Raid Admin 1.5 Settings Default Back

Why do the performance settings in Raid Admin 1.5 default back to an "all checked" state? I often shut down the Xserve RAID because I get tired of the fan noise. Is that the cause?
Anyway, I thought the FCP 5 dropped frames problem was with my AJA IO. It turns out it is because the performance settings are defaulting back to "Allow Host Cache Flushing" which is totally incompatible with FCP 5.

Hi Patrick
I had the same issue and here's how I got the settings to stick.
I opened the settings dialog and turned off the "Allow Host Cach Flushing", saved, then opened them again and turned off the "Use Controller Write Cach", saved.
I then opened the settings again and turned back on the "Use Controller Write Cach" and saved.
It seems that if you do several open and saves this way, it will finally stick when you shutdown your Xserve RAID and then start it up again.
I have two Xserve RAID's and it work for both of them. One save just doesn't change the "Use Controller Write Cach" setting it takes 2 or 3 saves with the "Allow Host Cach Flushing" left unchecked.
Mine finally stuck, after doing it this way, for both channels of each RAID.
Hope this works for you?

  • Raid Admin loses settings

As of recently, I've noticed that on my main machine, every time I open up Raid Admin, the settings all default. The agree/disagree window pops up every time and all my raids disappear from the list.
Ive tried trashing the prefs in /Users/(me)/Library/Prefs and creating a new user, to no avail. Also tried updating to Admin 1.5, with no luck still.

    Hey Steve,
Thanks for the help! I tried what you said... even tried copying a raid pref file from a different machine, but what I seemed to find out:
Whenever I add machines and etc, all the files are written to the file, and when I quit they stay as well.
However, whenever I open the application, the com.apple.RAIDAdmin.plist file is overwritten immidiately with something that looks like this:
    bplist00? MonitoringWindowTopWSystems_MonitoringWindowHeight_LicenseAgreementAccepted_Moni toringWindowLeft_NSTreatUnknownArgumentsAsOpenMonitoringWindowWidth?
    TNameZAttributesYIPAddressTRateTPumaXfFiRQfYw?]192.168.1.204]192.168.1.205B RNO-5Ni?????????????
Looks like the file becomes corrupt or something?
    UPDATE
I just installed v. 1.5 on my powerbook and it's started to do the same thing... is this a new bug with the new RAID admin?

  • Hello, I have a Toshiba netbook with i-tunes loaded, when I go into import settings and choose MP3,instead of AAC, it defaults back to AAC when I leave the diaglogue box.

Hello, I have a Toshiba Netbook that I just put i-tunes on and when I go into import settings, I want to change it to MP3, but when I leave the dialogue box, it defaults back to AAC. What am I missing?   Thanks.

I wonder if I'm missing that OK because the screen on this netbook is smaller  than a laptop and only supports 1024 X 600. I can't scroll that box up any, and can't grab the top and move it up. So when I exit that box I have to click the x in the top right corner.
Acck. Yes, that'll be the issue. There's an OK and a Cancel down at the bottom of the screen.
This is going to seem a weird suggestion, but it's the only thing that is springing to mind at the moment ... Do you know someone with an external monitor, or a TV that supports PC input? If so, try temporarily attaching the netbook to that. Can you do the preference change on the larger monitor?

  • When I change from "remember History" to "use custom settings" it defaults back to remember history when I close the window. How do I keep my new setting?

I need 3rd party cookies enabled for a specific site. When I try to save custom settings, it defaults back to remember history and I can't open what I need on the site

Enabling thirds-party cookies is the default and if there aren't any other changes made then Firefox will show "Remember History"
Choosing the "Use custom settings for history" setting doesn't make any changes.<br />
If Firefox shows the "Use custom settings for history" setting then that is an indication that at least one of the history and cookie settings are not the default to make you aware that changes were If all History settings are default then you see "Firefox will: (Never) Remember History" and the custom settings are hidden.<br />

  • RAID Admin - SMTP settings

I can't seem to find anything but basic information about the Email notification feature within RAID Admin. I'm sure the information I'm entering is correct, but when sending a test email, the RAID Admin reports a communication failure, and no email is ever sent. Are there any troubleshooting steps I can take, or some kind of prerequisites for sending email?
    Thanks!

If there is no entry of this emails, the mails did not reach the mailserver. If they do , you can read why they are not send to the receiver. (Most of the time relaying issues.)

  • How to set up email in RAID Admin?

