RAID 10 and ASM

HI
Can someone give the difference between RAID 10 and ASM
From my understanding both is doing stripping of data.
If we are implementing RAID 10 ,then do we need to implement ASM (if yes what is the advantage)
Thanks

In other words, ASM is a Storage (or Volume) Manager System that runs on different RAID implementations. The RAID implementation can be at the actual storage layer (hardware RAID).. in which case RAID is external to ASM. Or ASM can itself be used to implement RAID to run on (software RAID).
From my understanding both is doing stripping of data.ASM automatically stripes data across disks (e.g. RAID10 disks) in a diskgroup. RAID10 is a combination of striping and mirroring. So yes, both use striping - but ASM != RAID10. These are 2 very different layers in the storage tier.
If we are implementing RAID 10 ,then do we need to implement ASM (if yes what is the advantage)Yes. ASM manages the storage layer for you. It can perform dynamic load balancing. With ASM 11r2, there are even more features that are introduced that makes ASM a very important part in tying the storage layer effectively and efficiently with the o/s layer and the database layer.
Oracle specifically recommends using ASM for RAC.

  • General HELP for RAID and HOME NETWORK... I'm a bit lost :(

First off, I'm sorry about the long post but I just wanted to ask everything at once since I don't know what effects what?
Over the past years I've had a MBP and have always added Western Digital Mybook drives whenever I needed storage. One of clicked and died this past year and I lost some data since I was "MANUALLY" backing up. Since then I've tried to read about RAID, NAS, and DROBO type devices.
I recently bought a Mac Pro 2008 edition because I needed more speed. I mainly edit wedding photos in Lightroom but also come from a heavy motion graphics background and do some After Effects projects from time to time.
Here's a list of my current setup and what I'm hoping to achieve but I'm in over my head of what to do???
1 Mac Pro (2008 edition) - I'm considering setting up 4 1TB harddrives inside that are mirrored. I was looking at the Caviar Black or Hitachi drives...
    2. I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations for my home network. (One is plugged into my Mac Pro and the other is near my Vizio LCD and Xbox 360. I've been toying around with sharing iPhoto slideshows (which I really like the idea of) The problem is that it seems really slow for video and hiccups on the stills sometimes. It doesn't seem to make a difference if it's pulling it from the Mac Pro or from a USB drive attached directly to my Airport Extreme. How do I speed this up? Is it always going to be faster to stream from the Mac Pro over ethernet cable than a harddrive plugged in through USB?
    3. A few RAID and NAS solutions I've been looking at are the following but I don't really understand what I get with an external device vs an internal? I also don't know which is BETTER? for easy reliable backup.

    4. I've been reading mixed reviews about the Drobo but don't quite understand if it's a better solution then setting up a mirror INSIDE my Mac Pro. I DO NOT want to buy a $900 raid card for the Mac Pro though. Do most people choose the Drobo because they only have laptops? Should I only consider building something inside my Mac Pro?
    5. I was considering Chonosync for backing up 3rd level backups
    6. I just bought a Blu-Ray drive for 4th level backups that I can send off site.
    7. I have all these other Mybooks. Two of them are mirrored but only one is a 1TBx2 Sata drive. The rest are IDE. I guess I'll just use these for misc things? Maybe just plug one into the Xbox for watching movies?
    8. My neighbor down the hall has a similar setup and is using a Mac Mini to stream things (through Front Row) like Hulu and videos another room to his TV. Mine doesn't seem to stream fast enough. Since I have the MBP that I will use rarely since I got my desktop I was considering using that instead of Apple TV or a Mac Mini but it's too slow? Maybe I set it up wrong?
PLEASE HELP? I don't know what I'm doing.

