RAID 0 Roaming Disk Problem -  Way To Recover?

I have the problem generally described in this archieved thread [RAID 0|discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2041271&tstart=-3] and will describe it below, the thread is more for point of reference.
A few days ago the RAID went down (RAID 0)along the same lines described in this thread [RAID Error|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2141573&tstart=0]
which in a nutshell, threw this error
Drive 3:5000cca349e4743d missing - Replace immediately or acknowledge loss of RAID set RS1 and associated volumes.
I immediatelly pulled out all the hard drives and cloned them in external hardware enclosures. At that point none of the drives had a fail message. During putting the drives back in I noticed that a drive sled looked slightly warped and would not fit back in properly. When the sled was in the drive would not show up, although two of the drives appeared as "roaming."
Got new sleds, and put the drives in. Could not get it the machine to boot in Safe Mode or properly from an external drive which was hooked up via Firewire (This was the system drive at the time of the freeze. It showed up as bootable when holding down the option key) or the clone of that system when placed in the machine. (I was on the phone for awhile with Apple Tach Support, and by the end it seemed it was a RAID card issue.) So I made an appointment for the Apple Genius Bar. I pulled out the old system drive with data, images and the rest and did a bare bones install of 10.5.1 (which came with the machine) and rebooted before bringing it into the Store, and the computer booted fine.
The "problem" RAID set was paritioned into two volumes. On my reboot after the install of the OS (and without using the RAID Utility to change anything, the RAID drives were simply in their bays), the two volumes are still there, sort of, as R2V1 and R2V2. Additionally all the drives SMART Status and RAID status are fine. One of the three drives is roaming however,
was and is being reported as RS1. Additionally, each of the drives in the RAID reports SMART status as fine, and each of the three drives report a RAID status of good. Additionally the RAID 0 had two volumes and both are reported currently as R2V1 and R2V2 and as being "good" and one of the drives has status of roaming. This is the furthest I have gotten trying to save this. I did not want to shut down the machine on the off chance that there is something else I can do right now before bringing the machine into the store.
The following pictures may make it easier to follow

The tower is an Early 2008 tower and I upgraded the firmware on the RAID card with the newest firmware, which required 10.5.8. The base install is back to 10.5.1 on the reboot after reinstall. I am also waiting to hear back from tech support.
Didn't realize the Apple RAID Card had a bad rep until this happened. Sheesh. Missed that one
But if there is anything to try right now, it would be great.

Good luck.

I know that I have been pretty happy, and when I did lose one drive, it did what it was supposed to do.
I did have it RAID 5 at one point, but set it up for internal RAID 0 for the renders, and it has been fine for a long time. Urgh.
Early on, there were battery warnings all the time, and the battery did not charge unless the Mac was ON, which was totally stupid.
Hmmm, sounds alot like mine there.
I found that out two Christmas vacations ago when we do our two-week shutdown.
Came back in, and could not use the Mac for two days while it charged.
They've since changed it, and thankfully, it's been good since.
Good luck, let us know how the new card works out.
SB
Thanks again and will do. Bought a bunch more hard drives and if it comes back, the first thing I do is back up the 2+ Terrabytes plus of renders (all ongoing projects), slap new drives into the tower, make it RAID 5 and to heck with the hit on speed. Have enough externals to reconfigure things, now just keeping fingers crossed

  • RAID question (disk problem?) on K9A2 Platinum

This may be a newbie question but I just can't figure this out.
I have been getting hard stops and upon restart I am told my RAID array is critical or rebuilding.  Sometimes W7 will restart normally when I pick that, most times I have to go through some sort of restore routine.  I have reloaded my video drivers (ATI Catalyst) no difference.  Diskeeper indicates that the HD is critical and badly fragmented.
How do I tell which of my two disks is bad without cracking the case, unplugging one at a time and trying to reboot?  When I go into the Fatbuild utility both drives appear to have the same number.
    Thanks

Frankly, once the remote HDs are plugged in they will probably stay that way.  I just want faster backups.  If I go the AHCI route, presumably I have to enable the Promise controller for the eSATA ports.  Remember reading here that the K9A2 Promise controller runs the eSATA ports.  Is that correct.

Well, your profile info says 10.4.11, and you are posting your question in the iMac (PPC) category.  If you are running Snow Leopard, it must be a fairly recent Intel iMac.
In that case, you should definitely post your question here
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard
where other Snow Leopard users can see your question.  Restate the problem, what error messages you get, and what you have tried already (for trouble-shooting).

  • Is there any way to recover a disk's catalog directory after a Quick Erase?