Using RAID Admin 1.5.1, I need to know how to set up the it up for automatic email notification. Okay I got as far as clicking the Email icon adding my .mac address. Now what do I put under SMTP. It's asking for the "server" and the "from email address". Our company uses a Microsoft Exchange server whether or not that means anything. And what is up with the check box for SMTP Server Authentication?
Thanks for any input. I appreciate it!
    jeffrey

Thanks Donald for answering my question. I found the IP Address of our exchange server and I plugged that into the server field. And I plugged my own company email address into the "From Email Address" field. That didn't do it, so I plugged in my network username and password into the authentication fields. I clicked "Send Test Email" again. Still didn't work. But here is the key in case anyone else has problems. At least in my case, I had to click the "OK" button to verify my settings. Once verified, I went back into the email settings and clicked "Send Test Email" again. Voila! A test email ended into my .mac email account right onto my iPhone within 1 minute. I think this is so cool. I can be away from the office (whether I be skiing or golfing) and be notified instantly if one of the components start to fail on our Xserve RAID system. Awesome!!!!!!!

  • RAID Admin doesn't see RAID array

Had to do a complete reinstall of all software and Xserve RAID has disappeared from RAID Admin. Have read a LOT more about this problem on this and other forums. I'm certain the company that set the system up for me left the RAID in DHCP mode. Wish I had known better 12 hours ago.
I tried the ping trick detailed in other threads, but I only get a "127.0.0.1" response. What am I doing wrong?
CPU plugged directly into upper RAID controller. Airport off. No other network connections. All lights are green. RAID functions fine otherwise. Tried with G5 and iBook with same results.

You said the Raid functions fine. I assume you meant that the volumes mount fine? Does that include the iBook seeing the volume(s) via the Ethernet?
If that's the case, then the host is serving up the raid volumes fine, which happens solely via the fibre channel connection.
    2 things to check:
    1. Since it sounds like the RAID was setup by somebody else, you might want to make sure that the upper controller on the RAID also has the Ethernet cable connected to it, not just the Fibre cable. This is a requirement for the admin software.
    2. If it is, make sure that it connected to a switch that is on the same network segment as the computers that you try to run the admin software on.
This can be tricky if you have multiple switches with VLAN's assigned to certain ports as it may not be so obvious...
Worst case scenario is to reset the controller back to its default setting. A paper clip will do the job...

  • RAID works, RAID Admin stopped seeing it...

...but yet I can monitor my remote G4/RAID just fine.
    I'm running 10.4.5 on a G5 Xserve/RAID, 10.3.9 on the G4.
I tried shutting the whole mess down, disconnecting and restarting, tried plugging the ethernet cable directly to another G5, etc, but the RAID will not show up at the IP address it was given. Was there something in Tiger that messed up my monitoring capabilities or changed my monitoring IP address? Is it possible someone tinkered with something they shouldn't have, and if so, how do I get it back without halting production in the whole shop?
Or is this just another one of those problems I seem to be the only one to have??
    Xserve G5/RAID   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

No, it happens. Just happened to me last month. RAID is fine - admin would show me three yellow lights and one red light and then would "gathering information" forever and ever with the spinning wheel.
First off - do you have matching firmware versions in your RAIDs?
I was told in no uncertain terms by Apple that running different versions of RAID admin than firmware version would result in the disconnect. If you have different versions of firmware you might want different versions of RAID admin.
Second - to fix I had to turn the RAID off AND unplug cables for 30 seconds and then restart. Notice Apple doesn't call it "off" they call it "power stand-by mode". To turn it off you need to unplug it or the machine stays in stand-by mode looking for the network signals.
Third - if you're just not finding the RAID could it just be on a different network IP range? There are a couple ways to find it if it's missing where you expect it to be.
    1) Start RAID Admin and click "Add System" - if it is in your IP range it'll show up.
    2) Run Network Utility. Ping 255.255.255.255 and you will get a response form 127.0.0.1 (that's you) and if another IP address shows up that's another device - probably the RAID if you're connected directly or on a local hub.
Remember - there are 2 ethernet ports with 2 separate NICs and that 169.254.a.b is the default range of the RAID IPs. If it's not where you expect it to be I'd start there. Make sure you are connected to the one you think you set - or use a hub to connect to both simultaneously for double the scanning pleasure. Also you should check that your subnet mask is set to something generous like at least 255.255.0.0 to make sure you're casting a wide net when you search.