    Hi,
For backup, video work, photography and expanding the Mac Pro storage capability the FirmTek SeriTek/5PM would be my choice. The bundle that you pointed to will work if 130MB/sec. is fastest enogh for your needs. The card is only $70 in the bundle which makes it a nice deal.
    http://firmtek.stores.yahoo.net/sata5pm2se2.html
If you want 200MB/sec, performance I would go with the Sonnet Tempo E4P or the HighPoint RR 2314 if you desire RAID 5 redundancy.
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/sonnet/mac-pro/
    http://www.amug.org/amug-web/html/amug/reviews/articles/highpoint/2314/
Trying to use NAS via the network will be 3-7x slower than the SeriTek/5PM. The SeriTek/5PM is a much better choice for backup, video and photography. NAS is good for low energy, always on, low use server needs. However, you can simply turn Mac OS X file sharing on and the Mac Pro will provide performance faster than any NAS.
Drobo - Why do people even consider this option?
The performance is USB speed even with a FW800 connection.
Users have reported losing data with firmware updates.
And the unit is one of the most expensive, slow performing options available. I cannot image ever wanting a Drobo
    Backup Software:
I like SuperDuper. I also like using the "Restore" tab in Disk Utility to clone one disk to another. The key to good backup is to keep it simple and regular.
    MyBook - NOT
If your storage needs exceed more than a single FireWire backup disk you really need to go with eSATA. The SeriTek/5PM and the Mac Pro combination provides virtually unlimited storage capabilities as the tray system allows new hard disk sets to be easily loaded or dismounted.
    Have fun!

  • 11g CRS and ASM, 10.2.0.4 database, how to set up RMAN

Hi all, I am fairly green when it comes to RAC so please bear with me. I have a Linux 2 node RAC environment. The servers are lux148 and lux149. The 2 node cluster is running 11g CRS and ASM. The database is 10.2.0.4. It had to be set up this way in order for IBM DataStage to work. The database name is fictrp0. The instances are fictrp01 (lux148) and fictrp02 (lux149). I am trying to register the database with an RMAN catalog. I am under the impression that I need to register the database (fictrp0) not the instances (fictrp01 and fictrp02) with the RMAN catalog. Is this correct? So I log into lux148 and set my environment so the ORACLE_SID=FICTRP0. From the command line I issue the following:
    fictrp0:/u01/app/oracle> rman target / catalog rman102/[email protected]
    The command returns the following:
    Recovery Manager: Release 10.2.0.4.0 - Production on Wed Oct 29 14:05:50 2008
Copyright (c) 1982, 2007, Oracle. All rights reserved.
connected to target database (not started)
    connected to recovery catalog database
Is this normal "connected to target database (not started)"? I was expecting to see a DBID=FICTRP0 for the target. If this is typical, how will RMAN know the ID of the database? Should I be trying to register an instance perhaps such as FICTRP01? If so do I need to register both instances (FICTRP01 and FICTRP02)?
Bottom line I am very confused on how RAC and RMAN work together. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You no need to register the instance,You need to register only the database and database only will have DBID

  • How to GET RID of RAID and get back to IDE??

    Hi,
I have a great Z800 Workstation with a 1.5TB HDD running Win7Pro-64. I've been using an 128GB SSD cache (Synapse/Dataplex) for about a year with no trouble, but stupidly thought that Intel's RST (Rapid Storage Technology) would do a better job, for writing in particular. So I installed RST... and run into touble.
RST put the two disks into a RAID... but since the disks are not the same geometry, and I appear to have an old chipset, it never actually worked: RST was unable to create a cache (i.e. to accelerate the HDD with the SSD) and the SSD became useless, as its Dataplex conroller clashed with the RAID.
In short, I would like to GET RID of the RAID (in view to replace the HDD by an SSD altogether)... but that appears to be impossible: I uninstalled RST and followed the "removdrv.txt" advice to switch (back) from RAID to IDE in the machine Setup... but Windows BSODs unless I keep RAID. Yes, I tried any and every "Repair" options Win7 could offer.
So my question is: how can I get rid of the (fake/useless) RAID and get back to IDE?
    Many thanks for your advice!