A disk's data directory seems to me to be the most vulnerable Achilles's Heel to protecting data.
With the 1 click of an accidental quick erase and format via Disk Utility, the roadmap to potentially multiple terabytes of data gets erased.
Even if zero data files were overwritten and all of the data files get recovered, (please, please correct me if I'm wrong) data recovery software can't retrieve the filenames, folder names, and the organizational, hierarchical structure, which then can only be painstakingly rebuilt by hand.
Relative to the size of the data, the directory is tiny. Wouldn't recovering a backup of the directory (that should always be automatically made as a fail-safe whenever an erase/format is done) make complete recovery fast and easy?
This seems waaayyyy too obvious to be overlooked, but everything I read indicates that with 1 click, it's gone and can't be recovered!
Is there any way to recover a disk's catalog directory after a Quick Erase?

    This is not accurate.
The catalog on an erased disk may be recoverable - you need to use the correct software to look for it & repair it. SSD's will make this more difficult because of how the controller operates on the drive reallocating & overwriting entire chunks without any external way to override that but spinning disks should still have the potential for recovery. If you have more dollars than sense (e.g. 3 letter agencies) you could apparently use advanced techniques to undo layers of magnetic changes - magnetic force microscopy is meant to be able to do this, but I have only seen it discussed as theory, never demonstrated.
Tools like TestDisk may be able to rebuild the original partition structure, from there you could try tools like Disk Warrior to reconstruct the catalog, which could potentially recover the file & folder names. I'm generalising here because I haven't done this on HFS+ (at least as far as I can remember ), I have done comparable things on Linux ext3 volumes. HFS+ has similar features (like a built in backups of the volumes structures).
You seem to be concocting a solution that seems weird to me - saving a backup disk catalog when erasing a disk entirely defeats the point of erasing (unless the backup should be saved to another physical disk).
You agreed to erase the disk - the error here is yours (sorry for being blunt, but you shouldn't really expect Apple to account for uncommon user mistakes). Frankly people shouldn't be editing disks when there are non backed up volumes connected but sometimes it's a hard lesson to learn.
If you have a backup running file recovery on a deleted volume is irrelevant - you would always be better off replacing from a copy, 'file carving' or data recovery is likely to bring back old files which were not erased & not in the last catalog, potentially polluting the result.
If you don't know how to recover & have erased data that you really need recovered take it to a professional company, it is the best option by far. Using & attempting to repair can lose more data as Kappy noted.
There are many other drawbacks with HFS+ that should probably be addressed before this e.g. data is not verified to be the identical as when it was originally stored to disk.
If you really don't like the filesystem limitations use an alternative like ZFS on a server, that has many extra features that better at protecting what is saved. Other systems also manage file duplication for redundancy & data verification etc.
Mac OS Extended is all we have that is fully supported on OS X for booting & all common tasks, so ask Apple to address you concerns http://apple.com/feedback/ but I'm not sure it makes sense for other users.

  • HP Pavilion dm1 4020 sd Hard Disk problem

    Hi
I've a problem with the hard disk of my pavilion dm1.
At the beginning I had problme with the whole system that started blocking from time to time.
windows just froze, all the system just forze and there was no way to recover.
After gettign annoyed I just resotred factory settings and the os from scratch.
The new os is now working but if I try a scandisk on the C: drive, it happend the same, the scandisk just stops after a while at stpe 5 of 5 and never finish.
So I'm starting thinking that thare is some hard disk failure, bad sector or so that froze the notebook, the same can have caused all of the issues I had before, when the disk had more data and maybe that specific sector was used by system files.
how can I check recover from this error?
    Thanks

    Hi,
The 303 error code is a failure of the short Disk Self Test ( DST ) and would indicate that the Hard Drive is failing and needs to be replaced.  This is also consistent with the 'freezing' issue.
If your notebook is still under warranty, contact HP and arrange to have the drive replaced - you can check your warranty status Here.
If you live in the US, contact HP Here.
If you are in another part of the world, start Here.
If you are out of warranty and would like a guide on replacing the Hard Drive yourself, please let me know.

  • My disk0s2 cannot be repaired.  Is there a way to recover files on my computer?

My computer had a spinning wheel yesterday that would not go away, so I forced a shutdown (had done it before with no problems).  However, now my computer goes straight to the diagnostic tool, and when I try to repair disk0s2, it cannot be repaired.  I didn't have Time Machine automatically running, and my most recent backup is too old and I don't want to lose all of our pictures.   I'm desperate here - is there any other way to recover files off of this disk?
My MacBook pro is only 2 years old so this came as a surprise.  I've scheduled an appointment at the Apple Store but I'm seeing if there is anything I can do to help now...
    -Drew

Try using a data recovery product such as the ones listed here. Don't write anything else to the drive until the files are recovered or you choose not to recover them.

