RAID 5 and Disk utility problems - wrong volume size for formatting

Hi ..
I seem to have an odd problem with setting up our new RAID 5 solution. We just bought the SR6600 with seperately bought Western Digital 750Gb servergrade SATA disks.
Through the console I configured the RAID set to be RAID5 with a total capacity of 2750Gb and with a volumeset of 3000Gb (4 discs capacity and 1 disc parity).
Here's the problem:
When I'm trying to format the new volume for HFS+ usage, I open Disk Utility and it shows the volume, but the capacity is only 750Gb - similar to 1 disc's capacity. I find this odd and I've searched all over the net for a solution and answer.
Please advice if anyone know of any management software, explaination, etc.
Much appreciated, thanks!

I've run into the same issue with a newer PPC XServe. However, after I tried to reformat, I still only show up with the orginal size, and not the new size, even after I restarted the server and XRAID.
Did you have any success with your reformat?

ok i have parallels installed and using the boot camp partition, however the disk utility keeps changing the disk id (e.g. disk2s2) and everytime this has happens I need to edit the pvs file. Now this is a real ball ache. Can anyone tell me if there is a way of making mac os x disk utility keep the same disk id the same everytime i boot up?

cheers for the reply, however I did not create a boot camp partition on the 300gb drive I wish I had now) but simply installed windows XP onto it.
here is a screen capture of the DU:

As you can see it currently says the 300gb WD is disk0s2, however yesterday it was disk1s2. Strange. Is there anyway of making OS X keep the disk id the same everytime I boot up?

  • Disk Utility reading incorrect HD size - cannot format disk

I have a 250 GB external SATA drive, which I want to format for use with Time Machine. I had a power failure in the middle of the format to HFS+, and now disk utility reads the drive as a 2 Terrabyte drive rather than as a 250 GB drive (and cannot format it or mount it).
Does anyone have ideas on how to regain access to this drive?
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks neutron. I am trying that now - Disk Utility tells me that it will take 25 days and 19 hours to complete the erase, but I'm willing to let it run.

  • Problems running Software Update and Disk Utility

I had automatic updating turned on in the Software Updates control panel, so I believe the system tried to apply the 10.4.6 automatically and somehow failed.
Ever since, when I try to run Software Update it hangs while trying to connect to the internet to get the list of available updates. I tried downloading the installer directly from Apple, but when I try to select a volume on which to install the update, it doesn't list my hard drive.
Finally, when trying to run the Disk Utility, I get an error about how the Disk Utility cannot be started because a background process is not running. I have to Force Quit to exit out of the Utility.
I was able to boot off the Mac OS X 10.4 installation DVD at which point I repaired the permissions and repaired the disk. However, upon restart the same problems remain.
I've seen several other people post about this issue; has anyone found a resolution OTHER than doing an Archive and Install (which I don't want to do if I don't have to?)
Thanks so much for help that anyone can provide!
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Create a new admin account with Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Accounts and see if the issue duplicates itself logging into that account. That will say if the issue systemwide, or just localized to the a bad user cache file. If the issue persists in the new user, you can try looking in the System -> Library and Library -> Cache, Applications Support, and ByHost folders for cache files relating to Software Update and Disk Utility. Once you find them, carefully extract them to comparable folders on your desktop you create (i.e. name one systemlibrarycache) so you know where you go them from, and restart your Mac. If the issues go away after two restarts then it is just one set of bad cache files. If the issues return after two restarts, you have something generating bad cache files which needs a more system wide repair tool.

  • "Create" button dim when attempting to setup mirrored RAID in Disk Utility.

I'm trying to setup a mirrored RAID in Disk Utility (v10.5.6) in MacOS 10.4.11 on a PowerMac G5. I've got the System and all of my files on a 500 GB Seagate internal drive and I've added a blank 500 GB Western Digital internal drive to be the mirror. When I boot from the Seagate drive and run Disk Utility, I can follow all of the instructions for setting up a mirrored RAID (except the last instruction):
    1) Launch disk utility.
    2) Select my boot drive.
    3) Click on the RAID tab.
    4) Enter a RAID Set Name and select a Volume Format (Mac OS Extended Journaled).
    5) Drag a drive or volume to the set. Okay, I actually have a problem here, because if I drag the boot volume or drive to the set, nothing happens (it doesn't appear in the selection box). So I drag the blank volume to the set and it shows up in the selection box.
    6) Select RAID type (RAID Slice).
    7) Click the "Create" button.
That's the step that I can't complete; the "Create" button is dimmed (grayed out, disabled). My boot drive isn't partitioned (it has just one volume), I've run Disk Utility to repair Disk Permissions before I attempted to set up the RAID, and both drives are formatted as "Mac OS Extended Journaled." The only potential cause I can think of is that the two drives I'm using, though they're both 500 GB drives, are from different manufacturers. I can't imagine that would make a difference though.
Why is the "Create" button dimmed?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Scott

    Hi there,
    Thanks for your help!
Your explanation makes sense. I've just recovered from a hard drive failure and although I'd backed up most of the files the night before, I still lost a day's worth of email and several days worth of other files. Mirroring appealed to me because then I'd always have a completely up-to-date copy of everything, but your bad experiences with it give me pause.
Is there another backup strategy you can recommend that would give me really up-to-date backups of my entire boot volume?
    Thanks again!

