 Refine Radius tool not working

Hi, I'm following along the Classroom in a Book CS5 Photoshop book and when I try to use the Refine Radius tool in the Refine Mask dialog box and try to paint with it to refine the edges of the black hair model, the paint strokes do not hold. The painting works but then the action is basically undone. Followed all the instructions to a T, but saw the same problem when I tried it on another photography yesterday too.
Any tips as what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks but no. It's not the spacebar. The handtool works fine in Illustrator

  • Photoshop refine edge radius tool will not turn on

I've used the poligimal, magnetic, and good old lasso tools as well as both the magic wand and the quick selection tool and for some reason when I select the Refine Edge tool everything is selectable and workable EXCEPT the eraser and refine radius tool. (photo proof)
I'm assuming I changed a setting somewhere because it was working fine before, but I have no idea what to check.
    1) I restarted the compuer
    2) I selected reset tools  then
    3) reset all tools
    4) I've tried every combination of tools to see if I was limited to one means of lassoing the pic
    5) I've opened various types of pics
All in all, I get that darned little icon which will not let me refine the edge any further.
    Any suggestions?

I've tried it with every combination I can think of. On, off; maximum settings on various sliders to nothing. I just tried it again and I still get the same round pointer with the circle and slash through it, meaning I can't use the tool.

  • Refine Radius Tool Results Offset

When I attempt to use the refine radius tool on a current project, it's correctly getting a good mask result, except it's offsetting the results by about 20-30 pixels below where it should. The project is very large, retouching an image over 8,000 pixels on the long edge, working in 16-bit ProRGB with an Intuous 3 tablet on Photoshop CC/Mac. The tool is working correctly on other images. With this file I have been floating between the system described before and a Windows-based Photoshop CS6. Maybe the file is corrupted somehow but I've tried resaving as a new file name and reducing the size of the image with no fix.
Any thoughts what might be happening?
    Before Before w/MaskAfter w/Mask

Glad you got it working with the TIF.  It may be moot, but I would suspect there is something corrupted with that particular file, possibly a small error related to image size or channel origin. Once a file is corrupted, this would explain why the problem is happening on other systems, and also why it only happens with this file.
I've never seen this particular error before, so don't worry about it too much. Sometimes stuff just happens.  :+)
You might want to run Disk Utility on the originating system, and see if your hard drive needs repair. I also highly recommend Disk Warrior and Onyx (in that order) once a month.

  • When using refine radius tool my selection remains light in color

I am trying to replace a back ground on a photo and am trying to select hair, leaves in trees etc. by using the refine radius tool. After brushing over the area, the selection, remains greyed out (very light) in color as though I have an opacity setting some where for this selection. Any ideas

Hi 99jon I have been watching some tutorials where they open the refine edge mini window, select (W) white background then activate the Refine Radius Tool (E) then brush those areas which weren't selected completely i.e. hair or leaves on trees. The brush (E) is meant to bring those items hair, leaves into the main selection. When I do this the portion that I brush over remains very light in color, as though I have an opacity setting on say 50%. The tutorials dont use the red mask at all, allthough I have tried this. The brush, for some reason doesn't ADD to the main selection

  • Refine mask - radius tool size shortcut ?

    hi
i have a question about radius tool in refine mask
is there a shortcut to increase or decrease the size of the "brush"
on the toolbar the preset is locked -> screenshot
i can increase the size moving the mouse over size and increase & decrease
i tried a shotcut to increase / drease the size of the radius tool
in the edit->keyboard shortcut there is not items
    thanks

I use a Wacom for that type of work, so don't really use the short cut tools as it is easier with a pen in my hand to just use the slide bar, BUT, I did hear in a "Lynda" video...there's a great one, though I'm still having issues with the refine tool on hair....it loses depth of color and goes almost gray....the part I'm trying to define....Anywhooooo.....I believe she said the left and right bracket bars.  Excellent tutorial and on this site.    Hope this helps and hope I remember correctly as don't use it!

  • Refine Radius Tool Not Working (Circle with slash symbol)

When I make a selection and move to refine edge options to use the refine radius tool it simply does not allow it and gives me this circle with slash symbol.
I tried resetting the tool and reinstalling photoshop.  The tool worked a few months ago but it just doesnt now.  Any ideas?

You need to uncheck Show original.

  • I'm working in Photoshop CC 2014. Why is it that when I use the refine radius tool...edges become pixelated? When using Edge Detection and sliding the radius bar I get the same result.