  • RAID - cannot connect Raid Admin

For whatever reason my network settings got altered today, and ever since i have been unable to see the Xserve raid in Raid Admin. I have put the ethernet settings back to the same settings it had originally but no luck.
No lights of any colour, and a message saying connection error. So i restarted, and now there is nothing in my Raid Admin at all.I have the option to Add System...but i have no clue about the info that is required!
    Any suggestions please?
    adam

Well, if you know the IP addresses, you can enter this in the Add System field.
If you don't, and it has dhcp enabled on one of the controllers, you cn connect with a direct cable.
If both negative, and you know at least the IP range, you can do a ping sweep and find the address.
    Hope this helps

  • I've just created a new account but when I now try to download an app it defaults back to my previous address I had to close?

II've just created a new apple Id & account but when I try to download an app the box that appears on your I pad defaults back to my old apple id to which I had to close down as this was a mail address that got hacked.
how do I change this to show my new account? I presumed that once new id had been created then this should of updated automatically.

Good luck. It took me weeks to fix this when I had to do it. Your old ID branches out in lots of places. You may have to delete app and get them again, at least that is what Apple told me. Plus, all of your settings on your iPad that required any ID, will have to be changed. My old ID kept showing up in different places for weeks. Changing it on Apple.com is just the beginning.

  • Why does InDesign default back to Picas every time I launch the app?

I have repeatedly set my preferences in InDesign so that the unit of measurements is Inches. Yet, when I launch the app, it defaults back to Picas. Furthermore, even after adjusting the preferences again, when I open a new document the units are still Picas. How do I fix this?

CS5, yes? If so, that's a bug. ID will use the default settings of the language it was installed in. There's a hack to edit the prefs manually, but I don't have a link handy.

  • Warning lights on XRAID but RAID Admin won't mount it.

    I have 3 Final Cut edit suites sharing 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs.
I had an audible alarm on one of my RAIDs an amber flashing light by the System Identifier Button.
Edit 2 started up fine and my editor was happily working away. I then went Edit 2 to mount the RAID storage - made up of 2 x 7TB XserveRAIDs each split into 2 partitions providing a total of 4 volumes creating my volume based SAN. As I tried to mount the RAIDs using SANmp I had real issues. Eventually got the volumes mounted but then had the greyed out screen of doom when I tried loading up a Final Cut Pro project and had to do a forced shut down.
Edit 2 was still working but I then had similar problems in Edit 1 - not able to mount partitions and unable to load projects.
I tried looking up the RAIDs on the RAID Admin Tool but I'm only seeing 1 RAID when I should be seeing 2. The AID that is mounted is not giving me any errors which makes me think I've lost communication with the RAID with the problem.
Should I just shut the whole system down and hope it starts talking to me again when I fire it up again?
I just want to get on an edit my show.
    Thanks.

William: Thanks for your reply, but you seem to be wide of the target here.
RAID Admin can connect to the RAID,
    but doesn't see drives?
No. I can run RAID Admin on the Xserve or on a separate laptop, and either way RAID Admin can't find any RAIDs to show in the list of available RAIDs. So it doesn't even get to the stage where it can see any individual drives, since it doesn't find the RAID unit in the first place.
The red light you're seeing, as well as the
fact that Disk Utility can see all the drives
    as individuals,
Clarification: Disk Utility is showing symbols for drives, but of course these are really partitions of the RAID, not the individual physical hard drives in the RAID.
indicates that either stuff is set in JBOD mode
... well I'd love to report what mode it's in, but RAID Admin won't show me . However, judging by the fact that there's no part of the file system that's obviously missing, (and also by our original intent when this was set up) I'm 99.9% sure it's in some redundant mode, and 99.8% sure that is simply in default RAID-5 mode.
    or something is seriously wrong...
... depending on the meaning of "seriously"!
I'd guess the RAID set (and any data that
    was on it) is gone.
... though as I noted in original post, it's in everyday use, including by me, and I've not detected any missing data, aside from a handful of files (out of total approx 2 million files) that return read errors.