  • Raid with disk utility

    Hi there
I have an odd setup, however let me explain the whole situation.
I recently bought 2 external firewire drives with the idea of setting up a raid mirror so i could backup all my data safely.
However, it appears I cannot plug both drives into my mac at the same time using firewire, or they drop off the mac. I have read some other forums and found that you need to plug each drive on a different firewire card. As my G4 has only the one set of ports this is not possible without buying an additional pci card.
However they support usb as well. I can plug one drive in as firewire and the other via the usb at the same time fine, but now cant get the disk utility to raid the drives.
Is there a way to do this or to "trick" osx into thinking they are both firewire drives? Any hack or workaround welcome - even if it requires editing odd files via the terminal as this is a test system anyway and can reinstall if i need to.
    Pete

    Hi Pete;
RAID 1 or mirroring is NOT a good backup solution.
The primary purpose for RAID 1 is to protect from disk failure.
By way of an example as to why RAID is not a backup solution, consider what would happen if you had an application which had a dozen files opened. The application aborted taking all of the file with it.
How could recover with RAID 1? You could not because as soon as the application aborted all of the files would be removed from all of the disk in the RAID array. You would have no way to recover without a backup of the data. Hence data on RAID 1 must be backed up.
If you still want to create this RAID 1 array, I would certainly recommend that you don't mix USB and Firewire. Any RAID is dependent on the various parts of the array being similar as to connectivity and hardware.

  • "Create" button dim when attempting to setup mirrored RAID in Disk Utility.

I'm trying to setup a mirrored RAID in Disk Utility (v10.5.6) in MacOS 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5. I've got the System and all of my files on a 500 GB Seagate internal drive and I've added a blank 500 GB Western Digital internal drive to be the mirror. When I boot from the Seagate drive and run Disk Utility, I can follow all of the instructions for setting up a mirrored RAID (except the last instruction):
    1) Launch disk utility.
    2) Select my boot drive.
    3) Click on the RAID tab.
    4) Enter a RAID Set Name and select a Volume Format (Mac OS Extended Journaled).
    5) Drag a drive or volume to the set. Okay, I actually have a problem here, because if I drag the boot volume or drive to the set, nothing happens (it doesn't appear in the selection box). So I drag the blank volume to the set and it shows up in the selection box.
    6) Select RAID type (RAID Slice).
    7) Click the "Create" button.
That's the step that I can't complete; the "Create" button is dimmed (grayed out, disabled). My boot drive isn't partitioned (it has just one volume), I've run Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions before I attempted to set up the RAID, and both drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended Journaled." The only potential cause I can think of is that the two drives I'm using, though they're both 500 GB drives, are from different manufacturers. I can't imagine that would make a difference though.
Why is the "Create" button dimmed?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your help!
Your explanation makes sense. I've just recovered from a hard drive failure and although I'd backed up most of the files the night before, I still lost a day's worth of email and several days worth of other files. Mirroring appealed to me because then I'd always have a completely up-to-date copy of everything, but your bad experiences with it give me pause.
Is there another backup strategy you can recommend that would give me really up-to-date backups of my entire boot volume?
    Thanks again!

  • Major External USB Disk problem

I noticed today that an external drive I have had connected to my MacBook Pro for several months seemed to have no data on it. While showing no files or folders in the Finder view, it showed that only 222GB or so was still free though the drive is a 500GB unit. In Disk Utility it does show the additiona 243GB or so as "Used".
I have tried running Verify Disk and got a message saying
"First Aid Failed / Disk Utility stopped verifying "VMG 001" because the following error was encountered / File System verify or repair failed"
I then tried Repair Disk and got this message:
"Verify and Repair volume "VMG 001" / The disk "VMG 001" could not be unmounted"
I then tried Erasing the drive (to restore from my Time Machine backup on a Time Capsule) but I can't do that either. Finally, when I try to eject the drive to unplug it I get a message saying it could not be ejected and I should "Try quitting applications and try again"
Neddless to say that I've tried that and it still won't eject.
Do I have a virus, a major disk problem or a combination of the two. ANd is there a way to recover the drive or am I going to have to get another drive. If I do, and I give it the sam volume name will I be able to recover my data with Time Machine?
Thanks for any help you can offer.
    - Vikas

One possibility is that if you regularly drag lareg numbers of files to it, Spotlight is constantly trying to catch up with what you deleted and what you brought over.
I drag 10GB to a LaCie once or twice a month and it does take a few hours to stop rattling.

