Raid Battery Backup?

Hi.   I'm working through new disk subsystem issues (see links below for reference).  It looks like I have a new issue to address - raid battery backup.
My current editing system uses a battery backup.   Other than some issues lately, it's worked well.   I'm getting a new Areca 1882ix raid controller soon.   The question is, do I need a battery backup specifically for the raid controller?  E.g. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816151111 Or is a system battery backup adequate?
Thanks,
Dan.

Harm,
Thanks.   Fortunately we have pretty good power here.    When we loose power, it's typically for just a few seconds maybe twice a month.
I have a small UPS hooked up now.   It's good for about 20 minutes.   But I'm a bit concerned that it will react fast enough for the raid controller.   I think I'll get that Areca BBM.  Cheap insurance.
Now if Areca will get their buns in gear and bring out the PCIe 3.0 version of the 1882ix...
Thanks and regards,
Dan.

  • Areca RAID Battery Backup Module Problem

From the advice on this forum, I decided to go for an Areca 1680ix-12 and I've had it for about a week.  I now have a 6 disk RAID 3 running.  However, the battery back up unit was delayed, so I have only been testing the RAID so far and haven't enabled the write cache.  I received the battery unit today, and if I install it and boot the machine, I start getting the familiar Area beep sound that something is wrong.  If I have a look in the log, I see an 'under voltage' error.  Upon further examination, if I look in the hardware monitor, the 'CPU +1.2V' is running at less than 1.2 - somewhere around 1.08 (can't remember the exact number now).  I assume this is where the error is coming from.  If I unplug the batter backup and reboot, it stays consistent at 1.2 (or higher) with no voltage errors or beeping.  Anybody seen this before?  I'm thinking the battery unit is DOA, unless one of the gurus around here know how to fix this.
    Thanks,
    Clayton

    Harm,
Thanks for the reply.  I triple checked that the cable was properly seated on both the BBM and the 1680ix.  It's just the single cable correct?  No other power cables necessary?  It currently says 'Charging(96%)', however when the BBM is connected all the hardware readings are normal except for the CPU 1.2V which is at 1.12V dropping down to 1.08.  When it hits 1.088, that's when under voltage error appears, which is about every 5 minutes while I'm trying to get this battery charged.
Should I wait until the battery is charged to see if the voltage goes up a bit, close to your 1.184V?  However, even if a charged battery fixed the situation, it doesn't seem right to me that you can't run the card without a fully charged battery.

  • RAID Battery failed (other than expired)

    hello,
I've not even 1yr old Mac Pro with MB535PL/XXX/RAID,
Logs say in RAID logs that: `Battery failed (code 0x#0 = 18)', hard to imagine that it is battery fault.
I would like to know if there is any known solution because hw support wants me to send whole Mac to them.
Please check screenshot for more RAID Utility logs.

  • Heating problem and battery backup

Recently I bought a macbook pro (7 days). I am facing heating problem and its battery backup is also not good, 3-4 hrs, but company claims 7 hrs. What should I do?

For more on laptop temperature, look here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1778
    Take note of this part:
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

  • Is there a log entry indicating the use of battery backup?

I have a Late 2013 iMac, 27" i7 780m running Mavericks 10.9.4 - Is there an entry in any of the System Report logs that shows whether or not the computer had to make use of a UPC battery backup?
I've experienced some of the same issues people have had with their system not waking from sleep, having to resort to using the power button to get things moving again. Today, however, we had a serious thunderstorm and when I got home the system was shut down (or possibly not wanting to wake from sleep - the iMacs have no glowing light like my old Mac Pro, so there's no way to tell if the thing is shut down, a "heavy sleeper", or what). I'm asking the above question because if the system ever does have to rely on the battery backup while I'm away I want a way to confirm the system is actually using the UPC and shutting down properly (via Power Management settings) and not simply getting knocked out by a power failure.
It's somewhat unrelated, but the not-waking-from-sleep issue factors into this because that problem seems to be unrepeatable under any controlled circumstances. The support documents starts with disconnecting peripherals that might cause an issue, but the problem pops up so infrequently (weeks apart) there's no way to know if a disconnected USB hub is the culprit or a red herring. Today, for example, I'm left wondering if my issue was a power outage (the UPC should have taken care of a safe shutdown) or if I had an iMac not wanting to wake from sleep.

Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  Your backups are listed at the top, along with their sizes.  Note: this will only list your most current backup.  You may have your previous two backups available too but you cannot access any size information about them.

  • I don't have phone, but the TV says I need to replace battery backup for phone?!?!?!

    Hello,
For three years, we've had Verizon Fios Internet and TV.  We've never had a phone.
Today, the contraption Verizon plugged in the wall (sadly, I'm not really sure what it is, and had forgotten it existed until today as it's tucked behind some furniture) started beeping and the replace battery indicator light is on.  Furthermore, when I turn on TV, I am greeted with this message:
    My questions are:
    (1) If I don't have phone service, why would I even have a battery backup (much less need to replace it) to allow phone service during power outages?
    (2) Since I have only internet and TV, can I safely go without replacing this battery?
    (3) If the answer to #2 is yes, then how do I get the thing in the wall to stop beeping every 30 minutes?
Thank you in advance to any responses.

You can unplug the battery in your optical network terminal (ONT) and the message needing to replace the battery will go away.  Verizon customer service did confirm the battery is only for phone service when power is off.
I was only able to find 3 links on the alarm / battery backup.  It looks like they never thought about people who did not want the phone feature and to silence the beeping with the battery removed?
I don't know how frequently my unit beeps, but I don't normally hear it because it is in my garage.  I don't know if it has a pattern to when it beeps; but when I'm in the garage, I sometimes hear a single loud beep for about 1 second.
I imagine the battery must enable the laser to function when the power is off besides supply power to the copper phone lines in your house for a line powered phone.  I would assume then that if one had a UPS to power the computer and router and a good battery in the BBU; then one could have an internet when the power is off too?  Verizon user manuals don't mention this, so it might not work?

  • Battery Backup

Does anyone know the life of the battery backup?  Or I should say how long before Verizon refuses to replace it?  The battery backup that we have was here prior to us buying the house.  So technically, I feel we should of received a new one when we started our service.   The told us they could send us one for 40 some dollars, or they could send a tech out which would result in a service call and they could not guarantee that they would have one on their truck.  Really??   I am not going to nit pick, the way I look at it, it is strike one, two more strikes and Verizon is out, and back to Brighthouse for us!

    At Amazon you have choices:
Get a cheaper battery and save some money.
Or get the same battery Verizon sells for about the same (after shipping).  But the Amazon battery comes with a 3 year warranty.

  • If you turn your battery backup, does it lose power

I have the newest mac mini and have two external drives and computer, monitor plugged to the UPS batter backup. My apartment is replacing all the electrical outputs in my apartments. I shut everything down and unplugged from the wall. I also turned off the power button on the battery backup. Should I turn it back on? Will it lose battery charge, once I come home and plug the battery back in? Will it have to charge up again before it is usable?

Turn it back on when it has a source of electric power.
Will it lose battery charge, once I come home and plug the battery back in?
Yes, the charge will slowly deplete, if you are not using its battery. That might take a few days depending on the battery's condition.
Will it have to charge up again before it is usable?
    Yes.

  • Inside Battery Backup Box

Sorry if this is being posted in the wrong forum.  Does anyone know what the power consumption of the internal battery backup box is?  This is where I am coming from.  I previously had xxx cable (internet, phone, & tv).  When I had a power outage I did not lose anything as I have a ups on my lcd tv/cable box, and a ups on my computer/modem.  Most of my power outages last from a few seconds to a couple of minutes.  I was able to watch tv or use the computer until the ups gave out.  Now with FIOS, if the power goes out, I will only have telephone service, I assume that the modem and tv will go blank instantly even though they are still powered.  So, I was thinking of putting a small ups on the battery backup box to keep everything going.  Thoughts anyone?
    Mike T.