I used the quick selection tool to get this far...I will be showing the result of adjusting the Radius slider...
At 5 px you can already see the changes to the edges...
    And at 30 px...

I've looked at this several times now, but it has me stumped! I just can't think of circumstances that might cause this.  The firs thing to try when things are properly weird is to reset Preferences (I don't think there is a reset option for refine Edge).
    Reset Preferences
Windows — Hold down Shift Ctrl Alt immediately after starting Photoshop
Mac — Hold down Shift Cmd Opt immediately after starting Photoshop
I'd be interested to see the original image.

  • Edge detection, Refine Radius tool not apparently working

    Dear Community,
I hope you can help me, this is the first time I have asked a question.  I have been struggling with the tricky selection of blowing hair and I have read and tried many tutorials but not it's not working for me.  I must be doing something wrong.
I have a Mac desktop running Photoshop CS6.  I have tried editing both RAW files and JPEGs, and switched between 8 and 16 bit but no apparent differences.
    My method:-
    1) Edit file in Photoshop and use the quick selection tool for a rough selection of girl on the right.
    2) Then click on the Refine Edge button at the top menu bar and in the menu box, I tick Smart Radius, set it to 12 px, tick decontaminate colours and set 50%.  This is when I am told the magic should happen.  I then paint the hairs top right of screen against the blue sky with brush size approx. 70/80 px and paint on the small hairs near her right eye.  But if you look close the selection gets worse by doing this. I included White on Black to show the messy grey area near her right eye and hair is not coming out clean white top and top right.
    3) I have put a new layer in and filled red to show the end result but not what I would have hoped for.  You can see the messy area above her right eye and lack of clarity in the hair top right.
I have tried to reset Photoshop preferences in case any issues.  Any help would be massively appreciated, as I just can't think what I am doing wrong ?  e.g. is it to do with brush type settings ?
    Many Thanks
    Mark

Refine Edge is a game changer, but it is not fool proof, and not even particularly intuitive.  It took me a while to get to grips with it, and there are frequently times when a dual masking approach is needed.  An easy fix is to click on Decontaminate Colors, because that automatically changes the output mode to New layer with layer mask.  That puts you straight into a situation where you can repair problems using the layer mask.  Something a lot of people don't realise is that you still have full access to the normal masking aid when painting in a Layer mask.  For instance, you can use the pen tool to outline the soft edge, Ctrl click the resulting workpath in the Paths panel to load it as a selection, and use that select as an aid to pain in the soft edge with black.  Then invert the selection and paint out the overspill with white.
Something else you can do before you use Quick Select is to copy the layer and increase the contrast.  Use the modified layer to make the selection, and switch back to the normal layer to action the selection.  You can increase the contrast ob both tonal values with Curves or levels, or colour with Hue saturation. In your example using a H/S layer and selecting Reds from the RGB dropdown, would let you increase saturation for just the reds.  Refine Edge uses both tone and color information, so this can make a big difference.
Personally, I just Output to new layer with layer mask and fix it with the paint brush.

  • Refine Edge Radius Tool Not working

    Hi
Today my refine edge is not working, although it used to work. When I select with the quick selection tool and click refine edge, when I pick the radius to smooth it out ,it makes a strange thing
    Please Help
I made a screenshot for the screen,Note  this is still, although I change anything in the Refine Edge Options
    thnx in advance

I ran into the same problem using the image you posted. Although there was something not right about the edge sharpness and color density where the car met the white surround I was able to get the result you are after.
    This was the sequence:
    1.  Toss the Background layer lock in the trash. It becomes Layer 0
    2.  Cmd + new layer symbol to place a blank layer below Layer 0
Then, Edit > Fill the blank layer with white
3, Choose Layer 0 and use the Quick Selection tool to select the car
    4. Choose Refine Edge in the Options bar:
View Mode > View Mode > Marching Ants
Brush Size (Options Bar): 200  This is humongous and counter-inuititve, but hang in there.
         Radius 0, Smart Radius
Paint the white area keeping the + marker a fair distance from the marching ants
Output: Decontaminate colors (50) New Layer with Layer Mask
The result is a vastly improved result but the mask is a bit weak in the troubled area. sL
Option click on the the mask in the Layers panel to reveal the mask
Curves > Move straight line of Curve to increase contrast via black endpoint
I think the root of the problem is the lack of edge sharpness in the image. Using Refine Edge when the edge is soft can be pain.