I have some bad news for you.
If there is an actual RAID configuration present, then there is no turning back.
Breaking a RAID set destroys data on the set and makes it unbootable. That is why you are seeing the BSOD. If you kep playing with it, eventually it won't even boot up in RAID.
That means starting again from scratch with a new OS install.

LRM-00109: could not open parameter file '/oracle/app/oracle/product/11.1.0/db_1/dbs/initTMISC11G.ora'

That is wre the confusion is: I coud nt find it under O_H/dbs,
However the log file indicates that it is using spfile which is located at :
    spfile = +DATA_TIER/dintw10g/parameterfile/spfile_dintw10g.ora
Now it checks only the /dbs directory only i guess.
Could you please how can i bring it up now.
Just for the information: ASM instance is up.

  • Setting up a new raid and preserving disk contents

I have a Maxtor 250GB drive full of data. I just purchased a Maxtor 300GB drive that I am going to use as a RAID 1. Is it possible to set up the raid without formatting the 250GB and immediately have it mirrored to the 300? If so, what steps would I take?
Also can I set up two volumes on the 300 so that 250 is part of the raid and the extra 50 isn't?

yes I noticed that but I travel a lot and want to have then stored on the Ipad so I don't use 3G data usage unknowingly..Its good in a way cause music you don't really listen to does not waste space...I did notice that if you select "album" view there is a choice to "download all" in that album so that would be faster then one by one..I would think they have a "download all" for the whole libary.

  • Solaris 10 and Hitachi LUN mapping with Oracle 10g RAC and ASM?

    Hi all,
I am working on an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM installation with Sun E6900 servers attached to a Hitachi SAN for shared storage with Sun Solaris 10 as the server OS. We are using Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2.0.3) RAC clusterware
for the clustering software and raw devices for shared storage and Veritas VxFs 4.1 filesystem.
    My question is this:
How do I map the raw devices and LUNs on the Hitachi SAN to Solaris 10 OS and Oracle 10g RAC ASM?
I am aware that with an Oracle 10g RAC and ASM instance, one needs to configure the ASM instance initialization parameter file to set the asm_diskstring setting to recognize the LUNs that are presented to the host.
I know that Sun Solaris 10 uses /dev/rdsk/CwTxDySz naming convention at the OS level for disks. However, how would I map this to Oracle 10g ASM settings?
I cannot find this critical piece of information ANYWHERE!!!!
    Thanks for your help!

You don't seem to state categorically that you are using Solaris Cluster, so I'll assume it since this is mainly a forum about Solaris Cluster (and IMHO, Solaris Cluster with Clusterware is better than Clusterware on its own).
Clusterware has to see the same device names from all cluster nodes. This is why Solaris Cluster (SC) is a positive benefit over Clusterware because SC provides an automatically managed, consistent name space. Clusterware on its own forces you to manage either the symbolic links (or worse mknods) to create a consistent namespace!
So, given the SC consistent namespace you simple add the raw devices into the ASM configuration, i.e. /dev/did/rdsk/dXsY. If you are using Solaris Volume Manager, you would use /dev/md/<setname>/rdsk/dXXX and if you were using CVM/VxVM you would use /dev/vx/rdsk/<dg_name>/<dev_name>.
Of course, if you genuinely are using Clusterware on its own, then you have somewhat of a management issue! ... time to think about installing SC?

