RAID 0 Questions - advice needed

I am stepping up to a new BTO Mac Pro (2.8Ghz with 8GB third-party RAM) and considering the Apple RAID Card vs. Software RAID. I have a few questions regarding RAID 0 on the startup volume and hardware vs. software RAID. I am a graphic designer and running Adobe CS3 and working often with pretty large files.
1. Does RAID 0 on a startup volume offer any performance boost if working data is on another volume? Does the working volume need to be in RAID 0 or RAID 5 to reap the performance beneftis. This is a point I am not entirely clear on yet.
2. I understand the risks of running RAID 0, especially on a startup volume. Any advice on whether or not this offers any real world performance boost?

Would a single Raptor offer similar results. Or better yet, would a partial-stroked 500GB SATA II disk offer the same results as a single Raptor at a fraction of the cost, without the RAID 0 risks?
2. Is a hardware RAID card (i.e. the Apple RAID Card or better yet, the new CalDigit RAID Card for less $$$) a better option than software RAID (either Apple or SoftRAID)? With a RAID 0 startup volume and a RAID 1 pair for storage, will hardware RAID offer any performance gains? Or would a single startup volume with a 3-disk RAID 5 storage volume be a better option (I know RAID 5 is not possible with software RAID).
3. Any advice/feedback on the Apple RAID Card? I have read some horror stories about battery charging, at least initially. I have not seen much about the strange recharge cycle which apparently can cripple your machine for days every 3 months. The new CalDigit RAID card appears to be very promising. Supports the 4 internal drive bays as well as external drives, which the Apple card does not.

I usually avoid linking to other forums, but in this case, there is a similar discussion over on MacNN forum setting up a Mac Pro to use RAID.
Apple RAID software has continued to improve. The difference in performance between Apple and SoftRAID has narrowed to the point both are excellent. SoftRAID though alerts you on any I/O time out or read/write errors, and use a stripped read which is nice, when or where it is needed.
I've never stopped upgrading and trying to improve on performance. The trick is not everyone can go out and spend $800 for a drive case and controller plus another $500 on disk drives for an external setup, and buy 3-6 drives for the existing SATA ports.
Rather than buying the fastest, I bought some 160GB RE WD drives, cheap, good for RAID, and planned to use those as the base. Then got the 320GB model. Then bought WD RE2 500GB $115 ea , which seems to be a nice price and still does nicely, optimized for writes. That means I can do some mix-and-matching.
Some can take their existing SATA drives to get started. And probably has some drives that can be used for backups and such.

4) Does anyone know any specific settings or configurations I can do to the Audigy 2 ZS in order to perform it's best in World of Warcraft?

The latest Creative drivers will uninstall previous drivers before installing the newer one, so it is done automatically. The update you are refering to, is also applicable to the ZS, because it says Audigy 2/4 series. However, you only need the update if you are using the DVD Audio Player, if not then it is useless. (It is actually a newer version of the DVD Audio Player, compatible with the newer drivers)

Confirmation question - advice needed

Hi would just like some confirmation before i buy an airport express and can't seem to find this question directly answered.
Ok i have a cable modem that runs into the WAN port of a linksys router - which then connects up two pc's using standard RJ45 connections to the routers LAN ports. The pc's are static (immobile) and happy with the RJ45 connections
I also have a powerbook and have to connect an RJ45 from the router to use the Internet etc, but i want to be able to move around with the laptop. All pretty straightforward so far.
What i want to know is if I can take the RJ45 from teh router that was going to my mac and plug it into an airport express and then connect from the mac using wireless to the airport which is linked to the router?
I dont want the airport to do any routing or anything as there will only be one mac connecting via wireless and the Linksys router is handing out static IP address;s to the 3 machines on the network.
I just want it to pass the signal from my static - IP addressed mac to the main router without interfering - the Linksys Router is configured to portforward to the static IP address on the Mac so all the airport would do is bridge the wireless gap from router to my mac.
I assume i can do this but would just like to confirm. Please let me know if this is not the case. Thx

To elaborate on David's reply, you can turn off the router that's built into the Express (by turning off "Distribute IP addresses" using Airport Admin Utility) so that the unit acts as a simple Ethernet-to-wireless bridge. In fact, I have an Express doing exactly that, connected to a wired D-Link router. In addition, I have a second Express extending the range of the first and providing AirTunes streaming to my stereo.

Creative G500 5.1 Questions **(Advice Needed)!**!