  • RAID Admin reality check -- this software needs serious work

Folks: This is a combination rant about RAID Admin 1.5 (on OSX 10.3.9) and plea for any suggestions for things I may have missed.
RAID Admin -- an utterly crucial tool for responsibly administering an X Serve RAID, itself offered for use in mission critical applications. But RAID Admin is just one frustration after another.
    1. Can't start due to broken Java or somesuch. As reported by several others elsewhere, and experienced herre, some QT upgrade breaks ability to launch RA. Thee's a "solution" of rolling back QT -- doesn't work. There's a command-line workaround for launching, but if this is really broken Java, how can you trust other functions of RA? Anyhow, we're running it from console of X Server with non-recent-QT.
    2. Finding the RAID Array is totally hit or miss. (And BTW -- don't get hosed by the little feature that it's not sufficient to have the RAID hooked up by fiber... you also have to have the ethernet cables connected). Sometines RA finds the nearby RAIDs by itself, sometimes it finds one of two, sometimes none... figure on entering the IP addresses by hand.
    3. Serious memory leak. Leave RA running for a few hours and it ***** up >100% CPU (on dual G4), huge amount of memory, and is almost completely unresponsive (apparently due to huge disk activity to swap virtual memory). Example: after 12 hours uses 372 Meg of real memory and 1.3 G of VM. Quit and restart fixes the problem... but do you really want to do that in midst of lengthy admin operation?
    4. Array Conditioning: Seems like a great idea -- but how can you tell whether it's doing anything useful? It generates errors to the event window showing bad blocks.... OK great... what do they mean? Is it fixing them? Where is its output? Maybe we could learn that from the docs....
    5. Oh right... no docs. Still stuck on RA 1.2 docs. No mention of Array Conditioning found anywhere in Help, or at apple.com... except to advertise that the feature exists.

William, thanks for your response, comments inline below:
I have not personally experienced any of the first 3
issues you note. And I've run RAID Admin on 30-40
different systems, and monitored 100+ RAIDs, over the
    past 3 years.
... it is good to hear a general level of satisfaction...
Are you experiencing this on just one system --
have you ever tried another machine?
What do you mean? We have one X Serve, and one RAID, and that's the one we need to admin. How would we introduce another machine into the scenario?
I'd suggest that your Java installation has
    serious issues.
Why would you suggest that? As I noted, the Java-suspected issue was not on the machine that I reported the rest of the problems on. It simple obliges us not to use RAID Admin remotely (and conveniently) since all the remote machines are up to date with updates including QT.
Also note, it's impossible for RAID Admin to have a
leak. Java has a garbage collector. Therefore, if
    there's a leak, it's a JVM problem, and not a RAID
    Admin problem.
That line of argument would be correct if the leak was due to orphaned objects -- ie: objects no longer refered to and not garbage collected. There's nothing to stop a program in whatever language just consuming more and more memory because the programmer neglected to throw away unneeded objects.
However, since posting, the Array Conditioning operation has completed, and I've noticed that the memory eating behavior has stopped. I've posted a correction on this.
For #4 and #5, I'd suggest reading the Kbase article
which details the updates and what they're good for:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302780
Where on that page are you seeing info that addresses 4 and 5? This is in fact the one page I was refering to: it advertises the feature, but where are the docs?
I'd suggest you figure out what's wrong
    with your Java installation.
No reason to suspect Java on the server, where we are running RAID Admin.
I posted some command-line options which will
give diagnostic output in other threads,
... that could be useful, could you be more specific about where you posted them, and do they cover the result of Array Conditioning?
    Thanks again for your answers,
    Graham

  • Raid Admin 1.5 - Recognize Array button not active

    Hi all,
just updated to RaidAdmin 1.5, updated firmware on both controllers to 1.5 version.
I have 6 disks on which should be my lost array. Suddenly 'Recognize Array' button in utilities is not active.
    Any idea?
    Leos.

    ok. The whole story:
Few month ago, I had RAID 3 schema on 6 disks. I did firmware update on my XRaid. This update WAS SUCCESSFUL. After XRaid restart, I lost my array. I didn't have backup. After unsuccessful local Apple support, I tried 3rd party companies to reascue my data. Noone helped me. I managed help from Apple in US, I sent my disks to them (quite expencive, I am from Czech Republic.). They recovered raid set on my disks to RAID 3 schema on 5 disks only - don't understand this. So I called them back a and I sent disks again, with detailed desription how it must be. Thay sayed OK and sent me back 6 disks, with no raid set schema - 6 unassigned to any array. And as a bonus, one of them was failed. So, now I have 6 disks, Apple claims, that raid schema is on disks (but i cannot see it on my raid - I realy tried everything - swapping possitions, controllers, cables .....). So when Raid Admin 1.5 brings this new function - recognize array, I started thinkink, that I have one more chance to recover my data back. But situation is as I described in first topic....