I believe that the BBU uses around 34 watts. You should be able to plug the BBU into a UPS with no problem.

  • Fios battery backup questions

I am wondering if the fios battery backup is okay with generator power.  I have a generac whole house generator and I have one ups that is fine with it and a smaller one that does not like the power it puts out.
Wondering if the fios ups will work with it or keep going on and off house power during an outage.
Also, does the fios backup keep every fios service running?  I realize the stb's need another power supply.

    astro_guy wrote:
Does Verizon offer an option where they back up the internet service as well?  It just seems silly to back up one UPS with another.  It's hard to imagine that this option wouldn't be available for business customers.
No, the BBU is only intended for the phone system. The thought behind that was that if power went out, then your computers and TV's would not have power to run (not considering laptop batteries) so there would be no need for internet and video to work if the power was out. And with only having to power the phone, the power draw is low enough to make a battery feasible. If it had to power the internet and video as well, that battery would have a significantly lower life expantcy. And many areas of the country require the phone to work for a certain amount of time which is one of the reasons for the battery in the first place. Adding the other services to that list would lower the battery life enough to violate the reqirements for the phone to work. Hence, the bbu only powers the tv/internet for 5 minutes after the power goes out, then it drops the internet/video to save power for the phone.

  • Best Battery Backup for iMac 27"?

Just received my new iMac 27" i7.  I contacted Apple and they told me I don't really need a battery backup to protect the iMac but it's always a good idea.  So I am looking for an inexpensive backup to just protect the iMac and give me a few minutes to shutdown.  I have been reading about battery backups and from my understanding rating (va or watts) can be less than the iMac.  The only real difference is that the time to successfully shut down will be shorter.  Is this correct?  The 27" has a 340 watt power supply so I could get a 240 watt backup and be fine if I only wanted to shut down wilthout damage the iMac?
Any suggestions on what to get?  It's almost impossible to make an informed decision because of specifications like "pure sine wave output", "dirty backup power" and "constant voltage source".  I am totally confused.  Do I really need one at all?
    Thank you

Do you need to hook up the USB cable
You don't have to, but if you don't, when the battery runs out, your Mac will crash.
If you connect the cable and set the preferences to shut it down after a certain period of time, or when there's a certain percentage of the battery left, etc., per the pink box in the link provided earlier, it will do a controlled powerdown.
and install the APC shut down software?
No, do not install that.  It's been incompatible with Macs for several years.
Your Mac has the software already built-in.

  • Nokia 5800xm, very bad battery backup

    hi all,
i have just bought Nokia 5800 XM, a week back. I am facing a very bad experience with this new phone since its giving a poor battery backup. The battery is not lasting even a day. I charge it fully in night and it starts getting down next day evening.
I am not using any application, neither any surfing. My talktime in a day is around 3 hrs max and listen to music max 1 hr.
Please suggest any workarounds, is this a generic problem all people are facing with this handset.
Should i contact nokia for replacing it?

First, make sure you don't have any open applications in the background. Turn off bluetooth, Wi-Fi. Reduce the screen brightness to the minimum required for legibility. Reduce the level of haptic feedback. Make sure there is a good network coverage. Update the firmware to the latest version...
If these are done, then take a look at the battery: use the phone until the battery goes dead, or until you see the Battery Low message a couple of times. Then, charge the batter to 100%, uninterrupted. Now, repeat it 2-3 times. After that, use the phone like you normally do. Charge it as and when you want.
If you are comparing the performance with what is there in the spec-sheet, please be informed that what you see in the specs are the ideal values - under "standard test conditions". In practical life, you should expect considerable differences. 3 hours of calls and 1 hour of music does mean a good deal of strain on the battery. If the music is thru loudspeakers, it adds to it.
    Cheers,