  • Nvidia RAID Driver Disk

    Nvidia RAID Driver Disk
The problem is with trying to Install Windows XP [Upgrade]. (Clean Install)
    K7N2 Delta2-LSR
I tried using the nForce3 SATA RAID Driver For Win2k/XP after pressing F6,
    during XP Install.
They don't work, and after trying a couple of times - got an error reading.
This Motherboard has an nForce2 Chipset, so I read the Manual.
It showed how to make an Floppy SATA RAID Driver Disk.
I tried to copy the SATA RAID Drivers from the MSI Driver's CD - but
    got Disk Full.
Then I downloaded an Program to Format Floppy at 1.72MB, and copied
all the necessary files to Floppy.
Tried using it after pressing F6, but got Error - Unrecoginized Format.
(The Floppy did read OK, MS-WIN ME)
BTW I thought this Motherboard used nForce2 SATA RAID, why they include
nForce3 SATA RAID Driver Floppy - I wonder.
Any way to get SATA RAID Driver's that will fit on FDD 1.44MB ?
    [size=18]TheCyberDude[/size]

    [size=18]UPDATE[/size][/b]
I looked at the nForce3 SATA RAID Driver, and the Folder raidtool was not on it.
They Manual said to copy all files (Including Folders) to Floppy.
(This wasn't posible, because of size limitation - 1.44 MB)
So I made an SATA RAID Driver from the MSI CD, except I didn't copy the
    Folder raidtool.
I tried to install Windows XP Again, it Took the SATA RAID Drivers OK -
but after it said Setup loading files and the STALLS at Setup is Starting
    Windows.
Tried it again, except this time I got this error:
(File txtsetup.oem caused an unexpected error (1024) at line 1747 in
    d:\xpsprtm\base\boot\setup\oemdisk.c.)
If I don't Press F6, it shows the partitions:
39080 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
    C: Partition1 [FAT32] 78160 MB (77280 MB free)
39080 MB Disk 0 at Id 0 on bus 0 on atapi [MBR]
    Unpartitioned space 39080MB
I was able to Format with NTFS (Successfully), but it wasn't recongized.
(Figured that it wouldn't - Because I was able to get SATA RAID Driver's loaded Successfully)
Just wanted to see what it would do.

  • Is there any way to recover my AddressBookapp with out the installation DVD

my address book app is not working and i have lost my installation DVD is there any way to recover or install the app again?

The only things I can suggest are to use Disk Utility to repair your permissions and to drag the Address Book application out of the applications folder, do a system restart, and put it back again - I haven't seen this myself, but I saw it suggested for a similar problem. You should probably also delete ~/Lbrary/Preferences/com.apple.addressbook.plist and drag folder ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook to the desktop (though since it also didn't work in the other account this is unlikely to be the problem). I suppose you should also check your fonts, but since you aren't reporting problems with other apps this also is a long shot. You should have LucidaGrande, Helvetica, Times and Monaco.

  • Deleted home directory from XRAID any way to recover?

    Hi
Hope someone maybe able to help me with this issue which is causing me great agony at the moment.
We had storage issues on our Apple XRAID and on the RAID it stored approx 700 user home folders. There were under a folder called 'home directories'. A lot of these areas where fairly sizable so we were advised that we can run a command in terminal which can clear the trash folders in a users home directory.
This would certainly help clear some of the unnecessary space that was being taken up.
So in terminal a command was run:
    rm - R -v /Volumes/RAID/Homedirectories/*/.Trash
We were told that the last statement would have interrogated each user home folder and deleted the trash folder.
We found though that whilst this command worked and deleted the trash, it also deleted all user home folders and everything within these folders.
I have a massive dilemma now as all the work is lost and our backup software wasn't working at the same time so I not able to do a restore. I was using RetroSpect 8.
I have tried various undelete software to interrogate the RAID and see if it can recover files. I have used:
Stella Phoenix, Rstudio for Mac and Disk Warrior.
These programs have not been able to recover anything.
I was going to use a freeware tool called TestDisk and photorec buts its going to take about 3 days for it to run on the XRAID as its 3tb in size.
Does anyone think I could try something else to help me find the accidently deleted data. With the rm commands that have been run is there any way to recover from it from an XRAID.
I have found some other software cannot see the XRAID. Does anyone know of other software which has been successful?
    Thank you