How are these speakers compared to the Logitech Z-5500 5.1
I've been looking into purchasing the Creative G500's, but i've always wanted to know how's the Sound Quality and Bass on these speakers? Are these speakers good for Hip-Hop/Rap music and also Instrumental music? How's the low bass on these speakers?
I can purchase the Creative G500 for $200 brand new from a friend, but just wondering how's the Quality compared to other 5.1 speakers thats alittle more expensive?

you can connect your computer/audioplayer trough analog stereo and analog surround sound but not digital sound(most used by new game consoles and DVD)

What kind of wireless card do you have in your computer? wireless g? wireless n?
The first question you need to decide is this: Do you want a wired network or a wireless network?
Advantages of a wired network:
Easier to setup and maintain.
Better security.
In some cases, faster speeds.
Cheaper.
All your network devices (computers, printers, etc.) must be wired to the router. In some cases, this means you must run a cable through your walls.
Advantages of a wireless network:
Your computer can connect to the Internet wirelessly, so you can move about your home or apartment without needing an Internet wire connected to your computer.
If your computer and router are in different rooms you can connect them wirelessly (you usually do not need to run a network cable through your walls).
Your network devices can connect to the router by wire or wirelessly.
So, do you want a wired network or a wireless network?
Also, since you are just starting out, I would suggest you go to Linksys.com , to the "Learning Center" and take some of the tutorials. This will help you understand some of the basics of networking.

1z0-051 Certification - Advice Needed

Hello Guys,
I have been reading, learning and practicing Oracle 11g SQL Fundamentals for the last 3 months and finally ready to take up the Exam 1z0-051 by October 15th 2009.
The only book I used: OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051)
Version I practiced: Oracle 11g (Practiced almost using the SQL Developer and not the SQL*Plus)
Samples Questions I worked on: I got access to Skillport's 1z0-051 Testprep course (Sponsored by my Company).
I feel confident enough but then I would like to hear from the ones who already passed this exam.
Are there any other material or samples questions I need to work or concentrate on?
How would you rate the exam from a beginner's perspective. (When I say beginner, I mean a person with just 6 month experience in Oracle Database.) Is the exam dead easy or moderate or really difficult?

If your performing adequately on the questions with OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051) and I believe you've put in lots of practice besides then its probably time to have an actual exam attempt.
Certainly you seem to be on the approach advocated by [http://blogs.oracle.com/certification/2009/05/the_route_you_choose.html]
I personally, and I accept people are different, feel that from once I feel I have an 80% chance of passing then I need to have a shot at the exam simply because if I fail I'd be in a better mindset to attempt a retry.
There are additional tests you can buy from the authorirized providers ( [OCA Oracle Database 11g SQL Fundamentals I Exam Guide (Exam 1Z0-051)] ) or you can get additional practice tests from the Sybex book.
I must admit I value practice tests like golddust; the second time I attempt the a practice question I may remember the answer so I always like to leave a practice tests late into my revision cycle and if possible to take the last one (or two) just before I go for the exam.
But IMHO I think you've put a lot of commendable effort into studying and its worth having a go at the exam. Take usual exam advice, my chemistry tutor used to say If all else fails read the question ... Dont be thrown off course if the first few questions throw you and be aware of the time remaining; there is no point running out of time and not attempting an answer to all questions. You mave the option of marking questions for special review. And the ones you can answer correcctly do so; quickly double check your answer, and move on; on dwell on it ... the time will be beter spend elsewhere. Exam technique only comes to most moere mortals with practice.

Msi k2n9 diamond raid problems/questions

Hi, yesterday I bought 2 hard drives western digital 1 TB Caviar Blue 32mb cache each and wanted to make a raid stripe array, so they work as one and are twice as fast.
I had problems installing windows XP, so I tried windows 7. It detected the raid array, partitioned it, and installed the windows, but in the device manager I got other devices -> RAID Controller and no drivers for it. I also have a Coprocessor, but that may be the chipset drivers, that I didn't install yet.
The windows 7 is currently installed on the array, but I can't really see the performance difference. All disk information tools say it's currently 32 cache, shouldn't it be 64? And the speed is the same ~ 40-60 mb/s copy rate, 100mb/s sata-sata transfer rate.
With windows XP I tried installing the extra drivers from the web site from a floppy drive during installation, but the installation didn't detect the array at all.
Can somebody give me a clue how to fix my problem? And if you have any idea what software can I use to check the raid transfer rate and proper performance?

well i misplaced the numbers, it's k9n2, it's not that big mistake, and I know my system well. I have two disks, but one array, and i think the cache must be 2x, because the idea of raid 0, simultaneously writing bits on both disks. The logical idea is that if you write something to e drive with 32 mb cache you will be able to write the same thing on two drives with 32 mb cache each which makes it 64 mb
The coprocessor part is solved, after I installed the chipset drivers, but the raid thing is still there.

Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

Raid 5 Questions

My company is finally committed to making the jump into the HD pool. We're going to make the first upgrade in the storage department, since everything else we can rent for the time being. We edit corporate video shot on DVCPRO HD. I know that firewire 800 is technically fast enough to handle DVCPRO HD, but for future proofing I want to go esata. It seems that Raid 5 is the best combo as far as backup and value. My questions are as follows:
Will disk utility stripe to raid 5, or do I have to get a tower that will stripe to raid 5 using it's own hardware / software? I am running tiger and can't find an option to stripe raid 5 in disk utility. Does Leopard offer this, or perhaps third party software? Or is raid 5 only configured via hardware on the drive tower itself?
What towers have people been using successfully? I would like it to have at least 4 drive bays.
What type of esata card will work well with a Quad G5 (which uses the PCI express slots)?
Of course, if I'm way off the mark and there is a better solution for my storage needs I'm open to suggestion. I know there is a raid 6, but couldn't find any towers that supported it during my search.

Any kind of esata box and card can do disk utility raid 0, all you need just make sure is the performance. it has to be sustained. http://www.AJA.com has speed software to check the data rate.
Be aware that you might lose performance if choosing a software-based RAID 5.
it's entirely possible that you max out your resource in order to edit HD and maintain software RAID 5.
For a hardware RAID, I would 2nd to CalDigit's HDPro.
If you only need a 4-bay raid and want to use your own drives, take a look at caldigit's RAID card or Apple RAID card. Both are pretty inexpensive.
You are able to use 4 to 16 drives with caldigit RAID card, so they pretty much have all the systems that will fit your needs, the raid card or hdpro.
Good luck with the new RAID and let us know how it works. Storing all the data in a good hardware RAID without worrying about losing them is very stress relieving.

Does anyone know if there's a way to change the questions themselves? (Frankly, they have to be the most ridiculous security questions I've ever seen. A good security question should be one that you'll have no problem remembering the answer to, even if you're asked years later. To answer one from the third batch, I'd have to make something up, which makes it unlikely I'll remember the answer later. And I certainly don't want to have to write the answers down somewhere.)

Thank you Klaus1.The large font, I copied and pasted from my mail box.I'm visually impaired...not to a huge degree but it helps to use the large font.I believe you are right about the copyright on the imac stuff but if facebook decide otherwise, you have to reply electronically to their challenge.If you can't provide a reference directly from the copyright owner then they remove the video.I believe this is a programmed response and no human is involved which now makes it impossible for me to get my video uploading restored.They detect added soundtrack automatically and then challenge.There are many others in the same boat and facebook will not communicate.They have various discussion sites on which I have left messages including Mark Zuckerbergs own facebook but I don't think anyone from facebook ever reads them.I intend to start a second facebook which I can use purely to get my videos uploaded as a lot of my friends enjoy them BUT don't want fall foul of their programming again.If only iMac would put something on the net to this effect.I think it is so unfair that with modern technology it is impossible to contact these large conglomerates personally and receive an email response.I tried emailing [email protected] but I got a failure notice.If you have any ideas on how to get verification from apple direct, I would be very grateful.Thank You.

Questions/conditions/needs related to the PBX

I act on behalf of my boss who is planning a larger IT investment, but needs some background information.
So far, we used an open-source free PBX, but after we've recognised its deficiencies, we decided to buy a commercial product.
To tell the truth, we hesitate between some products, and we need some confirmations related to the concerned PBXs. One of them is Cisco.
So our questions/conditions/needs are as follows:
The PBX needs to be an IP PBX.
Basic PBX features that we need: conferencing, video calling, voicemail, call queuing, IVR.
The type of all the desktop phone we use is Grandstream GXP 2000. The PBX should be compatible with this device.
We have a special corporate VoIP SIP phone ("softphone") developed by Ozeki's third party SDK. I am confident that we will continue to use this SDK, so the PBX should be compatible with this software.
And the last one: we would like to use Android smartphones as the part of our telephone system, so the PBX should support mobile extensions.
Please indicate if there is a solution that fulfills the above requirements. If so, please suggest me the proper product/service here or send me an e-mail to [email protected]

Advice needed on buying iphone as gift

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?
My brother birthday is coming soon, I need above advice urgently.

Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.