  • Disk Utility problems - cannot fix...

    Hi there,
Had a few problems on my computer, so I ran the regular checks. Virusbarrier X, ClamXav, everything in Tech Tool Pro 4, CRON scripts (and a few other things in Onyx), Repair Permissions, and Disk Utility Drive Checks.
Most of this was done in Safe Mode or whilst booted from tech Tool Pro disc.
Everything is good now... except this:
When I run disk utility when the computer is running normally and I am logged into my account, no problems show up.
However when I run it from the OSX Install disc the following errors come up (for my 2 drives):
    1. Invalid leaf record count (it should be 5 instead of 2660)
    2. Invalid leaf record count (it should be 19 instead of 2907)
Whats that all about then and how can I fix it?
    Thanks

    Have you done this?
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger) and/or TechTool Pro (4.5.2 for Tiger) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.

  • Help! PB G4 won't boot and Disk Utility can't fix it!

I have an insufficiently backed up PowerBook G4 1.67MHz (1GB RAM) that suddenly nosedived last night. I was surfing the Web and OmniWeb froze up. I couldn't force-quit it because the Finder was also locked up. So I held the power button until it shut down. When I restarted it, it got to the grey apple screen and hung there. I booted off the Tiger CD and ran Disk Utility, but it couldn't fix it. Then I tried booting into single-user mode and it also failed. Finally I tried reinstalling the system, but the CD couldn't find the hard drive. Aaargh!
I have a bunch of documents that I really cannot lose, and the most updated versions of them are only on this drive. Anyone know any tricks or third-party utilities that can help? I have another Mac; would Firewire Target Mode or Network booting help?
    Some details:
    Here's what Disk Utility said:
Invalid volume header (this was written in red)
    Checking Catalog file
Keys out of order (in red)
    Rebuilding Catalog B-tree (in green)
The volume [name] could not be repaired (in red)
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bold red)
    1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error (in bold red)
Repair attempted on one volume (in bold)
1 volume could not be repaired (in bold red)
Then it popped up a dialog box:
    First Aid Failed
Disk Utility stopped repairing [name] because the following error was encountered:
The underlying task reported failure on exit (in bold)
    Here's what single-user said:
It all booted normally, then I got these ominous entries in the list:
    disk0s3: I/O error.
    jnl: dojnlio: strategy err 0x5
jnl: open: could not read 512 bytes for the journal header.
hfs: late jnl init: failed to open/create the journal (retval 8).
    nfs_boot: networking is not initialized
    panic(cpu 0 caller 0x001F2634): nfsbootinit failed with 6
    [then there's two backtraces here]
    panic: We are hanging here...

As Mr Peck advised, DW is your best chance of getting out of this.
The important point of your post is the hard shut down (were you running Classic?) and the mention of Keys Out of Order. Do a search on these boards for Keys Out of Order for a quick education of the problem.
Make sure of the version of DW you use, get the disk and don't download, and make sure of your firmware version.

  • Xserve RAID won't RAID in disk utility

I have a XServe RAID that won't RAID in disk utility. The XServe is fully populated and there are two arrays created. Both of those arrays show up in disk utility and will only be partitioned with an Apple Partition Map. If I try to partition them GUID, that partition fails (system formatter failed). Once, I partition them APM, two volumes show up on the desktop. Then, I try to create a software RAID with those two volumes and I can not get the volumes to RAID together. The error message in disk utility says (RAID can not be modified). I have checked the system log and it says something about a socket error or that it can not bind. Does anyone have any ideas on why I can not create this RAID?
My end goal is to have 2 hardware RAID 5's and put a striped RAID set on top of that to have one large volume for Final Cut video editing.
I'm using a Mac Pro with Atto Celerity 42ES fibre card.
    Thanks

This may be a little too late, but maybe it will help. I'm not sure why this happens. I reinstalled my server, and I could not access the drives, even though they showed up in disk utility (as a blank file).
Here is what I did to fix it:
    1. Open up Disk Utility
    2. Make a disk image of the drive you want to mount, save this somewhere accessible (i saved it on another one of my RAID drives)
    3. Erase the disk, it should then mount and be accessible
    4. Restore the image onto the drive.
    Cheers!