    Hi,
asm resource is depending on diskgroup resource ... if diskgroup res. is not available, crsctl status shows offline, I would expect asm should be also shown as 'offline' (and brought offline) as they are dependent.
What is the point of managing resources via srvctl when it doesn't take care of dependencies? For me it's wrong.ora.asm : is ASM Instance
    ora.*.dg : is Diskgroup
ora.*.dg is dependent of ora.asm, not to the contrary.
I can have more than one diskgroup and want only one diskgroup disabled, so I need the ASM Instance (ora.asm) online.
    Important:
If you shut down the database with SQL*Plus, Oracle Restart does not interpret this as a database failure and does not attempt to restart the database.
Similarly, if you shut down the Oracle ASM instance with SQL*Plus or ASMCMD, Oracle Restart does not attempt to restart it.
An important difference between starting a component with SRVCTL and starting it with SQL*Plus (or another utility) is the following:
When you start a component with SRVCTL, any components on which this component depends are automatically started first, and in the proper order.
When you start a component with SQL*Plus (or another utility), other components in the dependency chain are not automatically started; you must ensure that any components on which this component depends are started.
Oracle Restart also manages the weak dependency between database instances and the Oracle Net listener (the listener): When a database instance is started, Oracle Restart attempts to start the listener. If the listener startup fails, then the database is still started. If the listener later fails, Oracle Restart does not shut down and restart any database instances.
It makes no sense Oracle Restart to shut down all environment (databases) because the listener down.

  • Cluster and ASM services doesnt start automatically

    Hi,
I have configured a 2 node 10g RAC environment (rac, rac2) in RHEL 4 through vmware.
However the cluster services and ASM services do not come up automatically after server reboot. I have to manually bring it up using ./srvctl command.
    [root@rac2 bin]# ./crs_stat -t
    Name          Type     Target     State     Host
    ora....SM1.asm     application     ONLINE     UNKNOWN     rac

    ora.rac2.vip     application     ONLINE     ONLINE     rac2
Could someone please guide me as to how these services can be brought up automatically upon every reboot?

Normally all services will start automatically, I am not sure how you installed and configured your RAC.
Here i am giving all options.
    Option1:-
    Re: CRS auto-start
    Option2:-
    See the below links.
    http://jaffardba.blogspot.com/2009/03/how-to-startup-rac-database-services.html
    http://www.dannorris.com/2009/03/12/start-database-services-automatically-after-instance-startup/
    Option3:-
if you simply want to start the service upon server reboot, put srvctl
command in rc.local script under /etc directory.
    Hope this solves your issue.

  • On-board RAID and PCI RAID controller

    Hello everybody,
I am new to the forum. So, please excuse me if that topic was already covered...
I have MSI MAX2-LR (MS-6398E) board. It works just fine, no problem so far. Though I have 2 problems with add-on cards:
    1.  I was planning to use on-board RAID and additional PCI RAID controller = FastTrack 100 TX2 to cover 6 hard drives into 2 mirrored sets: 4drives one and 2 drives the other.
It doesn't work! I can use either on-board RAID or PCI RAID. As soon as I have any drive connected to on-board RAID, the PCI RAID disappeares. If I have no drives connected to on-board RAID, I can see both RAID controllers, they have different I/O and IRQs, and PCI RAID is working just fine. If only I connect one drive to the on-board RAID, it gets activated on startup, and the other one disappeares. :O
I believe it's a BIOS bug. I wander, if that can be fixed easily????? :D
    2. I have a new Matrox Video card = Parhelia. It doesn't work in AGP slot! System doesn't recognize it, and beeps non-stop. I am dealing with Matrox Tech Support on that matter.  ?(
Maybe, it's a known issue, and somebody can save me time by telling what's that about.
Appreciate any imput. Have a great weekend.!!! :]

Hey I also have the same Raid card and also the Matrox Parhelia, and I see that you also have some problems with the card I got also problems with the card, but they couldnt help me at theire forums (http://forum.matrox.com/mgaforum/Forum10/HTML/005085.html), I hope we have got more luck here  :D

Do i need to set the compatible parameter?
    Regards,
    Vish

It looks to me like your server is absolutely buried, and ASM may just be an innocent bystander. What is going on in the database when this happens? Also, run sar samples at 30 second intervals up to when this happens to see what is happening. It's overhead, but you need to find what is causing the problem with the server(s).
    Are you swapping?