Since this issue and through the countless data recovery methods used. I am concerned that the disks will have gone through **** with intensive interrogation of that disks.
Am I just being anal or do I have a genuine reason to be slightly worried.
I am going to put a bid to my seniors about maybe purchasing a new storage device to replace the XRAID and maybe use the XRAID for just backup/archival purposes.
What suggestions do users have with other Storage Arrays? I ideally want something where I can at least have about 5tb but with the option to grow and I want to be able to use both the XRAID and the new storage device in conjunction. Could I possibly have a replication between the new storage array and the XRAID?
Which devices out there would be an ideal replacement for the Apple XRAID that others recommend?
    United Digital Hyperstar
ACTIVE RAID ES (From the developers of the original XRAID)
    Promise vTrak E-CLASS
Am I right in saying that I would replace the existing fibre channel card in the Xserve with a new 4 port 4Gb card. so I can attach 2 ports of the existing Xserve RAID and the other 2 ports to the a new storage device.
My plan would be to use RAID5 for redundancy, any benefits of using some other RAID such as 1+0 or RAID50?
    Thanks

  • HELP - Lost Mail Folders - Any way to recover?

All of my custom email folders have disappeared. This is tragic, as my last backup was several months ago (yes yes... I know this is my own fault). After reading around online here, I see that the Preferences file can get corrupted if hard drive space is low. I am guessing that this is my problem, since I had Photoshop running at the same time, and only 6gig free on my 80gig drive, and remember a pop-up window appearing in Photoshop saying that my hard drive space was low.
This being the case -- just because a preference file gets deleted/messed-up, does this mean that there is NO way to recover those messages? What happened to those original files of mine that held those messages? I must have had 30 folders, and all of them are zapped from my hard drive? Not in the trash, not in the POP folders in my Library, not anywhere when I do a Find for their name. I just don't understand how they could disappear completely, and isn't there a chance that there is some recoverable data somewhere on my drive??
I also don't understand why my Junk Mail, Sent Mail and InBox mail was NOT deleted. Only the folders that I had created to file my messages. And I didn't have to re-setup my accounts or do anything like that.
Thanks in advance for any advice that anybody might be able to share.
    G4 Titanium Powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   Mail 2.0.5

Hi all. I sure appreciate everybody's suggestions and feedback. Even though ultimately things have not worked out for me, I have a renewed faith in the Apple community as a whole -- which counts for something.
I'll try to sum up what happened for me. First, my mail folders/mbox files were nowhere to be found on my computer (either by looking in that specific heirarchy or by doing a Find for their names). Also, I did not delete any accounts at the time of the problem. I DID delete a folder from within Mail that showed up at the top of my Mail list, named "/" and which contained a single folder named "library" (I think?) which contained a single folder named "mail" or something to that effect. Basically, several folders nested within each other, with the bottom folder being caled "INBOX" (written like that) and containing mail that I had not seen before. I selected all, dragged it to my real InBox, and then deleted the top-level folder from Mail's list (named "/"). It was shortly thereafter that I lost all of my mail folders. I've never seen a mailbox folder just add itself to the list like that -- has anybody else? And then combine that with the fact that I was running a huge Photoshop file and had maxed out my hard drive's empty space as PS used it up for memory... So basically it evidently all set up a situation that caused corruption on a huge level, and caused me to lose every custom mailbox that I had defined, but not my InBox, Drafts, Sent Mail or Junk. (Luckily my Junk mail was saved, eh? How lucky for me. ha ha)
With the advice of folks here and at the Apple store and on the phone with data-saving software reps, I tried Disk Utility to first repair permissions and then fix the disk. It did find a few things on both tests, and I did repair them -- but Mail still wouldn't pull up those folders. I also ran TechTool and Data Rescue II on my drive (TAKING HOURS AND HOURS) -- but no luck.
Nobody ever seemed to think I would have much luck, but I had to give it a shot, since losing all of that mail was going to be hard for me.
And so this afternoon, I have come to the conclusion that my situation is hopeless, and I need to get back the use of my Powerbook (I have huge deadlines that I'm really behind on now, because of all of this down-time having software check my drive).
The lesson here, boys and girls, is to not take lightly the significance of hard drive space -- and to not only backup your most important files (like I did)... but to also back up your mail folder regularly... as well as any other quirky little things that might not seem obvious, but which if were eliminated from your life, would make you sad.
So thanks again to all who posted their suggestions -- it was worth my effort to give everything a shot, even though unfortunately there was not a happy ending.