  • Disk Utility problems/making a good image file problems

    Hi,
I am trying to make a disk image with Disk Utility. But every time when I run the program, it gathers disk info for a long time and then shuts down in unexpected error. What can be the problem here?
The reason that I want to make a disk image of my cd is this, maybe someone knows a solution for this problem well.
I have the original game cd of Alone in the Dark 1. I played this always on my pc in the past and now, with the help of a program called Boxer that allows to run dos games on the mac, it can run on my mac, but, the music cannot be found. According to the makers of Boxer this is because the music on the cd is separated from the rest of the data as audio tracks. I'm not a programmer so I don't understand everything behind this, but they advised me to make image file of the cd, mount it and then run Boxer with this mounted file.
I cannot do this however, because Toast doesn't make a good image file that includes the audio tracks and Disk Utility is shutting down with an error all the time. Maybe someone knows another solution?
    Best wishes,
    André

Maybe, but this cd if from 1992, did they do that already those days? However, I can make with Toast an image from the game, but the soundtracks are not included then. I can listen to the tracks in Itunes, they are visible like a normal audio cd. My only wish... is to play the games. Visiting the past, so to speak. And I can not play it on Windows, because it is not supported anymore after dos left the stage and I tried so many bootdisks on my pc, nothing works. Boxer therefore was a good help. The music though brings live to the game...

  • Repair Permissions differences between Onyx and Disk Utility

If I repair permissions, there are a large number of 'repaired permissions' if I switch between using Onyx (10.6) and Disk Utility. Most of them are in
    System / Library / CoreServices
    System / Library / Java
    System / Library / Frameworks
Why should this be? It makes me think that either Onyx or Disk Utility is doing it wrong. If I had to back which one it is, I'd have to say Onyx is the likeliest suspect. In other words should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?

should I avoid using Onyx to repair permissions and just use DU in future?
Probably, but some permission results are always and repetitively wrong:
As long as the report ends up with 'Permissions repair complete' then, as far as permissions go, you are fine. You can ignore the various statements in the report:
Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 onwards:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1448
Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard onwards changed the location of a number of system components.

  • Safari, Mail and Disk Utility won't run unless Font Book is Open

Recently Safari, Mail and Disk Utility would crash and spin and the "Application Not Responding" line would appear when I checked the program in the dock. After following a variety of tips from other Apple users, I finally got the programs to run. However, I started them while Font Book was open and now they only work when it remains open. I've been using Apple/Mac products since the beginning of time and have never seen anything like this. I've repaired permissions, throught out preferences, etc., etc. and can't resolve this problem. Please, someone, help me.

    Hello buhrow:
That makes two of us that go back to the beginning of time and have never seen anything like that. Have you run the fontbook applications to eliminate duplicates and check for corrupt fonts? Offhand, I cannot understand why just having a program open would prevent other programs from crashing.
If nothing else works, you might want to consider an archive and install (after backing up, of course):

  • Looking for opinions on Apple's software RAID in Disk Utility

I'm thinking about making a stripped RAID (RAID 0) with Apple's software RAID in Disk Utility. How reliable is it, and will I see a huge speed improvement over just having two independent drives. This RAID will also be my boot drive. Is that a good idea or should I have a separate drive for that function?

It depends. And seeing you don't have a lot of exposure to RAID, it depends, you still need even more to regularly backup, and depends on the drives to some extent. RAIDs are great for some things, and the sustained reads and writes look good in some simple benchmarks, but for most users, they are better off with a really good fast 10K Raptor or something as a dedicated OS/apps boot drive.

They did some earlier tests on RAID for boot drive, which you might want to look into.

  • Adding Drive to Concatenated RAID in Disk Utility

    Hello,
I'm having a spot of trouble with Disk Utility. 24 hours ago I added a new drive to a Concatenated Raid through Disk Utility, and clicked Update to set the process going.
Now it's not responding. It just claims to be updating. I struggle to believe that it takes this long though!
I didn't format the disk before adding it to the RAID. Is this what's causing the upset?
When I try to cancel it tells me I risk losing data on the disk. I'm not sure if it means the new disk or all disks on the array - which is a terrifying prospect. If I quit Disk Utility, will my existing data on the array be safe?
Thanks in advance for the help,
    Ben

The drives are in Sonnet P500 enclosures and connected to the MacPro via a Sonnet SATA card.
On purhcase I was told this could be done, as it's a Concatenated JBOD setup. For a better description of what I mean by that, this wiki article describes it well http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StandardRAIDlevels.
Does this provide any further clues?
Currently there are 7x 1TB drives in 2 enclosures. I've now added 2 more 1TB drives. I can currently see and continue to use the data on the existing 7 drives. My worry though is that if I quit the disk utility I may lose the data on the 7 original drives.

  • IPhoto and Disk Utility Will Not Launch - Please Help!!

    Hello!
The last week I have not been able to launch iPhoto. When I tried to troubleshoot last night by going through solutions on the forums, I realized that I couldn't launch Disk Utility either. I have since run the Disk Utility from the Mac OS Panther Install Disk, gone through several troubleshooting procedures (font cleanups, cache cleanups, hard-disk space cleanups, etc.) but with no success.
The last troubleshooting doc I went through recommended checking Console for a log of problems, and sure enough, the only comments in the Console Log were related to iPhoto and Disk Utility. Can someone please advise regarding the below comments and how to fix??

Hi - I appreciate the assistance, but archiving and reinstalling does not help me determine why this happened, how to prevent it from happening again, and is a fairly elaborate process for something that might have a quick fix (what I was hoping for). I was trying to leave that as a last resort.
Also, I have no idea what Onyx is - would you elaborate?
    Thank you!