  • Patching Strategy for CRS and ASM homes

I'm fairly new to RAC/ASM and haven't performed any patch set upgrades yet. Back in the simple days when I wanted to apply a patch set to a database, say from 10.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.5, I would create a brand new Oracle home ahead of time and apply the patch set to it. I'd name my homes like this:
    /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.4/db1
    /opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.5/db1
During the maintenance window I would change /etc/oratab to point the database to the new 10.2.0.5 and complete the database upgrade scripts. The advantages of this strategy:
1 - Less risk installing software as nothing uses the new home yet. If something goes wrong in the install, no big deal. Research the problem and try again without being under the stress of a defined maintenance window.
2 - No need to backup old home for back-out purposes.
3 - Less time required for database to be down during actual patch window since Oracle Installer does not need to run.
Now with CRS and ASM, is there a way to pre-stage a new home for those, but not have them "active" to the node until later during the maintenance window?
For ASM, it seems like it would be possible to treat the same way as database and simply update ASM SID in /etc/oratab
    +ASM1:/opt/oracle/product/10.2.0.5/asm1
but I'm not totally confident in that as I'm afraid the CRS home may already have references to the ASM home in the cluster registry.
For CRS, it seems like the home is pretty well hard-wired into the node startup scripts and installing a brand new CRS home will probably disrupt the running CRS home.
    Any thoughts about this?

Starting with 11.2 for Grid Infrastructure only "out-of-place" patchset upgrades are supported.

Any thoughts about this?As of 11gR2 the ASM is part of the Grid Infrastructure, therefore it is running from the same home and not recommended to separate them. (although you can do that)
By the way, what is your upgrade path? It could be easier to answer your questions if we knew that as there has been a quite a few enhancements and changes in the upgrade/patching process from 10g to 11g. (even between 11gR1 and 11gR2)

  • First try at a raid and CCC and have an issue?

I recently bought 2 new 4tb seagate drives and an OWC elite pro dual inclosure with esata connections to back up my media files. For the last few years I've used a single drive for my media files and I've backed up that single drive with other single drives via CCC with no issues. I've had succes setting up the new stripped raid with the 2 4tb drives to create 1 8tb volume. However numerous tries to clone my single media drive to the raid using CCC have failed. The raid will unmount after 6 hours sometimes longer. Sometimes CCC will say there were problems with files. Today I reformated the raid back to 2 individual drives. I tried clonning my media drive to just one of the new drives in the new enclosure and it worked fine. I'm running the current version of mountain lion 10.8.4. So it seems to me that there seems to be an issue with the raid I'm setting up and mountain lion or maybe CCC. Anybody have any clue as to what's going on here? My next step is to try the 2 new drives in 2 of my mac pro's internal bays.....set up a raid again and try clonning that way. I was hoping to check in here first to see if someone knows what the issue may be first.
    Thanks
    Dave

This could be many things, doubtful it is hardware in itself as much as compatibility since each drive functions perfectly fine before the RAID. I would definitely download that driver. You mention energy saver preferences are off (ie unchecking 'Put hard disk to Sleep when Possible'), but keep in mind these preferences only apply to your bootable volume. The driver specifically addresses this issue.
Also, just reading up online and in the forums, ML may be buggy when it comes to 2TB+ volumes (though in theory OSX could support 8EB of HFS+ formatted arrays!). Another option would be to purchase a program that would substitute for OSX native Disk Utility in handling large sized RAIDs:
"Apple’s Disk Utility can be quite flaky with RAID and partitioning. It can crash and do other confusing things; you might have to repartition and/or delete volumes to restore drives to a basic state. For me however, it has never done anything bad to drives/volumes that it wasn’t already asked to operate on. I do not recommend Disk Utility for more complex RAID setups due to its bugs. Consider SoftRAID instead. "
Download the driver first! Best of Luck.

  • Clone multi-node RAC and ASM to single node

    Hi everyone.
I need clone system with 3 application server and 2 oracle database RAC and ASM to single-node. The operating system is RHEL 5.
I see some metalink notes, but we can't found nothing. I find notes with multi-node to single-node, but nothing with RAC to non-RAC.
The eBS version is 11.5.10.2 and database version is 10.2.0.3
    Is possible this clone?
    Thanks very much.