  • Problem with Refine Mask (Edge) Tool (+Refine Radius Brush)

    Hey all,
I'm a teacher at Vancouver Film School in Canada.
Having some major problems with the Refine Mask tool in Photoshop CS5 (+5.1)
Especially when using the Decontaminate colours check box.
    it eliminates smart objects
it leaves artifacting (especially in areas where I use the Refine Radius tool.) see posted image
these are consistent problems. When I uncheck decontaminate colours, the artifacting doesn't happen and smart objects stay in tact.
Is anyone else having problems with this?
    Also having this problem
sometimes the radius will only increase INSIDE the selection  and not in the center like it should. This is the most frustrating  because it's not consistent but happened on 4 systems yesterday while teaching a class.

    Hi Notsosimpleton,
You most likely already know this stuff.
I have been experimenting with two images with Photoshop.  I agree that masking is a non destructive method of editing your image, but when you choose to use the decontaminate color option the refine edge feature automatically changes from new mask to new layer with mask indicating that the decontamination is destructive.
Smart objects by there nature prevent pixel level modification. From my (general) understanding of the decontaminate color feature, Photoshop is attempting to replace edges which contain colors from the non selected area with colors from the selected area, in turn your smart object needs to be rasterized to allow this process to take place.  This then creates artificating because Photoshop is painting on to edges with color, leaving undesired rubbish around your selection. The majority of this is hidden by the mask.
Changing your selection method or using clone stamp with the blend mode set to color and replace edges using selections from inside the selection area.  Affectively doing what Photoshop would do, but manually.
I am not sure this really helps?, but I always try using other masking methods to achieve the result i.e. channels, paths.  I would be happy to experiment and share the results.

  • Photoshop Refine Edge Tool questions

I made a Quick Selection of a person and am using the Refine Edge tool with the goal of extracting the person from the image so I can place her somewhere else.
I set the Smart Radius box, and Radius to about 2, smoothness to about 9, and then I take the Refine Radius tool. I start brushing around the edges of the hair to add missing strands to the selection.
1.) When brushing around the head, should the + that is in the middle of the brush be brushing on the very edge of the hair? Should it be touching both the edge of the hair and the background? How does it work best?
2.) Do you only want to use the Refine Radius tool over areas of hair? What else does it work well with?
    Thanks.

Quick Select and Refine Edge are one the biggest game changers in recent Photoshop history IMHO.  They make it so quick and easy to make complex selections, anyone can start making amazing composites, but Refine Edge just isn't as intuitive a tool to use as some of the tutorials make it out to be.  Not even close, and I am not surprised that people have problems with it.  Next time you Google up a tutorial ob Refine Edge, take into account the clean white background they are starting with, and then go find a tutorial that uses a busy background.
Hair is fine.  You can't do fine with lots of smoothing and feathering.  Smoothing is going to tame jagged edges, and feathering is going to make the edges soft.  Hair won't survive that.   If you have a busy background, then there's a good chance you are not going to get a good selection.  That's why the Martin Evening tutorial I recommended is so good, because it is a lot truer to real life than most, and it lets you fine tune the selection to wherever you are going to composite it onto.

  • Photoshop Elements Help | Using tools to make selections

This question was posted in response to the following article: http://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop-elements/using/making-selections.html

I'm trying to make a straight-edged rectangular selection with the Polygonal Lasso tool and I end up with an oval.  Feathering is at 0.  In Refine Edge everything is set to 0, and I've played around with the View Mode and Define Radius tool, neither of which I understand, but I keep getting an oval.
How do I get straight edges which, gee, I thought this tool was supposed to do and which it's done the past 4 years I've been using it, until now.  And what it does - make an oval - why would anyone want that?

  • Elliptical Marquee Tool Blurring in Refine Edge

    Hi.
I crop images out of their background, then save them on a white background. I use the quick selection, polygonal lasso, and elliptical marquee tools to select the item.
Recently, when I've finished selecting the item, and I click on refine edge, any part of the image that I used the elliptical marquee tool to select is blurred. The rest of the image is fine. I've been using the tools this way for a few years, and this just started happening recently. I have no idea what, if anything, I did to cause this, and I haven't been able to figure out how to straighten it out.
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Noah.

There is a tutorial on the creative cloud about the refine radius tool in the refine edge dialog UI that I can not follow somewhere on planet earth can you help me?
